Auburn def. Ole Miss, 77-64

WEDNESDAY NIGHT
Post No. 1,075

Hey everyone. Welcome to Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum for tonight's epic battle between your Auburn Tigers and the Rebels of Ole Miss.

  • HABOTN Player of the Game
    C Korvotney Barber -- 13 points, 13 rebounds in 34 minutes

  • FINAL
    Auburn 77, Ole Miss 64.

  • FOURTH TO @ 3:45, 2nd half
    Auburn leads, 70-57.

  • THIRD TO @ 7:41, 2nd half
Auburn leads, 59-45. The Tigers are doing everything right on defense at the moment. They're rebounding. They're confounding the Rebels with some type of matchup zone deal. Ole Miss has gone scoreless on 10 consecutive possessions.

  • SECOND TO @ 11:41, 2nd half
Auburn leads, 49-45. So Auburn is on a run early in the period. Then Speed Reed comes along, takes a few weak shots and now the rally is over. Ole Miss still is rebounding well. Not doing much else well.

  • FIRST TO @ 14:58, 2nd half
Auburn leads, 47-43. The Tigers opened on a 9-0 run. They're scoreless in three possessions since then.

  • Thanks to "wtc" for stopping by to say hello at halftime.

    Bo Jackson is here. Proof:

  • HALFTIME
    Ole Miss leads, 40-36.

  • FOURTH TO @ 3:34, 1st half
Ole Miss leads, 32-25. Auburn now 1-for-12 from the perimeter. More interesting is the apparent decision to let Barber, a relatively poor passer, act as the offensive hub right now. They're dumping into him. As Ole Miss swarms him, Jeff Lebo is asking Barber to make the right pass out of the double team. It's not happening very often.

  • THIRD TO @ 6:54, 1st half
Ole Miss leads, 26-23. Auburn currently is 1-for-9 from the perimeter. Maybe it's time to consider other options. The Tigers are rebounding, though. They're staying (almost) even because of put-backs and other second-effort deeds.

  • SECOND TO @ 11:49, 1st half
Ole Miss leads, 19-16. I get the sense, without looking at statistics, that Ole Miss is not a very good defensive team. I've seen them miss several switches in the nine minutes so far. Auburn has been getting lovely looks.

  • FIRST TO @ 15:15, 1st half
Ole Miss leads, 14-10. Ole Miss' point guard, freshman Terrico White, already has seven points and two assists. He's the guy who went off for 19 the last time these two teams played. I guess Jeff Lebo hasn't quite figured out how to stop the kid.

  • YOUR AUBURN STARTERS
PG -- Speed Reed of Houston, Texas
SG -- Tez Robertson of Cincinnati, Ohio
"SF" -- Tay (With A Tray) Waller of middle Georgia, USA
F -- Rasheem Barrett of suburban Atlanta
C -- Korvotney Barber of middle Georgia

  • Vincent Jackson, a former Auburn tailback, is here tonight. I'll try to get a picture of of him.

  • This is sooooo not a "white out." This is the worst SEC crowd of the season without a doubt.

I think WNSP gives in to too much outside pressure....I realize sometimes change can be a good thing, but it seems like they change because of outside influences. I also realize sponsors pay the bills, but if you lose some of your fan base, who is hearing the commercials by your sponsors? I personally have not agreed with the way they have treated some of their employees, and have not listened to the show for a year or more....(McCready's departure)

My opinion...I don't run a radio station, so that's all I have is an opinion.

Hola Hotties - JGT, EXCELLENT stuff as always. I'm caught up on reading all of the coaching interviews and their corresponding comments after a mid-week long run, shower, dinner, etc. Follow on from some previous posts this afternoon/evening, I am more powerful than ms tiger so I can do what I want to do in my house. We're watching tv together now and the only time she acts annoyed is when I'm laughing at what I'm reading here.

I always enjoy catching up on what that Vincent Edward fellow is doing. Of course I have excellent memories of him. I also have good memories from some of his interview quotes - a good one from Jim Rome shortly after 9/11, a good one from PF in reference to Tiger Woods, and a great one in The Worldwide Leader Magazine about a year ago paraphrased as "I don't have to outrun that bear, I just have to outrun that slow white dude."

