LIVE BLOG: Chizik presser
Hey everyone. The Head Coach is here.
That's a wrap.
Photo credit: Todd Van Emst/Auburn University
- He says the La Tech game will be "fun."
- On learning more about his team Saturday: "Two-a-days is different because alls you know is from going against each other. The great thing about the first game is that you get a starting point. I don't know where we're at right now."
- Daren Bates is a starter now: ``Immediately when he got on campus here, he got our attention. He did some things that make you go: Wow. We force-fed him football ... just to see what he could handle. We thought he could handle it. We feel like he's our best option back there right now. Mentally, he gets it. We're going to go with it."
- So many young guys at wideout: "Can they catch the football. Can they run their timing routes? We've got some young guys you're going to see play a lot. We wish we didn't have to play this many young ones, but it is what it is. They've all done a great job of coming in here and trying to learn the offense. We're going to play the ones who we feel like give us the best chance."
- On the tailbacks and offensive line: ``We know we have to run the football. We have experienced guys there. They've been there and done that. That's going to be a big part of what we're trying to accomplish. We're going to lean heavily on that. I say that, but I know we need to throw the ball as well."
- Says there will be "10 to 12" new names you'll have to get used to seeing. (ie freshmen)
- On Hot Carter: "I don't go into the injury situation. We're not anticipating him playing this weekend."
- On Eguae and Dee Ford: "We feel good about them."
- Is a first game useful when assessing Chizik?: "There's a lot of unknown factors. You have a new offense, a new defense and on top of that, you're throwing in 10 to 12 freshman. I don't know what people will read into and what they won't."
- ``There are growing pains that come along with a young team. We're going to be very demanding on them. We also knows what comes with the newness. That's not an excuse. We won't use excuses."
- He thinks "Coach Dooley" is doing a heck of a job ($1 to Brownie) at Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs are basically the best team ever in the history of college football. Chizik is super high on this team. "This is a great challenge. This team has been together for three years, this team we're playing. They have a lot of confidence."
- On LTU: "They're a physical team and they're very well-coached. Usually, if you want to see how tough a team is, look at their run stats." (I'm guessing LTU's defense is good against the run)
- First game here vs. first game at Iowa State: "It's a lot different. Two years ago, I was going into my first game as a head coach. That's all behind me. As far as the head coaching thing ... it's really night and day. I'm really excited to be back here."
- On Kodi Burns: "He's going to be in the game. He's going to be playing. You're going to see him at several different spots."
- On monitoring his players' safety (in light of Brandon Deaderick's situation): "Am I concerned about them on a daily basis? Absolutely. Every one of them. I worry about everything -- getting an education, on the field, off the field. We've always got our players in mind."
- "Eric Smith is not playing in this first game."
- On regaining swagger: "You find out on game day. There are a lot of things that happen on game day -- good, bad and indifferent. I don't know if you can measure that before you get out on the field and play."
That's a wrap.

FAH AGAIN!
YEAH!
THT, you're killing my back to back chances.
someone told me there was a new thread. did I go to the wrong one? where is everyone?
so close
how exciting!
Hey Zteven - Where have you been?
this is the newest thread, you were fortunate in your refresh timing.
whoa, there y'all are. How can y'all tell me there's a new thread, but I stick around on the old one long enough to get BEASLEY, and still beat y'all here.
Did y'all get stuck in pre-game traffic?
Well, Comment section open in one window, Blog open in another. It is truly Football Season
Sean two in row...just said NO! Gotta find out about HOT Jay G?
oh, i see i missed an entire thread. I better get back to work and leave the posting to professionals.
Good idea bro.
We are about to be hit with so much knowledge.
I bet a lot is spoken at this presser, but nothing actually said. He will have to answer about "Hot" Carter, that will be the most interesting thing.
Monica
was away for a few days. spent this am with a good cup of coffee, catching up on you guys. LOVE the Wade Christopher stuff! And your new motto... (Dont start none...)
THought Benton was the starter as well.Really doesnt mean much he will play a ton im sure.
LOL Glad you're back.
ATL- I believe Benton is the starter in the 3 wide set.
this post: FUN
I just thought he was ahead of D Adams. Like i said doesnt really matter much. He will play. The real thing that bothers me is HOT!
Adams and Zachery have been getting all the praise from Trooper and the 2 guarenteed starters. I'm hoping they produce this year.
Gene Chizik's go to quote for the 2009 Auburn Tigers: "It is what it is."
