Auburn 33, Ole Miss 20

Hey everyone. Hope you enjoyed the game. Auburn fans surely are feeling much better about their ballclub this evening.

Chris Todd looked effective. The pass rush was aggressive. Eltoro Freeman was a swell run-stopped. Ole Miss converted only 3 of its 15 third-down situations.

Not too shabby for a team not expected to win today.

Here's what Auburn is saying ...
  • Gene Chizik on his team: ``I can't give our football team enough credit. The question that everybody wanted to know was -- How is your football team going to respond in a tough time? I think today is a great example of the way they were going to respond. They willed that win. That was a very, very good football team that we beat tonight and our kids deserved it because they never quit fighting. It doesn't surprise anybody in our locker room. That's who they are. I thought tonight proved to a lot of people that we were going to contend and fight."

  • Ted Roof on how he's talked to his unit recently: ````You don't sugar coat it. You tell them the truth," Roof said. ``At the same time, when you lose, you also tell them what they did good. There’s some things they do good. It's hard not to get too low, because it just rips your guts out. I'm just proud of the way they responded."

  • Ben Tate on cracking the 1,000-yard barrier: ````That's good to surpass 1,000 yards. It's even better than I did it in a game that we won. I'm happy about that," he said. ``I want to congratulate my offensive line. Maybe I'll take them out or something like that."

  • Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt on Antonio Coleman: ``Coleman played on a whole different level today. He was on a different level that what we saw on film. We had a hard time with him, then we had to chip him a little bit. It takes away a receiver."

  • Players were told that Zac Etheridge's x-rays showed no structural damage. Several players said they were led to believe Etheridge would be discharged from East Alabama Medical Center on Sunday.

  • Walt McFadden ... telling it like it is: ``We needed this. Maybe some of us were feeling sorry for ourselves. Today they showed that we believe in each other, we know we can play. This is not last year. We're not fixin' to give up, we're not going to point fingers, we're not fixin' to say we need a new quarterback, we need a new running back, we're not fixin' to say anything. We're just going to go out every week and play how we always play."

The third quarter had to be one of the more bizarre quarters in recent Auburn history.

I don't think the Ole Miss player was touched on either long touchdown.

Good point on Bates. I'm surprised he hasn't gotten some unsportsmanlike penalties for actions after the play.

I am very happy. It just seems that that wildcat formation takes the momentum away from our offense.

Nah ... I'm just jabbing a little ... we win a game, and your first shot is complaining about the Wildcat (which I'll be glad to help you complain about).

I'm just giddy over a win. I even liked the part that Ole Miss made a run, and we held on instead of stomping them 31-7. It suits our needs long term to win battles.

After seeing Jahja's ridiculous outfits today and UT's Halloween costumes tonight, I think I would puke if they ever tried something like that with the Auburn's unis.

7:39 PM

I never made it to Cincy's place. I got there about 9:20am tiger walk was over as they shortened since it was raining. One of my friends said there was not very many fans there at that time. I thought it was the smallest crowd outside the stadium I have ever seen. I thought there is no way we get 70k in the stadium. They are saying we had 84k+. It filled in really fast right before the kick off.

7:42 PM

UT's uniforms aren't bad as a halloween thing, but as a regular uniform, they would be terribly ugly.

As for Georgia, if they can just wear those ugly black jerseys with those ugly black helmets, add some ugly black pants and they will be perfect.

I am assuming they are wearing black in honor of the passing of Richt, but it is a bit premature.

War Eagle! HABOTNites... it sure feels good to win a big game! And yes, this wa s abig win for our team. It provided a much needed confidence boost heading into Furman (where we will hopefully rest some starters and heal up some) and Jawja...

The defense looked like it might have turned a corner this week... they looked much improved as a unit. Still bend but (hopefully) don't break, with a lot of bend... but they tackled better and got more pressure on the QB this week.

Offense looked like they were controlling the tempo and the game...when they wanted to. When Todd was allowed to get in a rhythm with the offense, we moved the ball.

