Getting back in gear
Hey everyone. It's been a few days, I know. It happens sometimes.
GAZING INTO THE DISTANCE: Thanks, as always, for making the HABOTN one of your stops on the Interwebs. As Auburn's athletic season winds down and there is less SUBSTANCE to what I can write here on a daily basis, I'm open to ideas about what we can do for the next two months or so.
I plan on doing player-by-player scouting reports on the team's top 25 players as we get into late June and July. Until then, though, it's all negotiable.
A-DAY THOUGHTS: I haven't had a chance to talk with coaches about how things went Saturday. While I believe Neil Caudle has a real shot at this job, his superior performance at A-Day doesn't change much. This is at least a two-player race and, in my opinion, will remain that way until late August. Don't yet forget about Chris Todd.
I was interested to hear that Mario Fannin played wideout last weekend. He's been discussed as this hybrid player, but I think Onterio McCalebb is the preferred player for that role. When McCalebb told me last week that nobody else was being groomed for a TB/WR role, I figured something was up.
BASEBALL LOSES TWO AT USC: Auburn (25-15, 8-10) played well at times, but again struggled on Sunday because of pitching problems. The bottom line is that a third weekend starter doesn't exist. Grant Dayton is consistently good and Jon Luke Jacobs oscillates between good and below average. Without a third guy, though, the Tigers will struggle to finish .500 in the league.
WOMEN'S GOLF WINS THE SECs: It was Auburn's seventh league crown. The Tigers opened the final day three strokes back, but pulled away with an eight-stroke win. Arkansas and Alabama finished second. Auburn, currently ranked No. 6, will play in the NCAAs beginning May 7.

That's funny, a fly marrying a bumble bee.
Let's face it, last year we were infected by the Confranklin Worm.
1 is NOT the Loneliest number that you'll ever know!!!
I was at A-day and I don't see how as fans we can truly know which qb is or should be #1. We don't look at film, we don't know which lines or which strings (1st,2nd, etc) so how can we evaluate fairly.
What I want? I want the best qb that can move the ball consistently with planned called plays and when all hell breaks loose.
So based on that, who meets that criteria?
It clearly should be Rollison, eaglesteeler.
says "You think you can beat me down Mr. LEED AP EXAM. Oh no my brother, you better ask somebody. I'll stomp a hole in you and walk it dry baby! Booyah!!! How you like me now?" ... translation: I passed the LEED Exam and now I am a LEED Accredited Professional. Yay!!
deja vu phred..
leed?
Some of you guys were talking about the crappy, old Sun workstations in the engineering school at Auburn. Well, I'm obviously older than some of you because I was there when those Sun workstations were bought (late 80s).
I actually went and made cold phone calls to unsuspecting engineering alumni asking for donations to buy the Sun equipment. The script explained that it would make Auburn a leader in computing or something like that. I was paid for my labor with a free T-shirt and free pizza.
When the computers were finally bought and installed, I tried using them but found that they were generally worthless and that I preferred using my MS-DOS machine back at my apartment. I still feel slightly guilty about calling and asking for all of that money for those useless computers.
Congrats Phred, if I had any clue what the LEED was I'd be proud of you. But for all I know you just passed a 1st grade level reading test.
I needed to be able to run a sub 12 minutes mile and a half so I started to train this weekend, not having run over a mile on a consistent basis. After 3 days of running, I ran it in under 10 minutes. I'm hoping to get under 9 soon.
who thinks franklins offense coulda worked with a staff that bought into the system? I don't know if I do but I am curious?
My favorite story from cold call fundraising for the crappy Sun workstations:
Me: "Hello. I'm looking for Mr. Smith."
Shouting female voice: "I don't know where he is. If you can find him, you can talk to him!" [Click].
End of conversation.
sorry wartiger ... I am just REAL happy about it.
Wartiger I dont think it would have worked. It required the OL to be too small for the grind of an SEC season. One or two games here or there (like Troy did) maybe but not an entire season of going against 300+ lb DTs and definately not running east and west.
Agreed Eaglesteeler! If the coaches dont know who the QB should be and they watch tape and see the practices, how in the world could a fan know.
Congrats Phred. Passing Leed is a big deal and it's great on the resume!!!!!!
don't be sorry phred..didn't even realize you were phred til now..know what I mean?..facebook Leeds guy is you right?
