Practice No. 2
Hey everyone. Auburn's second spring practice has ended. Here's what we have learned:
- S Daren Bates will be held out of contact drills until two-a-days. He suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder during the LSU game last year. Surgery was performed in January. Bates is in shape and all, but he's lost a lot of weight because upper-body weightlifting is out. So it goes.
- TB Onterio McCalebb said he's gained 10 pounds since the Outback Bowl. It's from weightlifting. His arms look significantly bigger to me. "O-Dog" said he can feel the extra weight, but it hasn't affected his acceleration.
- McCalebb is predicting a better season in 2010 because he's not partying as much.
- Here is the current skill-position array:
- "9" (outside) -- Darvin Adams, D'Angelo Benton
- "5" (inside/tight end/utility) -- Phillip Lutzenkirchen, Blake
- "3" (inside/utility) -- Emory Blake, Kodi Burns, Jay Wisner
- "4" (tailback) -- Mario Fannin/Onterio McCalebb, Dontae Aycock
- "2" (outside) -- Terrell Zachery, Quindarius Carr
- "9" (outside) -- Darvin Adams, D'Angelo Benton
- OL Bart Eddins is running with the first team at left guard. Big Snacks Berry played that spot last season, though he's been slowed after undergoing a relatively minor knee surgery. Eddins is aiming to make that spot his own.
- Gene Chizik said it's his understanding that S Zac Etheridge will try to play this fall. I haven't spoken with Etheridge to confirm that or understand the medical risks involved.
- McCalebb is "boys" with Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen, who soon will begin his second season in the majors. They're both from Ft. Meade, Fla., and McCutchen's father was McCalebb's youth pastor.

Substance!
dos equis
Bates not practicing is disappointing, but probably not the end of the world. After he got so much playing time as a true freshman, doing it again in the fall shouldn't be a show stopper.
I just hope that he can get into the weight room prior to then. The kid is a player maker.
i love football
Miller-if you win, I will take the burger from HK. Harrison s too busy, but I am not.
if i overtake DMiller in the bracket challenge i would like a parade prior to a-day. quitstina & kirby can do the leg work for that. just throwing that out there.
How goes it this Friday afternoon? I'm beginning to smell go home time, and it is smelling good.
thanks for the updates, JGT.
Big Snacks just needs some more time to heal up.
wait, did O-dawg self predict a better season b/c he's not 'partying' as much? i find that an odd thing to say publicly.
I do too, but it's funny as heck.
I understand why you like Bates, but keep in mind that he wasn't an efficient player. He missed a lot of tackles and assignments.
I'm not saying he sucks. I'm saying he's not a superstar.
True, Scottie B. I do find that kind of strange.
Also, if FAH gained 10 pounds from last season he would still only be about 175 pounds. Add ten more and he would qualify as a small runningback.
Jay, any ideas how PPL might be used? Other than catching a few punts, he was the invisible man last season.
Bates definitely isn't a star, although he was outstanding as a freshman. I picture him as being a solid contributor and one of the kids that live up to his potential. I think his dad being a coach has helped him a lot.
The interest in PPL from various hotties baffles me. He's never done anything. All I can figure out is that they're star gazing still.
PPL is speed, just like FAH. So far we haven't really gotten to see what he can do. I am not sure why you would think him a star.
I see PPL, I think France.
Who said he was a star? I said star gazing in reference to his recruiting rankings.
He's gonna be a scout team hero this year.
Hehehe, good point wells.
I can't really say much about PPL other than his is fast, probably set the team record for quickest season ending injury, and looked indecisive returning punts. He is one of the question marks. I got the impression that he didn't fit in too well with the new system, although I am not sure why.
Oh, I didn't think he was that highly rated. Wasn't he like a 3 star? You are saying he was highly regarded. I didn't think so.
Once a kid gets to the field, you look at what he does. You may as well forget the stars once the kid is on campus. I don't see where that helps.
This has become a boring conversation about a player that has never done anything. Sorry for wondering why he is interesting.
I see no reason to think PPL will be anything more than a peripheral dude.
"McCalebb is predicting a better season in 2010 because he's not partying as much."
If only it was that easy!
Thanks Jay.
I can't see FAH being the guy at tailback. More than likely he will be the guy getting around 10 carries.
