Coach catalog: Trooper Taylor and Ted Roof
Hey everyone. In my continued pursuit to bring you information you can get nowhere else -- even if it's pointless -- I now will share my thoughts about some of the Tigers' new football coaches.
I haven't met Tommy Thigpen. I still don't have a feel for Jeff Grimes.
I'll get through a few today. I'll augment as we move along.
TROOPER TAYLOR
TED ROOF
I haven't met Tommy Thigpen. I still don't have a feel for Jeff Grimes.
I'll get through a few today. I'll augment as we move along.
TROOPER TAYLOR
- Job: Offensive assistant (wideouts)
- Age: 39
- Previous job: Offensive assistant at Oklahoma State
- Scouting report: He's a cheerful guy. Several times, I've happened upon him in the Athletic Complex and he's just singing to himself. He's a salesman -- always shakes hands and has something to say. High energy guy. He always seems like he's on a caffeine buzz. He's hilarious to watch with recruits. Taylor and fellow assistant Curtis Luper basically double team these guys. Taylor cuts up and Luper plays the my friend here is crazy role. Taylor uses a full-body laugh when he does. It reminds me of the way guys laugh in the NBA ... with arms and legs going.
- Best quote so far: (asked how important recruiting is to his job security) "You'll be planting fruit for a living really fast. I don't want to be on the grapes. I like doing the football thing, myself."
TED ROOF
- Job: Defensive coordinator
- Age: 45
- Previous job: Defensive coordinator at U. Minnesota
- Scouting report: You never know where he's coming from. He seems pensive at times, yet he'll crack enough jokes to keep him from being perceived as studious. I was surprised to see that he's only a few years older than Taylor -- they seem separated by far more than six years. Roof is old school. He clearly has been groomed by men who see football as a test of mental and physical fortitude. I don't foresee Roof being a big player on the recruiting scene. To be fair, I have a similar forecast for offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. I get the sense that Roof busted his butt "meeting the people" during his days at head coach at Duke (2002-07), but he doesn't seem inclined to do that now. It looks like strategy is his primary concern. He will be recruiting in Georgia.
- Best quote so far: (asked if he'll be head-butting players) "I might be the only guy in Atlantic Coast Conference history to get either a personal foul or unsportsmanlike conduct penalty as a player, assistant coach and a head coach. Does that answer your question?"

I'm all ears Mon...
ear bud humor rocks
Ipod buds and about a million other buds wouldn't fit in my ears or wouldn't stay in my ears through a workout. If I found some that were semi-comfy the sound quality was bad. After much research and buying and returning several pair I fell in love with these by Sony. I'll have to try and find their specific model. Give me a few minutes.
i bought one of those broom like putters last year. it really helped. sorry for the weather back there. y'all should be living here.
i'm all thumbs.
Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia Headphones
Just Google it. You can find them from about $20, shipping incl., in several places.
As for best quote, none of these new coaches have been able to touch the quotability of the Franklin Experience. Not only that. None of them have come up with anything that would be a better t-shirt slogan than Ensminger's live to punt.
so for tv viewing you recommend earbuds rather than headphones?
is the wire long enough to reach from the tv (or surround sound system) to my couch?
My dad has a pair of wireless headphones by Sony that work pretty well, but they were $100 or so. Much easier just to make your wife study in the other room. Man Law!
This comment has been removed by the author.
For TV viewing, wireless, over the ear headphones are best. Sharper Image or Brookstone had some I tried out a while back that were awesome. I don't know what they were. I don't even know if either of those companies is even in business anymore. Not much help, but I would go with earbuds for working out, and wireless headphones for tv watching.
Try SkyMall. They might have something like that.
Auburn Baseball playing okay today. Pitching is still shaky (including a 2/3 inning,3 earned run debacle by Rus Harper last inning).
FSU 8
Auburn 7
bottom of the sixth, runners on the corners, one out.