I cannot lie ... 'tis true. Poke me or something so I'll know who's who.
AUbigcat-so based solely on the size of the OL is why is wouldn't have worked? I only ask b/c troy bout beat UGA with that offense..and didn't it put up big numbers against BCS schools...Troy just couldn't hold up against the bigger schools..correct me if I'm wrong...
Phred-you look very smart..younger than I woulda thought..just based on your comments..congrats on the passing of the test man..
My suggestion for the next few months, Pants off Dance off. For charity of course.
I can't believe some people get excited about Comic Sans. I don't see the big deal. There are different fonts for different situations.
I do think the Franklin Experience could have worked for a time, but his offense isn't going to become the norm. There are some offenses, like the wishbone, that work because teams don't face it often. Once teams learn to defense it, it don't work. The Franklin Experience could have been better, but I don't think it was a long term solution. I hate to type it, but I don't think Tuberville understood that spread offenses are not all created equal. The spread is more of a formation, rather than an offense. It isn't like the wishbone. Anyone heard of a pass oriented wishbone? The spread is more of a formation and a philosophy of spreading out the field rather than some limited set of plays.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing...
To steve from Columbia's point... talk to me in 8 years on how good the Ga Tech triple option is....
Teams develop and learn how to defend... its a cycle that keeps all this fun...
Dear Leader, the GT triple option in some ways resembles the spread. And yes, they do pass out of it. I have actually seen many speculate that it will be the next big trend in offenses. I have heard that offense referred to as the jet or sky offense, which kind of perplexes me.
The GT offense also reminds me of Emory Billard's wingbone, but I think the formation is where the similarity ends.
Not knocking it... just proving your point... in 8 years teams will have figured it out.,...
and someone else will have the next great thing... just like thee a-11 .. I think it is banned but I thought it was great..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJOm-IJcbg0
http://a11offense.com/
yeah, i don't think the refs would let the a-11 fly. very cool concept, though.
jgt, how about some "behind the scenes" stories re: nutritionists, cleaning staff (who's a slob/who's not), security folks, etc. get their feel for the program.
aargh! i've killed a thread1
Derrick Rose is NAAAAAAASTY
Braves rain delay over in 10 minutes
Foresight is better.
Dear Leader, my point about the spread is that it isn't truly an offense, but rather a formation. Teams will adapt to different versions of it, but it isn't as limited as some offenses.
I don't think something like the zone blitz, which killed the run and shoot, will happen.
In effect, I think the spread has become an overused term. I think of it in the same light as fuzzy logic or object oriented. It is a cute term that catches people's attention, but the implementation is where the beef is.
I envy those at the DMB concert right now

Jhag, I'm going a week from Wednesday!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh lucky lucky man
after the franklin experience ended in 2008, tubs should have converted all players to defense and immediately punt on first down if AU was not field goal range or not inside the 10 yard line where the "offense" could run some dive plays to a converted OL or DL at "RB" or QB sneaks to try to get the cheap TD. the punter's skill at pinning teams deep would be of particular importance, but durst was one of the more successful players we had last year anyway.
that way the "offense" had less potential to screw up a good thing and the other team's offense would be worn out from playing every snap of the game against a deep defense. as crazy as that sounds, can anyone say it didn't have any chance of being better than the nallsminger II offense?
Lattimore told an SC newspaper that Auburn leads by a long mile. He said Auburn coaches gave him a booklet that layed out his three year plan at Auburn which included projected goals, stats, etc. He said he had never seen anything like it.
phred is right. if you have foresight, go to las vegas and buy lottery tickets immediately.
i saw that too jhag. i wish he had not divulged the recruiting gameplan.
chiz should have told him to tell everyone AU offered him a lot of money. $aban would quickly call all his boosters and tell them to get their brown paper bags ready, then it would just be a matter of how quickly they got the death penalty.
Lee Corso is out as the mascot head-wearing former coach on the Game Day tour. Also being replaced is host Chris Fowler
Sun just setting in Calgary. 1-1 at end of 1st period. I don't get a lot of sleep this time of year with hockey double headers on just about every night, especially if west coast game goes OT. I pull for west coast teams to stay in the playoffs just to keep the double headers going. I know all you hockey fans in HABOTNland are with me on this one.
was that fowler's punishment for doing UAT's a-day play by play? if so, too lenient.
