Furlough, Pt. II: Day Six (Friday)

Hey everyone. Thursday was the craziest weather day I've seen during my 10-year stay in Montgomery. We received 10+ inches of rain in less than six hours. Streets flooded. Cars floating away. Houses wet.

It sucked.

I hope you Gumpians fared reasonably well. Still can't believe how that whole thing went down. The rain wouldn't stop!

Auburn? I'll do my best to recap on Sunday and into next week. I'm on a mandated, unpaid furlough and I can't work. This blog entry was pre-loaded last weekend.

Yes, I correctly predicted flash food conditions six days in advance. Rich Thomas had better watch his back.

From the last thread...
A few more thoughts on the Chizik speech last night...

There was a little coach speak going on, but on the whole, I think Chizik gets what Auburn is about, both on a football level and on a "Auburn means something special, we're different" level. I fully expect to see a very motivated team next fall. We'll still be a 7-8 win ball team, but there will be no question that the team left everything out on the field after every game. So we've got that going for us...

He also commented on sitting down with the players one on one and explaining to them what standards they were going to be held to both on and off the field, and that the standard would not be lowered to meet the players, the player would have to rise to the standard. Coach said some players didn't buy into that, and they aren't there any longer. Any ideas who he was talking about?

You can take Kevin Costner films,

Hope I have ruined Costner for all of you now.

In Favre's defense: how many newspaper articles has he written, and how many sportscenter pieces has he produced? The guy is having a hard time letting go, which is understandable. I would also have a hard time retiring at age 40. He can do whatever he wants to for all I care. Don't blame Favre, blame the people obsessed with him for this over-coverage.

10:21 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

J-z, my guess as to who Chiz was talking about that is no longer around includes Chris Slaughter, Trey Blackmon, and a reserve offensive linemen or two.

To me, it isn't something to get upset about. When a new coaching staff arrives, I would prefer for the to get rid of any players that don't buy into the new way of doing things, and it doesn't really matter how many of those there are. If only 20 players remain, that is fine, just make sure they are 20 that buy into the program.

10:23 AM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

I'm kind of tired of hearing about Favre, too, but I could still enjoy watching him play, unlike when some other players held on too long. He still has a decent amount of ability left. There's still the chance to see a great play or a train wreck.

10:26 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

It is about time for Favre to move on to greener pastures. He should find a different interest, like coaching or something. Hey, maybe he could find an institure to investigate the spelling of his name and see if there is a cure that will allow the v to pass the r.

I understand where you are coming from, but I would be pretty annoyed if people told me it was time to retire and I didn't think so. I don't buy into the whole "it will screw up his legacy" crap. You know, I think it is more of a selfish thing on the part of some fans. Some people don't want to see their hero not perform at an elite level or get humiliated, so they want them to quit before that happens. Well, for many competitors, it takes being humiliated a few times before they can be at peace with quitting. Let it happen and don't complain.

J-Z ...

You offered this nugget within a sentence, "... I think Chizik gets what Auburn is about, both on a football level and on a 'Auburn means something special, we're different' level."

That, for all the screaming last December, is why he's here. He gets it. He gets us. He gets the good, the bad and the ugly and embraces it all.

No one else who interviewed for the job "got it," and to me that's an important component for whomever our coach will be.

I thought, of course, it would be Muschamp, who also "gets it," but that didn't happen -- maybe it could have, maybe it never would have. That doesn't really matter now.

I love everything I've seen from our coach to this point. He made his staff the priority -- taking less money to pay more to the troops and to Troop. He's been innovative without losing our identity or our dignity.

Does this translate into wins? The fact is, if we have a winning season, I'll be pleased. But I see his vision. It meshes nicely with mine -- not that matters to anyone other than me. I think he's got a good chance to be much more than a 5-19 coach. A whole lot more.

11:12 AM
Blogger j-z said...

Another nugget...I don't know if any of you guys have ever been in the same room with CGC, but he has the most intense gaze of any man I have ever laid eyes on. Take the 1000 yard stare of an experienced army sniper and multiply it by 10. I don't know if he gets that from his dad or where, but he's got it.

No doubt in my mind that he's the first coach at AU since one Patrick Fain Dye with this kind of mental toughness and determination.

(And I fully expect a good representation from the Hotties at the AAC meeting on May 28th at the Legends. Trooper Taylor is scheduled to speak there.)

Baghdad does evoke a very hazy recollection. I seem to recall they weren't quite as big/popular as some of the others making the circuit along the lines of Eli, White Animals, Poonanny (more of a frat house party band I think), etc.

2:59 PM

Baghdad had the black guy who would come running out and take over as lead singer about midway through one of their sets. He sang Hendrix tunes, among others. Everybody would go nuts when he came out.

I am sorry I missed Alvin's latest rant.

Wish I had been in attendance to witness it.

This girl I dated at Bama used to like to go see some mediocre band called the Cheesebrokers. They played 80's music almost exclusively.

I've always wondered how one became a Cheese Broker...

Have we talked about Beano Cook and Ivan Maisel talking about Urban Meyer whining about Auburn's Tiger Prowl?

It was music to my ears that both hosts told Urban that he should keep his thoughts to himself. He looked stupid.

Bike trails around here are like expressways. Few road crossings and slowpokes (joggers) in the passing lanes.

My new apartment has a view of the Washington Monument and about 2/3 of the Mall. That was a big factor in choosing it.

Yes, cincy, I sleep. But since I don't wake up rested, sleep isn't all that useful.

AU1 - this series is over with Gonchar out, thanks to slime mold Ovechkin. Pens weren't even in the playoffs with Gonchar out the first 50+ games of the season.
