Post No. 1,173
Hey everyone. A few players were made available prior to the Tigers' Tuesday evening practice. The theme was quarterbacks. I'm sure you're happy to hear that.
Let's just get to it:
- It's clear to me that Kodi Burns believes he has accomplished enough to be named the team's top quarterback. Though he remains diplomatic with his answers about the so-called quarterback race, Burns is brimming with confidence these days.
11Being a leader is what I'm doing best," he said Tuesday. ``When I walk out there on the field, the offensive guys look me in the face and know we can get it done." - Burns on the plusses of having a clear No. 1 guy during the summer: ``The advantage is the extra work. If you have one guy established, you're going to be that guy. The No. 1s will go with the No. 1s all the time. It would be a lot easier if you have one guy to get your timing and your cohesiveness down."
- I've never seen a quarterback pooped on more than Neil Caudle in 2008. His offensive coordinator sold him out. Caudle never had a shot. When the team's fortunes soured in October, Auburn coaches considered activating Barrett Trotter, then a true freshman, rather than Caudle. Nevermind that Caudle was in his third college season.
``I know we were a little bit desperate, but it was kind of disheartening for that to happen," Caudle said Tuesday. ``I think it all worked out in the end. This is a new year." - The three healthy scholarship quarterbacks (Burns, Caudle, Trotter) split reps evenly during Saturday's scrimmage.
- Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn says he's grading each quarterback's performance on a daily basis. Those grades apparently are not being shared with the players.
Trotter on his Saturday scrimmage grade: ``Couldn't tell you."
Trotter on if he finds that annoying: ``You'd like to know. At the same time, either way, you know, you're going to keep working hard and doing what you're going to do. Hopefully it wouldn't affect that much of my work ethic. I'm going to work hard either way."

world domination
That's remarkably fast, Sam.
Go sam go
Has Kodi's confidence increased as quickly? He was not so confident last year.
Has he looked that impressive???
Burns thinks some mechanical tweaks have made him a significantly more accurate passer during the past week.
We shall see. If you recall, he was awesome during the final two weeks of spring ball last year.
I am going to have to get to ADAY somehow and see for myself.
I read an article somewhere that said Neil Caudle was doing very well. I am not sure if he has a shot though. He has had surgery on both of his knees.
My guess is that by the end of the spring the QB race will be narrowed to Kodi and Caudle. I doubt Rollison will be in the mix as a possible starter when he arrives, although I bet he will be in the top 3 on the depth chart.
For now, I think you have to assume Kodi is the starter, but I could easily see Caudle becoming the guy.
DL- I will be at A-Day. Will you be wearing clothes?
I see no way Tyrik Rollison makes the depth chart.
Zero point zero.
There is no need for him to. Let him take the Redshirt, learn the playbook and develop, then he can compete the following spring.
i have said it a hundred times, that i would be pretty shocked if Kodi isn't your game 1 starter
I sure hope the new coaches can make a difference.
I am always leery when it comes to Spring talk.
Not sure we have a D1 QB in the crowd
Step 1: Qualify
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Depth Chart
I love redshirting QBs, but Rollison is very high profile. It wouldn't surprise me if he was the number 2 or 3 guy. Number 3 would probably be more likely. The question has to be how good is Trotter? He wasn't nearly as highly touted as Burns, Caudle, or Rollison.
I think we have a D1 QB there somewhere... I'm not sure we have had a D1 QB coach in the past couple of years though.
I can't remember the last time we had a D1 WR coach...
Jay, do you have a read on how the coaches like Trotter? Since he is getting a third of the reps, my assumption is they see potential or that they aren't happy with Burns and Caudle.
Borges was a good QB coach. I suspect that he had the same concerns with Kodi as Franklin did. I think it was part of his downfall.
It has been awhile since we haf outstanding WR 2004 comes to mind.
