Media Days: SOUTH CAROLINA
The coach is Steve Spurrier.
- Can you believe he's still here? Not that he'd be fired. I'm talking about him throwing up his hands after all these losses, taking his money and heading for the links.
- He opens by saying their academics are awesome. He said 13 of 14 seniors graduated.
- "I don't think we've had but one player arrested ... and those charges were dropped."
- "Now we need to get past seven wins."
- He believes USC baseball's championship run can "rub off" on other USC programs.
- More on the arrest record: ``I do think they're more common now because players are getting arrested for everything they didn't used to get arrested for. Nowadays, as you all know, you go straight to jail if you break the law. There is no room for error. Times are different."
- On the team in general: "We have belief and hope that our best days are ahead of us."
- On the offensive zeitgeist: "YOu see a little bit of everything. It starts with your big guys up front. That's what's going to make you a good offense."
- On Vanderbilt's new coach: "I think it's a wonderful opportunity for him. It appears that Bobby is ready to get out of coaching and do something else. All I know about Robbie is that he's a very enthusiastic offensive line coach."
- Is USC what he thought it would be?: We didn't think we'd step in there and start tearing it up. We don't have tremendous tradition there over the long haul. We haven't done poorly. We just haven't done super."
- On following funny guys Joker Phillips and Robbie Caldwell: "I'm not worried about that at all. I don't think I've won enough games lately to have any outlandish quotes. You win a bunch of games, it's easy to give all the answers up here. Right now, I'm just a ball coach."
- On the NCAA releasing each coach's APR rating: "I think it's a pretty good idea. I never thought I'd get as big a bonus for our guys graduating as I did for the bowl game. I didn't even know it was in (the contract.)"
- On the perception that he doesn't get along with QB Stephen Garcia: "I'm just trying to express what he needs to do to help our team. Maybe he's playing the best he can. If you don't have enough player to put in there, you move on."
- On Wesley Saunders, the USC player, who may be involved in the Miami trip: "He went on a trip with several players to Miami on spring break. The question is: Who paid for it? I talked to him briefly. He told me that he's done nothing wrong. We'll let it play out."
- On the other SEC coaches: "Some of them I like more than others. Some of them are my buddies. Some I don't talk to very much."
- On if he's scripting more plays now: "We script them in practice. I probably do more scripting stuff than we used to do. When we were at Florida, we'd just start calling 'em and see which ones work. It's not really that complicated."
- On if he misses Lane Kiffin: ``The former Tennessee coach? I didn't pay much attention. We have our own problems at South Carolina."
- On if he's changed the attitude at USC: ``Our attitude around there hasn't changed to where we hoped it'd be."
- Regret leaving Florida? "I love Florida and always will, but I had been there 12 years. At the time, I thought I wanted to coach in the NFL five or six years and that would be the end of it. The NFL is good for a lot of coaches. They could sit in the film room or video room and watch tape all afternoon and love it. They do this year-round. I can't do that year-round."
- That's a wrap.

Head Ball Coach!
Spurrier on Facebook ...
Steve Spurrier likes "Screwing with people."
Darth Visor; formally the most feared man in college football. Now he coaches at USCe.
former and current sandlapper substance, back to back. Heaven help us.
Love the Ball Coach! Love him!
I don't know about him, but I'm giving up. Took over 2 minutes to get the page to refresh this time.
I think I meant to say ' formerly '. I'm a well documented non-English major.
unfortunately, there's no money to take :-(
does he look energized or tired?
You know he's lost the mojo if he can't insultingly compliment at least one person today.
I bet Bernie is bilking me out of bandwidth.
vandy is a turkey of a football program. he may actually have some success if he can handles turkeys as well as he claims.
it is called being fashionably late folks. try it sometimes. employers love it. (that's not why i'm on the dole again fyi)
He'll saunter in here eventually, I guess.
Any bets that Spurrier gets frustrated in the middle of this and changes his starting QB?
What?! I've only had one player arrested....is this supposed to be a good thing these days.
They didn't used to get arrested because the police were in cahoots....
Ask the HBC why he didn't bring his QB.
After he disses his QB again, ask him why the guy is still the QB if he's so bad.
When he replies that is the best he's got then ask him why he's throwing the backups under the bus also.
I am wondering if this will be the season USCe clicks and ends up second in the SEC East. It could happen.