Aycock is the most interesting to me, since we know the least about what he can do.
Fannin is likely the man early, although I don't think I will ever be totally comfortable with him. He has always been too inconsistent. In a way he reminds me of Tre Smith.
Eric Smith is the other guy I think will get his carries, similar to FAH, but won't be the starter.
As for Dyer, he is just a question mark until he does something. I don't believe in relying on freshmen. Give him half a handful of snaps a game until he gets comfortable out there.
wtc- i am not too busy for a hamburger. never. Maybe Miller will do the right thing and buy us both one
These guys may run the ball this year:
Mario Fannin, Eric Smith, Onterio McCalebb, Dontae Aycock, and Michael Dyer.
I want Hamburger King.
JGT got a shout-out on "The Roundtable" here in B'ham for providing the info on Bates. The B'ham version of "The Roundtable" is now Jim Dunaway, Ryan Brown, and Lance Taylor. It's kind of an odd mix, but I've heard worse.
Can't be any worse than Taylor and Fitzsimmons were..
FSJ, I agree. They were terrible. Lance Taylor seems to be on his best behavior with D&B. He and Fitzsimmons were like a Beavis & Butthead who liked sports (except I would have liked it better if it had really been Beavis & Butthead).
I like the "Roundtable" in it's current set up. I like it much better than Finescum. The morning show is ok but Barker and complete full sentences.
He pauses constantly to say "as far as".
Been a while since I've seen the walmartian post so often.
You think I'm made of $$? I can't buy everyone HK...
I liked when Barker was doing the Forklift Systems commercials and couldn't even pronounce forklift. He always said "fort-lit".
Come to think of it, he can't even pronounce "Alabama". He says "Uh-lamb-uh".
"Roll Chevy Roll"
I'm glad he's pimping Toyota or some other brand now. I got tired of Barker's Chevy commercials on the television.
Barker's college girlfriend and his eventual first wife lived in my apartment complex at UA.
I had an accounting class with him too. He showed up on four days.....test days.
As much as I'd like more of an AU presence on the radio here in B'ham, I still think Frank Sanders is awful. With that said, I'd still vote for him to replace Finebaum. Of course, I'd vote for static to replace Finebaum.
I'd also vote for static or perhaps fingernails on a chalkboard to replace Eli Gold's Ford commercials.
I had no idea FAH was from ft meade. Thats in my district I am working in.
Hahaha, maybe there is a benefit to living in South Carolina. No Finebaum on the radio and I never hear Eli Gold commercials.
Eli Gold is a jerk. I'm not a fan of his...at all.
Careful FSJ, you may get banned from the Red Elephant club.
finally, something we can all agree on FSJ!!!!!
The Thunderbirds are practicing over downtown Montgomery this afternoon. The Maxwell air show is tomorrow.
They are interfering with my work, and I appreciate it.
Eli Gold can bench press 300 lbs.
every time he rolls himself out of bed MJT.
Does he has a bench press set up right next to his bed? That is dedication right there.
Michael, do I get paid to correct your grammar too?
I doubt it..
I will pay you for that with a bitw oy my HK burger from Miller
bite of...whatever
I could eat the heck out of a HK burger right about now. I'm hungry. So D Miller is buying for everyone?
HK? I've been there.
Not everybody, but I am sure he would include you
Is the ommission of E. Smith on the position chart a mistake? Or is he at the mystery position?
Don't know when I'll be in the Gump again, but I gotta try the HK. Done herd too much about it.
Kristina, if you ever point out an obscure grammar mistake of mine again, I will... kick my trash can or something!!!!
i kicked our trash can once, now we have a dented trash can
Didn't Jack Daniels die because he kicked a safe?
Someone puh-leese help "O-Dawg" understand what not to say to the press.
Homer ...Chizik's not gonna go all "Urban" on ya for printing quotes accurately is he?
Glad to see Eddins doing well. If he can stay healthy maybe we'll see some of his highly touted HS 4-star stuff.
If I remember correctly PPL ran a 4.25 40 in HS. The Hotties fell in love with that possibility prior to the 2008 season and some haven't let go.
Adams-Benton @ WR. If Benton lives up to hype, we'll be awesome at that position.