I just hope one of these guys can learn the plays and execute them well enough to win.
haf??? try had.
digger, even the 2004 receivers were late living up to their potential. Needless to say, I wasn't impressed with Knox as a receivers coach.
A little cockiness may be a good thing in a football player. I'm not sure Burns has any reason to feel that way though.
He's a legend in his own mind.
Not sure if Knox helped or not but that whole group could get open and CATCH (few drops) the ball.
NoVa I wonder the same thing he needs to pony up and do something besides talk.
Well, my thinking on the quarterbacks has changed during the past week.
I no longer think Todd is going to have a real shot -- repaired arm or not. He'll just be too far behind.
So it's down to the Big Three.
The sense I get is this:
Burns
Trotter
Caudle
Again, that's just my sense.
Burns isn't cocky at all.
He's a very bright, calm kid.
In that order? Caudle 3rd string?
Jay, there has to be alot of behind the scenes talk among you fellow writers about Ua at this point?
This comment has been removed by the author.
That was my impression from the quote. Of course, it might have sounded different in person. We need a QB to step and if he's the one that does it, more power to him.
I agree on Todd. I doubt he could catch up.
Maybe I am remembering incorrectly, but it seems the AU QB play started going downhill when Kenny Irons was injured early in the 06 season. Cox had looked like a future star in the 05 season, but after KI was injured, the offense struggled even though the record didn't really reflect that. Maybe it has been because the passing game has struggled so badly, but the AU rushing game has been a shadow of what it used to be, especially in the SEC games. I'm really curious to see what Malzahn can do with the talent he has inherited.
Trotter's older brother is in law school with my son-in-law. He is convinced when fall rolls around that Barrett will be the starter. Maybe just family loyalty...
JGT...interesting that you think Caudle got a raw deal last year. Based on what was reported in last year spring practices and what I saw in the A-day game, Caudle couldn't see the field well, seemed to lock on to one receiver and threw an inordinate amount of INTS. The terrible situation for Caudle is that due to injuries, he hasn't been in the field for many years. There is no substitute for real game action.
B/c Caudle has stayed with the team and presumably worked hard, I hope he gets every chance.
Caudle's passing skills have looked much more fluid than Burns'. Burns has playmaking skills that cause you to want him on the field. My guess is that no one will earn it outright in the spring. It seems that if a #1 is picked at the end of spring, it's b/c the other faltered. It also seems that these coaches aren't going to share a lot of details...'bout time for that.
I agree with Hoopie, every scrimmage I saw he threw at least one INT, usually more. With that said I hope he puts it all together.
It has to be Burns, he has all advantages; speed, experience, strong arm...
Dude ... some chic named auwench is plagarizing you over on Rivals. Wouldn't have been a big deal if she had credited you, but she didn't.
So Burns, who many here and elsewhere felt had no chance to ever be a successful starter in the SEC after his performance last season, may now be the number 1.
This begs the question...has he improved THAT much, or are we that desperate?
excellent question ... I am not sure I really want to know the answer.
Phred....defend JGT.....go call them out on it.
Thanks for all the work and info Jay. I've enjoyed all the coverage and video's.
My other question is what happens when the lights of JHS come on and Burns faces the heat. Will he maintain his mechanical upgrades or will he resort to what is most natural....
Inquiring minds want to know, and so do I.
Harrison,
You will know my by the rice paper speedo...
phred = auburnmath101?
Kodi's passing fundamentals seem to break down during the game. His shoulder turn/footwork/wrist action looks differently coordinated on every pass.....kinda like my golf swing.
and so I have been discovered. it's true ... I was originally auburnmath101.
wes- I'm very affraid that you don't improve mechanics as bad as Burn's in 8 practices or 15 for that matter. Burn's will probably be the man, but he has a long long way to go in my opinion.
BTW I'm posting while giving an exam, and the topic is motivation. Are there any points or accolades awarded for such postings which might motivate me to do so more often?
What ever happened to Aumath101? Never could agree with him.
