Looking ahead to A-Day, Part I
Hey everyone. So we're coming up on the most anticipated Auburn A-Day in a decade. There will be plenty of side stories worthy of regard as things unfold Saturday.
You wanna know which player-related tangents I find most appealing? Sure you do.

You wanna know which player-related tangents I find most appealing? Sure you do.
- Quarterbacks: That's the story at this point. To put an even tighter focus on it, I want to know if Neil Caudle is as bad as Tony Franklin reported. I sense that his skill set -- specifically his cleaner throwing mechanics -- eventually may lead him to the starting lineup.
- Onterio McCalebb: As I said on the Gridiron Breakdown earlier this week, McCalebb has a singularity of purpose I haven't seen at Auburn since Rudi Johnson. Can McCalebb provide the same kind of boost Johnson made during the 2000 season? Probably not, but we'll be able to see Saturday if McCalebb is capable of immediate contribution.
- Mike Slade: Can he play? He looked pretty good the one time I noticed him playing in 2008 ... at Ole Miss.
- Justin Albert: You looking for a sleeper in your Auburn Fantasy Football draft? His walk-on status will keep the bidding low, but it's clear offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn believes in Albert. The former Prattville tailback will have a (previously unforseen) chance to make a mark in 2009 ... provided that trust remains steadfast through the summer. Why is Malzahn smitten? Saturday could provide some answers.
- Defensive front freelancing: DT Mike Blanc indicated last week that assistant coach Tracy Rocker wants his players "doing what they do best." Blanc, a noted "bull" rusher, said he's been given the green light to use that technique as needed. Will Rocker's relaxed approach to conformity of technique result in better production?

How can this be? Number #1
#3, Robert Dunn
I know more of you are up this morning and I just logged on....are ya'll slow this am?
Morning peeps. 2 days until the Tigers take the field.
WEG odd is it not? I thought I was late and here everyone is MIA...
Are we in a twilight zone?
I still like Kodi's personal presence on the videos but I am getting excited about Neil.
I liking all the stories about the others.
It was a slow morning, so I was a little slow on the refresh.
If you read the pre-college hoopla from the recruiting services, Caudle sounded like a legit prospect who just had some unfortunate injury luck. At this point I don't trust Tony Franklin's evaluation of anything other than his own willingness to run the zone-read in ill-advised situations.
Let's start the day by not mentioning TF or TT all day. I hate reliving the past like some other people I know.
Hey WEG, I was just musing based off of what Jay posted on the blog, get mad at him, he brought it up.
WEG! Well done.
I've got your back on this one, Sean.
Seanzie,
Tower and Green's both carry Firefly. I'm thinking any nice liquor store in ATL does.
You the man, Jay.
Circus or University?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx3cmeLhEcg&eurl=http://blogs.ajc.com/georgia-football-recruiting/2009/04/16/topless-at-tennessee-part-three-bruce-pearl-shows-some-skin-but-la&feature=player_embedded
Sam, you are a scholar and gentleman, much thanks.
Tony Franklin and Tubs were incompetent geniuses.
Oh no... not mad! Just ready to move on to the new regime! :)
Morning Hotties - I've missed the HABOTN while I've been away. Some points:
1 - I can't make A-Day but it is on CSS (supposedly) around here so I hope to be watching.
2 - I would really like to know how J-Z liked the "midget wrestling" at his local watering hole last week.
3 - I'm absolutely FED UP with Comcast and am giving consideration to Satellite. I'd appreciate any commentary you folks can provide me on that front. Feel free to check my profile and shoot me an email if you have some good information.
They always said there was a fine line between genius and madness, we all hoped the Tony Franklin experiment would have been the former, as we saw, it was the latter. I still get sick over that ridiculous reverse call.
I'm just a positive person! I was sick all last season and am tired of wringing my hands over it.
Wonder if we can pretend it didn't happen like the all the season of Dallas?!
I went to school during the Doug Barfield era so I know how to move on.
WEG, I spent all last season pissed off. I'm over it and ready to move on to this season and all the great seasons to come!
Just remember everyone, Bama ended their season the same way we did, 0-2. That always puts a smile on my face.
Tim Jessie.
