Coach catalog: Trooper Taylor and Ted Roof

Hey everyone. In my continued pursuit to bring you information you can get nowhere else -- even if it's pointless -- I now will share my thoughts about some of the Tigers' new football coaches.

I haven't met Tommy Thigpen. I still don't have a feel for Jeff Grimes.

I'll get through a few today. I'll augment as we move along.

TROOPER TAYLOR
  • Job: Offensive assistant (wideouts)

  • Age: 39

  • Previous job: Offensive assistant at Oklahoma State

  • Scouting report: He's a cheerful guy. Several times, I've happened upon him in the Athletic Complex and he's just singing to himself. He's a salesman -- always shakes hands and has something to say. High energy guy. He always seems like he's on a caffeine buzz. He's hilarious to watch with recruits. Taylor and fellow assistant Curtis Luper basically double team these guys. Taylor cuts up and Luper plays the my friend here is crazy role. Taylor uses a full-body laugh when he does. It reminds me of the way guys laugh in the NBA ... with arms and legs going.

  • Best quote so far: (asked how important recruiting is to his job security) "You'll be planting fruit for a living really fast. I don't want to be on the grapes. I like doing the football thing, myself."

TED ROOF
  • Job: Defensive coordinator

  • Age: 45

  • Previous job: Defensive coordinator at U. Minnesota

  • Scouting report: You never know where he's coming from. He seems pensive at times, yet he'll crack enough jokes to keep him from being perceived as studious. I was surprised to see that he's only a few years older than Taylor -- they seem separated by far more than six years. Roof is old school. He clearly has been groomed by men who see football as a test of mental and physical fortitude. I don't foresee Roof being a big player on the recruiting scene. To be fair, I have a similar forecast for offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. I get the sense that Roof busted his butt "meeting the people" during his days at head coach at Duke (2002-07), but he doesn't seem inclined to do that now. It looks like strategy is his primary concern. He will be recruiting in Georgia.

  • Best quote so far: (asked if he'll be head-butting players) "I might be the only guy in Atlantic Coast Conference history to get either a personal foul or unsportsmanlike conduct penalty as a player, assistant coach and a head coach. Does that answer your question?"

ear bud humor rocks

Ipod buds and about a million other buds wouldn't fit in my ears or wouldn't stay in my ears through a workout. If I found some that were semi-comfy the sound quality was bad. After much research and buying and returning several pair I fell in love with these by Sony. I'll have to try and find their specific model. Give me a few minutes.

Just Google it. You can find them from about $20, shipping incl., in several places.

As for best quote, none of these new coaches have been able to touch the quotability of the Franklin Experience. Not only that. None of them have come up with anything that would be a better t-shirt slogan than Ensminger's live to punt.

so for tv viewing you recommend earbuds rather than headphones?

is the wire long enough to reach from the tv (or surround sound system) to my couch?

4:53 PM
Blogger j-z said...

My dad has a pair of wireless headphones by Sony that work pretty well, but they were $100 or so. Much easier just to make your wife study in the other room. Man Law!

For TV viewing, wireless, over the ear headphones are best. Sharper Image or Brookstone had some I tried out a while back that were awesome. I don't know what they were. I don't even know if either of those companies is even in business anymore. Not much help, but I would go with earbuds for working out, and wireless headphones for tv watching.

Try SkyMall. They might have something like that.

Auburn Baseball playing okay today. Pitching is still shaky (including a 2/3 inning,3 earned run debacle by Rus Harper last inning).

FSU 8
Auburn 7
bottom of the sixth, runners on the corners, one out.

Peter, the Auburn Bullpen Fire® has yet to ignite.

Starter John Luke Jacobs had a mediocre outing today. 5 inning, 6k is good (though I would've liked another inning from him). 2 hit batters, 1 homerun, and 5 earned runs was not so good.

3 run homer by Joe Sanders has the Tigers back on top 10-8. Still one out in the bottom of the sixth.

That's 2 homers today. Jay G, at least they can hit the longball. Remind me of the Marlins last year. Terrible pitching, terrible fielding, but won a lot of games off homers. Home run derby in Miami was funny to watch.

Miller - As I don't know how far it is from your TV to your sofa I'm not sure. However, I'd say wireless is the best way to go for TV listening. They will be more expensive than just earbuds. Wouldn't it easier and more logical to just let Mrs. Miller study in another room?

Once we move it won't be as much of an issue, we will have room to set up a room as an office/study... But, currently, with us living in an apartment... it really doesn't matter if she went in the bedroom to study, you still get the noise from the living room.

probably would be foolish to drop coin on something to use just for a couple of months, huh?