I REALLY hope todd is #3 and the keep the redshirt on Ty-rol
huh?
he was my alterego, but I let him die because I was afraid he was going to get his A whooped.
Hoopie- I hope your swing is not like Barkley's. Though I am enjoying "The Haney Project".
Wes, points are awarded for posting while taking exams, not giving them.
right :)
Ty-rol needs a year under Yox more than anything.
If I remember correctly, 101 drove Crudup nuts....Phred you wouldn't do that would you?
I didn't always agree with Will, but respected his posts/opinion.
I am sorry Neil got pooped on....I hate getting pooped on. It sounds like Neil has the same character as Jason C.
It wouldn't surprise me for Caudle to end up number 1. Todd probably has a shot if his arm is healed, but I don't really see that happening. My guess is that he always has trouble with it. I don't think Trotter is the guy. As for Burns, his inconsistency bothers me. In a couple of games last season I thought he was starting to get it. Georgia, Arkansas, and Ole Miss come to mind, although the only complete game was probably Ole Miss. Inconsistency goes write along with throwing motion. If you aren't consistent with the motion and footwork, you get inconsistent results.
Eddie, Back in the day, I was an 8 h/cap even with a poor short game. Due to back problems, I haven't picked up the sticks in 3 years, so the swing has to now be bad.
Even with a bad back, my swing would nevah be a uuuuugly as ol' chuck's.
Lemme go deal with auwench.
Hoopie- That sucks. I would hate to not be able to do something I enjoy due to physical problems.
WEG....pooped on is ruff. Better to be pooped off than pooped on.
cordless_drill= Jay G Tate?
OK. Handled.
Eddie....After dropping golf, I started bass fishing and have really reconnected with my younger brother (a Bammer..sigh). I don't miss golf nearly as much as expected.
One day I'll be back.
Ut Ohh, I think someone got on Jay's bad side. Did I hear a can of whoop butt pop open?
Hoopie ... I did used to do that just to entertain myself. But it got to the point where I didn't even like auburnmath101, so I killed him.
JGT ... I let it be known.
Smack 'em Jay.
Eddie.. Is the construction bidness down in Atl doing any better?
Yea, I considered start the warmest Auburn blog on the net, but if I copied Jay's stuff, I was afraid he would do the beat down.
jay in with the wenches!
Y'all like the pic on my rivals.com profile?
Also in the "about me" box:
"I hate Jay G. Tate. He's terrible."
I now know how to spell Plagiarism. Thanks G money. Nice avatar by the way.
THTjr and I will probably make the 1000 mile trip for A-Day. I'm hoping for record cold temps in the hopes it will entice DL to put a robe over his rice paper speedo.
Hoopie- Business is actually starting to pick up just a little bit. We are starting more jobs to bid on lately. I believe / hope that we are at the bottom of the curve. My company has been very fortunate through most of this mess.
Jay- I like the distorted picture of yourself. Classic.
Wish I could see A-Day. Give me the PPV opportunity and I am virtually there.
The stock market has been turning to pooh again over the last few days. Don't give up the ship, but stand near the lifeboats.
I'm already in the life boat, Steve.
cordless_drill?
PMarsh was on Sensi's show tonight and said he talked to Tyrik's coach in December and he was puzzled by the qualifying questions and says there's no doubt he will qualify.
Sorry to hear that Jay, but this recession has been hard on everyone. I have been fortunate so far, but you never can tell.
Steve- I started on a cruise ship and I'm now down to a raft made of plastic bottles used and holding on for dear life with a hurricane approaching.
That is good to hear, Monica. That kid needs to get on campus as soon as possible. I hope he is redshirted and is groomed to be the starter in a couple of seasons.
You guys would have loved it
Monica was wooopen the responder on Internetblpg radio like wooopen a rented mule.
I almost fell out of my chair.