My only point on the old coaching staff was how their mistakes will affect the new staff. It's hard to discuss players, depth etc. without mentioning how Chizik and Co are not exactly inheriting a full roster of players. I thought Tuberville deserved the same treatment(even moreso) when he followed Bowden. I just want the Chizik staff to be given a fair chance to show what they can do with a few position upgrades.
Sean, that definitely put a smile on my face!
Got to work for a living today......catch you Hotties later!
Did anyone watch that video yet from my 8:30am post? I want to know what the heck is going on up there! Is there Mercury in the water supply or something?
Great insights JGT. Your commentary is actually what I enjoy most about the site. That and the irrelevant but endearing banter that occurs within the HABOTN.
Sam, as much as I'd like to watch and leave my thoughts, the man has YouTube locked down, Chinese style.
Irrelevant? Conversation between Hottie friends is irrelevant?
Irrelevent in the sense that Monica said our fan opinions don't matter, yes.
I watched it...
better living through chemicals...
will life suck if we realize that it's all irrelevant? I don't think so.I think it would still be fun.
As I said before, I still make jokes/complain about Bowden's recruiting and he hasn't been here in 10 years.
Nothing wrong about discussing the previous coaching staff when what they did or didn't do has direct effect on the current team.
Right, DL. Is there no NCAA drug policy for shirtless coaches?
Sam I watched the vid, and I can honestly say the first thing that popped in my head were the letters wtf?
irrelevant might be a bit harsh. "disconnected", "disjointed", "non-sports related"...you get the idea.
This about puppets isn't wes.
Loving the Fantasy Draft stuff.
That would be fun to do here.
Sean..
You're better off not seeing it. It was U-G-L-Y.
Mike Fuller
Do you guys think Tuberville should have been given the chance to fix things his way?
Oustanding play, Tar Heel Tiger. Nice. Very nice.
I played the Tim Jessie card since he sat next to me in Dr. Cronenberg's History 101 class. When I was there.
What a classy guy. Tim Jessie, that is.
Who are Mike Fuller and Tim Jessie?
Michael ...
I would offer that saving his job after 2003 was his "second chance," which offers a re-opening of the "be careful about playing two BCS teams at the beginning of the season" discussion.
What happened after this season and how it happened is inconsequential to me.
What I saw was a "tired old coach" who didn't convey the energy of someone up to the task of what was ahead. He looked like Sonny Smith did 20 years ago in hoops. It was just time.
Luv, Tim Jessie was a RB during the Jackson/Agee/Fullwood era.
Mike Fuller was an All-American DB/Punt Returner in the 70's.
Tim Jessie, RB, Opp, Alabama, 1982 (redshirt) -- through 1986. A wonderful role-playing RB behind Bo Jackson, Lionel James, and Brent Fullwood.
One of his roles was to be the RB on the pitch to the RB/reverse to the receiver play that we used to great success in the mid-1980s, most famously to Lawyer Tillman in the 1986 win over UAT.
Yo Bro,
you could have prefaced your remarks with "Sedrick McIntyre"
Thanks to your "Tim Jessie", I'm just sitting here trying to think of former players' numbers.
Jay G, where are you going to be Saturday? I got to meet the man behind the blog!!
I believe it was Tim Jessie who gave the ball to Tillman on the reverse that beat Alabama in 86.
Jet beat me to it.
LUV - my alzheimer's doesn't allow me to remember many players numbers from last season, but I do recall those of my youth.
greg carr
i always thought it was cool McIntyre's name was spelled with a C. Scedrick. dunno why but it's cool.
speaking of Tim Jessie, does anyone know what he's up to? where he lives? just curious.
yes indeed, I believe it was Secdrick, but I didn't want to bother searching. I didn't even bother to verify he was #44, but I think he was
I liked Secdrick and Mitzi Jackson
I'm oh so excited for Oneterio
Correct spelling, I believe, is "Secedrick."
He was the Lectron Williams of his era ... an incredible back who was diminished by injuries that began in HS.
Just glad he procreated Jeris.
Scotti B,
Every time I see your avatar I want to feed it to my dog so she can chew the stuffing out of it
Can we forget John Crane, Tar Heel?
