Football chatter, 4/13
Hey everyone. In lieu of any substantive news to report today, how about we examine a few things that have caught my eye during the past few weeks?
I discussed a few of these things on the radio today. So what?
- I get a lot of questions about the wideouts. I often give different answers because, well, it's a complicated situation right now.
Montez Billings hasn't been practice as best I can tell. We haven't received any answers about why he's not practicing. Tim Hawthorne is a solid contributor. I sense that Quindarius Carr can be a solid contributor. PPL? Can't tell yet. Terrell Zachery appears to have some star power, but I'm still waiting to see potential meet performance.
One thing is for sure: DeAngelo Benton and Emory Blake will have a chance to play immediately. - Depth along the offensive line is laughably barren. Auburn has almost no safety net in place. With Kyle Coulahan now off the team, the Tigers have seven healthy scholarship linemen. When Bart Eddins returns from his injury, that makes eight. Freshmen Andre Harris and John Sullen arrive this summer, but you know how that goes. Plus, Sullen is a long-shot prospect from the start.
- Eltoro Freeman has a real chance to get everything you wanted Tray Blackmon to be. Freeman has all the speed, bloodthirst of the LBOH ... but adds an awareness that was missing from the Tigers' last Impossibly Hyped Linebacker. I like him.
- Mike McNeil sounds like he may be out for a while with the leg injury he suffered last weekend. If that's true, remember that broken bones can heal firmly within six months.
Also, Christian Thompson is one heck of an understudy. He has some star potential. - I couldn't make a list without mentioning the weird, unnecessary decision to close practices and scrimmages to the media. Gene Chizik said he didn't want distractions. I guess Tigerettes and hordes of high-school coaches never cause distractions.
Judging from the message-board gossip posted by one of those high-school coaches last week (re: the imagined "fight" between Coleman and Rocker), Chizik may want to reconsider his reasoning.

Well, Trott will be a slot receiver. We won't used a tight end often.
Steve, hopefully Trott can receive slots better than he can receive footballs to date.
Why do idiots love to go into bear habitats at zoos? I think stupid people really should have to wear a sign so you can stop them before they start acting a fool.
If only he or she had listened to Harrison.
Goodnight Hotties. Sweet dreams.
Prowler, you would like my paintball law. Vote for me as your president and every driver will be issued a paintball gun containing a special type of paint. Each time you see a driver do something stupid, you shoot their car with paint. This might be applied to stupid people too. Once completely covered in paint, the vehicle or person could be banned from participating in society.
Trott needs to go to Victoryland and practice the slots.
Night, Mon!
Steve, my dad has been saying the same things for years... and hes completely serious.
Great idea, Steve. You have my vote!
Steve ...
Where do I send a contribution?
Adios HOTTIE-migos.
Peace be with you, Brother Jet.
BREAKING NEWS (kinda)
Andre Smith has fired his agent....
who wants this headcasse?
Not I, jhag. Not I.
Goodnight, Hotties.
Mon, does Dirty live in B'ham... or a surrounding 'burb? Could you ask her for a recommendation on a good ISP, please? Thanks!
thanks jet. i will order that exactly.
Also: RIP former wideout Connie Frederick. He apparently died yesterday of a heart attack ...
well the 8 page paper turned out to be 7 for me..its only a rough draft i hope thats okay
jhag, the paper isn't the wrong length. You just used the wrong font size:)
Good morning, Hotties!
Jay G, excellent work. I love getting your prospective on things. This is the first year I've actually had information on the players. In years past, I would just attend the games without knowing anything about them. THANKS!
Jay G and Monica, what Dish Network package do you have? There are so many from which to choose. It's confusing!
A Good Morning to all!!
Luv...are you getting Dish Network?
ehyou, I don't know. We have Charter cable right now and hate it. I'm just gathering info. on both Dish and DirecTV.
Other tricks, Jhag ...
Longer words
Longer sentences
More paragraphs
Just sayin'.
Good morning gang, I love the DISH Network myself.
Well, that's three yes votes for Dish.
Luv, I'm looking into Dish Network as well when we move up to Alabaster in a couple of weeks. I am looking at either the TurboHD Silver or the Silver 100 + HD. Dish seems to have better prices than DTV. And they have all B'ham locals in HD.
Are there any other ISP providers other than Charter for internet up there?
Luv...
I've had Dish and DirecTV. I liked both, they're about the same. A lot of folks get DTV for NFL Sunday Ticket. If you're not into that, Dish is a little cheaper for comparable programming.
Seanzie...
Tried Mafia Wars last night. I see a lot of time-wasting in my future. Very cool.
Anyone ever had a burger at Willie's Weenie Wagon?
Sam like his cable. HD Locals, DVR, A Bazillion channels. Sam has a dish for tailgating, and really doesn't see the advantage over cable for home use. Plus, there is no worry about the tacky dish going out every time it rains.
Ehyou ...
Bloody Marys all around!
You got it Jet, on the house.
Welcome aboard!