Mrs THT will be bummed about Fowler being out of game day. She's always had a crush on him. I bet she has said 589 times, "I wonsder how tall he is."
AU on front page of college football news.
it's about all spring games but we got the pic.
http://cfn.scout.com/2/856003.html
I just hope they don't replace him with that bammer Rece Davis
Did someone call for Ms. Tangentialality?
Fowler is fine.
Corso is an epic douche. He hung around waaay too long.
4' 1"
Comic Sans is my new favorite font. I plan to use it in everyday correspondence. Take that internet geek!!
New tangents welcome.
Can we take Vitale, Corso and Holtz and, uh, put them down?
with all the AU engineers here, can't we build a rocket and just shoot 'em all into the sun?
Jet..
That would be the humane thing to do. For their sake, and ours.
I wouldn't want to piss off the sun. We could aim them towards that former planet, Pluto.
A bunch of engineers? We'd never get rid of them. Don't we have any large animal vets here? Just put 'em down. Faster, simpler. Bada bing bada boom.
How about we send on a rocket ... to Uranus ... with a note ... in Comic Sans ... "We're applying for the BC coaching job. Please hire us."
best nba nicknames of all time
http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/gallery/featured/GAL1154621/1/index.htm?bcnn=yes
Stanley Cup factoid- So far this playoff, teams leading after 2 periods are 13-0. I hope AU can have a halftime stat like that as of Dec 6.
I may be in the minority, but I think I would miss Corso. Not a big fan of Fowler or Herbstreit. The only time I saw them in Auburn, Corso was by FAR the friendliest to the audience. Is this a done deal?
Oh wait. Y'all are trying to get rid of Corso, Fowler and my Herbie!?!? No,no, no. That just won't do.
Check this out. This is the opposite of me when I was a kid.
Mon..
We only want to get rid of Corso. I think Fowler's gone too. I believe Herbie's still around.
Monica ...
Corso has gotta go. He's a buffoon who still trying to find his own Easter eggs. He adds nothing.
As for Holtz, I don't think we'll have to worry about him much longer. I've put the odds at even that Mark May snaps his neck before the end of Week 4.
Thank you Jet. I hope to have dreams of Corso's neck snapping tonight.
i'll never forget sitting at the 94 UK game on thursday night with JH chanting "corso sucks" as he walked along the sidelines.
Chip..
The truth is often hard to ignore.
I used to dislike Corso like y'all do, but I don't anymore. Y'all just don't like us old folks. Corso stays.
That Youtube of that little boy is freakin hilarious! It's going on my FB.
My two favorite Corso memories...
1) Him making a crack in 1990 that #2 Tennessee would make Alabama look like a high school team right before Alabama beat them 9-6.
2) Coach Dye blasting him and his coaching ability on Finebaum in the mid 2000's.
i nominate jay g tate to replace fowler.
let the flood of emails to espn begin.
The Corso Fan Club is a lonely place. I can't imagine that show ending without the corny mascot-head thing.
I don't dislike Corso ... it's just he's completely useless.
I don't like Fowler, but I acknowledge that he's good.
Exactly, Depressed. Corso is not useless. He is entertaining. His analysis is good, his insight from the coaches perspective is good, etc. Don't hate, Jet.
That kid CRACKS me up! That look on his face and the spanking move. TOO FUNNY.
Coach Dye:
"Coah-ch Coara-so. Coah-ch Cuhhhruh. They know evahthing. They've been a-expuhts since they got themselves fired."
I like their commercials a lot more than their analysis
LOL Their commercials are delicious.
Wartiger I dont think that the size of the OL was the only factor that stopped the TF experiment but I think it was major. Our offense looked much better during the chik fil-a bowl but that was with the OL at 300lbs.
I went back and checked the stats for Troy in 2007. They had alot of passing yards that kept them in the SEC games, but that was with a veteran QB. Against UF they had 53 rushing yard and 113 against UGA. They did better against ARK (162). Even last year against LSU when they went into the 4th leading 31-10 and lost 31-40, they only had 64 yrds rushing. No way anyone can survive the SEC without some kind of running game. You need the big boys up front for that.