In HS, I kicked a bucket, got an internally infected big toe and had to get antibiotics. Doc said this was more common than folks realized.
I'm ashamed to say that I kicked something after the 2003 UT 4th and 19 game.
In fact, thinking about it makes me want to kick something again.
Tony Barnhart got onto Meyer inhis blog yesterday for Meyer's latest antics. It's a good read.
FSJ ...I've always heard Bama fans kick their dogs after a loss. Was that what happened?
It's 4:40 pm in the EDT and I've worked until 11 pm most nights this week. Time to go do some weekend.
Later ..Hot Ones.
I'm with you Hoopie... I worked until midnight last night myself.
I'm on my own for the next 5 days. Should be interesting.
Dodgeball tomorrow, Indy Car race Sunday. After that, who knows.
Ecuadors in the hizzy...
Here's my wish for 2010 Auburn Football. No fake punt plays involving O-Dawg. The End.
all this burger talk makes me want a king burger from Bob Qui Qui
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZkdcYlOn5M
enjoy
I love this word a day thing. I just found out that I am impecunious(habitually without money; poor).
At least not when we have a big lead in a meaningless game.
PF,
Where is this dodgeball league and how would one get involved in such?
Impecunious, huh? Was my picture next to that word?
Tom,
Without all the partying, I bet he picks up the first down.
I just read on another site that Darren Bates will be kept out of "contract drills." I am not familiar with those.
How true Peter, how very true.
Miller,
It's just a one day tournament that the Young Lawyers Assoc. and Young Professionals Assoc. put on together down here.
Did Ontario McIrishman's partying cause the coaching staff to call that fake punt against Miss St?
short answer: yes
Of course it did. It is Puppet Hour after all. AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!
remember when Dave Chappelle did the std puppet skit on his show? Were those evil puppets because they sure were funny
You know who else was really funny? Hitler. That's who. Being the bees knees when it comes to making others laugh does not mean you are good.
Weird, I don't remember Hitler being all that funny.
so that funny mustache he had was to make people laugh?
Exactly Harrison. It was his mustache, knack for physical humor, and comic timing that let him rise to the top. History books like to gloss over this stuff.
Kind of like Sigmund Freud's love for basketball. History books never mention that either.
I hate gloss, and have no need for books, so I don't fall into the same traps when recounting history.
I'm offended.
so Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure could be viewed as closer to real history. Napoleon was hilarious when he at all that ice cream
I wish quitstina were here to let me know who was joking.
Freud also lost an arm wrestling match against a Chimpanzee one time at a carnival. Not really historically relevant, but once again, conveniently left out of history books.
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure was used by Tom Papaldi to decipher the true translations to Egyptian hieroglyphics. The Rosetta Stone was a bunch of BS.
Once again, history books.
i thought Michael Phelps found the Rosetta Stone
So all the stuff about the Louisiana Purchase - is that the real story?
Are you talking about the time Les Miles bought rogaine at a Louisiana Walgreens? No that's true.
Michael Phelps has large ears.
I am telling you, the Rosetta Stone is BS. You'll find that King Tut's mummy casket didn't actually read "King Tutankhamun, God Among Men". When you use the Papaldi dictionary, it actually reads "Bird Nacho Swingset Catnub Breath"
catnub.
catnub= what happens when my wife's cats crash in Michael's shoddily built helicopter
According to Papaldi, there is an old Egyptian adage found throughout the ancient civilization's writings: "For every Catnub, there is a liberated Catlimb. Pepperoni slug stone." So you know, not all is lost.
Thanks, Qiutsteena!
Keep the dream alive! Don't let the Hitlers of this world make you laugh! It only encourages them.
MJT is OUT!
I think you're getting Hitler and Charlie Chaplin confused. But knowing Michael, probably not.
Agent Zero stays out of jail.
Jay, any info on a couple of players not mentioned: Eric Smith and Travante Stallworth.
PF mentioned that Anthony Gulley Morgan might be working with the secondary. Is that the case?
An interesting day on HABOTN as always.
SteveFC,
You lie.
I said simply "defense."
I might have even just said D.
...and I referenced Andy Bitter for providing that. I know you trust AB.
Anybody going to the baseball game tonight?
PF, grow up.