No way Spurriers could have just said what he did about the arrest record. JGT has to be making some of this up, right? There getting arrested now fo things they used to not be arrested for? Really?
While I happen to agree with Spurrier that he has done a good, but not great job, most SEC fansbases wouldn't accept his record.
Vandy would.
mtd ..Spurrier's right and has the guts to say it.
I think thats about the list of "most" that we'd have in the SEC :)
TommyD ... that's verbatim. There actually was more. I just couldn't type fast enough.
If USCe finishes in the top half of the east, they had a good year. They haven't become one of the big boys yet, but they have a good shot at being better than Tennessee and if they upset Georgia, the only trail Florida.
Spurrier wasn't aware that his contract had an APR bonus?
Never thought I would refer to Spurrier as a "throwback".
Crazy.
Ya know, shmack, when back in the days when people didn't have camera phones, shmack, our kids could get away with anything. Now I guess the law has to be be upheld with all that proof running around.
Then again maybe I'm misinterpreting.
"Cahoots" ... a great word ... not used enough.
APR rating?
Wow..I went back and read Vandy and I did miss all the fun.......
Spurrier is a hoot
"Maybe he's playing the best he can."
Geeze. Well, I guess at least he didn't talk about Garcia's mother.
While at Auburn, Terry Beasley was one of the worst brawlers anywhere.
He was never arrested.
I'm just old fashioned like that Brother.
TommyD you are correct about the evidence now.
APR is the new rating system that penalizes schools for low graduation rates for student athletes.
Thanks SFC
As the Good Book says, we are to forgive our brother seventy times seven, so Beasley is covered.
Coach, don't you have anything good to say about your quarterback?
Spurrier: Well, he has nice hair.
This Miami party sounds like it has the potential to disrupt a LOT of programs.
How did the hate for the Visor turn into love his frankness :)
I aspire to be that forthcoming
As Spurrier has grown older, I have grown to like him, but I do think he could give his QB a complement occasionally.
I have no problem with what Beasley did, considering when he did it.
I think the burden is on the today's kids to adjust to the zero tolerance society that us Baby Boomers have created. It is what it is.
ESPN just reported that Richt had no comment regarding agents interfering with players. There goes Richt again ducking out and and not asserting a position. Kinda like he does when it is time to discipline his team.
A good "complement" to a QB would be a quality Receiver. A good "compliment" to a QB would be "nice hair".
Spurrier in the 1990's = smartazz.
Spurrier in 2010 = grandfatherly smartazz
So where do the top SC QB's go? Clemson? Just wondering why the coach can't seem to find "his guy".
Norm and Jet showing off their superior grammar and English educations - again.
Spurrier doesn't train QBs ...he eats them. If given a reasonable alternative, I wouldn't want my QB-kid playing for him.
Hoopie :)
I just made a rude comment about Spurs regarding Hoopies eating comment. I decided agin it.
MTD - this is no place for that. Out with it.
Shame on you, Hoopie!
How dare you insult The Legend.
Mr. Beasley was a great brawler.
THT ..and ...Mr. Langner also great at that pasttime.
FYI.
AU wants the new DB (best at the recent camp) to go with rose, Florence, Lanier, and they want roberson.
I heard Jones tried to commotion on at least 4 occassions and AU would not take it. AU thought they had better prospects out there. He decided it was time to move on.
AU may not have room for Frost, Uzamah.
That is all.
I presume that means he tried to make a commitment rather than tried to cause a commotion on 4 occasions.
Norm ..I'm guessing that WTC has the same problems that I do with smart phones. They try to think for you and add/change words.
You are correct sir.
Oh I know. I just couldn't resist.
Is this Gaulden this kid commit legit?
I can't read everything now. Had it been mentioned AU got a commit from s DB today?
What about a party Mark Ingram attended that has caught the interest of the NCAA?
Huddy's putting the screws to them. Padres scoreless through 6.
ehyou - what's the rest of that Box Score look like, or are you gonna make me leave this site?
WTC ..Whooo-lio was in Miami in March, so he way be toast. JG says that as many as 50-75 players
(none from AU) may have been involved.
Enough with all these hacks... I want chiz
API
He was the best DB ay the recent camp. Heard did a great job covering all comers. Coaches like him enough to pass on Chris Jones.