We GOT the motors just hope the OL is up to the task
Jay, ask him why I am not starting.
" it is what it is" Chizzy
We should all embrace this philosophy for the season. I think it will make our lives a little better if ya know what I mean.
Don't worry,
Be Chizzy.
So Hot Carter is injured. Lovely.
It beats "The Hay is in the Barn"...
If the 5 starting OL stay healthy we have a good chance of having a darn good season. That is the key.
The thing is, Tubs would say that at the end of practice to the players, not just to the media. I would always look around to see if there were television cameras or microphones when he said it.
10+ freshmen is a lot.
Interesting...
"We won't use excuese."- Chizik = me liking it.
NO DROPS
NO EXCUSES
re: the hay quote
HATED that phrase!
Well someone has said that count a loss for each freshman starter...how many do we get off the bat?
Oh ok, only 1...
"a loss for each freshman starter"...that would mean the "hay IS ALREADY in the barn.
Jorell Bostrom????
Who is Jorell Bostrom????
LMAO @ ($1 to Brownie)
So just how many spots with Kodi play saturday?
I know Im gonna be embarassed for asking, but who the @*%$ is Hot Carter?
What did he expect Chizik to say?
That these guys suck, but our talent level makes us suck as bad?
Come on. Chizik isn't going to say anything of note at these things.
Moving along...
If we get up big early, Kodi will play play a lot of spots.
If it's a down to the wire game, I bet we only see Kodi in the Wildcat.
Be embarassed...Antione Carter DE from Dilliard HIch school in Ft. Lauderdale. He is a junior. He had a sack in his first game as a freshman.
I wonder if Kodi can double as kicker as Ochocinco did?
Kidding Zteven
Chiz sounds more genuine when he talks about caring about his players than Rich Rod did yesterday.
Kodi as WR
Oh, you mean HIM?
*turning red*
You can't measure till the tree hits the ground.
Then you start to build.
Wow that went quick!
I think we'll see Kodi at Wildcat, regular QB, WR, RB, TE, holder, and LB....or maybe just wildcat.
Jorrell Bostrom is the walk-on kid from a JC in Utah. He went on some mormon thing for 2-3 years after high school, and was .. I think .. 360 odd lbs when he got back.
I didn't think he will get to play.
I do not like the depth chart. Too many freshmen.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Chiz is a man of few words, even less meaningful words.
Ochocinco, the one that got away for the USMNT.
Aero, since we were typing up our responses and yours is more detailed and first, I will defer to you.
Are you referring to Chad Johnson?
Hear any tears over the phone Jay? I bet Rich Rod is a journalism GOLD MINE!
WERK-Jorell is a JUCO transfer walk on I believe.
Short and sweet and not much substance
Exactly what we should have expected
Yes, Monica, the WR formerly known as Chad Johnson.
It remains Chad Johnson to me.
There is no such player as Chad Johnson. Chad Ochocinco plays in the NFL...Then again, I know some old people who, to this day, call Muhammed Ali "Cassius Clay" .
Where's Jay G? We want, nay, we demand, a Hot Carter update!
Actually Digger, it's pretty easy to measure a tree before it hits the ground. All you need is a clinometer and a measuring tape. See what you do is.... nevermind.
Who the heck is John Douglas?
But a good carpenter doesn't care how tall a tree is but starts his measurments after it has been cut and allen.
Boy that had enough typo's for awhile
John Douglas was our fullback last year.
Since we had no formations that required a fullback, he never really played.
Need to go eat something not sure what, Later
John Douglas used to be a fullback.
suprised to see Gabe McKenzie listed behind him. all thise new position listings confuse me. yo man, i'm the H. the what?
Better retract that "demand" PF.
That's begging for a fast trip to the hurt locker.
Who cuts their own trees anymore? Digger, you are hereby known to me as Paul Bunyan.
lmao @ "nay"
I just wanted a chance to say "nay" followed by a stronger verb. Demand worked. What's a man to do?
Looking over the depth chart, I would love to see McKenzie knock the puddin' out of a CB on a quick flair pass to Benton.
Scottie B, have you ever done a painting of that Junior Rosegreen photo on the from page? If so (or if one is done in the future), I'd like a print.
I have no shame and since it got buried in an earlier thread, I have a post on Eddie's blog about the opener of the Chizik era.
Please comment here and/or there.
Chizik, Auburn Need Definitive Win in Opener
The title of the Junior Rosegreen painting should be "The Day the Receiver Died"
Woo hooo!!! Live blogging for the first game week presser!!! This is getting exciting.
