Arkansas 44, Auburn 23

Hey everyone. I'll be posting some relevant stats, quotes and information here as the afternoon progresses.

  • Gene Chizik said LB Eltoro Freeman is on the team, but didn't make the trip because of "personal issues."

  • Onterio McCalebb on what the loss means: ``You're going to see a whole different team from what you've seen. We're going to go out there and practice hard. We're not going to be not focused in practice. We're going to come out ever hard because of this loss right here.

  • Adam Herring on what happened: ``Coming out of halftime, we knew we were still in it. We knew what our offense would be capable of. We didn't put it together as a team today. We just didn't get the breaks."

  • Ted Roof on front-line substitutions: ``We rotated and played a lot of people. That's going to help us develop some depth. We need to do that and we're going to continue to do that. When we do sub, the guys who come into the ball game have to get it done for us."

  • Gus Malzahn on what he told players at halftime: ``We just started talking about that there's nothing they were surprising us with. It was just a matter of executing. We kind of shot ourselves in the foot early with some execution, some penalties and some drops, some overthrows -- just some things that we hadn't done all year up to this point."

  • UPDATE: I'm headed back to Tulsa. Take care.

I think Alabama is the best team in the conference.

Guess that makes me a "Bammer" to some of you.

Whatever.

Blogger HamTiger said...

I agree... not sure Bama won't go all the way. They have it together on both sides of the ball. Reminds me of 2004. If one side has a bad day, the other side picks em up. Its a tough combination to beat.

I have a bad feeling about Tebow playing, by the way. I kind of cringe every time he takes a hit. I don't like Florida, but I don't want to see the kid hurt.

Well, I am disappointed in the loss, but I think it will pay dividends for the rest of the season. Seemed to me they never quit and that says a lot. We knew this was going to be a rebuilding year and I still think we have the potential for a great season.

The 3rd quarter has kept me from feeling too bad about it. They showed me more of what we have seen since the season started. We actually worked ourselves back into the game (ie. didn't quit which was awesome) but another turnover and a long TD drive by the Pigs hurt. There were some good things today.

Random thoughts:

Sensi - I've been saying since week 3 that bammer was the best in the nation, but neither of us are bammers.

Looks like Tubs was right about it being a 3 TD game, he just got the winning team wrong. Guess he feels kinda foolish tonight.

AU really needs to beat KY next week. This is now setting up as the 2nd-most important game of the year, just after the WV game. Even I have to admit that 6-6 is possible if we lose it.

Jet, I realize we are very thin, but we aren't that thin on offense. It really shows up on special teams, and later in the game on defense.

We aren't gonna beat anybody 7-0. We've got to outscore people for any win we get now, and that does leave little margin for error. But some games things click, and we'll have some more of those this year.

I kept getting the feeling that Arky had picked up on our offensive tendancies. Last years game against Tulsa may have helped them do that. I won't study the film to see what Arky did and I hope the rest of the SEC doesn't either.

CGM may need to adjust.

Arky definitely planned correctly that we would start the game running/short passing. We needed some early deep passes to back them up. Missed one that was wide open and then couldn't shake guys open downfield until 3rd Qtr.

Cincy....I've noticed the helmets coming off more each year for several years now. The last cfb helmet I saw had a much slicker interior finish than older helmets. In HSFB, helmets were dewsigned to be tight fitting...don't know if today's helmets are designed differently.

Really...6-6? Has anyone seen UGA and Ole Miss play this year? It's one game. There are 6 more and they aren't played on paper and they won't be played today. 5-1 at the halfway mark is pretty good.

We lost today kids, but that doesn't mean we have to like it. Hopefully they'll learn from it and come out and play with more energy.

Ole Miss is good. They played the best team in the nation today.

UGA is baffling. They have as many good athletes as LSU and Fla, but no discipline.

This is the 3rd year for defensive underachievement at UGA. Their DC must go. They get out schemed shoot themselves due to lack of defensive discipline.

Is it just me or is Auburn not a big deal and then POW, ranked and all of a sudden it's a big deal. No highlights to really speak of but this week TV can't get enough. Is this Au's fault for choking after being ranked soooo many times or is it the media. Any thoughts?

EZ...I think the press was reluctant to promote AU until we beat UT. We won our first 4, but exhibited a lot of sloppy play. That sloppy play rightly causes press skepticism.

I don't think that we lost because it is a superstitious thing like we finally got ranked and got the big head. I think that Arky exploited our weaknesses and we couldn't exploit theirs.

8:43 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Steve...yes, and they have a slicker finish than the older ones. Maybe new designs mandate that they not be pumped or fitted as tight.

this is my guess as why helmets are flying

Blogger AUfan said...

Todd didn't have one of his better games, but his play as a whole has been better than I ever thought it could be.