I just don't have much to add today. I did a super long story about women's basketball for Sunday's newspaper ...
Peter, the Auburn Bullpen Fire® has yet to ignite.
Starter John Luke Jacobs had a mediocre outing today. 5 inning, 6k is good (though I would've liked another inning from him). 2 hit batters, 1 homerun, and 5 earned runs was not so good.
The Auburn Bullpen Fire burned out several years ago.
3 run homer by Joe Sanders has the Tigers back on top 10-8. Still one out in the bottom of the sixth.
Now that Tubs is gone will the Basketball team ditch the orange unis?
That's 2 homers today. Jay G, at least they can hit the longball. Remind me of the Marlins last year. Terrible pitching, terrible fielding, but won a lot of games off homers. Home run derby in Miami was funny to watch.
Miller - As I don't know how far it is from your TV to your sofa I'm not sure. However, I'd say wireless is the best way to go for TV listening. They will be more expensive than just earbuds. Wouldn't it easier and more logical to just let Mrs. Miller study in another room?
AU game is on FSN. AU on a shaky 9-0 run and up 11-7
Once we move it won't be as much of an issue, we will have room to set up a room as an office/study... But, currently, with us living in an apartment... it really doesn't matter if she went in the bedroom to study, you still get the noise from the living room.
probably would be foolish to drop coin on something to use just for a couple of months, huh?
LOL @ "more abuse"
ahhh the apartment thing - makes sense...
Maybe SHE could wear earbuds with music? Or maybe this is a perfect excuse to go out with some friends? I mean surely you aren't expected to sit in perfect silence, right?
AU up 15-8. AU playing good D and MSU throwing bricks even when the shot is open.
no... it isn't that she is forcing me to sit in silence... It's something i can do to help her out... it is more a gesture on my part than anything
Miller..you've got the perfect reason to go to a sports bar.....sieze the moment.
and yes, on weekends i try to get out and go play golf or something... but those plans were washed away by t-storms and tornadoes this morning
mmmmmmmmm.....Crawfish tail bisque for dinner. Hoopette is a ggod cook. My +20 lbs overweight is proof.
just let me know what time to be there hoopie... sounds good!
What is up with the longsleeves for barrett?
Middle of the 8th 10-9 Tigers.
Tigers need to hang on and close it out!
fluorescent orange clad tigers are smokin' from beyond the arc so far!!
Tigers up 38-21 at the half
There is nothing wrong with orange.
no... not at all...
Barrett should have worn orange socks or leggings tonight to go with the orange longsleeves
bases loaded...bottom 8
morris at the plate
3 outs is all they need. C'mon Auburn.
Morris flies out to left to end the inning, stranding 3 runners...
Heading to the top of the 9th, AU leads 10-9.
Due up for FSU: the 6-7-8 hitters
Cardullo leads off with a single
WAR EAGLE!! MSU looks..uhh..confused..sure is nice to be saying that about the other team for once..WAR DAMN EAGLE!!
I mean WHOOO>..Lovin it baby
Auburn is absolutely mauling MSU.
Didn't see that coming.
One more out.
Who was that with that nice cut a second ago in the basketball game?
I dont know if it's AUs play or MSU lack there of Jay..but I'll take it man..
Oravetz flies out to LF
Robinson grounds to SS, who gets the lead runner at 2nd...
2 outs...
check that....Richardson...
Richardson caught trying to steal 2nd
BALLGAME!
simma guys..simma..
7-0 MSU run. Oops.
MSU on a run...ahhh
Baseball tigers win!
FSU - 9
AU - 10
Final
Woo-Hoo Auburn wins. 10-9...PF player of the game Austin Hubbard. Three innings 4 Ks as to close out the game.
WAR EAGLE!! thanks for the updates Miller
Hubbard came up big for the
pen... and they needed it!
sheesh... he hit that 3 from Jackson, MS
MSU throwing up garbage...AND IT'S GOING IN!!
Auburn men are hanging in there.