I am very happy about the win... much needed for this team's confidence. Hopefully a momentum builder.

I was most pleased with the defensive play today. Eltoro looked like a playmaker. Coleman started looking like Coleman. We actually sacked their QB, which was pretty cool. This was by far our best defensive performance of the season and I think a lot of it has to do with more Bull and less $hit.

Just got home from Auburn! I made it to Cincy's condo, which is very nice by the way, as Cincy, her family and her dogs!

Tiger Walk was the smallest I have ever seen. There was no excitement from the players or the fans. The scholarship parking lot was empty an hour before the game. The stands looked empty too until right before kickoff. The place filled up fast. Still some empty seats up top, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Great game. Enjoyed watching the defense pressure the QB for a change. AC and Eltoro finally showed up. Did Eltoro break a finger?

Considering the early kick, the rain and cold... I thought the turn out for the game was pretty good. The atmosphere was a good one. "Tate then scampered 53 yards for a score, becoming the fifth Auburn back to surpass 3,000 career yards. He tapped an imaginary wristwatch after that play, a gesture the Tigers made after big plays in the game.

"We're just saying it's time for us to do what we got to do," receiver Terrell Zachery said."

The game would have been an absolute runaway by Auburn if we would have managed to hold onto those 3 interceptions that we dropped int he first half, and recover the fumble on the opening kickoff!

9:37 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Not to mention the fumble caused by McFadden (I think) that was called an incomplete catch.

9:37 PM
Blogger Miller said...

True, BigCat...
I heard a lot of folks complaining that we didn't challenge that or that it wasn't reviewed. I guess people don't realize that it wasn't reviewable because the officials called it incomplete on the field.

And yes, it was a fumble.

9:39 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Yea Jet Bates definately plays with a chip on his shoulder that has carried over from his recruiting snubs. I thought he had calmed down from the first few games of the season. Guess he still has a ways to go but he's young.

9:40 PM
Blogger Jet said...

No fussing about officiating ... I watched the game on TV ... the overturned interception in the first half was huge, and I can't conclusively say I saw it hit the ground, as much as I wanted it to.

9:41 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Why would calling it incomplete on the field keep you from being able to review it?

9:43 PM
Blogger Jet said...

FSJ ...

The whistle blows, killing action on the field.

9:45 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

So a pass caught on the sideline that is rule out of bounds (thus incomplete) is not reviewable?

9:47 PM
Blogger Miller said...

fsj,
creates a dead ball situation... I dunno any other reasoning behind it. It's just a rule in the replay review rules.

If they had called it a catch and fumble, they could have reviewed it and made the call however necessary... but since they called it incomplete on the field it was a dead ball and not reviewable.
Same with a runner being ruled down. As soon as the whistle blows the play is dead and anything that happens afterward is not reviewable.

9:49 PM
Blogger War Eagle Girl said...

Been a long good day....going to get my extra hour of sleep now! War Eagle and hope we keep DWWD!!

9:50 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Jet I thought I saw that overturned INT hit the ground. I thought it was a tell-tell sign that the guy that celebrated getting the INT was not the one that had the ball last.

9:50 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

I understand what you are saying about the fumble situation...but I would think that the situation I described above is reviewable (i.e. in bounds/out of bounds) even if they rule it incomplete.

9:51 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

I agree with Jet though on the overturned interception.

They certainly never showed anything on TV that showed the ball hitting the ground. Apparently the replay officials had a view that wasn't shown. The other UM player kept getting in the way of the end of the play.

9:53 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Nope, FSJ.

Apples ... oranges. Once a ball is ruled incomplete in the field of play, those who could recover it don't move to recover is because they think the play is dead.

Hence the college rule is no replay -- non reviewable.. The pros may do it differently.

9:53 PM
Blogger Miller said...

I believe that may be the 1 caveat in the rule... IF the catch is made but the official rules that his feet landed OB, thus an incomplete pass... I believe they can review that as a catch or not... because the WR would obviously be out of bounds at the spot of the (alleged) catch...