And as for football, I have developed a new strategy to use during the season if we start getting Ziembaed again. I say we introduce the Ziemba snap count. You compute the Ziemba snap count by adding one to the snap count every other offensive player is using.

Jay-ESPN shows attendance was @5300 last night. After looking at each SEC game last night, we had the lowest attendance. Van vs UGA had more, at Athens, and UGA is 11-17. I am beginning to believe after the 1st few games in 2 years, to see the new arena, attendance will fall back to the normal lows.

What is your opinion?

7:47 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I just think the students should show up more, especially when you've an undergrad population the size of AU. I know I didn't go to many as a student but I wish I would have now.

7:50 AM
Blogger wtc said...

The students that do show are fairly vocal. Just not enough of them. What is there to do on a Wednesday night in Auburn? They gave out t-shirts for the first 2,000 for the whiteout last night. At 15 till 7:00 I walked up to the concourse and stood in line and got two and they looked like they about 600-700 left.

7:55 AM

my best friend had an anti-Bo moment back in '98. he hasn't like him since. :(

i don't understand the lack of student support at games either. i mean, do you have to be 24-3 to have students come to games? i rarely ever missed one when i was there. you can cheer for 2 hours, then go straight to Skybar. what's so difficult about that?

8:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is just my opinion - a rather uninformed one at that - but I feel that the lack of excitement around the men's basketball team is in direct relation to the coach.

In just a few short years, look at all the excitement Nell has garnered for the women's team.

Jay, regarding Bo, I don't know if you saw my post from early last night, but my wife and daughter saw him yesterday at The Olive Garden in Tigertown. He was very nice to my daughter and gave her an autograph. Just thought I would add that into the conversation.

I got an autograph from Bo many years ago in Tuscaloosa of all places. He was there visiting some hunt club. My stepmom was a friend of the owner. He signed his baseball picture. My oldest daughter has it displayed on her wall of honor and knows how cherished it is.

Maybe Bo was just "signed out" by the time he arrived at BEMC. In get tired of signing autographs, too, sometimes.

As far as Bo Jackson goes, I could not care less for him. I have met him several times and I can't stand him. He believes he is bigger than Auburn and that he built Auburn. It really sucks when you meet someone you idolized as a kid and have him be a complete jerk.

Eddie, I have heard similar stories in the past regarding his behavior, but I thought I should tell about my daughter's encounter to be fair. Maybe she caught him at the right time, but it really made her day. And that made my day. I have found that sometimes it is better to never meet players in person, so you can remember them as you wish they were instead of how they really are. Sorry it happened like that for you.

Eddie, One more thing I forgot to add, Jeff Burger was that player to me that Bo was to you. If I saw him drowning I would offer him a glass of water. What a jerk. OK, my therapy session is over now.

Agreed Depressed. I've been a huge Auburn fan all of my life and I have also been very fortunate to get to work with the football team while I was at Auburn. Reality sets in when you actually see how things really are, for better and for worse. You also realize what a big political machine the Auburn program is and that is disappointing, but not surprising (maybe a little bit surpising to a freshman living his dream though). I have had the chance to meet alot of the Auburn greats and players that I adored as I grew up, and most experiences are positive, but some just absolutely ruin your image of what that person meant to you growing up. I'm very glad that your daughter was able to get an autograph and that she had a very positive experience.

As for me, I still cherish the week that I got to spend with Tiger Woods his last NCAA Championship Tournament at the Honors Course in Chattanooga. I worked as a caddy at the course for several years while growing up there, and I did a lot of work in getting the course ready for the tournament and my reward was that I got to follow Tiger around (while being paid) and be crowd control. He was everything, if not more that I expected him to be. He spent a lot of time with just me and him at the range, showing me his trick shots and just chatting. Those are memories that I hope that every kid / adult is able to have with their idols and it's just disappointing when they are the opposite of that.

Sorry for the ramble.

Morning Hotties - JGT I'll say again, good work yesterday and last night.

Seanz - I made a few comments about Bo last night regarding some great quotes (in my opinion) from him. I think your earlier referenced SI Hunting article may have been the same one I remembered as being an ESPN article, I could well be wrong on the source. But, it was a great article and I just loved one of his opening lines about killing that bear with a pistol in Alaska: he wasn't scared, he knew he didn't have to outrun that bear, all he had to do was outrun that slow white dude (slow white dude = either a guide or hunting partner).