I'm to blame for Scottie's avatar, so I apologize to him, and let him know that it's OK to change.
ok Jet, you made me break down and google.
It is Secdrick McIntyre
Bro Jet, I can. He was a QB?
was he a #14?
Yes .... maybe the worst in AU history.
I'll stand by this, the worst QB that I can recall us having was Pat Washington. The 84 and 85 teams should have been much better, but he wasn't a threat to do anything so we were left with disappointment both years.
i feel ya THT. it's just a visual of my hatred of all things crimson & houndstooth. i thought earlier it may be time for a change. i'll ponder my next move.
"Pat's gonna pitch it to Bo. He's gonna break a tackle, he's gonna break another tackle.......BYE BYE BO!"
Washington was awful, Burger played some in 85 and was a little bit better, but any decent QB play in 84 and 85 and we would have been able to live up to the pre-season hype.
Nobody really knew how good Randy Campbell was at running that offense until he was gone.
So, who was our starting QB in '72 post Sully?
I think it was Randy Wall in '73; was he also QB in '72?
Wade Whatley was Gator Bowl MVP in '72 because starter was injured
Phillip Gargis?
72 is way before my time, but that's my guess.
Phil came along at end of '73 and was full time starter in '74, his soph yr.
As an example of the great firepower of the Amazins' offense, Whatley was Gator Bowl MVP with these stats:
passing 3-6-0, 42 yards
rushing 13 for 20 yards
Someone tell me that the A-Day game is available on TV, at least PPV. This is the first A-Day I have really gotten excited to see.
While the QB situation is intriguing, we are about 3 offensive line injuries away from the twilight zone.
Steve,
only if you have CSS on your cable/satellite.
I do not. I will be making the 1000 mile road trip
Crap, I think I have FSS or some other screwed up acronym. Wish I could be there, but I don't travel well.
SteveFC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comcast/Charter_Sports_Southeast
I travel well only if I'm driving. I feel yucky if I'm a passenger. Must have something to do with equilibrium
Randy Walls QBd in 1972, but broke his leg or injured his knee in Gator Bowl practice, setting up the Wade Whatley apperance.
THT, i get motion sick too. it sucks....bad.
Bro Jet comes through in the clutch!
This is disturbingJust one more reason why I'm glad I don't have children.
Scottie B, have you ever gone really fast in the Disney World tea cups and leaned your head back and, because of centrifugal force, not been able to get your head back up until the ride was over? I wanted to throw up for at least 2 hours afterwards. I think that's the worst thing about motion sickness, I never really get sick. Seems like a good puke would cure things but it never gets that far.
John Madden announced his retirement today.
Why has Blogger not been skipping two spaces before entering my comment lately?
I am not a Charter person. I am a Time Warner person. Dang it. Someone will have to give a play by play in here. On the lighter side, some of my stock sold today, so that is pretty cool.
My prediction of the A-Day is that it is the opportunity for one of the QBs to eliminate themselves from competition.
i am scared of spinning tea cups. it will never happen.
oh, and i'm back to being myself again. no more houndstooth. yack.
John Madden is one of my favorite announcers. I hate to see him go. He had the unique ability to make the simple seem complex and the complex, simple.
Ehyou ...
She shore has you on a short lease, Hi.
Yeah, who wears the pants in the family?
So who will be taking his place next to Al?
Doesn't seem apropos that Madden and Favre would go out together?
Thanks Scottie B; I'll be able to keep my lunch down now.
The tea cups were 35+ years ago. I do not do spinning rides of any sort. Not even a merry-go-round.
Up and down roller coasters are fun, though.
SteveFC - I'm stuck with TWC, too. I hate it, but have been too lazy to switch to satellite.
TarHeel, speaking of switching, whatever happened with the pile of rubble in your man cave?
So, were any plans for HABOTN get together this weekend, or do we all want to preserve our anonymity
Hi Luv,
It's still there, just moved off to the side. Thanks for bringing that up.
While I will be in the Auburn-Opelika metroplex, Mrs. Jet has mandated I attend ElTurbo's concert rather than the game.