I'm going home to where I have no TV an no internet. Lean and mean these days. See you boys and girls later. Dear Leader ... I'm glad your rocket didn't veer off course.
I was doing pretty good until recently. A family emergency caused me to sell off most of my stock and spend most of my cash. I now hide in my apartment and try to rebuild my savings.
What did I do?? Whattchoo tawlkin bout, Digger?
No TV and no internet? Isn't that the definition of hell?
Just talking Mon wasn't sure it was you until you put on those pink boxing gloves.
LOL well, my name in there is Monica - You should have said hello.
The best passer will win the QB job. All of these guys can run, the question is who can pass. I keep hearing the excuse that Burns has never had the advantage of a TRUE QB coach. At least Burns had the coaching that was avalible..Caudle has been looked over and hurt the whole time. Seeing the field is alot easier to cure that correcting mechanical issues. I think Caudle wins.
Auburn's most effective passer next year = Mario Fannin.
You know me and this puter. I tried to sign in so I could talk and for some reason I couldn't get it to work.
Hmmm, Caudle might have a better shot now, but running is required in this offense and both of his knees have had surgery in the past. The emphasis the coaches have placed on running are probably what gives Kodi, and to some degree Trotter, the edge.
Over the past few years I've watched my daughter and her friends struggle leaving home and acclimating to college. This is all without trying to play CFB. Rarely does an individual show up in June, learn a system and start/succeed as a true freshman QB in the SEC.
And I don't really think it will be the best passer or runner that becomes the starter. It will likely be the best decision maker.
Kodi Burns will be the starter. I just don't believe you can expect big things with this team next year. Just improvement from last year.
If Rollison is not redshirted, the best I can see is him as a backup that gets a little experience. I seriously doubt he would get consideration as the starter unless the coaches really don't like any of the other QBs, which I don't think is the case. More than likely Rollison will be redshirted.
I agree the qB that can make the reads and execute all of the offense will be the starter. If the QB has to do it all run, pass and catch it we are in trouble.
I wouldn't mind Burns as the starter at all. I just think his decision making will have to be much improved.
Part of what I think happened the last few seasons is that Tuberville wanted Kodi to be the starter. I think Borges and Franklin recognized that Kodi wasn't ready.
I'm with Jay G on Todd ... never felt he was a part of the answer for 2009 ... bad arm, not practicing, too much time to make up. I hope he wasn't in the picture because it meant the others were dreadful.
My guess has been that Kodi and one other would start off as the primary QBs, and one would emerge from that. My thought going in was Trotter, but Caudle has been the subject of more chatter that I've been hearing. Who knows?
I'm just excited that we're getting closer.
It pains me to say this, but I agree with Steve. First time for everything, I guess. All the athletic ability in the world can't cure a 50 cent head. (I think I stole part of that from Bull Durham.) Where's Nuke LaLoosh when you need him.
Todd was the best QB we had last season. I wish he could get healthy because I like his potential, but I seriously doubt that will happen.
Hoopie ...
I'm going to guess that your daughter is a better decision maker than some of the quarterbacks we had last year. :)
Can she throw the deep ball?
By the way, I was also a big Cox fan.
Guru.....I had very good passing skills..in practice. I had 20/10 vision, yet in a scrimmage the downfield became a blur with all of the movement. I played DE/TE.
When I see our current QBs, Daniel Cobb comes to mind. He was close to being a QB but wasn't quite there.
Digger - You have to set up an account on Blogradio before you can chat in the discussion. Maybe you can do that before the next show.
Sensi if you're here I have a question. Holla!!!!
I'm hoping Kodi is Jason switching from 2001 to 2002.
I'm hoping Caudle is Ben Leard from 1998 to the healthy parts of 1999 and 2000.
I'm hoping Trotter is Brandon Cox in 2004.
Daughter is 5'-8" and was on the state champion competition cheerleading team. This entails twists, flips, throws and dance.
Throwing skills...she had no interest ....despite my.....umm....encouragement.
