As seen at ESPN.com ...

Hey everyone. I'm in Kentucky this week for an allegedly relaxing week off before we start getting cranked up for Media Days, though some really sweet World Cup action will fray my nerves.

I hope you know about my little World Cup venture: Gannett World Cup.

So why am I writing this post? Oh, yes. "News."

Chris Low, a righteous dude who blogs for ESPN.com, today posted a list indicating how many national titles (in all sports) owned by each of the Southeastern Conference men's programs.

His source is the SEC office.

Within that countdown, I came across this:
Auburn: 9
* Eight in swimming (1997, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009), one in football (1957).

Alabama: 8
* Eight in football (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009).
Thoughts:

a.) Wow.

b.) Finally -- someone recognizes the correct number of titles at Alabama.

I can see it now. There will be tons of Alabama fans with thirteen tattoos lined up to get a line drawn through it and the number 9 added beside it. Oh the humanity. Lets just hope it isn't done at Walmart.

This isn't a number Low decided upon, it's the number that the SEC recognizes. The NCAA recognizes something stupid like 18 or 19 (we have 7 or 8, I believe), the school claims 13 as we all know, and the SEC recognizes 8. I knew I liked this conference.

Ummm, I just read a Sports Illustrated article that listed Cam Newton as a sleeper for the Heisman. Wow!!! A QB that has basically played in one drive of FBS football a possible Heisman winner. Don't look now, but in a few years they will be naming high school juniors to Heisman watch lists. Some sportswriters are insane.

Just one question on CL's column for you conference experts: How long has the SEC been in existence? Were AU and Bammer in it from the beginning?

7:45 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

let's see, the 75th anniversary of the SEC was in 2007. so, what's that make it, 1932 when the SEC started?

yes, AU & UA were members from the get-go.

In 1932, Georgia Tech and Georgia were two of the original 13 charter members of the Southeastern Conference.

Georgia Tech would continue its membership until 1964 after Tech Coach Bobby Dodd began a historic feud with Alabama Coach Bear Bryant. Georgia Tech left the SEC concerning the allocation of scholarships and student athlete treatment.

Georgia Tech would later attempt re-entry but the re-entry was eventually voted down. The biggest opponent of Georgia Tech's re-entry was Georgia.

Wake, i did a mini triathlon back in college. i kinda gave up the road bike thing about being blown off the road a few times by 18-wheelers. scared me to death. if i could just ride without having to dodge cars i wouldn't have stopped.

Just a local sprint tri.

15 mile bike=not to bad
5k run=no problem
1/4 mile swim=crap I don't swim

Stacking them on top of each other should make for quite the experience. I'll find out if its something I want to pursue going forward or not.

I hate that the run is last, that is definitely my strong point (not that its all that stront, but comparably speaking). But I"m sure I'll be dead by that point.

Like I said... an experience.

As a Braves fan, I LOVE this. Bobby Bonilla gets 1.2 mil a year for the next 25 years from the Mets because he deferred 5.9 mil in salary from a buyout.

You know, watching the Mets is like going to a small town Wal-Mart, I don't care how bad things are in your life, you will see some loser(s) that instantly make you feel better about yourself.

The only thing I could think of that would be better is if the words Mets was replaced with Bama, and Bobby Bonilla was replaced with Mike Shula.

Glad for the Tour deFrance to start. Now you can see what athletes that take steroids and lie about it can do on a bike.

my pool was green with algae starting on Monday and looked like a pond by Friday AM. Wife called 'a guy' and he said to drain 1/3 of the water off to lower the salt content. after she did that, we took a sample to the pool store. They sold us about $140 worth of chemicals (most I have spent on this pool in the 6 years I have had it) and the algea is gone this AM. I had to fill the pool back up for flippin' 8 hours yesterday and last night. I still cannot figure out what draining the thing down was going to do. now I have to vacuum the algea out and that will drop the level again. Then I have to fill'er back up. Bottom line is a rag tag Auburn football team carried UAT's team to the wire in the '09 IB. With a year's experience, I believe Auburn will rock in '10.

2:08 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

easy, we didn't loose a lot of players to graduation, but we lost key players like Todd and Tate. There is a good chance the QB position will be significantly improved. The RB position is a lot less certain.

That being said, when you look at the defense and special teams, it would be hard for them not to be improved.

That to me does say an improved 2010 season. Throw in that the players on offense now that have a year in Malzahn's system and it is easy to get very excited about this season.

Replacing skill position players on offense is always risky. QB and TB are the two high profile positions because they have the potential to influence the outcome of a game the most. Mistakes can kill you, so lack of experience there is a concern.

Brandon Cox is the best example of this. Most of the time he was great, and at one point many wanted him to replace Jason Campbell. But when Cox had a bad game, he was the worst QB I believe we have had at Auburn this century. It is those type of performances you worry about with new starters.

2:19 PM
Blogger easyedwin said...

Fannin is experienced and will prolly start. Cam will give us the ability to RUN at the QB position. He is not the Damien Craig type. He is much larger and more difficult to bring down. If we improve the D by 30% it will be awesome.

3:55 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

The Braves won 4-1 they are getting me hooked again.
It is easy to get over excited for Auburn football but we should temper that with some caution. The potential is there for an excellent season but the unknowns are strong enough to say let's wait and see.

The arrest report mentioned red panties on his lap? The PoPo sure didn't do him any favors. This sets up another battle between the UGA old boyz and Michael Adams. The state of Ga. has one Board of Regents that handles all state schools so Adams job is safe, but the AD will probably have to go.

Chores successfully completed in for the in-laws in So Miss: Hired a carpenter to replace rotten facia on the boathouse and detached garage, Hired a tree surgeon to remove dead trees, Limbed up trees, weed ate the weeds, sprayed roundup, blew off the driveways and walkways, Fixed a trolling motor, cleaned out the boathouse and wood working shop and threw away a pickup truck load of crap, grilled-shrimp-Conecuh sausage and asparagus for a group of 14 on Friday night.

I got 2 more days of this stuff, then can't wait to get home and rest.

2007 - Blake Field
2006 - Brandon Cox
2005 - Blake Field (Technically Courtney Taylor but he only threw one pass)
2004 - Brandon Cox (Technically Carnell Williams but he only threw one pass)

Happy 4th of July Hotties.

I was supposed to run the Peachtree Road Race 10K this morning but have been battling a sinus infection for a few days and didn't sleep worth a flip. So, to church with the family I go.
