A-Day Basics

Hey everyone. Here are some numbers from A-Day, which you may or may not find significant.

PASSING
N. Caudle was 11-of-16 for 161 yards and 2 TDs.
K. Burns was 3-of-8 for 48 yards.

RUSHING
O. McCalebb had 2 carries for 75 yards, 1 TD
B. Tate had 4 carries for 72 yards

RECEIVING
D. Adams caught four balls for 103 yards, 1 TD
M. Fannin caught four balls for 71 yards

MVPs
Wes Byrum (special teams) ... hit a 46-yard FG
Michael Goggans (defense) ... two tackles, one sack
Ben Tate (offense) ... see above

RECRUITING FALLOUT
Our friends at AuburnSports.com and AuburnUndercover.com are reporting that Mississippi OL Shon Coleman has committed to the Tigers. He is the fourth player to make that leap. Coleman is 6-foot-7 and weighs 275 pounds. Players in the 2010 class aren't yet rated by the recruiting services, but I expect him to emerge as a three-star guy.

The blackmailer knows that Pitino killed Manolo for marrying his kid sister Gina, even though he warned him not to touch her. The blackmailer threatened to turn Pitino into the cops for Manolo's death. The cops are scared of Pitino after he killed the dirty cop, Mel Bernstein, in Frank Lopez's office. That's when Manolo killed Lopez at Pitino's order.

Pitino, though, took care of the problem blackmailer, and said, "Say hello to my little friend."

Where depth issues will hurt is so obvious. OL, LB, and probably interior DL as well.

Will be interesting to see if Brandon Jacobs makes it to AU vs. pro baseball. And, will be enter into the LB rotation or play at the) position where we're blessed and still growing (two 5 stars look like leans).

Dee Ford. Will he enter into the LB rotation? Will he play a hybrid role - LB/DE? He's light for either position but an absolute standout wherever he's been.

Nick Fairley, can you be perfect?

Savage, Lykes, Wadley...don't know...

OL? Got nothing to talk about behind the first wave right now. Sullen looks to me like he'll need a year's worth of Yoxercise. Same with Moore.

One more...

It's amazing what 5lbs of additional lean mass did to Mario's arms. Look at that pic on the front page. Good grief. Even his lower legs are unmistakably bigger. Remember, he's only a junior. Ronnie Brown wasn't a star until his senior season. He never had a legitimate shot or a full season to showcase his stuff until then.

Also, I think (I hope) Ben Tate is changing my mind about his speed. He definitely looked the 4.4 he's bragged about lately on that 45 yard scamper. Just a different stride altogether from him. He exploded. He's always seemed to have a good burst but it died out after about 20 actual yards. He was in fifth gear when he hit the 10 yard line yesterday on the long run. Looks promising.

*McCalebb is special. Enough said.

8:59 AM
Blogger chip chip said...

tate had to run 15 yards to the sideline last year before he started up field. by the time he got 20 yards down field, he had actually run about 35. if the play went to the short side, as usual, he was simply forced out of bounds. tate has alway been good going n/s.
it was kinda like jason campbell's lateral passing yards in 2003. he would throw a 25 yard pass across the field that netted about 3-5 positive yards. if "lateral" yards were included, he probably threw for 300+ a game that year.

9:54 AM
Blogger chip chip said...

i agree with DL.

AU will pay for its lack of depth in the loss column in 2009.

3-4 injuries at already thin positions or to QBs will put true freshmen on the field. and you all know what happens then...

Chip, he definitely has a frame proportioned for a bball player. Athletic. Hope he puts on 20 or so in a year's time. If so, he'll at least look college ready.

Exactly right on Tate. That's why I used the term "actual" to refer to the yard he had to run to get to the LOS.

based on pugh's comments, i think chizik understands the importance of team chemistry and everyone (coaches & players & trainers etc.) being on the same page. he saw what chemistry with talent can do at AU in 2004 and TX in 2005 first hand and is doing his best to duplicate that and sustain it at AU.

We are in trouble if McElroy gets hurt. That is unless A.J. is ready to go.

Star has more physical gifts than any of the ones currently down there. His problem seems to be in going through his progressions. The best comparison I can make is that he is a little like Kodi was last year.

6:12 PM
Blogger wtc said...

That is not good news for you then if he can not go through the progressions. That should be taught in QB 101. I think many athletes that are qb's do that becasue they can get away with their athleticism in high schoool. However, the look off one guy and run mentality will get them hurt in college.

I have no idea on AJ. My hope is that the light comes on for Star enough so that they can run some sort of package for him as a change of pace at times next year. The Wrs had better fundamentals, but still need to be more athletic.

Burns played the first half with the 1st O against the 2nd/3rd D. He really didn't do much. The O scored b/c of breakaways against the inferior D. Kodi's passing fundamentals got worse as the game progressed.

Caudle started rough, but didn't have much help from the 2nd O while playing against the 1st D. He looked better as the game progressed. His 2nd half TD pass to DAdams was as good as I've seen at AU in 2 years.

We ran the ball upfield with a 2 back set out of the shotgun. The OL knocked the 2nd string D around and it looked good.

Auburn's starters are pretty good at most positions, but when the reserves come into the game, I think the difference between AU and LSU, Bama etc starts to show. I'm curious, do you think Auburn will surprise to the good, or do you see some of the other teams not being as good as expected? Not meant as an insult, just a honest question.