Which word are you having problems with?
The ones where someone who has a habit of calling me names and resorting to personal attacks simply because he doesn't get my humor and can't keep up is telling me to grow up. Can you explain what you mean by those words?
JayG, nice article on the 25th about the first practice. Just now got a chance to read it. Seems like Newton will have some work to do in the next couple of weeks to get the offense down.
I do not have time to tutor you at the moment, but I am sure someone can explain to you what grow up means.
At the same time, someone can explain the difference between a misquote and a lie to you. As in, if you say someone lied, when in fact they misquoted you, then that would mean you are the liar.
I do not bring up disparaging things about you unless prompt by things such as your previous childish comment.
I do hope someone has time to tutor you, but I do not and you couldn't afford it if I did.
Dude, I was kidding. You've thrown out that "You Lie" comment at me multiple times for three reasons: I was being sarcastic and you didn't get it, I misquoted a detail very similar to the one above, or you either didn't remember saying something or didn"t like being called on it, so you accused me of lying, even though I was right.
Do you really think your maturity is that superior? I find that hillarious. You make the HABOTN funny. Thanks.
you guys are silly
You have lied blatantly in the past and again today. Yes, it is funny and I have been laughing at you for a long time, so in a way I suppose I do get the kiddie humor.
You requested an explanation and now you have it.
ladies...chill
Ha. Fine. Every time you have accused me I've either backed it up with specific quotes or had to explain the joke. Not once have you successfully rebutted my proof. I rarely get personal, but I'm going to today.Your memory is fading, your reading comprehension is elementary at best, and your sense of humor is weak. Get over yourself.
What time is first pitch tonight?
Hahaha, again reality just flies right over your head. Did I ask you for your opinion of me? No. Did you give it? Yes. Did you lie again? Yes. Am I college educated and old enough to be your father. Yes. Do I value your opinion? No. But continue to lie and provide more proof of what I am saying.
Hmmm. I don't remember mentioning your age or education, trumping up the value of my opinion, or asking permission to give my opinion...I'll go back and read again to figure out if you're replying or just being grumpy.
Hahaha, yea, go ahead.
Sometimes age and education mean nothing... especially when you act like you have neither.
Very true.
Miller, are you talking about me?
No one in particular... just stating a fact...
I feel attacked. I thought we were friends.
First pitch 6:30pm central
Auburn down 3-0 already with 1 out in the first. Two singles and a homerun.
Auburn gets 2 runs back, down 3-2 after 1 inning.
Hopefully Corey Luckie found some zen in the dugout and will come back out strong.
South Carolina's bats are hot.
Yikes. Luckie got chased in the second after giving up 2 more home runs and some hits. USC 8 Auburn 2, still top of 2nd.
God I hate it when everyone's cycles get synced up.
Overheard and U9 soccer tonight: "Coach j-z, I don't think playing defense is going to "work for me" during the games. I need to be up front where people can see me."
Me:"Does running laps work for you?"
him:"No, why?"
Me:"Let me know after you run a couple."
Many laps later:"You know Coach, this defense thing ain't all that bad."
j-z, LMAO !

UT game is pretty good tonight.
Yeah, they're only down 3-2 @ LSU in the 7th.
76-73 UT wins
Time for Duke to lose....
I think the only coach that might have made me happier than Barbee... is Baylor's Scott Drew. The guy is just good.
But no way would he have left Baylor for AU... it just wouldn't have happened.
Bruce Pearl is a wonderful coach.
Goofy, but a heckuva coach.
I have no desire to watch Duke. I wish I could watch The other game.
I think PF and SFC need to be locked in a closet together for a few hours. That or lets just go ahead and take bets and do this thing at A-Day

nevermind - I got it.

SC-11
AU-5
AU played awful in ever aspect.
Has anyone been watching Barbee on CBS College Sports tonight?
Wow... Dook can't catch a break...
I like it!!
Dear Leader, don't you have some South Koreans to torpedo?
PF is a hoot. I have no problem with him. If lovin him is wrong, I don't want to be right. I understand him.
Here is an article that will make you say duh. Notice the date.
And you to love where FireGeneChizik.com will take you. Apparently we have the Crimson Slide scared.
