LIVE BLOG: Chizik presser

Hey everyone. The Head Coach is here.

  • He says the La Tech game will be "fun."

  • On learning more about his team Saturday: "Two-a-days is different because alls you know is from going against each other. The great thing about the first game is that you get a starting point. I don't know where we're at right now."

  • Daren Bates is a starter now: ``Immediately when he got on campus here, he got our attention. He did some things that make you go: Wow. We force-fed him football ... just to see what he could handle. We thought he could handle it. We feel like he's our best option back there right now. Mentally, he gets it. We're going to go with it."

  • So many young guys at wideout: "Can they catch the football. Can they run their timing routes? We've got some young guys you're going to see play a lot. We wish we didn't have to play this many young ones, but it is what it is. They've all done a great job of coming in here and trying to learn the offense. We're going to play the ones who we feel like give us the best chance."

  • On the tailbacks and offensive line: ``We know we have to run the football. We have experienced guys there. They've been there and done that. That's going to be a big part of what we're trying to accomplish. We're going to lean heavily on that. I say that, but I know we need to throw the ball as well."

  • Says there will be "10 to 12" new names you'll have to get used to seeing. (ie freshmen)

  • On Hot Carter: "I don't go into the injury situation. We're not anticipating him playing this weekend."

  • On Eguae and Dee Ford: "We feel good about them."

  • Is a first game useful when assessing Chizik?: "There's a lot of unknown factors. You have a new offense, a new defense and on top of that, you're throwing in 10 to 12 freshman. I don't know what people will read into and what they won't."

  • ``There are growing pains that come along with a young team. We're going to be very demanding on them. We also knows what comes with the newness. That's not an excuse. We won't use excuses."

  • He thinks "Coach Dooley" is doing a heck of a job ($1 to Brownie) at Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs are basically the best team ever in the history of college football. Chizik is super high on this team. "This is a great challenge. This team has been together for three years, this team we're playing. They have a lot of confidence."

  • On LTU: "They're a physical team and they're very well-coached. Usually, if you want to see how tough a team is, look at their run stats." (I'm guessing LTU's defense is good against the run)

  • First game here vs. first game at Iowa State: "It's a lot different. Two years ago, I was going into my first game as a head coach. That's all behind me. As far as the head coaching thing ... it's really night and day. I'm really excited to be back here."

  • On Kodi Burns: "He's going to be in the game. He's going to be playing. You're going to see him at several different spots."

  • On monitoring his players' safety (in light of Brandon Deaderick's situation): "Am I concerned about them on a daily basis? Absolutely. Every one of them. I worry about everything -- getting an education, on the field, off the field. We've always got our players in mind."

  • "Eric Smith is not playing in this first game."

  • On regaining swagger: "You find out on game day. There are a lot of things that happen on game day -- good, bad and indifferent. I don't know if you can measure that before you get out on the field and play."

That's a wrap.

I hate it whenever "swagger" is discussed. So incredibly overused. Also, it is unimportant. It is like some people believe "Once Miami/FSU/whoever gets their swagger back, then they will be OK." No, they swaggered because they were good. Being good comes first. And swagger is a stupid word anyway.

Of course, nothing beats the overuse of David Pollack's "motor". Boy o boy, did that guy have a tremendous motor! His motor never stopped! What a big motor!

12:33 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Isn't swagger also used to describe drunk people?

I am just thankful that David Pollack did have have swagger and then lose it. I can only imagine the ESPN feature.

"David Pollack's tremendous motor has been well documented. However, the last three games he has gone without a tackle. Pollack is now trying to figure out how to get his swagger back. He still has the big motor, but he needs his swagger back. Motor. Swagger.

(Pollack being interviewed)
Pollack: You know, I've had the big motor going, but I just gotta get back my swagger. This isn't Georgia football. We all need our swagger back. I have a big motor.
K Herbstreit: How are you going to get the swagger back?
Pollack: Just taking it one game at a time, getting out there with my big motor, trusting in my teammates, and just getting that swagger back. Can you imagine if my motor had swagger? How unstoppable would that be? A swagger motor? Motor of swagger?"

OK I'm done. motor swagger.

Talking anywhere with food in the mouth is gross. I may play a rude guy on the internet, but I am very much an advocate of manners. I have an officemate who talks with his food in his mouth. If someone comes in to talk to him during lunch, he continues eating and talking to them. Swagger motor.