Top 7, Hudson 97 pitches.
Braves up 4-zippo.
Braves get 2 in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd & 3rd. Chipper with 2 hits. Newbie Braves Gonzales with 2 RBI's, Glaus with 1, and J-Hey with the other.
Norm, 4-0 Braves... 9-4 on hits.
random ED KING #67 post.
well, it was till someone messed it up. sorry Ed.
oh, it was Wake. it's all good. :)
chop-chop!
Chris Jones has a Region's problem.
He did a great job.
Our last 3 commits(in 1 week)are all low-not rated and were discovered in a summer camp. That sounds similar to some of the xCTT recruiting methods. I've never had a problem with offering to the kids based on first hand evaluations at a camp.
I'm just wondering why the folks that count "stars" aren't doing their normal complaining.
Gonzalez now 4-4 in Braves game.
Braves now up 5-0. Double by former AU Tiger (and Fla Gator - ugh) David Ross.
nice work by Gonzalez today.
what was the story behind Ross leaving for UF after making it to the CWS? i don't remember.
Hinske pinch hitting for Hudson.
I don't know why he left, but he made it to the CWS with UF, too (I think).
Ross wasn't going to get much playing time at his position and left on good terms.
Hinske HBP. Braves up 6-0.
7-ZIP NOW.
Good article.
Will all this precipitate a sea change in college football?
Braves score again. Heyward with the rbi. Okay, I have to get some work done.
Yep, Bravos done busted this one open.
now it's 8 zip. wish i could watch.
gonna go ahead & give some luv my friend at the BuyMore....
MEDIA DAY...
BEASLEY!!!!!!!!!
and a hello KENNESAW, JAWGA!
scottie B- THT says thanks for your attention to detail because he wasn't able to get the page to load in time.
Hoopie, I noticed the same hypocrisy, but the response was that it was different and Chizik will only get criticized if these prospects don't work out, or something like that. It is strange, because CTT found a lot of stars that didn't have a lot of stars. The proof is the huge number of players we sent to the NFL.
As for why more lower rated players this season, I expect some of that. A new staff often comes up with a good recruiting season to start with. A new coach brings excitement and we generated enough optimism in ChixCo's first season to get the high profile player's attention.
The challenge for a staff is to keep the level up every season and be able to rid out the reaction of fair weather fans during the bad years.
Need to work now that the dog and pony show is over....
See ya'll in the morning!
Hoopie- Count me in the concerned column. I've seen this playbook before.
It's not hypocrisy. Tuberville conceded people up front and went after guys who didn't have a good chance to get into school. Chizik is doing a combination of both. Going after the biggest players, even those considered to be locks other places while also doing serious evaluation. I trust his assistants (offensive) much more than those of Tuberville to make a judgment call on their talents when seen in person.
On the flip side, if coaches recruit out of magazines only, they end up with a program like Miami under Larry Coker. All-ACC guys, first round draft picks and 5 loss seasons.
Eddie, you need to be more worried about United and their upcoming season than you need be worried about Chizik and recruiting, especially in July.
Hoopie,
I will definitely be concerned if these "low/no" star commits are still "low/no" star commits after their sr seasons. Although, even if they become highly sought after, they may still not get the stars due to their AU commitment and the bammer-controlled star system. No point in getting in a tizzy about it now. Plenty of time for that after signing day.
PAROLE HEARING!!! Gotta go.
I will post a WRAP at some point in the next two hours.
My primary goal right now is to write something BRILLIANT about the Vanderbilt coach.
And Hoopie.
re: these last few commitments.
You're spot on. It's Tubervillian.
BRILLIANT!
You've set the bar high at BRILLIANT, Jay G. I hope you can deliver.
the commitments are odd. guess we'll have to continue to put our faith in the Chiz.
If I remember correctly, recruiting was slow at this point last year as well and picked up as we got into the season. If this class ends up looking like the 04 or 08 class and Chizik tries to say how it's the best class ever, then we can be upset.
It's not that there's three that's odd, but three in a row.
I'm not "concerned" like Eddie, but I've got my eye on it.
The criticism of CTT is basically a joke. Auburn was one of the top schools in the SEC in terms of sending players to the pros, so the criticism is kind of ridiculous.
It is fair to say that we had an unusual amount of attrition in some of CTTs later classes. Some of that has to be due to who we recruited, although some of it is just plain bad luck.