Brendan Knox!?!?!
i feel sorry for MSU...AU has the tallest player on the court in Knox...
Brendan Knox ...
don't get slopppy, auburn
That's like telling a sloppy joe not to get sloppy...
What does AU have to do to go to the dance? Win out?
They call Robinson's travel, and watch the MSU player stumble through the paint without calling it? I don't understand BBall refs.
Agreed Hoppie..it's been inconsistent all night..for both sides..so at least it's consistently inconsistent..
If I were MSU I would play hack-a-tiger
tick..tick...tick..C'Mon CLOCK
HARGROVE!!WHOOO!!
FI SLAMA JAMA!
I like Fishback too...
"I don't know what hotel they stayed at last night, but Hargrove was on the top floor."
What is the stupidest thing you can do?
Dwayne Reed knows and provides the answer.
Man AU plays hard..I love that we are finally getting some wins..
Listened to the first half on the radio ... apparently we played well, but the officials were bad.
Rod and Paul Ellen are like two cranky old men ... coffee's not hot, blah blah blah
This would be win 19.
That counts as "some wins" in my mind.
they have always played hard... it's just that they play so out of control they rarely know what the heck they are doing... but they do it full speed.
6 of the last seven..."some wins" baby..let that clock say zero first
If Lebo gains any more weight, we'll have to call him Uncle Fester.
Unfortunately that style of ball is backyard and doesn't work against the elite in the country..it's why the SEC is so down this year..it's the difference between backyard ball and fundamental basketball..just ain't played that way in the SEC..at least not this year
I do like the AU basketball shorts... i gotta get me a pair of those somehow... preferably in orange
hack a tiger... and barbour holds onto it rather than give it up to somebody that can shoot better than 10% from the line
AU plays intense defense.
Are we normally able to dribble and penetrate?
Maybe 16 points is enough to stave off the foul-free throw scenerio. c'mon Vot.
Look at Vot!!!
holy cow! he hit em both!
somebody check the pigs at the ag complex for wings!
I don't know basketball very well, but SEC basketball always has a football flavor.
Kids, this ain't over.
so they are straight up gonna foul on every possesion..interesting..kinda bush league ain't it..
as it should...
What are they supposed to do, WarTiger?
frankie shoulda just pulled up and popped a 3 right there
blow this and I will throw up..just because of how many beers I'll chug in disgust...
good point Sen..nothing else is working..just sayin..
wow 19 wins
War Eagle!
WAR EAGLE!! Wow I forgot what it was like to win in basketball..WAR EAGLE!! 20th win against the Tide..whooo!!
WHAT DO WE HAVE TO DO TO PLAY AT THE DANCE? Win out?
D. Miller, I'm probably the youngest in the room to get the phi slamma jamma reference.
is that an NBA JAM reference?
No, a reference to the University of Houston Cougars from the early 80's, when Hakeem and Clyde were there.
But had it been a NBA Jam reference, I would have gotten it as well.
Lebo's pedigree would suggest that he have teams with good fundamentals. Those guys play very hard for Lebo. They are even focused on defense, but otherwise seem to resemble street ball.
Houston-Georgetown.....that's when the NCAA playoffs went primetime.
wartiger, winning out would guarantee a tourney bid, yes.
Blazing Saddles is on AMC......Excuse me while I whip this out!
Greetings Hotties & War Eagle!!!
what is baba ganoush?
"Isn't someone going to help that man?"
Welcome baba.
Been a long time lurker, just got a halfway decent interweb connection...hyperlink instructions at the j-o-b, forgive...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baba_ghanoush
baba - i just followed your link, you can have my share.
Yea. Mine as well ... as much as I love Syria.
Paul Harvey, the great radio commentator, has died.
... and that's the rest of the story.
Thanks gatiger...
Not a bad day for AU on your day off JGT.
Page......no more.
I like him.
liked
Not too shabby, gatiger.
It's twue....It's twue!
