Aycock had already been redshirted and he would have played this year. We now definitely have issues with runningback depth, but my guess is there are players that could switch positions if needed. We will have something like 4 runningbacks, which is pretty scary if the injury bug hits.

11:10 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

With Supermario and FAH already shown a tendency to get banged up, we could be left with Eric Smith and Michael Dyer to carry the load. Not a good situation.

11:12 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Of course, there is Ladarius Phillips coming in. A 270 pound runningback would be interesting for a while.

11:14 AM
Blogger wtc said...

Aycock did not look good in the sprin game. VEYR timid. I was surprised how soft he ran the ball. Thta is not why he was dismissed, but still I think he was not going to figure in into much playing time. I thought with Fannin, Dyer, FAH at Tb and ESmith and Lutz at Hback, he was not getting on the field this coming year unless there were some injuries. But IMO Dyer will be the cow bell by mid season. Remeber, he is not 18 years old. More like 20. big difference.

11:15 AM
Blogger wtc said...

Some hot ones are lunching at Momma G's today. We may live blog a little of it.

11:16 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, Aycock was probably the least likely to play, other than Phillips, but 4 runningbacks is a depth issue if we play two at a time. If Malzahn uses other players in the h-back role, then it is not nearly as big of an issue.

11:19 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Or maybe we see Kodi Burns, the runningback.

11:23 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am seeing comment on al.com that this opens up the way for Dyer to get playing time. Bull hockey. There is no way Dyer was getting redshirted unless he was injured.

11:29 AM
Blogger API said...

OK, I'm not a coarch, but I was expecting big things for Dontae this year, especially early. Whatever it was, it must of been pretty bad to get cut loose. Wonder if Tech would be interested to have him now?

11:31 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Hate that Aycock is gone, but such is life. I wish him well. I concur with WTC that he did look timid in the A-Day game.

He would be wise to go I-AA for the rest of his career or juco for a year then re-emerge for two years a la Chris Todd/Cam Newton.

It thins us at RB some, but it just reinforces that Dyer will be playing and playing a lot soon. Was likely to happen anyway.

Cam was timid in the Spring Game.

12:09 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am thinking Cam will be fine once he gets a few games under his belt. Playing Arkansas State first should help.

The MSU game worries me because I expect them to improve and if we start slow, we could end up getting upset.

Under Tuberville we usually took a few games to start clicking offensively. Last season was different. We clicked from the get go. I hope that is how it will stay with ChizCo.

12:18 PM
Blogger CHB said...

I think we will be fine at RB. We have several players that have come in with the ATH tag. They could play the HB role. I think some people overlook Eric Smith. I think he is very valuable and will play a big role this year. DA wasn't going to play much if at all. Best wishes.

WTC, I asked last night about a possible donation towards a 100yd indoor practice facility. Do you know anything about this?

12:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The concern at running back won't be the starter or the backup. It will be depth should we get a few injuries.

In general, at each position you should have 3 or 4 times the number of players that play that position on the depth chart. For instance, 3 or 4 QBs since only 1 is on the field at once, but 6 to 8 runningbacks since we typically use two, although it is a little blurred with the h-back and TE. We are now setting at 4, which is a big concern.

The other thing is the number of plays we run. Malzahn wants to run over 80 plays a game. With that many plays it would be easy to have two tailbacks with 20 carries each. Suddenly 4 seems like a very small number when you consider the possibility of injury.

That being said, the use of the TE in the HB role and possible other players switching positions should help. It is weird to say, but we are absolutely loaded with wide receivers, so there is potential there.

Hatin' on Bama is a good use of time during the summer doldrums.

Maybe we can get Jet to post his Bama Hatin' Manifesto just to inspire some of the newbies.

12:41 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

We were very lucky last season that we didn't significant have OL or Lb injuries. That could have cost us several games.

The situation at those positions is not AS critical this season, but could still be an issue. Can we avoid injuries at those positions 2 seasons in a row?

if this has been discussed i totally missed it, but did anybody see COLLEGE FOOTBALL LIVE on ESPN yesterday? i had it dvr'd and they went in-depth on USC possibly losing its 2004 title b/c of the Reggie Bush violations. they were adamant that the AP should re-vote and AU be named 2004 AP National Champions. i was shocked they were so pro-Auburn.

I still think we are going to be fine this year. I think 10-2 is a real possibility.

12:50 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

wow Secondaid, we must be on the same frequency or something.

they said if they were AU and got the title they'd celebrate, put up a banner, the whole deal. the BCS would vacate the champion and not have one but the AP could re-vote just like they did a few weeks back on another issue.

12:51 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It won't mean diddley if we claim the 2004 NC. It just doesn't matter.