His Momma named Clay, I'm gonna call him Clay
I hate it whenever "swagger" is discussed. So incredibly overused. Also, it is unimportant. It is like some people believe "Once Miami/FSU/whoever gets their swagger back, then they will be OK." No, they swaggered because they were good. Being good comes first. And swagger is a stupid word anyway.
Of course, nothing beats the overuse of David Pollack's "motor". Boy o boy, did that guy have a tremendous motor! His motor never stopped! What a big motor!
Isn't swagger also used to describe drunk people?
Indeed, Tommy D. So maybe Auburn should show up drunk to the game?
underestimating swagger = mistake
I like Old Spice's Swagger d-o.
it's nice...like this blog.
nope, never done that one PF but it would be fun to give it a shot.
talking on the air with food in your mouth is so gross
I am just thankful that David Pollack did have have swagger and then lose it. I can only imagine the ESPN feature.
"David Pollack's tremendous motor has been well documented. However, the last three games he has gone without a tackle. Pollack is now trying to figure out how to get his swagger back. He still has the big motor, but he needs his swagger back. Motor. Swagger.
(Pollack being interviewed)
Pollack: You know, I've had the big motor going, but I just gotta get back my swagger. This isn't Georgia football. We all need our swagger back. I have a big motor.
K Herbstreit: How are you going to get the swagger back?
Pollack: Just taking it one game at a time, getting out there with my big motor, trusting in my teammates, and just getting that swagger back. Can you imagine if my motor had swagger? How unstoppable would that be? A swagger motor? Motor of swagger?"
OK I'm done. motor swagger.
Whatcha chomp chomp chomp mean chomp by that chomp chomp Monica?
Swagger. That's a funny word. Swagger.
Talking anywhere with food in the mouth is gross. I may play a rude guy on the internet, but I am very much an advocate of manners. Our society seems to have lost sight of even the most simple of them. I say they start teaching them in HS, because it looks like that subject isn't being taught at home.
Monica... It aint easy, being Chizzy!
I always feel bad when I hear David Pollack's name. He deserved a longer playing career than he was given. Some things can't be explained.
I hate that Pollack's career was shortened, but I hate even more that I have to listen to him try to be a journalist.
Anyone know where I can get a Wade Christopher jersey?
PF, I work with a guy that talks with food in his mouth all the time and it aggravates the sh*** out of me.
I have an officemate who talks with his food in his mouth. If someone comes in to talk to him during lunch, he continues eating and talking to them. Swagger motor.
There is a guy who used to eat lunch with us at work, and he was someone who talked with his mouth full all the time. He was a guy who was a topper and had a story that was always far bigger and better than the one you just told.
I agree PF, manners are a thing of the past for most.
While some were surprised by Todzilla, Daten Bates has to be the biggest shock so far under the Chiz. Arriving a couple of days into preseason practice and earning a starting position is incredible. This two star guy is likely going to be a star.
My wife and I went out to eat a couple of weeks ago. At the booth next to us was a kid that was probably 16 and his mom.
The kid had his massive sunglasses on, hat on sideways and talking back to his mom the whole time. At one point he just layed down in the booth while they were eating.
My parents would have beaten me senseless if I had done something like that.
I'm now waiting for someone to come up with a quentin tarantino-like story about they handled someone that would not stop talking with their mouthful, and in it using the words motor and swagger.
For you, BigCat!
"It ain't easy being, Chizzy!"
Happy to hear that Pollack is doing well after the injury, but i could not stand that guy. The love affair the CBS had with the two "Davids" at georgia made me wanna throw up. I loved when we wore them out in in 2004
If someone were talking to me with food in her/his mouth, I would discontinue that conversation with a polite explanation as to why I was discontinuing that conversation.
My latest manners crisis is those who thing it's ok to text and carry on a face to face conversation at the same time.
Someone likes our depth chart. In my opinion, we are a couple of key injuries away from panic mode on defense. There are just too many positions that are just two deep.
Keep in mind that in terms of a depth chart, the two deep have a good chance of playing. You expect players on the depth chart that won't play in the games unless there are some injuries.
Dang. Now I hear that Chizik is sticking with the All Auburn All Orange All make me puke thing.
Forget that!
I'm sticking with my call for the Blue Out!
We have depth issues?
I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but that depth chart could get very scary with just a few injuries.