And to criticize someone for not going after top talent when they consistently got top 15 and sometimes top 10 recruiting classes is kind of bizarre.
And there is also the 2004, which was a big part of the problem we saw in 2008. That issue was largely caused by the administration and Jetgate, but you can also lay a lot of blame on the fair weather fans whining in 2003.
Steve, you're completely and 100 percent right as usual.
You've got no data to back up your "pros" argument and of course you're looking at recruiting rankings that aren't adjusted based on who actually showed up. 2008 was a function of several recruiting years that didn't pan out, not just "Jet Gate" year.
Here we go.
Steve backing Tuberville. This never happens. Maybe the new HABOTN Forum will have a whole area dedicated to defending Tuberville.
With SFC as moderator, of course.
agreed Jet. it's the back-to-back-to-back out of nowhere kids that is odd.
u kids crack me up.
Lol @ Jay G's comment. You're absolutely right. I got suckered.
Love me some Jetgate!
Jet. G. Ate.
I think Tubs did a good job of recruting for most of his time at Auburn, it fell off the last few years, imo due to him not wanting to go toe to toe with Saban. I think Tubbs was good at finding diamonds in the rough, and if Chiz can do the same with these recruits, I'll have no reason to complain.
I think we'll see this class come together with a surprising number of top recruits in th end just like we've seen recently
The good news is, if things keep going according to plan, I think we'll all be proud of the product put on the field for the next several years.
These last three recruits will not be diamonds in the rough by the end of the season. They will pick up multiple offers (assuming other schools don't honor their commitments) and multiple stars.
I wouldn't say defending Tuberville either. He definitely made several key mistakes that caused 2008 to end the way it did. Believe it or not, firing Franklin when he did was stoopid, with a capital stoo.
Some think I defend Tuberville, but in reality I am condemning both fair weather fans, the administration, and the environment which Tuberville allowed to be created.
I'm sure that if we are lacking talent in 3-4 years, folks will have a problem then. I also believe that for now we should give these coaches any benefits from doubt. I just remember recruitniks having issues just because we offered to folks that no other "big" teams offered and don't see any folks making that complaint now. I even remember recruitniks crowing last year because we were offering recruits that all the "big" guys were offering.
In feel that offering low-not rated kids is either valid or not. It shouldn't matter whether who the coach is.
Now if the complaints are that the coaches aren't capable of evaluating talent, that is another issue. I did not hear that accusation in 2006-2008. I only heard that the previous group was lazy and recruited out of the camps so they could stay close to the BBQ grills.
There are things this staff is doing that is much more aggressive than the previous coaches. Maybe because of the coach's aggressivness, the recruitniks are giving these coaches a pass on the low-no stars recruits offered out of camps. Th
SFC's Tuberville Lovefest Forum
I hope the new blog has audio...we'll need some crickets
And as for former players and the lie about not having the data to back it up, here you go.
I love lies that are easily dispelled.
I fat-fingered the send button.
The pass given to the coaches is based on emotion, just like the criticism for the previous coaches.
Criticizing one group and not the other based on emo is hypocrisy.
Shut-out by committee
Bravos win 8-0
Hoopie ...
Labeling it hypocrisy is a little much considering we're looking at three prospects compared to a program that was slipping.
Yikes...didn't mean to start the Tubs arguments. again.
ehyou ... well done!
Chirp chirp chirp
Tubs argument starter! Tubs argument starter!
Exactly, Hoopie. But it is the way society is these days. People want to point fingers and assign blame, but usually there isn't one person to blame.
The only thing to do is to really learn from the situation. If we have a down year, don't jump all over the coaches. The administration should stay out of managing the football team. If the team consistently goes down hill over years, the administration should step in.
And it tickles me that the team that was so great last season was largely Tuberville players. We will have a down year in 2011 because a lot of these horrible Tuberville players will be leaving. You know the ones, like Ziemba, Pugh, Carter, Bynes, Stevens, Fannin. You know, the guys that really suck.
Jet ...I'm just boiling it down to the logic of the issue.
Either the strategy is valid or it isn't. I suspect that negative emotions caused folks to complain ..just because they could conjure a reason to complain.
These "rough diamonds" better work out on the field at a rate equivalent to the 4*s we get into school. If they don't, I hear the throats clearing for a big 'I told you so'.