Paul Harvey....Americn Icon
Definitely an American icon.
Must admit, never had any myself. It is what Owen Wilson's character in Wedding Crashers called Vince Vaughn's character as a nickname(at some point in the movie)...Paul Harvey will be missed...
I'll pass on the baba ghanoush... give me the turkey leg....
RIP Paul Harvey... i always enjoyed his work
i had forgotten about that line baba... i was going by the beer commercials
beer works...
JGT, Many thanks for all you do, much appreciated!!!
Lebanese Baba Ghanoush is dee-freakin-licious and if you haven't tried it you should.
Omnica - you too are welcome to my share.
Where did you try it?
Man, Paul Harvey. He is one of those guys that puts a warm feeling in your belly. Any time I found "The Rest Of The Story" on the radio was a pleasure.
A toast to Paul Harvey. A true icon and gentleman.
Hoopie - I set up the DVR for Blazing Saddles about 3 o'clock this afternoon. While I was watching a dvr'd Jeremiah Johnson. AMC is awesome.
I haven't tried it. I have tried eggplant and do not care for it. Further, I didn't notice any meat or potatoes in the ingredients. So...pass.
oh
Georgia, How 'bout eggplant lasagna?
Eggplant = no thank you.
He's like a kid. It doesn't matter that there is zero chance of recognizing an eggplant taste, he's just going to..well, act like that. So, no biggie.
Have y'all seen this? Saw it on my friend's (Aubie) blog.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcWfSN9eC7A
I am with gatiger... eggplant = no thanks...
Eggplant. Either it is an egg or a plant... it can't be both.
The only egg I eat, comes from a chicken and is preferably scrambled with cheese.
Got some deer cube marinating in dale's, worcestershire(sp) and Italian dressing...tomorrow will put a shmear of cream cheese in the middle(w/ a piece of pickled jalepeno), rolled up with a piece of bacon, all held togther with a toothpick and grilled over the open flame...Good Eats(Southern Style!!!)
British Take on the Iron Bowl
Very cool
Omnica(can I call you Omnica?), I did see that...Looked like Mr. Fry was a bit overwheled near the end, what with all the patriotism...
Yeah, I thought that was sorta cool and you may call whatever you like.
think I'll watch it a 'gain...
Omnica - I'm pretty sure that this crazy food issue is not the only item you and I will have to agree to disagree on. It's okay, even though you're wrong on this too, I won't hold it against you. Look at it this way, my refusal of it leaves more for you, your friends and anyone else interested in that...stuff.
With that said, it's time for me to hit the sack.
DVR is the best invention since 2000.
everyone is entitled to their own opinion... however wrong it may be
Auburn beat Mercer today... in tennis...
it's a tad bittersweet
I need one more Mob Wars member.
I could use 2 more...
I'm the kinda guy who can make a ruling, and I'm gonna make a ruling right now ...
1. Eggplant = bad
2. Blazing Saddles = awesome
3. DVR = rocks
4. Orange uniforms = sketchy for hoops; unacceptable for football
5. Omelets = good
6. Crab meat omelets at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear = very, very good
7. Cheese grits = Outstanding
8. NIT = likely
9. Billy Gillispie = belongs in the kiddie pool
10. Hotties = Great Americans
Senator Jet, I feel much more informed now.
Eggplant=good. You obviously never had it cooked right.
orange unis never good.
Got a DVR a year ago and love it.
Mon...I like eggplant parmesan.....if sliced thin and drowned in sauce. A veggie restaurant in Berkeley serves Grilled Eggplant Burgers....tried it....no thanks
Burgers and eggplant should NEVER be used in the same sentence...
Burgers are supposed to come from cows, and that is it!
(Buffaloes are acceptable as they are cousins of the cow)
Finally, some men with mature taste buds! ;-)
Miller..your right about Burgers.
Of course Berkeley is left of the left coast, where meat is taboo.