(Change to reflect high esteem for ehyou's outstanding avatar choice)
The HOTTIE Love Boat soon will be making another run.
D. Miller, we have AT&T for our DSL.
does anyone have any info on how Connie Frederick died? he would just be in his early 60's, right?
oh, and good morning hotties. :)
Who is Connie Frederick?
Never had a burger there Sam, but was requested by a co-worker that I had to get at least one dog and a t-shirt
Luv, I'm a DTV guy party because of the NFL network, the group of discovery channels they offer together, but mostly because of the AT&T bundle they set up.
ehyou wins
ehyou, it's only fair that you join my mafia now. I'll join yours as well.
I like the idea of the AT&T bundle because we have AT&T wireless and DSL, but would they honor the bundle pricing since we are already customers? As for the NFL Network, I can take that or leave it. A lot of HD channels, price and local channels are the biggest facors for me.
Jet...
Cap'n my man! Staff cocktails at the poolside bar at 0900. You dig?
Luv, I recently tried to do the ATT bundle, but the cellphone plan included is no bueno and you are stuck with the stupid land line which, IMO, is a as useful as a screen door on a submarine.
finally found out about Frederick on Phillip Marshall's site.
He died of a massive heart attack.
here you go Luv,
'Connie Frederick was an Auburn senior (in 1969). He was a terrific wide receiver and one of the top punters in the SEC. The game was already in hand when he dropped back in punt formation. But he didn’t punt. He ran and ran and ran, 84 yards for a touchdown.'
Thanks, scottie!
That's why we did DTV, Luv. We were already on Bellsouth DSL, and cell plan (which AT&T ended up buying). So we did it out of convenience thing to not have to change everything else up, and still get the bundle.
Luv, that play was against Bama in '69. he was back to punt and looked up and saw no one was rushing him. it wasn't a called run. he just took off and went all the way for a TD. from what i have read Coach Jordan never did say anything to him about that play.
Yeah, if it was up to me, we'd get rid of the landline. I rarely use it and I don't get any calls except from my mom and she can call my cell phone (I don't use my cell phone much for that matter! LOL).
I want to switch to Dish Network, but my Directv DVR has the '05 Iron Bowl still on it. I still watch the first quarter of that game from time to time, from the CBS Brodie Croyle interview to Obomanu's run from midfield to go up 21-0. And I laugh the entire time. I just can't give that up. Would that all Iron Bowls had so perfect an execution.
scottie, I bet that was exciting! Coach Jordan didn't even congratulate him on his fantastic decision?
I haven't had a house phone for almost a year. Haven't missed it one time.
Little did anyone know that Captain Stupor ... I mean, Stubing -- was actually the captain on the Exxon Valdez.
Question everyone: do I need to have the landline to keep the satellite channels? I thought we had to keep that so it could do the upgrades. If not we'll be getting rid of that one, too.
nope. he never did Luv.
Seanzie...
Send me an invite.
Jay Adams
Macon, GA
tommy, with DISH they want you to have your box connected to a broadband line but definitely not to a phone line. I can't vouch for DTV.
ehyou, will do when I take it to the house, currently, I am being blocked from facebook.
I sure wish you could pick and choose channels. There are SO many channels I would never watch.
Luv, Apple TV is close to that, the only problem is, zero sports.
Well, Seanzie, you know we can't have that!
Absolutely unacceptable, until they figure that out, I am stuck with my Dish bill.
My directv contract runs out in May.. which means Phase 1 of "Threaten to Switch to Cable to get a Better Directv Deal" will commence. That sort of stuff always works.
I wonder if that would work with Charter...doubtful.
weagle251 you can save your Iron bowl to a USB. I read how to do it recently. Have you considered that?
Boy I like following the crowd :)
we are SUCH goobers!
Luv - I used it on Charter many times back when I lived in Auburn. You need to call and say you are getting a better deal from a satellite provider so you will cancel you service, or you can say you would like to downgrade to basic cable. The first person you talk to never seemed to have the power to give a better deal, so you have to be patient. They will transfer you to someone who usually offers you a better price for the stuff you already have in the form of a 3 to 6 month promotion. You will have to repeat the process once that promotion runs out.
It is important for you to know that one time they called my bluff and didn't offer me a better deal. I stopped the cancellation process and called back a week later and got the better deal I was looking for then. They like your money and they are lazy, so they don't want to put in the effort to downgrade your service or lose you entirely to satellite.
I have no idea if this works for directv, since I signed a contract and that has rendered my technique useless. But I used it on charter in Auburn many many times.
Tommyd ... we don't have the phone line connected to the DISH receivers.
They charge an extra $6/month for you to receive updates via the dish. Phone is optional.
If you value your American sports, you really need to peep DirecTV. They have the market cornered on MLB and NFL.
And that's why I'm going to keep our DirecTV. Although I have to go to the folks house and watch all the Auburn replays on comcast. Do watcha ya gotta do though, right?
I just realized Jay doesn't want to be my friend. My friend request from eons ago is still pending.
Rejection hurts.