Tate played hard as usual, but the fumble really hurt. Sometimes good players have bad games, I just hate it so many had a bad game at the same time.

I think AU comes out and plays a very good game next week.

8:47 PM

Sean..we got a bunch of Qbs and WRs to trade for LBs. Now if this were only a fantasy league.

8:48 PM

We're a decent 5-1 team that had a bad day. UAT is a very, very good football team. I think they're are the league's best team right now.

We can have a good season, but we're not a 10-11 win team. It's still a fun team.

My sister (18 y/o) and her boyfriend just broke up. They had been dating for a little over a year, it was her first real boyfriend. I think he broke up with her, giving her a variation of the 'its not you its me' speech. I don't know the full story, because my sister called my wife to tell her.
Am I just supposed to stay out of it, do I console her, do I tell her all guys are a$$hats to make her feel better (I really don't want to lie though)?? This is uncharted territory... what do I do here?

Dmiller..my daughter is 21. She had the same happen to her when 18. I left the consoling to my wife and daughter's friends and just let her know I loved her and was available.

If your Sis asks you for consoling, then try to do so and resist the urge to "fix" it. I've comitted numerous errors when trying to "fix" emotional issues for females. If she specifically asks you for advice or your opinion, be honest, but tread carefully.

Linebackers-I happen to like Bynes and Stevens, they have talent and hit hard, but we cant give them any rest due to our numbers.

Word is Eltoro is pouting bc he hasnt been playing, but if he was realistic he would know he has been way out of position this year and is not ready to understand the schemes.

Herring-lots of heart, semi-talent, but he is all we have.

I think we have like four linebackers signed, i say we sign 8 just to be sure.

Ark. threw right across our middle to exploit our linebackers.

Jet - Hugh Nall routinely played just 5 lineman on some of our best teams. But I get your point.

Still, I don't think being "thin" on offense had anything to do with the loss today. Defense is a different matter. And we don't have enough depth to have many experienced players on special teams. On the KO return that killed us after we had rallied, we had players in position to make the tackle; they just couldn't do it.

Beat KY, and we can still have a very good year. But its very difficult for me to imagine a way right now that our team could beat bammer. Maybe I'll think of a way before Thanksgiving. ;)

All the players read the HABOTN and they lost their swagger because Sensi picked us to lose.

First time in a long time I have seen 2 fumbles on the same play. Very sloppy GT - FSU game.

A couple of quit tidbits I gleaned from watching the game a second time through:

Anything and everything that could go wrong in the 2nd quarter did. Starting with the following:
-Down 6, Auburn offense goes 3 and out.
-Defense gives up a TD drive.
-Ensuing kickoff, freak strip of Fannin ARK ball.
-Defense gives up TD on the short field.
-Ensuing drive, CT misses open target on 3rd and 5, FG is good.
-Auburn gives up a huge return.
-Ark starts to drive, defense gets an INT.
-Offense flips the field but stalls.
-Defense gives up a TD drive. That's how you get to 27-3 at the half.

This is just a summation of how we melted down in all three phases today.

or FSU. Its unfortunate that its been turned into a circus down there. I felt like we had that kind of craziness at Auburn last year, and I know the fans are not enjoying their season one bit. Even with the BYU beatdown.

10:17 AM
Blogger Dear Leader said...

I guess my let down is not so much the loss... we all new it was coming one day.. but the sloppy play... I look to our coaches to that one.. they should have not put the Kids in that position..

I would rather a loss where we played to somewhere near our potential..

This was 100% lack of coaching and prep. As one of the writers in AL put it... we were outcoached.

War Eagle!!!

Eddie ...

That's a great point in re Georgia.

OK, kids, I'm @ the airport getting ready to leave FayetteNam. Really nice folks before, during and after game. Catch the HOT FOLKS later.

10:35 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Perhaps it was the combination of the two, being outcoached, and outplayed. Gotta catch, throw, and hold on to the ball, don't commit the stupid penalties (we can't do anything about stupid refs), and tackle. But the coaches also have to put the kids in the right mindset, and position to do that. I'm like you DL if the effort were there for the full game, and we just got beat by the better team I think I could feel alittle better. I still don't feel they are on the whole when both teams are playing to their potential, the better team.

I retract what I stated yesterday about the defense being exposed.

It was exposed weeks ago. Arkansas exploited it better than previous opponents.

Can we duct tape this mess together before Kentucky?

10:50 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Sensi, our defense was on the field WAY too long yesterday. They had to defend the short field too many times. It is just one out of the three phases that sucked yesterday. It's hard to expose something you already know isn't a strong point of the team. It's a thin unit and our linebacker play is killing us. We all knew this coming into the season.

11:02 AM
Blogger AUfan said...

Sensi, I think the defense and special teams(other than Byrum) have shown that they probably are not going to get much(if any) better this season. If the offense is not hitting on all cylinders, Auburn is going to struggle to beat most anyone.