I thought Franklin figured out what was wrong with Kodi last year. Remember him talking to his high school coach about foot work. I hope I am wrong but he seems to have to many mechanical problems to be a great passer.
Mon which one of the two guys is Sensi?
He wasn't the one typing on the blog was he?
Braves win 4 0 against the Philly's
Jason was the best example of the ideal QB in terms of size, height, and speed. He could run better than most think, was around 6'5", and just had it all. His problem was that we played him too early in his career, but I don't see that we had much of a choice.
Jamie Moyer, whose age in years is greater than the MPH of his pitches, took the loss for the Phils.
Jet, that would be a great QB problem to have.....wait...that sounds too much like a quote from last year.
On a personal note...the fan controversy surrounding 3 great QB options would be more than I could handle.
Well, if we hear anything about a two QB system, I will jump off the bandwagon quick. I hope we see a clear starter and a backup that gets in for one or two drives a game.
Look at coaching changes and QBs.
Stan White struggled until Terry Bowden arrived.
Ben Leard stunk until Mazzone got him straightened out.
Jason Campbell was raw until Petrino started to refine him.
Campbell regressed under Farmer Fran until Borges polished him.
Franklin was committed to Todd.
Generally, our recent history shows that a change in QB coaches can be a positive benefit for a QB on the roster. Will it be Kodi? Neil? Barrett?
But I have faith in Gus Malzahn's ability to make a difference in one of our QBs.
We're not going to win the West, but I believe we'll be better.
Digger - Yes, Sensi was the one typing.
I think it is possible that we contend for the west, but it isn't likely. I said this before last season too. A championship team usually has an experienced QB and a solid defense. We were missing the QB last season, along with a crap load of receivers.
I remember Pat Dye has the 3 quarterbacks thing going on in the mid 80s. I think it was Trotman, Washington, and Thomas if I am not mistaken. It all fell apart in the Tennessee game and he scrapped the idea.
It was Pat Washington, Jeff Burger and Bobby Walden.
Washington quarterbacked the rest of the way.
Jet...I remember Franklin harping on WR and QB fundamentals last spring and was encouraged just hearing the acknowledgement.....silly me.
That being said: It does seem that CGM and CTT will cause significant improvement.
The 1979 combo was the Charlies -- Trotman and Thomas.
Mmmm....caramel cake.
Different kids react to different stimuli -- remember, we're in the A.D.D. generation.
(That's Attention Deficit Disorder, not Automatic Death Disease -- "That'll move the chains!")
If the kids are clicking with the new coaches (evidence suggests they are) and the coaching is competent (again, evidence suggests they are), improvement should follow.
We are all enamored with the new Offense but we all know you win championships with defense. It just seems like forever since we have had any offense.Personally I can't wait to see Chiz and ROOFS' Defense. If I remember correctly Roof likes to blitz a lot. Me like blitz.
you're on fire tonight, Jet
That's what happens when Mrs. Jet hogs the laptop doing "work stuff" and I've been left alone with my thoughts.
I'm not enamored with the new offense as I have not seen the new offense.
Steve...coaching change results are tuff to predict for the coaches first season. Ask the Bammers.
We need OL.
Monica,
That's not true. You've been ogling Gus -- even his skinny calves -- for weeks. You were FB friends with Kristi within 15 minutes of the announcement of his hiring.
I don't care if you've got pink boxing gloves, I'm saying you're enamored. That's right. I said it.
Hoopie - When are we going fishing with your pal again?
My guess is that JayG has seen more than I have so if he thinks KB is the man, then I go with him. I thought Todd would probably start, if healthy and KB or Trotter take over real quick. Sounds like it is all KB for now.
I suspect if he has some good receviers, a lot of pressure will be off of him.
I'm not enamored with Gus.
I'm in lust with Gus.
I'll be enamored with his offense when I see if it works with our guys.