24+ hours later, we're home. Yippee! I'm so tired I got confused on my time zones and woke 2.0 up at 4:20 a.m.
Thanks for that great practice report today, Beat Hack Tate. That's the kind of substance that is greatly appreciated.
Jet-I see where you have one team left in the tourney. You were surely going for the upset special weren't you?
Jet might win the most pitiful bracket award
Just got home and looked at the scores. My bracket is DONE.
Rise and shine, Hotties!
WARRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
Go BAYLOR BEARS!!!!
what a coincidence. I'm a huge BAYLOR BEAR fan, too!!!
;-)
I guess all the other Hotties can't watch Clark Howard and HABOTN at the same time.
Good morning Tar Heel. Nothing like a 4:30 a.m. call that one of your apartments are flooding.
Sanjay Gupta is explaining the specifics of the health care bill on CNN. I'm surprised to actually hear the nuts and bolts without (much) politics, finally. It's almost interesting. Of course, this discussion won't include the global effects....
I had a strange dream that I was laying in bed talking to a girl I knew in high school that I haven't talked to or thought about in probably 10 years. Her mom had died a while back, and I was just finding out. I don't know why we were in bed together. I woke up confused. This was 4:30 am. My wife got up at 5. I was planning on sleeping in today. Grrrrr.
PF - you don't want to waste weekends sleeping. You want to be awake to be able to enjoy not having to go to work.
True, THT. That's why I'm on my way to play dodgeball. Nothing like throwing stuff at lawyers with no recourse to start your weekend.
Didn't know there was a Clark Howard contingent on the HABOTN.
What a beautiful morning in North Alabama. Got to get all of my outdoor chores completed today. Rain moves back in tonight.
TN played a good game last night. I do like Pearl.
MrsTHT likes pearls, too.
Today may be Molly dog's last :-(
We have tried to keep her going until 2.0 got home next month, but I don't think that's going to happen. We've adored Molly for over 16 years.
THT, I'm so sorry to hear about Molly. Prayers to all of you. I know she is family and dear to you all.
Sorry to hear about Molly Dog, THT... dog's really do become another family member.
Sorry to hear about Molly, THT. Our last dog died at 14. It was a sad day. I know 2.0 is sad that she can't tell her goodbye in person.
Thank y'all for your kind thoughts. I'd especially appreciate Hottie prayers for safe travels for 2.0 during the next 3+ weeks as she meanders (solo) around Europe.
THT ...I hate that about Molly for you. It's not an easy choice, but is sometimes necessary. This time last year, we faced the same choice.
I have volunteered my bracket to serve as confetti at the championship game.
Got some meetings. You kids play nice.
Prayers for 2.0. I wish I had the guts to travel solo across Europe in my younger days. What a wonderful experience.
THT, I hate to hear about that.
Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and prayers, everything went well and dad is out of the hospital. He goes back on May 10th (coincidently my wedding anniversary) for a PET scan and that will determine if they got everything or not.
WERK - your father will definitely be in our prayers.
I love the Hottie family.
WERK...prayers for your father and your family
I just went to Texas Tech's site.
I looked at some pics of Tubs' first couple of spring practices. He just doesn't look right in black and red to me.
Oh, THT, I am so sorry about your Molly. I remember when we had to do the same thing with our Molly, very sad day.
Praying for 2.0 to have a safe and wonderful time!
WERK, also praying for your dad. Hopefully the PET scan will show all clear.
WERK, prayers for a clear PET.
Out for the day running errands with the family. Have a wonderful Saturday Hotties.
Prayers for a safe trip for 2.0
Sorry to hear about Molly dog we had to do the same to our Yorky a few years back.
WERK glad to hear your dad is doing well and hope the PET comes out good.
"It is mandatory that we grow old but optional that we grow wiser."
nuff said.
RK...good to hear about your Dad's surgery going well. Now thoughts and prayers for the right results.
THT...my sympathies for Molly and prayers for 2.0's safe travels.
Somebody page norm
or better yet
don't.
I'll do this
myself...
Boom
We have an illegal flip on Faker. The penalty is five posts from the end of the flip.
Sorry to hear about Molly, THT. A dog does truly become one of the family. My dog Scooby is my partner. We do a pretty good job taking care of each other.