Don't quote me on that...I could be wrong.

9:53 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

I know we are not criticizing the refs but what about that penalty we got for running the play too fast or something like that? I forgot what they called it because I had never heard of it before.

9:53 PM
Blogger Jet said...

USC has given up more than 300 on the ground.

9:54 PM
Blogger j-z said...

I was confused on that as well. I thought once the ball was set and the official stepped away from it that play could start immediately.

9:56 PM
Blogger Miller said...

I heard someone say that there was a camera angle from the north endzone that was unimpeded by the players involved that clearly showed the ball touch green grass.... Apparently the tv broadcast showed 3 angles, one each from either sideline and 1 from the south endzone...

Since I was at the game, I don't know if this was true or not... just what I heard.

9:56 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

I think the difference is that the scenario y'all are describing involves a potential fumble. I understand how the ruling of incomplete stops the play there...

BTW...I am glad we don't have to play Tennessee again.

Blogger Jet said...

It's not when the umpire moves, it's when the white hat blows the whistle. He was starting to drop his hand and blow the whistle at the snap ... one second later, it wouldn't have been an issue.

If there is an obscure rule hidden somewhere deep in a dungeon and there is a play close to it Auburn will get the call against them.

FSJ I am glad we dont have to play Tennessee again either!

9:58 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Also, the umpire leaned and spoke to Pugh. I would imagine he told him not to snap until the whistle blows.

9:59 PM
Blogger Miller said...

The signal is given by the white hat... from behind the QB...
The field judge is not supposed to step away from the ball until the signal is given... All the QB has to go one visually is when the field judge steps away.

I can understand where that may have been the case (what Stan White said)... but wouldn't that be more of a delay by the refs for not having their isht together rather than on the offense? Just didn't make a lot of sense.

In a hurry up situation, they will let the umpire back out of the way before the whistle ... which I think was part of the conversation between the umpire and Pugh.

At least that's the way I did it calling HS ball.

I've seen it called 2-3 times this year ... I think the rolling play clock is helping contribute to it ... the QB see the clock rolling and he thinks he's good to go.

Evening Gang! Winning is truly very fun! War Eagle!

And I seem to recall in many games they make a point of saying that EVERY play is up for review in a college game, it's just whether or not they decide to review it. And they also make a point of saying its different from pro ball. Then again maybe I'm speakin' out ma butt.

jinkies. everyone must have crashed from their halloween candy sugar high and the AU win high.

todd's gotta start hitting those open td passes. it would be nice to get a few where the wr doesn't fall down making the catch.

i say rest FAH and get him as ready as can be for the iron bowl.

i hope marcus lattimore enjoyed his official visit. the early start, less than ideal weather and halloween definitely impacted the crowd. i guess we figured this would have been an espn night game a few weeks ago when he scheduled.

chip chip is just happy with the W.

Happy November everyone!

Wow this year has flown by.

Someone explain to me how we lost to Kentucky?

7:39 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Looking through the stats, some that jump out at me.

Opponents have gotten 22 1st downs via penalty against us.

We are averaging almost 60 yards in penalties per game.

We come out of the locker room hot, with 94 points in the 3rd quarter which is 17 more than any other quarter.

We average 3.4 yards per punt return.

Walt McFadden has 4 interceptions.

Tate is averaging 118 yards rushing per game, and 141 total yards per game.

Coleman's big game yesterday got him up to 5.5 sacks and 11 tackles for a loss.

RK ...

How? Simple. Youth. Inexperience.

Look at the season.

We killed State, who won at UK, who won at our place. Arkansas whipped us, who beat Ole Miss, who whipped Arkansas.

For the teams that aren't at the top level -- you win some games you're not expected to, and you lose some you're not expected to.

Despite the experience of some (Ziemba, Pugh, Coleman), we're not an experienced football team. I'm just elated this team didn't phone it in -- especially after giving up a 94 yard drive to start the game.

