Practice No. 2

Hey everyone. Auburn's second spring practice has ended. Here's what we have learned:

  • S Daren Bates will be held out of contact drills until two-a-days. He suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder during the LSU game last year. Surgery was performed in January. Bates is in shape and all, but he's lost a lot of weight because upper-body weightlifting is out. So it goes.

  • TB Onterio McCalebb said he's gained 10 pounds since the Outback Bowl. It's from weightlifting. His arms look significantly bigger to me. "O-Dog" said he can feel the extra weight, but it hasn't affected his acceleration.

  • McCalebb is predicting a better season in 2010 because he's not partying as much.

  • Here is the current skill-position array:
    • "9" (outside) -- Darvin Adams, D'Angelo Benton
    • "5" (inside/tight end/utility) -- Phillip Lutzenkirchen, Blake
    • "3" (inside/utility) -- Emory Blake, Kodi Burns, Jay Wisner
    • "4" (tailback) -- Mario Fannin/Onterio McCalebb, Dontae Aycock
    • "2" (outside) -- Terrell Zachery, Quindarius Carr

  • OL Bart Eddins is running with the first team at left guard. Big Snacks Berry played that spot last season, though he's been slowed after undergoing a relatively minor knee surgery. Eddins is aiming to make that spot his own.

  • Gene Chizik said it's his understanding that S Zac Etheridge will try to play this fall. I haven't spoken with Etheridge to confirm that or understand the medical risks involved.

  • McCalebb is "boys" with Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen, who soon will begin his second season in the majors. They're both from Ft. Meade, Fla., and McCutchen's father was McCalebb's youth pastor.

Bates not practicing is disappointing, but probably not the end of the world. After he got so much playing time as a true freshman, doing it again in the fall shouldn't be a show stopper.

I just hope that he can get into the weight room prior to then. The kid is a player maker.

I do too, but it's funny as heck.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I understand why you like Bates, but keep in mind that he wasn't an efficient player. He missed a lot of tackles and assignments.

I'm not saying he sucks. I'm saying he's not a superstar.

1:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

True, Scottie B. I do find that kind of strange.

Also, if FAH gained 10 pounds from last season he would still only be about 175 pounds. Add ten more and he would qualify as a small runningback.

Jay, any ideas how PPL might be used? Other than catching a few punts, he was the invisible man last season.

1:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Bates definitely isn't a star, although he was outstanding as a freshman. I picture him as being a solid contributor and one of the kids that live up to his potential. I think his dad being a coach has helped him a lot.

1:03 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

The interest in PPL from various hotties baffles me. He's never done anything. All I can figure out is that they're star gazing still.

1:04 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

PPL is speed, just like FAH. So far we haven't really gotten to see what he can do. I am not sure why you would think him a star.

1:06 PM
Blogger wellsAU said...

I see PPL, I think France.

1:08 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Who said he was a star? I said star gazing in reference to his recruiting rankings.

He's gonna be a scout team hero this year.

1:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hehehe, good point wells.

I can't really say much about PPL other than his is fast, probably set the team record for quickest season ending injury, and looked indecisive returning punts. He is one of the question marks. I got the impression that he didn't fit in too well with the new system, although I am not sure why.

1:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Oh, I didn't think he was that highly rated. Wasn't he like a 3 star? You are saying he was highly regarded. I didn't think so.

Once a kid gets to the field, you look at what he does. You may as well forget the stars once the kid is on campus. I don't see where that helps.

1:15 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

This has become a boring conversation about a player that has never done anything. Sorry for wondering why he is interesting.

I can't see FAH being the guy at tailback. More than likely he will be the guy getting around 10 carries.

Aycock is the most interesting to me, since we know the least about what he can do.

Fannin is likely the man early, although I don't think I will ever be totally comfortable with him. He has always been too inconsistent. In a way he reminds me of Tre Smith.

Eric Smith is the other guy I think will get his carries, similar to FAH, but won't be the starter.

As for Dyer, he is just a question mark until he does something. I don't believe in relying on freshmen. Give him half a handful of snaps a game until he gets comfortable out there.