I don't think Chizik and Co want to play this way, but player limitations have left them little choice. I don't see much improvement coming until some reinforcements arrive next season.

11:05 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

We were poorly prepared. No way around that.

Hopefully this week, everyone handles their business.

Kentucky is no top tier opponent, but if we execute like that again on Saturday, they will look like it.

11:06 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Sensi, I think coming back home and playing without the noise on offense will make all the difference in the world. And if our offense is clicking, we won't lose.

11:08 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Based on that formula, we have two wins left on the schedule because we have three home games remaining and in one of those it won't matter.

Back from Fayettenam. It was a tough experience but there are plenty of building blocks going forward. I have a good feeling that we may see a better TEAM effort next week. My football coaches always told me that you learn more in defeat than in victory.

11:22 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Sensi, I like you but you can't count. We actually have 4 home games left (UK, UM, Furman, UAT). I think they need a new road strategy when it comes to offense, I think the slow checks at the LOS are killing us. We will need to change it up when we go to UGA and LSU. UGA is a 3-3 team which is lucky to be 3-3. LSU is not very good on offense. The sky is not falling.

11:37 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

I had to miss the second half but apparently didn't miss much. So many things went wrong from the very begining that it is impossible to point to any one or ten things. We will now find out how good our coaches are and how resilient the players are. Do they still believe in this staff? I think so and will show improvement against KY

11:45 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

From atl ... Arkansas is a very difficult matchup for auburn. Alabama and Arkansas ar the two worst. The other offenses operate in a slower manner. Keep that in mind.

11:47 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

The three WORST things from Saturday:

The Fannin Strip after going down 13-0.
Not getting into the end zone after being down 20-0.
Fumbling on the 5 yard line.

Each one of those things was a mo' killer for us and led to 7 on the ensuing drive from Arkansas. There are your 21 points.

11:48 AM
Blogger Jet said...

I don't think "poor preparation" was the reason we lost.

Invariably, one team has an emotional edge coming into a game. Arkansas had not won a league game at home under Petrino, and Tuberville adds a little gas with his comments.

Under those circumstances, it requires increased execution. We didn't have it. We shot ourselves in the foot on all sides of the ball. We surrendered six first downs by penalty. We overthrew a sure TD, we fumbled a kickoff, and laid the ball down untouched at the goal line. I'm still trying to figure out how that guy got loose on the 70 yard return.

The loss is not on anybody -- staff, specific player, etc. It's on everybody.

It is hard to understand but when things start going wrong it's like a snowball rolling down hill it gains momentum and size and just snows you under.

11:58 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I side with jet here. I don't think preparation is to blame. Coaches can't control fumbles. They can only do so much for penalties. Teams lose. It happens.

12:08 PM
Blogger wtc said...

WOW, just WOW. Too many in here thinkt he sky is falling. Ark epxloited our weakness. Their DE's pinched in almost every play. The offense responded in the 3rd quarter and Tate starts to roll. Notice it was the same play to either side of the field, and he got LOTS of yardage from it.

After all the crap that happened in the 1st half, AU still had a very good chance untilthelas tplay of the 3rd quarter. That KO return killed the momentum ;cause you knew Ark would get some points. And they did.

12:11 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Have we all spent enough time marinating in the loss...can we turn our focus to UK?

12:14 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jay, my question to Malzahn would be why we have went away from having someone in motion. Early in the season it seemed there was always someone in motion. The last two games, we have kind of gone away from that.

As for blaming, it is pretty pointless. We have a good team. We knew from the start it wasn't going to be great due to depth issues. It does seem the team is starting to get tired. We experienced a similar thing about this time last season.

12:17 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Someone earlier asked about Michael Dyer's comments after the game.

I will not post the quotes, but he stated AU is easily his #1 team. He says other thngs also, but uses words 'we didn't take care of the ball, we got off to a slow start.'

This staff feels great about getting him and Seastunk (possibly already a silent commit) but enough about recruiting. Let
s beaat KY and get back on track.

12:18 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Look how many of us went from, I hope we win 6 games, to we can go 11-1 or something. Not just on this blog but your AU friends. The first goal was too low and the second too high. If we are honest, we can see the D will struggle all year. FWIW-I thought Roof would blitz and pressure Mallet all night. They obviously have a reason for why they didn't. When they tell me, I will let you guys know.

12:24 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sensi.."poorly prepared" is a generalized cliche right out of The Bear Bryant Show that Bear used to do his famous "it's all my fault" act.

I don't buy large generalizations. List the specific items and who you think is at fault and we'll discuss those point by point.

Every team has a bad game. AU will have more bad games this year, but every game won't be bad. We were picked 6-7 wins in the preseason. We are on track to do that and could very well do better.

What gets me is that you know this team, therefore you should know better than to make that kind of broad statement.