You're being Captain Obvious, not Debbie Downer.
I'll be there in navy blue, Sensi. That's a guarantee. I just hope I won't be blue.
I'm blue da ba dee da ba da
Steve, I had to take a look and see who the author (Charlie Roberts) was. So I clicked on the "about the author" link and came up with a blank page. Which made me think, "that's very nice that he has an opinion."
I've just never heard of him, that's not to say he doesn't know his stuff. I hope he does
I say Chiz makes everyone on the North side of the stadium wear orange, and the South side wear blue. It'll be awesome.
THT, me you and Eddie are on the Blue train.
What'd really be cool is if people in odd numbered seats wore orange, and even numbered seats wore blue, then we could get some tiger stripes working in the stands!!
How about this side say "Touchdown" and the other side say "Auburn" after the first score....That went over real well. only 2.5 games till we scored our first TD.
Speaking of Tarantino, his motor may still be goin but that guy definitely lost his swagger. I'm still trying to figure out how to restart my motor after watching his latest film, I'll figure that out before I can even think about swagger. My swagger motor is definitely not motoring or swaggering.
Mr.TD, I think they'd need to wider than every other seat. Looking ahead a little bit, but maybe next year, some fancy engineer can figure out the correct seating arrangement for the tiger stripes, and when they print your ticket, it instructs you to wear either orange or blue. I secretly hope Sensi's seats are orange.
If I were the head ball coach, he's what I would have said. The media would love me.
"Eltoro is in the barn. But on Saturday, his @$$ will be loose. We expect him to go all Pamplona on someone DI-rectly.
"We don't call him 'Hot' anymore. He's 'Lukewarm' 'til he does something.
"Kodio? Kodio? Wherefore art thou Kodio? Wherever we line him up. You'll see Saturday.
"John Douglas? Never heard of him. Next."
BEAT HACK: What do you want the fans to wear to the game?
CHIZ: Pants. Tell J-Z that. Now.
i heard that new Tarantino movie was really good. ????
Is Kodi UnoCinco?
Do it Kodi

Scottie, I heard that it was, have read rave reviews...they must have seen a different movie. STUPID is the word that came to mind afterward.
If Doug Amos could get paid for the number of times he says "I" or the number of times her tells a story about himself, he'd be a very wealthy man.
Sensi why are you using my material and turning it into your avatar?

and it doesn't even fit! You're not Captain Obvious. You're Captain Contrary!
If you don't like orange, then don't wear orange. Is this a big deal?
I kinda liked the new Tarantino flick, although it was not his best work IMHO, it was as over the edge and insane as ever.
Although, to that point, my wife said that she was more than ready to walk out of the movie.
The best way I can define the new Tarantino flick: Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing...
Tarantino = yuck
And you are Mrs. Drama Queen
Omni - I don't think I've ever agreed with you more.
Rob Zombie's idea of scary is loud, jump in your face, and loads of naughty words.
Just FYI there...
Where did Rob Zombie come from?
Tarantino = geek who found an audience among disconnected boys with no social skills who were overstimulated by video games and only excited by violence.
but it sure made him $$$$
just my opinion
Monica, that is a VERY good analysis. I think you might over stereotyping a bit, but all in all I agree with that.
Eddie,
Maybe the best tribute we could have given Jim Fyffe to start the 2003 season was to not let Rod Bramblett crucify his catch phrase until 2 1/2 games into the season.
RK- Touche.
Most of the new video games now connect to the gorenet, and come with chat software for improving social skills.
ub3r pwn3d frag!!!!111 one one
i'm off to take my 3 kids to the vet. this should be one of the most exciting extravaganzas of frustration i've ever encountered. wish me luck. :(
Ciao Tutti!!!
NO DROPS!!!
Keep the hate alive!
But obviously I don't know what I'm talking about, having never owned a video game console, or a tarantino flick.
I've seen some of his flicks, and I hate them.
Having fun, 2.0???
Pulp Fiction was great. I can honestly say I haven't seen any other Tarantino movies.
I loved Reservoir Dogs. Is that so wrong?
Ciao Ciao 2.0
I've been learning the Itallian ways after working with them closely for most of 2009.
Did we learn anything valueable today?
I loved Jackie Brown and Pulp Fiction.
The novels of Susan Sontag are self indulgent, over-rated crap?
McKenzie being the third string fullback is interesting. He has been more high profile than Douglas. Wisner as the third string tight end is also somewhat of a surprise.