My only person-to-person encounter with Bo was at the Cotton Bowl, I got high fives from Bo, Aundray and some others as the team was leaving the Loew's Anatole heading to the stadium. I don't think AU's performance that day was directly attributable to me, but I can't rule it out completely. So that being the case I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to all AU fandom.

Could very well have been ESPN, not really sure. Either way, cool story.

Q - is a fantastic individual anytime I've ever encountered him.

I used to live across the street from Ron Stallworth for about 5 years and we worked for the same bank for a bit while in the gump. He's a great down to earth guy and on top of that was an excellent neighbor. I think he and I were the only homeowners within a few blocks who chose not to hire someone else to do the yardwork.

While at the same bank I also worked with Leonard Thomas very closely. Very nice guy too.

Which is more likely to make someone think positive thoughts about Auburn: the mention of Bo, or the mention of Eddie? For everyone except for Eddie's family and close friends(and maybe even for some of them, I say Bo.

I'm sorry I said anything about the idolized Bo. I promise you there are many more people that have had my experience than you think when it comes to Bo. I think I will go back to solitude now.

I got an autograph from the Strongest Man in the World, Sexual Chocolate himself, Mark Henry back in the day. He acted like he was better than us, but since he was a wrestling heel, that was what we wanted. He even made fun of my friend! That is a night I will never forget.

Eddie, I wasn't criticizing you. Sorry it came across that way. You just happened to end up in my semi-sarcastic post. Bitter Innocent bystander of sorts.

PF, can I punch you in the face?

Just kidding.

To do list:

1. Avoid making Eduardo mad.

Bo has been awkward at best, and a turd at the worst. But he's our turd.

Q is a representative of a fine Auburn man, but more than he's a fine man, period. His parents raised him well.

Now would be a good time to remind you that he would be an outstanding athletic director. Maybe he could start Monday -- first of the month and all.

This Auburn offense will be great next season. Malzahn is innovative. With Grimes taking care of the offensive line, we should be solid.

I also think they have found a solution to our tackle troubles. Next season the tackles will no longer be in a two point stance. In a shocking development, Auburn will introduce the one point stance. Yes, our linemen will balane on one foot in a Karate Kid type stance.

Yea, it may sounds crazy, but after hearing about how great our new offense was going to be last year, I will believe about anything now.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the win over Lipscomb. As a good Church of Christ school, it doesn't play with instruments. So, without bats and gloves, it's really hard to be competitive.

Frankenbummer, I am pretty sure the only time I annoy Jay is when I bring up the BC coaching situation. Speaking of which, what do you guys think about that? I mean, is it a smart business practice to fire a guy just for looking elsewhere? I mean, he wasn’t even looking at another college, he was looking at an NFL job. Should we fire Trooper Taylor for admitting he has aspirations to be a head coach one day?

9:45 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Jet, I would prefer not to be punched by a Senator, if its all the same to you...unless I was part of on of those Asian govenments where they have all out brawls. Little dude tries to hit me with his Ferragamos and IT'S ON! I'd be all over Countdown and The Soup. It would be awesome.

I got Bo's autograph after Senior Bowl practice when I was a kid. He signed two things for me and would only sign one for my friend wearing a Bama hat.

I wish I could still see all the autographs on that football. If I remember correctly it had Pat Dye, Bo, Don Shula, Gene Stallings, Steve Wallace, and a few other NFL coaches.

Yes, Taylor and Malzahn should both be fired. Preemptive strike is best.

At this brawl suggested by Jet, I'd be like "Motorist" off to the side saying; "People, I just wanna say, can't we all just get along?"

Yeah, that'd be me cause I'm a lover not a fighter.

Or, I may let the brawl go on unabated and sneak around and steal some beer and food from the involved parties. I mean, no sense in letting it go to waste.

cMhlaei (just wanted to be part of the cool group),

I think the better course of action would be to go ahead and fire Chiz, and promote Gustav and Trooper to co-head coaches.

If we are committed to the BC model, that is.