ElTurbo is mad at me. I'm mad at me. But if Mama ain't happy ...
i'll be stuck in east tennessee. i'll be tuned in for HABOTN updates and watching on CSS, though.
rubble in the man cave???!!! say it isn't so.

Jet..
Your quote was so apropos, that I thought you were speaking to me personally the first time I read it!
100 + Devin Aromashodu
THT, i was thinking Edmund Nelson, #99.
200 - Mike Campbell = 103
David Beverly? +100
How about Joe Sullivan +100
somebody call me out if I'm wrong. I'm just guessing with most of these, and probably annoying many Hotties with all of these
What else are going to do ... talk about the BC coaching situation?
Jerry Beasley +100 thinks BC coaching situation is a huge mess
Was it Ken Alvis or Tommy Powell at #9; I always get them confused
The BC administration made the bed in which they lie IMO.
Both Powell and Alvis were 9.
And the Caudle news is music to my ears.
do i sense an underground CAUDLE movement?
help this mentally impaired hottie, I'm blocking on our #11 QB from circa 1980
I'll start the chant and see who follows...
Kodi...Kodi..
Caudle scares me to death. I'm not jumping up and down for Kodi ... I was hoping Trotter would emerge.
It's hard to have faith in a guy who last played significant playing time at QB in the same time frame as Greg Paulus.
I'll try to have a positive attitude. That's why I hate I won't be at the game Saturday.
i think he played some receiver, also
what a waste is my terrible mind
Clayton Beauford
It's never been an underground movement for me. Above-ground, top floor of the Empire State Building in fact, since, oh, Kodi's first "start".
Granted, it'll probably be a "pick your poison" situation...but I'll pick the poison that hasn't already killed us.
I heard that Paulus is making a QB comeback of sorts. Co-inky dink that Caudle is making a push at the same time?
Bro Jet you are DA MAN!
CAUDLE + PAULUS = BLOOD BROTHERS? HMMM.....
Clayton Beuford. i had forgotten about him.
The Caudle news is good to me. It always sounded like his deal was making bad decisions, throwing interceptions, etc. After watching Kodi Burns last year, he has the same problem plus bad mechanics plus no touch on any kind of long ball. He is fast, but falls over his own two feet pretty often.
So basically, I don't think we will have a good qb next year, so might as well give the other guy a shot.
Beauford, Charlie Thomas, Joe Sullivan, Pat Washington. Man, we had some horrible QB's back then.
Charlie Thomas is the name I was looking for. Thanks!!! Now I can go to my dental appointment with a calm mind.
...DENTAL APPT!!??!!?? YIKES!!!
oh how I hate going there. See y'all l8r
Griff,
Charlie Trott not deserving of your list?
Charlie Trotman was limited in ability, but not a bad QB.
Pat Washington was not a bad QB either. Not great, but not bad.
Charlie Thomas was a handgrenade. Beauford was dreadful. Joe Sullivan was misnamed.
Bro Jet- your sully comment made me spit the toothpaste right out of my mouth! Funny!!!
What about Gabe Gross? That was my freshman yr. It was painful. We drank ALOT that FB season.
Will ...
Gabe was aptly named.
Gabe is a pretty good baseball player.
TarHeel, my memory is TERRIBLE too. I blame it on all the alcohol I drank in college and my early 20's.
I have to go to the dentist today too. Yuck.
You have to admit though, for a QB, he was one heck of a baseball player.
but Gabe turned out to be a heckuva baseball player.
him and his wife were good swing dancers back in college if i remember correctly.
Will, you beat me!
And I beat Will, Scottie.
But hey it's not a contest right, that is, unless I win, then it's always a contest.
Scotie B, you mean like wife-swappin'?
swing dancers?
Will, I had to read scottie's post twice!
Gross wasn't good, but I'm not sure any QB would have been good in 98. We were on our 5th string center by the 1st game in October.
Y'all must be involved in all kinds of shenanigans.
Who here is headed to the game Saturday?
I will be there in spirit.
sorry Seanzie.
We didn't get to play golf last weekend and since it's going to rain on Sunday, we're staying home and playing golf. In April, golf trumps football. If it were fall, screw golf!
Luv, how's that slice?
I'll be there Mon. I will save you a beer and a seat on the ice chest, right next to Harrison.