I don't hate him. I pity him.
His analysis is empty, vacuous.
Jet, I can't argue with you on his being useless. I just look at the comments here and see the passion he brings out in people. I think that would be missed on the show, unless there was a great hire made to replace him. Who would that be?
i also liked it when tubs took a shot a holtz after he said AU had no chance against UF saying, "he's not coaching in this league anymore for a reason."
i think that was the scenario anyway.
You clearly hate him. The hate clouds your judgement rendering your analysis empty, vacuous.
There's a humorous Corso moment early in this video, plus it's just awesome.
Corso Luvah!
wow, I miss Brandon
I met him once in New Orleans ... in line at Cafe du Monde, when Mrs. Jet and I were getting some cafe au lait and beignets. Seems like a nice guy.
If it's about passion, I'm cool with that. But let's have passion without wasted goofiness.
And while we're getting rid of people ... For Whom the Bus Cranks? Spencer Tillman, it cranks for thee.
Marcus Lattimore writes "war eagle lol" to Tyrik Rollison today...nice
if we are lucky they will hire the host of the 12th best sports talk show in the country, mr. slimebaum.
this would accomplish:
1. the state of alabama not being subjected to his bs on a daily basis
2. reveal to the rest of the country what a tool he is.
3. expand his hate club nationally.
4. destroy any tiny shred of journalistic integrity he has left when some asks him what he thinks of the usc vs. ohio state game and he goes into a diatribe about how bammer's 3rd team could beat them both.
Spencer Tillman is terrible, and on a personal note, no man should be allowed to wear that much make-up.
Just got an e-mail from Knology: "We are pleased to announce that Knology has reached an agreement with Turner Broadcasting System to telecast 45 regular season Atlanta Braves games from Peachtree TV that were exclusively carried in the Atlanta market. These 45 games are now available to you in addition to Atlanta Braves game coverage on FOX Sports South, SportSouth, Fox and ESPN. This gives you 100% of Atlanta Braves games for the 2009 season on Knology. "
Nice Kathy! does that mean ill get it on TBS down in Florida?
congratulation to kathy and the rest of montgomery.
you can now watch the braves go 10-35 in those 45 games.
I love Corso - i know he is hokey with the mascot head and everything, but I still love him!
my teams:
Auburn
New Orleans Saints
Atlanta Braves
needless to say, i have not had much to cheer about in the last few years.
You can also get all of the Braves games on Direct TV in Birmingham. We only get Peachtree TV when the Braves are playing. Watching them lose 2-3 in the bottom of the 7th.
Knology is worse than Charter, and hat takes screw ups of epic proportions. Seriously, if Charter was Mississippi, Knology would be New Jersey.
Actually I live in Madison in North Alabama.
You know who's mascot head he ain't wearin'.
Dr. Lou picks us to lose and we win...i like it
congratulations to north alabama in general then. i wasn't aware of knology's coverage area.
go braves!
Many years ago, I watched the Braves religiously. I lost interest when Ted sold them and the strike. It was nice to have that extra free time in the summer!
Holtz is an embarrassment. I'm surprised someone in his family hasn't talked him into stepping down for his own sake.
Remember when Holtz said we had as much of a chance of beating Florida as he had being elected senator? I bought the "The Holtz for Thenator" t shirt. I love it!
Completely off topic, but I do like the service you get from The Apple Store. Broke 2 keys on my MacBook, from a flying telephone. Took it to the Apple Store Friday night. They replaced the whole keyboard within 12 hours and didn't charge me a thing. That was service with a smile.
cincy, there is probably no logic to it, but I enjoy Corso and I can hardly watch Holtz. They both act kind of goofy, but Corso makes me laugh while Lou leaves me shaking my head.
depressed,
I understand that logic completely. I laugh at Corso, but Holtz makes me want to throw things at the TV.
Well, Braves are in ANOTHER rain delay. I just can't do it. Off to bed. Goodnight hotties :)
cincy- you can turn to hockey during the rain delay
THT,
That is one sport I just haven't been able to get into. I can't keep up with the puck. I took my 80 year old grandmother to a St. Louis Blues game one time. It was hilarious how this little southern lady got into that game!