Oh, my, J-Z, you do make speeches.
Get this... this week is tailgate week at work. Fans of certain teams can set up areas on our floor to support their teams. My desk is in a corner and on one side is the Alabama tailgate area and on the other side is the UGA area.
Thankfully I only work in the office two days a week because I'm not sure I could deal with see all of this stuff every day. I'm very thankful that I work from home on Friday which is the actual tailgate party day.
I guess the old 'tino was decent. The new 'tino is overdoing the blood n gore thing.
Is live blogging a presser a violation of the SEC Media Resposibility and Secrecy Act (MRSA)?
The SEC could end up screwing themselves if they keep trying to hamstring the media. Imagine what sports would be if the media didn't cover the SEC. If we were suddenly flood with coverage from other conferences instead, I suspect it would seriously affect the fan bases.
WERK - That's harsh. Be strong!
RK, you have to do something. I don't know what, but I bet j-z could use his Eagle Scout skills and love of all things destruction to come up with a sensible suggestion.
RK ... tell them that Thursday is "Take a Sledgehammer to Work Day." Then use it. Repeatedly.
Phred - we found out today that we will find out on game day whether or not we have regained our swagger.
"A freshman is starting at quarterback at USC. A virgin is starting at quarterback at Florida. Coaches are crying at the podium in Honolulu and Ann Arbor."
I really enjoy Pat Forde.
I see 2.0 made a hit & run post from a Florentine internet cafe. Hate I missed that. I'm going to blame UA-T for the meeting that called me away from the 'puter right before 2.0 and MrsTHT logged into google chat.
Things like that keep my hateometer pegged to the right.
I really enjoy Pat Forde, too.
bow chicka wow wow...
Did Ball freakin' State's O-Line Coach really take a swing at Rich Rod?
"Players off today.............................Unlike Michigan." -@Coach_Eck via twitter
Thanks for the excellent link, PF. Is there a coach in America more screwed than Rich Rodriguez. Return to West Virginia? Not gonna happen. Face a lynch mob? Much more likely.
I like Forde too. Just the right amount of disdain and snarkiness for college football and its fans (ie, his readers).
I like Stewart Mandel at SI also. Oh, and that Jay G Tate guy.
Auburn is listed as the most likely team to get upset by the WAC. Wow.
My favorite faux tweet was "I'm going to be 58 in two weeks. How much longer can I work the 29-year-old, pseudo-surfer act?" -- USC coach Pete Carroll (14)
I love it when we're the underdog. Or when people make ridiculous statements concerning the WAC. Although I guess until we see what happens on Saturday evening, anything IS possible.
Barbara Dooley up next on Fbaum!!!
I know you don't want to miss it!
In a link he provided, it showed Auburn as one of only 5 or so teams to not play a ranked nonconference opponent in the last 5 years. Was South Florida not ranked when they beat us?
Aubie got upgraded. This never
happens. First Class!
we were (briefly) ranked 17th; USF was unranked.
Bans Dooley is obnoxious. She makes my ears hurt
She MMBSAL
Was West Virginia not ranked when we played them last year?
Was West Virginia unranked last season?
Brilliant question Joy:)
I don't think USF was ranked until after they beat us. Man that was a frustrating game!
pete carroll in '03 was the last ranked non-conf. opponent at the time AU played them.
No, I don't recall them being ranked. They had a couple of bad losses prior to our game.
My post was in reference to West VA
USF was eventually in the top 10 for a bit before self destructing.
Were they ranked after they played us?
RK...you may just have to go all MacGruber on their @$$ one time. Although, for what it's worth, I get along with UGA fan, but that's just me.
I ate lunch with Jeno James and his dad today. Just sayin'. Man, that dude is BIG. Rock solid and no fat.
I ate lunch at home today. Alone.
Hey Phred, get in touch with my brother about your lunch with Jeno. He and Jeno were great friends in college but they kind of lost touch. I know Eddie would like to see how he's doing.
I ate lunch at my desk alone, but not really alone.
I just noticed that all the receivers on the depth chart are over 6 feet tall. When the heck is the last time that happened at Auburn?
Okay, my dog was here but I didn't count her. She just lays around and sleeps. She contributed nothing.
Or, should that have been "lies around"? I don't know.
I'm moving it on over.
I have to admit Mrs. Dooley has been a hoot today.
Who's with me?
I'd follow you anywhere, Norm!
well, at least to the next page...
Norm is back to his bad self. All is right with the world.