Hey, Monica, do you ever make it to any games?
Seanzie, I tried your suggestion...it didn't help. :-(
If AU played FB on 12/25 every yr, FB would trump Christmas. Nothing will ever trump AU FB for me....even if it is just a glorified practice.
Really? That's odd, that's the easiest way to fix a slice, maybe start your swing with your club's face closed a little bit.
As for who should be the starter at QB, I don't have a preference. Kodi is the only one I have seen a lot of, so it is hard to tell.
What should they do? Make the quarterbacks live. Pass a lot. Let the QB that survives have the job.
As for the offensive line, maybe we need some players playing iron man football.
Seanzie, I'll try that. I'll report in on Monday.
I thought the QBs were live already?
From what's been reported, both scrimmages featured live QB's.
The QBs are alive, except for Chris Todd ... he died in the LSU game last year.
Luv - We sometimes make it for the Iron Bowl.
Will - I appreciate the beer and the cooler seat.
I don't even want to think about the LSU game last year.
or the one the year before. I always made fun of people who cried at football games. We were there and when that pass was intercepted in the endzone, I cried.
The year before is the one that really made me sick (LSU that is).
That one either. I hate LSU.
I hate LSU too. Not as much as I hate Bama, though.
ahhhh a little hottie hate flowing
I like it.
I don't hate any team remotely as much as I do Bama...except maybe the yankees.
As Clayton Bigsbee would say, "If you have hate in your heart, let it out."
I need some sports radio suggestions. Who can I listen to online?
Just so you all know, I'm really not as hateful as I currently seem. I'm just hungry and it aggitates me, therefore, I'm going to go eat. Later Hotties!
Sorry, Monica. I can't help you.
the only one I know is the Roundtable, Mon. I know you don't want to listen to that though.
What are you going to eat, Prowler?
Prowler I was just reading your Facebook to see where you live. How did you become such a Sox fan? And I have a huge office supply fetish. You should hook me up!
Whatever I can find at home. Probably something simple like a sandwich and chips. Going to PC beach tomorrow so thought I'd save a little money.
lunch break
Tar Heel....how do we stay anon when most are on facebook?
I'd meet if I didn't have to go a wedding....
I grew up a Braves fan, but I got tired of them always trading away my favorite players. I started following the Red Sox around '94 because I liked several players on their team and kept up with them ever since...plus, I don't like the Yankees.
That's the kind of customers I want...one's with fetishes that will have them coming back for more!
Ok, off to lunch now. For real this time. Peace, Hotties!
Office supply fetish??
big time
What the heck is an office supply fetish?
I love office supplies. That's all.
Luv..
You ask the best questions.
ehyou, Monica calls me the Hottie Sociologist because I'm always asking questions.
Monica, I have to....
Why?
Office supplies in general are so-so. A good-writing pen does give me a thorough sense of satisfaction though.
It would take many couch-sessions to answer that question.
I'm not sure why. Maybe it's my need to bring order to a chaotic world? I love organizational tools, too. I just LOVE them. I could sit and look at a those big office supply catalogs in our office for Hours.
)
I'm a freak. I know.
If you hadn't beat me to it, I was going to say...FREAK!
So, what do you do in a place like Oraganized Living?
btw, that should have been beaten not beat.
I've never been in Organizational Living. I can't type what my response would be. That's too salacious for even, Jay G.
I don't mind you calling me a freak. I embrace my inner freak.
email it to me!!
done
Oh, Monica,
I knew we were kindred spirits. I LOVE office supplies and organizational "stuff". My husband accuses me of organizing my organizing. I hated it when I could no longer buy my kids school supplies!
Luv - You asked for it. ;-)
Cincy - I thought about having kids JUST so I could buy school supplies. :-)
Some husbands bring home flowers. Greg will bring home new, fancy pens and other treats. IT'S SO HAWT.
okay, I don't have a fetish but everytime I go to Atlanta, I have to go to the Container Store and I always buy something.
I feel like I just stepped into a Beauty Salon.
Gun show will be there Sat Mon...
I mean all this girl talk, beauty salon would not help me.
Gun show where.....?
How can you guys just stop at 198?
New page.