And I don't need any kind of gloves to take care of you. ;-)
I think too many are taking the in season changes last year too lightly. With a focused group of coaches, I still think AU wins 9 games. The '09 team will look more like the '07 team or better. IMO. Unless injuries take a toll.
Bring it, Pinky.
Attn: DMIller ... some caller on SportsCall? (Bill Cameron's show) was trying to unload Wednesday practice round tickets. Jack@$$.
Pinky???? HAHAHAHA
You're precious, Jet.
If playmakers are there in '09. the pressure on the QB will be less. He will not have ot make as many plays. I remember a quote from JGT last year that "KB trust one person on the field, that is KB." Hopefully he wil lnot have that problem this year. If the WR's are in their spot for timing routes and RB's catch the screens out of the backfield, KB just has to get them the ball. Remember, Gus throws it downfield some, but a lot are just short passes and the playmaker does the rest.
JZ - Stop bringing your yummy food messages to this board! grrrrrrr
MOnica-I saw the photo of Gus's calves. Let's just say I hope he doesn't step in a coke bottle as he leaves the field.
Last spring game the defense was limited to basic schemes and many folks became enamored with the offense.
Just found out that Hoopette has planned important familial events that will keep me away this year. Sure hope Comcast (CSS)replays the game again this year.
I know! WTC - They such straw legs! And since I'm perfection I should accept any less, BUT for Gus I make an exception.
Hoopie if you think ignoring me is going to keep me away from your fishing trip you've got another think coming!
Hoopie ...
You better acknowledge Monica. She's a smart, resourceful girl. She can do anything -- except obey a restraining order.
Mon..My inlaws live on a trophy bass lake in Hattiesburg, Ms. Due to the river flooding in L.A., 2 AU buddies and I switched our fishing trip this past weekend to the inlaws place. We caught around 50 bass, including 2-8 pounders. The inlaws were great hosts.
Mon..your aura is too great to ignore. I just that I type slow. it's the reason I don't do the campfires.
The inlaws are the great hosts and welcome all AU folks. We'll need to plan the trip soon...So. Miss is miserable from Mid-May until October.
ahh it's already passed? uh huh...
Nicely played, Master Hoopie.
UConn women pummel Louisville.
39-0. 6th title, 3rd unbeaten season.
It was be so much nice if everyone would say my aura was too great to ignore instead of calling me a big mouth. Hoopie is a smart, kind man.
nice = nicer
Mon's chameleonesqe talents are formidable. She can transition from Elegant to Sassy to Scary in 3posts .....and then start all over.
She spins us like a top.
The poor woman who was the chair of the women's selection committee trying to present UConn with the trophy was pitiful, stammering all the way through, then unleashing this beaut ...
"The University of UConn."
Hoop ...
Oh, so true.
Department of Redundancy Department
JGT's observations are priceless. Not to take away from them, but Tony Barnhart is schedued to report on AU on Friday. Although Barnhart doesn't have the inside view like JGT, he has the benefit of visiting and comparing numerous schools during Spring. It will be interesting to read his take on AU.
Heard through the grapevine that Ted Roof was a real ballbuster. JG, have you had that perception?
Burns would have to have several impressive games before I had confidence in him. The passing proficiency, I have just not seen it.
Hoopie ...
In re Barnhart, agreed. He's a pro. A gentleman. His perspective of SEC football is the one I value the most.
I've been following Barnhart too Hoopie. It's good to get an outside perspective on things.
If the outside perspective is not that Auburn is awesome, then it is obviously wrong.
I hate Bama.
I played a lot of baseball and it really hindered learning a golf swing.....it took a lot of lessons to unlearn bad habits, etc.
Kodi seems to have learned a lot of bad habits prior to getting "lessons".
Oh, that is SOOO my epitaph!