12:55 PM

I think it was last week that I said we should claim it. It wouldn't be like some of the walmartians' or ND's MNC where they lost their bowl game and still claimed the title.

if we can hang a banner & print t-shirts it matters to me. the announcers said that a title 6 years later probably wouldn't mean as much to the players, but the administration, fans, town, etc. should go all out & enjoy it b/c going undefeated in the SEC is so difficult.

12:58 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The undefeated season and spanking UT twice is what mattered to me.

1:00 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I would take a flag hanging up in the stadium saying 2004 national champs.

That said, it sounds like a really flawed system if you can vote on a national champion six years after the fact.

1:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

We should go back and claim a few championships from Donahue's undefeated teams.

1:08 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

the NCAA flawed? say it isn't so E-bro! haha, that rhymed.

the ESPN guys were saying that since the AP re-voted on another issue (i can't remember what it was for) that there is a precedent and if that if USC was stripped by the BCS of their title that the AP could do the same things & re-vote. they said they would not vote for Oklahoma since they got spanked and so we would be the logical choice to be #1. they were insistent that USC needed to pay some kind of price for this cheating. why punish the kids that play there now? taking UCS's 2004 title & Heisman from them were what they wanted done.

I was watching the ESPN 2:30 CDT program and was amazed at the support for Auburn except for one guy. I thought Rod Gilmore's argument was horrible. He said it didn't matter if Bush was paid or not, it didn't change what an excellent player he was that season and USC won their games.

Well it does matter if he was paid, because that excellent player wouldn't have been on the field.

I also found it ironic that Craig James was on there hitting USC hard about violations when he was on the only team to ever get the death penalty.

1:17 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

yup, Bush is a cheater. therefore, USC cheated. if they hadn't cheated they wouldn't have won. AU would've beaten OU for the title.

there, i said it.

I want to see Auburn win football games. I would love to see Auburn win the SECCG or the BSCG. Titles don't do it for me. Watching great football games does. While some of you stare at championship banners, I will be watching the games.

As for Oklahoma, they were not that good in 2004 and many recognized it before USC humiliated them. I think it was a bad Texas A&M team that nearly beat them. It came down to a field goal, if I remember correctly.

1:29 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't know if Auburn would have beaten USC in 2004, but I do believe there were numerous teams that would have beaten Oklahoma.

1:30 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Like I said, I'll take the banner if it is given out. Not gonna go out and buy a shirt (sorry Scottie) that says 2004 national champs, but I'll accept some official recognition.

Someone could probably even talk me into being down with receiving a replica crystal ball.

1:32 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

1:34 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

sorry Okie Norm. i'll stay away from that fightin' side of ya.

and E-Bro, i'll be chillin' in my t-shirt, looking up at the banner from my seats in Section 12, Row 11 with a big smile on my face! :)

1:35 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

And while I don't count every season without a championship a failure, I do want to be winning them and think we should strive for that on the field. I've got no problem admitting that.

1:36 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Well you should, scottie. Well you should.

1:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I actually consider Oklahoma getting to the BSNC in 2004 a bigger injustice than Auburn not making it. It just illustrates that absurd world of college football.

As for Bush getting paid not mattering, that is a bunch of crap. Heck, lets bring Ronnie Brown and Caddy back and let them play another season. Why would it matter?

1:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Plus, let Tracy Rocker get in on a few snaps here and there. What would it matter?

If you don't play by the rules, there is no way you should be considered for any championship.

1:40 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I say let the beer flow and let the banner be unfurled. I think it's a great honor to a great team that was swept under the rug by the PTB.

I'm taking the championship and buying the shirt. Just because we were jobbed out of celebrating then doesn't mean I can't celebrate now. Also, it would be nice that we would become the state's latest team to win a NC.

Jet- You would vehemently oppose a blood transfusion if it meant saving your life because of the color of the blood.

1:49 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

More than likely what will happen is that the current USC coaches and players will be punished. What does it matter who is punished, as long as someone is punished. Such is the world of the NCAA.

1:51 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I would not be in favor of claiming retroactive championships.

Thanks to the actions of the inbred, ignorant, arrogant and embarrassing entity over in W Vance, I'm even more firm in this opinion.

1:51 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

When does the NCAA release the punishment?

1:51 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

It's not retroactive based on a new formula. For the AP the formula is the same, the team that was awarded were awarded based on assumptions which might end up being invalid. If they go back and use the same methodology and Auburn were chosen it is not retroactive as much as it is six years too late.

1:53 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Once again, letting the bamers dictate what you do is them controlling you. Us getting the championship this way is simply undoing an injustice, not reaching from the stars to improve our media guide.