Dmiller ... my younga brotha from anotha motha ... we agree again.
Veggies, like onions and lettuce, can go ON a burger. They are not a burger. Neither is turkey, fish, chicken or anything other than beef (I'm willing to talk about buffalo).
Hoopie, if you're going to do the parmesan ... try the veal, it's the best in the city.
NoVa - I need you to run by that Sweetwater Tavern where we had dinner and get their recipe for that salmon dish I had. Oh my goodness that was so yummy!
In June, I was in SF for a meeting and me and Mrs. Jet and another couple took the subway to Berkeley to go to some famous pizza place.
I looked around and said loudly, "I guess I'm the only Republican in this place." My wife and friends climbed under the table ... the rest of the place emptied.
I love salmon -- fried as in croquettes.
fried salmon croquettes is good eatin'
all this talk about burgers... i could go for a burger from Hamburger King right about now...
DMiller ... let's break in!
Jet, I love veal, but Hoopette's rule = No veal
Complying with said rule = marital bliss
meet you there... if you get there before me, fire up the grill
salmon croquettes with a lemon/caper sauce...super duper!!!
Hoopie ...
I know the feeling ... I saw WTC at an event tonight, which was nice.
Unfortunately, Mrs. WTC and Mrs. Jet saw each other and talked badly about us.
anybody else want a burger?
Salmon Croquettes with ketchup!
Loved 'em as a kid....and now.
Lemon caper sauce?
I might squeeze some lemon juice on it ... I want salmon croquettes with turnip greens, speckled butter beans, mac and cheese, cornbread and buttermilk.
I want a burger, but I have a leftover Hooters burger in the fridge, think I'll grab it right now.
DMiller ... maybe we can call Pat and Gay to come in and cook us up some burgers ... I'll take a Dr Pepper, chips and a frozen Snickers.
Jet...gotta just grin and bear it....or as George Costanza said....."worlds colliding...not good"
How 'bout a Diablo Sandwich and a Dr. Peppa!!!
Thankya, nice lady.
I'm in a f'n hurry...
pintos and cornbread, mac and cheese, fried squash and fried zucchini, fried okra
Fried okra RULES!!!
I'd like 15 minutes alone with Kate of "Jon & Kate Plus 8" fame.
i'm gonna have to make a trip to the King for lunch next week...
I got my 15th mobster! wooo hooo
Monica ...
What would you do in 15 minutes with Kate?
What would you say , Mon?? She'd go get Jon and tell him to shut up cause he walked over wrong, and you'd just stand there flustered, cause i'd imagine that's what you'd like to talk to her about.
punch her in the nose
it would take you 15 minutes to punch her in the nose?
that's a slow delivery... she might have time to get out of the way of it
k8 = devil
Are you no loner "mafia monica" ? Had you in my mafia and says you are level 4, sup wit dat?
My wife watches the show regularly ... I've watched 4 or 5 times.
She's hideous.
I'm in Mob Wars, not Mafia Wars because I listened to Miller (I'm not sure why) when he told me I Mob was better.
mmmmmmmmk
I was flipping and landed on an episode where there were German Shepherd puppies. I couldn't take watching her. She makes MBSAL.
Bin- I can't wait to come eat your food one day!
you're a big girl mon, if you wanted to stick with mafia wars instead of mob wars then you could have... i just told you i was in mob wars, and didnt wanna start anew in the other...
don't deflect
deflect, huh?
lol okie dokie - simma down, miller. Didn't mean to upset you.
G'night.
i'm jus playin ... takes much to upset me... I haven't been truly upset in a couple years
right on, had a good special tonight, olive and caper risotto topped with seared scallops and fried chayote sqiasj, topped with a smoked tomato compound butter. With a side of asparagus and some paprika oil.
I'd still settle for a burger from the King.
I'm not sure i know what any of it is.... but it sounds very good...
Monday is shaping up to be Hamburger King day for lunch
Dmiller is leading me down the path of temptation.