JGT, are you singing and dancing that UConn beat the UofL women?
is there any chance todd gets a 6th year because of injury if he misses 2009? i'm not saying i necessarily want him playing anytime soon, but i'll take all the QBs we can get for the next few years until someone separates themselves from the pack. i don't care what name or number is on the jersey if they can throw TDs to the right team. always remember, any of these guys are an injury away from being the starter whether we want that particular guy or not. i feel better about the competency of the offensive coaching than at any point in my lifetime of AU fandom. i'm just hoping they have enough base talent to reach 9-10-11 wins by year two and put AU on the national scene again. i never thought the previous staff fully reaped the recruiting benefits the 2004 season set them up for. if anything they got lazy going against shula and let UF & UT & LSU steal a few gems from the state of alabama.
Talk about chalk ...
UNC men, UConn women.
Guess that means Tiger wins the Masters.
Well, good to see Kodi has been fixed. Can't wait for the fall!
i think we go undefeated. really. i'm not drinking.
Jay G. If you and wife liked Real Wives of NYC you have GOT to watch Real of New Jersey. These girls put the bitch in bitchy! They are a HOOT!
here is something that proves to me the SEC west is where it's at: from 2006-2008 the fightin' tebows and their two Bull Chip Series trophies are 14-1 against the east and 7-4 against the west.
i just wish the SEC would go round robin w/ champ game and foresake the bcs for the fake title it is. then i wouldn't feel so bad about scheduling furman.
Anybody for a nightcap?
i just watched pmarsh's neil caudle video..jg, i didn't realize you actually told caudle he got "pooped on". that made me laugh
If kodi's mechanics still aren't right, how can he get the offense down and make the throws. Im still not sure about it, last week he was throwing screen passes at the knees???
Justin Albert had a touchdown today
Obviously I haven't seen enough to know. Just my opinion, right or wrong.
Good article from the Bleacher Report:
3 Reasons to Believe in Auburn Football
AUBigCat, that article mentions something I hadn't considered. Our success with the Franklin Experience in the chicken bowl was before he had a chance to turn our offensive linemen into sissys. That is certainly something to think about.
How much should i pay Michael Dyer to come to Auburn?
http://www.michaeldyer5.com/Home.html
watch his highlight and tell my you wouldnt break laws to get this kid lol
Good morning and Happy Hump Day, Hotties.
I sure would love to know how Jay G "handled" auwench!
I have no guess on who the starting QB will be. I don't care who it is. I just want him to get the job done and do it well.
I like Jeff Mclaney. He is one smart man.
jhag- Ask Bama what the going rate is. They are the ones that set the price.
"I'm hoping Caudle is Ben Leard from 1998 to the healthy parts of 1999 and 2000."
Jet, Ben Leard was awful in 1998.
A Good Morning to all!!
I bet Gus can tell just by watching them a little who the best QB option is. He just ain't saying. I would love to know what goes on in his head.
Chip, if Todd gets a 6th year, that will complete the full comparison to Daniel Cobb.
jhag said...

jhag, I want him! Do whatever you have to do...
RK ...
That's what I am saying ... that he transitions from the Bad Ben to the Good Ben.
Gotcha, I read that is you hope Caudle is the healthy Leard from 98 and 99.
Leard in 98 was awful. I remember he threw an interception vs Virgina and walked to the sidelines smiling and at that point I wanted him dead.
Morning gang, happy hump day to you all. It's weird starting the work week on a Wednesday but better than on a Monday.
Re: Quarterbacks, I think it will ultimately be Burns under center. If he was able to tweak a couple of things with some fundamentals etc, I could see how he would be a much improved passer.
So I got my personal invite from Coach Chizik to attend A-Day!
Dear Auburn Family,
It's great to be an Auburn Tiger!
Spring practice is under way, and excitement is building for Auburn Football.
The effort and intensity our players have shown has been outstanding as we strive to improve each and every day.
Our goal is to build a strong foundation for Auburn Football. That starts with recruiting for the future, but it certainly doesn't end there.