Vanderbilt has a QB named Jared Funk. Now, that is the type of QB I want. With a name like Funk, he has to be tough. I can imagine the nicknames. Hey funker, get over here.
Toodles
funk me? funk you!
gnite.
Somebody get him the Funk out of here
mr. marshall at AU undercover reports some interesting tidbits in his for your eyes only section if you have access.
i will respect his request not to repost to other sites, but i imagine we can expect to hear about these thing from our man jgt tomorrow.
Depressed,
I think the reason you can deal with Corso and not Holtz is that Corso is in on the joke and playing along...while Holtz doesn't know what he is saying is off the wall.
Holtz seriously believes that Notre Dame, South Carolina, Minnesota & Arkansas are going to win every week just because he used to coach there.
Corso knows how to play a crowd and knows he's a part of a joke.
Good morning, Hotties!
I can't stand Holtz's speech impediment.
Good Morning all!!
I don't have a problem with Holtz.
Corso makes me throw up in my mouth.
I hate those bits they do with Holtz, esp. Dr. Lou.
Do you want to dislike Scarbinsky a little bit more (if possible)? Here ya go.
I agree with Scarbinsky's article. We have no excuse for turning down that game.
It's funny, the Auburn fans think he's a Bammer, the Bama fans think he's an Aubie.
It's amazing the number of people who enjoy Puppet Hour and some of the tangents we get off on on this site, but have to have their College Gameday 100% serious, take Corso seriously and think he should have journalistic integrity.
RK..
Putting the decision aside, it was the tone and delivery of the article that gets under my skin. That is the case more often than not with him.
I'm not expecting Corso to have journalistic integrity, I just expect him to go away.
If I had written an article on the topic it would be far more brutal than what Scarbinsky had written.
I had no issue with his tone, he was getting his point across. I think we need to be called out when we turn down opportunities like this.
What I find funny are the posts below his article, I'm amazed at the people who comment on AL.com who think their world has ended because someone writes an article that they disagree with.
That being said, I love the Nigel Tufnel pic.

SO Tubs is gonna be the next Bob Davie and take over one of the day game analyst slots on ESPN?
Morning Hotties - dang working for the man and family stuff keeps getting in my HABOTN way.
I agree completely with Scarbinsky's column. I can take criticism and I think this is completely fair and 100% accurate. I'd like for Jacobs to be traded to another school for a player to be named later. If that deal can't be arranged, maybe trade him somewhere (anywhere) for a case of beer.
Mon-Never imagined you as a Corso fan..really the guy gets on my nerves too...he's nuttin but a gimmick...
We're giving up a national matchup for a game against Arkansas State that could be easily rescheduled.
The whole "we are already playing Clemson in 2010" doesn't sit well with me either. Big deal, we're playing Clemson, why can't we also play the Pac 10's equal of Clemson on a "neutral site" in our own back yard in the same year?
Don't ask me how, but I ended up wathcing a College "susperstars" show this past weekend. Guest host was "Former Ole Miss and Auburn HC Tommy Tuberville". Said he'd still like to coach, but he thinks he'd like to go out west and try his hand out there.
I just found that to be a very interesting comment on his part
Corso isn't a journalist -- don't expect him to be one.
He's an analyst. He's supposed to be funny. I don't find him particularly effective at either.
Holtz is worse. He's either a liar or a brain-damaged. There is no other logical explanation.
As for Scarbinsky, he grew up near Penn State and moved with his family to L.A. (lower Alabama) and ended up at Troy State.
I think Kevin's fair. On this point, I think he's wrong, but that's not a popular opinion around here.
Corso is a gimmick, and I understand that. He's playing a role. Most fans who get upset at him don't understand that and think he's trying to be serious.
I think the deal is pretty obvious. They're scared of Auburn being embarrassed on national TV, right? I mean, what's worse beating the lower division team early in the season like you're supposed to (because you still aren't positive how good your team is) or being wiped (again) by the PAC-10?
Dr.Lou is a fantastic segment. I hope they keep it, even though Holtz moves to Gameday.