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure was used by Tom Papaldi to decipher the true translations to Egyptian hieroglyphics. The Rosetta Stone was a bunch of BS.

4:39 PM
Blogger michael said...

Michael Phelps has large ears.

I am telling you, the Rosetta Stone is BS. You'll find that King Tut's mummy casket didn't actually read "King Tutankhamun, God Among Men". When you use the Papaldi dictionary, it actually reads "Bird Nacho Swingset Catnub Breath"

4:40 PM

catnub.

4:44 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

catnub= what happens when my wife's cats crash in Michael's shoddily built helicopter

5:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I do not have time to tutor you at the moment, but I am sure someone can explain to you what grow up means.

At the same time, someone can explain the difference between a misquote and a lie to you. As in, if you say someone lied, when in fact they misquoted you, then that would mean you are the liar.

I do not bring up disparaging things about you unless prompt by things such as your previous childish comment.

I do hope someone has time to tutor you, but I do not and you couldn't afford it if I did.

5:43 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Dude, I was kidding. You've thrown out that "You Lie" comment at me multiple times for three reasons: I was being sarcastic and you didn't get it, I misquoted a detail very similar to the one above, or you either didn't remember saying something or didn"t like being called on it, so you accused me of lying, even though I was right.

I guess all the other Hotties can't watch Clark Howard and HABOTN at the same time.

Good morning Tar Heel. Nothing like a 4:30 a.m. call that one of your apartments are flooding.

Sanjay Gupta is explaining the specifics of the health care bill on CNN. I'm surprised to actually hear the nuts and bolts without (much) politics, finally. It's almost interesting. Of course, this discussion won't include the global effects....

I had a strange dream that I was laying in bed talking to a girl I knew in high school that I haven't talked to or thought about in probably 10 years. Her mom had died a while back, and I was just finding out. I don't know why we were in bed together. I woke up confused. This was 4:30 am. My wife got up at 5. I was planning on sleeping in today. Grrrrr.

PF - you don't want to waste weekends sleeping. You want to be awake to be able to enjoy not having to go to work.

True, THT. That's why I'm on my way to play dodgeball. Nothing like throwing stuff at lawyers with no recourse to start your weekend.

Didn't know there was a Clark Howard contingent on the HABOTN.

What a beautiful morning in North Alabama. Got to get all of my outdoor chores completed today. Rain moves back in tonight.

TN played a good game last night. I do like Pearl.

MrsTHT likes pearls, too.

Today may be Molly dog's last :-(
We have tried to keep her going until 2.0 got home next month, but I don't think that's going to happen. We've adored Molly for over 16 years.

THT, I'm so sorry to hear about Molly. Prayers to all of you. I know she is family and dear to you all.

Sorry to hear about Molly, THT. Our last dog died at 14. It was a sad day. I know 2.0 is sad that she can't tell her goodbye in person.

Thank y'all for your kind thoughts. I'd especially appreciate Hottie prayers for safe travels for 2.0 during the next 3+ weeks as she meanders (solo) around Europe.

THT ...I hate that about Molly for you. It's not an easy choice, but is sometimes necessary. This time last year, we faced the same choice.

I have volunteered my bracket to serve as confetti at the championship game.

Got some meetings. You kids play nice.

Prayers for 2.0. I wish I had the guts to travel solo across Europe in my younger days. What a wonderful experience.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and prayers, everything went well and dad is out of the hospital. He goes back on May 10th (coincidently my wedding anniversary) for a PET scan and that will determine if they got everything or not.

I just went to Texas Tech's site.

I looked at some pics of Tubs' first couple of spring practices. He just doesn't look right in black and red to me.

Oh, THT, I am so sorry about your Molly. I remember when we had to do the same thing with our Molly, very sad day.

Praying for 2.0 to have a safe and wonderful time!

WERK, also praying for your dad. Hopefully the PET scan will show all clear.

Sorry to hear about Molly, THT. A dog does truly become one of the family. My dog Scooby is my partner. We do a pretty good job taking care of each other.