I'm not a fan of the KodiCat, but it seems to me there's a commitment there to Kodi because of his commitment and leadership to the team. We're just gonna have to deal with it.

8:22 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

It's still Kentucky at home though...

I appreciate that Kodi is a stand up guy and has said and done all the right things, but that formation gets us almost nothing every time.

8:26 AM
Blogger Kathy said...

just watched the Auburn Everyday Preview show. Kodi Burns and AC Coleman are true Auburn men. Great pieces on both of them. Coach challenged the team after the LSU lost and I think we had several step up to that challenge this week.

War Eagle!

8:33 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Even though the Wildcat formation doesn't produce as much as we would like, it definately sets up big plays later in games. Remember FAH dropped a great pass for a TD against UT and that was from Kodi. And that element is exactly what Malzahn wants for his offense.

I learned that Gus usually has something up his sleeve after our record breaking 93-yard TD pass. It was definately set up by some ineffective passes off of a similar route. I kept thinking why does he keep throwing this pass. Then he hits the long bomb and I thought ok Gus do your thing.

8:49 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The Wildcat part is fine, it's having Kodi run it that I'm not sure is the best option.

8:59 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

I just watched Auburn Everyday for the first time and I LOVE IT!

9:19 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

Having Kodi run the wildcat is painful to watch most of the time but I understand why and am alright with it. It does disrupt the momentum most of the time but I can live with that for the overall benefit to the emotions of the team.

9:22 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Who else would we get to run the Wildcat? Kodi is as tough as nails, he's not going to fumble, and he is a decent enough QB to take care of the ball in limited action.

9:25 AM
Blogger Bfoster18 said...

How many times will Tate tease his OL about taking them out to dinner? He'd better pony up and do that Golden Corral trip. He's been saying this since September.

I loved that hit Jason King made on Gandy on the opening kickoff. Great tackle!

10:19 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Big Cat,

Kodi is not a really effective runner or passer. The Wildcat is designed for a much faster more effective runner than Kodi will ever be.

Kodi's running plays are him dancing and then falling forward off balanced for 2 yards.

10:57 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Kathy,

I thought except for the breakdown on the long run the D played really well after the 1st drive.

10:58 AM

Another sloppy win wherein the offense scores a bunch....I'll talke it.

That crazy 3rd qtr is something that would historically occur in an LSU game.

11:04 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Don't get me wrong, Kodi is a good tough kid who has all shown us a lot as far as heart goes this year, I just don't feel that him running the wildcat is helping us out as much as it slows momentum.

11:04 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

That 3rd quarter deserved to be played on Halloween.

36 points combined for both teams in that quarter on some insane plays.

Then 0 points in the 4th quarter.

Blogger wtc said...

T stallworth should be and will be (nest year) runing the wildcat. That position was made for him. He is avery good player.

Always hate to see a player go down with an injury. Hope Zac recovers soon.
Was please with Slade filling in. I think he takes a better angle to the runner than Zac did.

11:58 AM

I thought it was Chris Humphries that made the opening hit on the KO. I could be wrong.

That really got the crowd going. It seemed like thye woke up right from the begining. Then OM goes throuhg our D like a hot knife through butter. i thought we were in for a long day.

Happy All Saints Day HOTTIEs!

First time all year I was able to see a game from home (had the day off) - very pleased with the results.

We're still the same team that lost to UK, which is to be expected. . .but I was struck by the team's effort yesterday. Even after that early drive by Ole Nutt, we just looked more like the team from weeks 1-5. Once we took the lead, then held the Rebs scoreless the rest of the half, I just felt like we were going to win.

Interesting that Om will now ahve to beat wither Tenn, MSU, or LSU to become bowl eligible. I guess the pollster had that one all screwed up. They were ranked #4 at one time.

The Qb from Houstn had 559 yards passing against Southern MIss. He was 44 for 54 or close to that.

1:02 PM

WTC,
That's not going to be easy for OM to achieve. UT is better than they were at the beginning of the year and so is MSU. And of course, LSU is no pushover.