I'm a bit disappointed for Corso to be out, but Holtz, Herbie, and Karl Ravech will be fine. If they aren't I'll just listen to Sensi during that time slot.
since we are talking about Jacobs..what are ya'll issues with him..Lebo and chizick are the only hires he's made as far as coaches go right..Lebo has done ok..and we don't know what to expect from CGC..what am I missing that makes Jay so incompetent and everybody want him gone? If he is gone who do ya'll think for replacing him?
Saying Auburn is scared to play UCLA is like saying Auburn is jealous of UAT. Neither is true, but you can't convince the other side of it. It makes me angry.
My head will explode in 3..2..1
Defense of Jay Jacobs...interesting. I complain about him because I want his job.
I thought Baird hired Lebo, not Jacobs. I could be wrong.
Ehyou, you don't think the admin is concerned about the perception of our team if Auburn doesn't perform up to its potential against UCLA early in the season? I keep thinking back to South Fl, and the GT games.
I don't think anyone is saying Auburn is afraid to play UCLA, just that the decision not to play them wasn't the right one for the program in the big picture. It's a perception thing. Plus it's losing a big prime time network game that could help with recruiting and showcasing Auburn football. Which is worth more in the long run than the 8th home football game of the year that nobody will watch.
Jacobs is just a puppet of the board and the old guard at Auburn.
Jacobs doesn't come across as a leader at all and most people in the know scoff at his "authority".
I don't have any inside info. I could be totally wrong. I honestly don't believe whether we would win or lose the game was a factor in their decision.
i agree with Scarbinsky. no excuse with not taking the game in Atlanta. it would've been fun.
i could've understood more if the game was in L.A. but it's in the ATL. 2 freakin' hours away from Auburn. he boost in exposure.....positive exposure......would've been nice.
Exactly RK. Auburn would be way better off to play UCLA and get the exposure and publicity than to play the 8th home game against Western Kentucky or some other Championship Division team. All about the Benjamins and it sucks.
Also in turning the game down, the networks will be less likely to propose these types of games to us in the future.
It doesn't seem like a lot of long term decision making went into turning this game down.
Everything RK has said in this thread = Ditto for me
Phred - Congrats
Eddie-I don't know for sure..my bad...
thanks for the input everyone, I still have lots to learn about "big picture" stuff.
I second that we shoulda played UCLA..I just shake my head..That's Jacobs fault completely then right?
gatiger-I was thinking a player to be named later and a 10 lb. bag of Ole Diz charcoal.
I agree with Scarbinsky. Call us out. We deserve this. Shameful for not scheduling this game.
Delta's already grounding the 747's they got from Northwestern to "save costs." How is it that spending all of that money to update the cockpit , repaint, and remodel the interiors, only to ground the planes is good business sense. I say play UCLA, dammit.
Good morning troops, does anyone know anything about the b-ball player who is supposed to be deciding between AU and MS ST today?
BTW from al.com 2/5/09:
Lebo was hired from Chattanooga in 2004 by Hal Baird, who was serving as de-facto athletic director between the retirement of David Housel and the hiring of Jacobs.
there you go then..so Jacobs hasn't really done that much anyway? A puppet for the old regime..that's why we are not playing UCLA?! I am just confused I that...
Does this scheduling thing go to Jimmy and Bobby too?
Currently working on a new thread.
Topic: Spring winners.
re: Jacobs.
I concur.
are we all waiting on the new thread?
Wartiger,
Money is the reason we aren't playing UCLA. We'll make more for 8 home games, that we would for a neutral site game.
Nothing more, nothing less. It's all about the little picture and getting money right away, rather than the big picture.
I go to work for money. I hope no one writes a scathing article about me any time soon.
Michael,
Do you put money in a 401K or a retirement fund, or do you just take as much money as you can get right now without looking to the future?
Boxhead - I suspect that any future scathing articles about you will have to do with your illicit activities regarding your "business".
so basically AU is run by plp who love AU but wanna get paid first..
I just think it's short sighted, focused on money and a bad PR move.
I do put money in a 401K. If Auburn started putting money in a 401K, do you think the critics would be appeased?
gatiger - don't worry. I've made a deal with the journalists that ensures my business will run smoothly without any investigative reporting any time soon. Even journalists can be bought. You have no idea how much most journalists like cheez-its and capri suns.
I view the UCLA game as a future investment. The initial monetary payoff is less than the home game vs Arkansas State, but the long term benefits if played properly will be far greater.