We will insist on outstanding effort and doing all the little things right this spring, throughout summer workouts and every day of the upcoming season.
We've got a long way to go to reach the goals we all share, but I can assure you that we will not be outworked. We will be tough, and we will be physical.
Our student-athletes and staff are working hard, and we are all pulling in the same direction. It is exciting for our staff and for me to be a part of something special here at Auburn.
Finally, I want to personally invite you to show your support for these young men on A-Day, which is set for Saturday, April 18, at 1 p.m.
We've brought back an old tradition with an autograph session that will follow the game on Pat Dye Field, and other new activities being planned will enhance the A-Day experience for you and your family.
I hope to see you in Auburn.
War Eagle!
Head Coach Gene Chizik
Good morning all!! What did auwench do to deserve handling? I didn't see anything or did I miss something?
Nice to also see a lot of football discussions.
RK ...
I remember where I was that night ... that was one of the most putrid performances in AU history.
My thought was why hadn't we gotten him some playing time in 1997 in some of the blowout games.
Why is it that I only remember the good games?
We didn't even play Bama last year, did we?
I remember heading into 1998 that I felt we weren't going to be that good.
Dameyune Craig had been 99% of our offense the year before. We had lost Ricky Neal and Takeo Spikes from the D. All we had coming back on offense was Karsten Bailey.
Everyone was hyped up about Demontray Carter as the starting RB and I just didn't think the games against Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Clemson that he played in 1997 to burn his redshirt had shown that much promise.
I remember one of the polls had us ranked at #25 to start the season and I knew that was wishful thinking.
That being said, I never expected the disaster of 3-8, but at least it got rid of Bowden.
Were the Bowden years really that bad? I wasn't around as an AU fan then so I don't really know.
RK- The Ben smiling thing caused a big rift on the team and was part of the big downfall that year. Personally, knowing Ben fairly well, that was just his outlet. I promise you that he was as completely pissed and disappointed as any fan was with his performance.
Morning Hot Ones!
Jhag I dont know about Michael Dyer. I mean his YPG avg dropped from 193 in 2007 to 181 in 2008. And his yards dropped from 2700+ in 2007 to around 2000 in 08. I think i need more consistency in our backfield! :) At 5'9 202lbs running a 4.3/40, that's like trying to catch a cannon ball after it's been fired! Can we get a booster to buy him an Escalade?
Seanzie,
The Bowden years got off to a great start going 11-0 with the talent that was left over from Dye. That was followed up by a 9-1-1 year where they blew a big lead vs UGA that ended in a tie and lost a game where they were uninspired vs Bama.
What followed were two 8-4 years where there was turmoil on the team, lots of infighting and a shift in offensive philosophy.
Stephen Davis who lead the SEC in rushing in 1994 came back in 1995 and had his carries cut by 5-10 per game. He still got over 1,000 yards but the point was being made that Bowden wanted more scat backs.
In 1995 we played mostly freshmen on D and struggled. Bowden wasn't a strong recruiter and it seemed all the RB's and DB's were around Bowden's height.
We went 10-3 in 1997 and lost the SEC title game to UT by 2 points, but suffered a 20-0 loss at home to Miss State that pretty much ended any faith people had in Bowden. If not for Daymeune Craig in 96 and 97 we wouldn't have won much of anything.
When Bowden left, he didn't leave much behind for Tuberville to play with.
As I recall the two years of Bowden/Oliver were pretty much a wash. I personally have stricken them from my memory.
Eddie,
Leard played with a lot more emotion after that. I remember 2000 vs UGA he made a bad throw and got knocked down on the same play and just started beating the ground because of his mistake...that's the passion I want to see out of a guy who goofed up.
I wonder if the QB decision ever gets easy for Malzahn? He struggled with it at Arkansas, toyed with the two QB idea last year at Tulsa (but scrapped it before the first game), and now he has this mess at Auburn.
morning!
