Looking ahead to A-Day, Part I

Hey everyone. So we're coming up on the most anticipated Auburn A-Day in a decade. There will be plenty of side stories worthy of regard as things unfold Saturday.

You wanna know which player-related tangents I find most appealing? Sure you do.
  • Quarterbacks: That's the story at this point. To put an even tighter focus on it, I want to know if Neil Caudle is as bad as Tony Franklin reported. I sense that his skill set -- specifically his cleaner throwing mechanics -- eventually may lead him to the starting lineup.

  • Onterio McCalebb: As I said on the Gridiron Breakdown earlier this week, McCalebb has a singularity of purpose I haven't seen at Auburn since Rudi Johnson. Can McCalebb provide the same kind of boost Johnson made during the 2000 season? Probably not, but we'll be able to see Saturday if McCalebb is capable of immediate contribution.

  • Mike Slade: Can he play? He looked pretty good the one time I noticed him playing in 2008 ... at Ole Miss.

  • Justin Albert: You looking for a sleeper in your Auburn Fantasy Football draft? His walk-on status will keep the bidding low, but it's clear offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn believes in Albert. The former Prattville tailback will have a (previously unforseen) chance to make a mark in 2009 ... provided that trust remains steadfast through the summer. Why is Malzahn smitten? Saturday could provide some answers.

  • Defensive front freelancing: DT Mike Blanc indicated last week that assistant coach Tracy Rocker wants his players "doing what they do best." Blanc, a noted "bull" rusher, said he's been given the green light to use that technique as needed. Will Rocker's relaxed approach to conformity of technique result in better production?

If you read the pre-college hoopla from the recruiting services, Caudle sounded like a legit prospect who just had some unfortunate injury luck. At this point I don't trust Tony Franklin's evaluation of anything other than his own willingness to run the zone-read in ill-advised situations.

Morning Hotties - I've missed the HABOTN while I've been away. Some points:
1 - I can't make A-Day but it is on CSS (supposedly) around here so I hope to be watching.

2 - I would really like to know how J-Z liked the "midget wrestling" at his local watering hole last week.

3 - I'm absolutely FED UP with Comcast and am giving consideration to Satellite. I'd appreciate any commentary you folks can provide me on that front. Feel free to check my profile and shoot me an email if you have some good information.

My only point on the old coaching staff was how their mistakes will affect the new staff. It's hard to discuss players, depth etc. without mentioning how Chizik and Co are not exactly inheriting a full roster of players. I thought Tuberville deserved the same treatment(even moreso) when he followed Bowden. I just want the Chizik staff to be given a fair chance to show what they can do with a few position upgrades.

Michael ...

I would offer that saving his job after 2003 was his "second chance," which offers a re-opening of the "be careful about playing two BCS teams at the beginning of the season" discussion.

What happened after this season and how it happened is inconsequential to me.

What I saw was a "tired old coach" who didn't convey the energy of someone up to the task of what was ahead. He looked like Sonny Smith did 20 years ago in hoops. It was just time.

9:58 AM

Tim Jessie, RB, Opp, Alabama, 1982 (redshirt) -- through 1986. A wonderful role-playing RB behind Bo Jackson, Lionel James, and Brent Fullwood.

One of his roles was to be the RB on the pitch to the RB/reverse to the receiver play that we used to great success in the mid-1980s, most famously to Lawyer Tillman in the 1986 win over UAT.

I'll stand by this, the worst QB that I can recall us having was Pat Washington. The 84 and 85 teams should have been much better, but he wasn't a threat to do anything so we were left with disappointment both years.

Washington was awful, Burger played some in 85 and was a little bit better, but any decent QB play in 84 and 85 and we would have been able to live up to the pre-season hype.

Nobody really knew how good Randy Campbell was at running that offense until he was gone.

10:21 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

So, who was our starting QB in '72 post Sully?

I think it was Randy Wall in '73; was he also QB in '72?

Wade Whatley was Gator Bowl MVP in '72 because starter was injured

Phil came along at end of '73 and was full time starter in '74, his soph yr.

As an example of the great firepower of the Amazins' offense, Whatley was Gator Bowl MVP with these stats:
passing 3-6-0, 42 yards
rushing 13 for 20 yards

Blogger Prowler said...

That one either. I hate LSU.

12:12 PM

I hate LSU too. Not as much as I hate Bama, though.

ahhhh a little hottie hate flowing

I like it.

12:14 PM
Blogger Prowler said...

I don't hate any team remotely as much as I do Bama...except maybe the yankees.

As Clayton Bigsbee would say, "If you have hate in your heart, let it out."

I need some sports radio suggestions. Who can I listen to online?

Blogger Prowler said...

Just so you all know, I'm really not as hateful as I currently seem. I'm just hungry and it aggitates me, therefore, I'm going to go eat. Later Hotties!

Sorry, Monica. I can't help you.

12:22 PM

the only one I know is the Roundtable, Mon. I know you don't want to listen to that though.

12:24 PM
Blogger Monica said...

What are you going to eat, Prowler?

12:25 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Prowler I was just reading your Facebook to see where you live. How did you become such a Sox fan? And I have a huge office supply fetish. You should hook me up!

12:28 PM
Blogger Prowler said...

Whatever I can find at home. Probably something simple like a sandwich and chips. Going to PC beach tomorrow so thought I'd save a little money.

Tar Heel....how do we stay anon when most are on facebook?
I'd meet if I didn't have to go a wedding....

I grew up a Braves fan, but I got tired of them always trading away my favorite players. I started following the Red Sox around '94 because I liked several players on their team and kept up with them ever since...plus, I don't like the Yankees.

12:30 PM
Blogger Prowler said...

That's the kind of customers I want...one's with fetishes that will have them coming back for more!

Ok, off to lunch now. For real this time. Peace, Hotties!

Monica, I have to....

Why?

12:44 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

Office supplies in general are so-so. A good-writing pen does give me a thorough sense of satisfaction though.

12:44 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

It would take many couch-sessions to answer that question.

12:46 PM
Blogger Monica said...

I'm not sure why. Maybe it's my need to bring order to a chaotic world? I love organizational tools, too. I just LOVE them. I could sit and look at a those big office supply catalogs in our office for Hours.

I'm a freak. I know.

I've never been in Organizational Living. I can't type what my response would be. That's too salacious for even, Jay G.

I don't mind you calling me a freak. I embrace my inner freak.

Oh, Monica,
I knew we were kindred spirits. I LOVE office supplies and organizational "stuff". My husband accuses me of organizing my organizing. I hated it when I could no longer buy my kids school supplies!

12:59 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Luv - You asked for it. ;-)

Cincy - I thought about having kids JUST so I could buy school supplies. :-)
Some husbands bring home flowers. Greg will bring home new, fancy pens and other treats. IT'S SO HAWT.