This is way early, WarTiger, but why not. Just based on what I've seen/read from these teams this spring:

Mississippi State - WinW
est Virginia - Loss
Ball State - Win
Tennessee - Loss/Win*
Arkansas - Loss
Kentucky - Loss
LSU - Loss
Ole Miss - Loss
Furman (HC)- Win
Georgia - Loss
Alabama - Loss

*The Tennessee game is up in the air. They are talented in so many places, but have QB issues as well. Also, Kiffin may not be able to discipline them.

Next year is going to be a complete rollercoaster ride. I can see it being very similar to Ole Miss's year last season. Beating teams we have no business beating, but playing close and losing games to teams we should. 8-4 looks about right, there aren't any sure fire juggernauts on the schedule.

Bark,

Arky is going to be a sneaky team next year. Very good QB. Good RB. Solid line and WRs and the defense should be improved. Plus, it's a home game for them and you know Fayetteville is a tough place.

And Rich Brooks has built a winner (for their standards) at Kentucky. They are in a lot better shape than Auburn is.

WVU lost the heart and soul of last years team. If AU had competent coaching last year, we could have run them out of their own house. i've read about their 5th yr sr. who has never started. he seems to have the maturity but little game experience, especially on the road. I also think they lost some of their other playmakers, but devine is still there and he is a handful.

i'm not sure what UK has in their bag next year? i keep up with vandy more than them in fb.

i can't overstate how the depth issues will affect AU in 2009. few injuries and 9-10 wins is possible. a few key injuries to OL or QB or LB 3-5 wins is likely. i think there is a better chance we could pick a perfect ncaa bball bracket than predict AU's record in 2009.

Barkley....If he goes 4-8, I hope that the AU fans don't really act like Bammers as you suggest they will.

Give the man a chance. Just b/c some other SEC schools are neurotic doesn't mean we should be also.

I think we should win either the WV game or the TN game tho dropping them both wouldn't shock me..would be sweet for CGC to be saban his first you here..could be a tall order tho...

I'm not arguing with ya, Sensi. Just saying, he was on a short leash the day he got hired.... If he goes 4-8 in his first year and loses some games he is supposed to win.....it could get ugly quick.

I don't know who we'll beat, or who will beat us, but the good thing about being an Auburn fan is that you can go into every game with a realistic chance to win. I remember when we were 18 point dogs to UF in the swamp a couple of years ago and we came out on top.. AUsome

Love your avatar ehyoutiger, but I laugh at anyone who thinks global warming is all hype. I can understand the bickering over man made/influenced versus naturally occurring/cyclical, but to say the whole thing is "media created" is comical.

I still love your School House Rock avatar. :-)

Chip,

That WVU QB who never started has played a lot in place of said heart and soul.

That team is loaded enough to beat Auburn.

Injuries are going to be a big key; you are dead on about that.

Mon..
I was just saying I respected Spann for making such a statement in his profession. Those issues are never as one-sided as the zealots would have you believe. There are naturally occurring as well as man made effects.

Blogger Monica said...

If we don't beat WVU this time I'm going to be shocked. Pat White is gone, they have a new, struggling QB, their spring game was a weak showing for the D and it's in Auburn.

Mon,

The best things about the WVU game are:

- it's in Auburn
- it's early in the year (hopefully coming out of the first two games injury free)

Sensi, they had a decent team last year, not a good team, a decent team. We were on the road and had every chance to win with our trainwreck team last year. Their team will be missing their MVP, I don't care who is on the bench, that team WON'T be as good. They're coming to Auburn early. Noel Devine is a good player, but keep the ball away from him and make the new QB pass and we should win easy.

In a perfect world with ZERO major injuries:

Louisiana Tech - W 33-17
Mississippi State - W 27-20
West Virginia - W 23-21
Ball State - W 30-10
at Tennessee - L 14-19
at Arkansas - L 31-17
Kentucky - W 27-23
at LSU - L 10-20
Ole Miss - L 17-27
Furman (HC)- W 47-6
at Georgia - L 20-21
Alabama - W 19-17 somehow i got a feeling about this one at home.

if bama is playing for 3rd in sec west, they can be had at JH. AU should be ready for that one after last year and gus will pull out all the stops.i just think the rebs and corndogs have too much QB power for the rest of us. but injuries can change that balance of power as well...

8:45 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Sensi, it's funny, for all the talk of the Auburn offense last year, the defense had some horrid performances as well. The poor offense surely had some effect on the D, but the tackling was horrible in several games. I never understood all of the Paul Rhoads glowing reviews.

Seanzie,

You've got the gameplan right, but there is very little that will come easy to this team next year. However, that produces character in the right players and will pay dividends as they mature and the younger guys mature as well. Remember, the 2004 team was also the 2002 and 2003 team. The 1993 team was the 1991 and 1992 team.

UT can be had, they're worse off than we are. Arkansas got lucky a couple of times last year and they're doing good things but they aren't exactly world beater and Petrino isn't know for playing good defense.

I don't trust you. They've got some talent on defense, not a lot. Their offense will keep them in bad spots. I'm not sure Ole Man River will get the same production out of his defense with lesser skilled players and I'm not convinced their defense was ever that good to begin with.

The one team in the SEC with as bad/worse QB problems than Auburn is Tennessee.

I believe this team can do better than some think if they get some confidence early and build on it as the season goes. Of course we all know that the season rides on the shoulders of the O line and few injuries.