12:49 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

There is a guy who used to eat lunch with us at work, and he was someone who talked with his mouth full all the time. He was a guy who was a topper and had a story that was always far bigger and better than the one you just told.

I agree PF, manners are a thing of the past for most.

12:50 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

While some were surprised by Todzilla, Daten Bates has to be the biggest shock so far under the Chiz. Arriving a couple of days into preseason practice and earning a starting position is incredible. This two star guy is likely going to be a star.

12:50 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

My wife and I went out to eat a couple of weeks ago. At the booth next to us was a kid that was probably 16 and his mom.

The kid had his massive sunglasses on, hat on sideways and talking back to his mom the whole time. At one point he just layed down in the booth while they were eating.

My parents would have beaten me senseless if I had done something like that.

12:51 PM

I'm now waiting for someone to come up with a quentin tarantino-like story about they handled someone that would not stop talking with their mouthful, and in it using the words motor and swagger.

Happy to hear that Pollack is doing well after the injury, but i could not stand that guy. The love affair the CBS had with the two "Davids" at georgia made me wanna throw up. I loved when we wore them out in in 2004

12:59 PM
Blogger Monica said...

If someone were talking to me with food in her/his mouth, I would discontinue that conversation with a polite explanation as to why I was discontinuing that conversation.

My latest manners crisis is those who thing it's ok to text and carry on a face to face conversation at the same time.

12:59 PM

Someone likes our depth chart. In my opinion, we are a couple of key injuries away from panic mode on defense. There are just too many positions that are just two deep.

1:00 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Keep in mind that in terms of a depth chart, the two deep have a good chance of playing. You expect players on the depth chart that won't play in the games unless there are some injuries.

Blogger Seanzie said...

Speaking of Tarantino, his motor may still be goin but that guy definitely lost his swagger. I'm still trying to figure out how to restart my motor after watching his latest film, I'll figure that out before I can even think about swagger. My swagger motor is definitely not motoring or swaggering.

1:17 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Mr.TD, I think they'd need to wider than every other seat. Looking ahead a little bit, but maybe next year, some fancy engineer can figure out the correct seating arrangement for the tiger stripes, and when they print your ticket, it instructs you to wear either orange or blue. I secretly hope Sensi's seats are orange.

McKenzie being the third string fullback is interesting. He has been more high profile than Douglas. Wisner as the third string tight end is also somewhat of a surprise.

Get this... this week is tailgate week at work. Fans of certain teams can set up areas on our floor to support their teams. My desk is in a corner and on one side is the Alabama tailgate area and on the other side is the UGA area.

Thankfully I only work in the office two days a week because I'm not sure I could deal with see all of this stuff every day. I'm very thankful that I work from home on Friday which is the actual tailgate party day.

Is live blogging a presser a violation of the SEC Media Resposibility and Secrecy Act (MRSA)?

2:16 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The SEC could end up screwing themselves if they keep trying to hamstring the media. Imagine what sports would be if the media didn't cover the SEC. If we were suddenly flood with coverage from other conferences instead, I suspect it would seriously affect the fan bases.

RK, you have to do something. I don't know what, but I bet j-z could use his Eagle Scout skills and love of all things destruction to come up with a sensible suggestion.

I see 2.0 made a hit & run post from a Florentine internet cafe. Hate I missed that. I'm going to blame UA-T for the meeting that called me away from the 'puter right before 2.0 and MrsTHT logged into google chat.

Things like that keep my hateometer pegged to the right.

Thanks for the excellent link, PF. Is there a coach in America more screwed than Rich Rodriguez. Return to West Virginia? Not gonna happen. Face a lynch mob? Much more likely.

I like Forde too. Just the right amount of disdain and snarkiness for college football and its fans (ie, his readers).

I like Stewart Mandel at SI also. Oh, and that Jay G Tate guy.

Auburn is listed as the most likely team to get upset by the WAC. Wow.

My favorite faux tweet was "I'm going to be 58 in two weeks. How much longer can I work the 29-year-old, pseudo-surfer act?" -- USC coach Pete Carroll (14)

I love it when we're the underdog. Or when people make ridiculous statements concerning the WAC. Although I guess until we see what happens on Saturday evening, anything IS possible.

In a link he provided, it showed Auburn as one of only 5 or so teams to not play a ranked nonconference opponent in the last 5 years. Was South Florida not ranked when they beat us?

I just noticed that all the receivers on the depth chart are over 6 feet tall. When the heck is the last time that happened at Auburn?