We'll also need some Red Bull to keep the crickets awake.
I went by the media days' radio row yesterday in B'ham traveling back from my Grandmother's funeral in Selma.
I don't know if I had ever seen much like it. There was alot of people who had eaten waaaaayyy too much fried food talking about the same thing over and over again.
Some one who looked like Bro. Jet asked me and the wife to leave. It was still worth taking a gander at.
We did, and they did.
SFC, slightly old list but point taken.
Hoopie, I understand where you are coming from. I am willing to give these coaches a pass because they are new and have already displayed their competence. The old staff did not get that same benefit of the doubt because they were well established and should have been able to do better at times.
stu ....I bet those folks were all wearing dark pink colored clothes purchased at Walmart.
The phrase: "muh diddy said" was surely prevalent.
I have no doubt that some of these guys won't work out, but I am sure some will. You just can't judge a recruiting class until a couple of years down the road. Heck, who knew Bates would be such a great player? Who would have guessed Raven Gray would become a so what?
So far ChizCo deserves a huge amount of credit for this incoming class and how many have actually made it to school. I don't recall us ever getting this many into school.
By the way, lower star ratings on receivers in this class isn't shocking. If you are a five star receiver looking for immediate playing time, you look at our roster and you don't see it. We are absolutely loaded with receiving talent. Hopefully that will translate into play this season.
Prior to $aban getting to Bama, if I had heard recruitniks say that the previous coaches weren't "changing with the times", then that would seem valid in retrospect ..BUT ..I never heard that ...in those days I only heard that they were lazy.
From what I have read, the atmosphere was a huge issue at Auburn. I don't think lazy is the thing. The description I read very much reminds me of when I worked for a company that was having regular layoffs. Nobody communicated with anyone because there was a CYA attitude. I believe that is what developed at Auburn.
Who is to blame? Tuberville, the AD, the pres, the coaches, the fans,....lots of people.
As for changing with the times, I am impressed that Tuberville went to Troy to get his OC for Texas Tech. That says to me that he is committed to the spread, although I had trouble believing it in 2008.
Radio Row can be a turrifyin' place. Yow. I basically run through there.
What is the criteria for a coach to be considered successful at Auburn? An SEC championship ever 4 or 5 years? A 70% winning percentage? A high graduation rate? No probation?
I don't think Coach Tuberville recruited Willie Anderson, Takeo Spikes, Gary Walker, Tony Richardson among some of those on that link. Just sayin.
mytd...please, just...don't
JG ..Easy now ...Bags is on radio row. Of course so is Pondscum.
Chris Low says AU has only the 6th best WR corp in the SEC. Not sure I agree with that.
oops
I'm thinking there might bears in them woods.
Hoopie, do you not think the last staff got lazy. I have read many of comments from high school coaches that said it seemed as though the previous staff gave up and didn't even recruit in their area.
time for some basement hockey.
y'all keep up the recruiting debate.
Bags is sitting here next to me. He gets off Radio Row as quickly as possible.
if J-Kev was there we'd get some good audio off radio row. oh, well.
what's your boy up to now JG?
Ah the Wynfrey hotel. I had my wedding reception there.
6th is probably a fair ranking for Auburn receivers based upon their performance last season. In terms of talent, I would expect us to be rated much higher. Hopefully we will see more receivers stepping up this season. Last season we were Adams, Zachery, Fannin, and the others. The others need to show up.
Ya'll are going to love the new forums. Should be ready for FULL LAUNCH next week.
Still working on the bugs right now.
Basement Hockey
Is that dirty or not? I feel like I'm missing a good joke opportunity here.
I must have missed the talk about the new forum starting next week.
I think you just heard all the talk there's been.
CHB ...I don't know if it was lazy or a different method of recruiting and that's not the issue with me. Richt at UGA and xCTT recruited very similarly and Richt has only been out of the top 10 in recruiting once during his 10 years. Whether it was a problem or not, in hindsight, it became an out-dated method when $aban arrived and xCTT got caught off guard.
My issue is that I heard the "signing low-rated recruits out of camps" complaint well before $aban got to Bama and don't hear them now. If recruitniks think that is not a good recruiting method, then it shouldn't matter who the coach is, thus the hypocrisy.
Hoopie, I find it likely that the atmosphere could be viewed as lazy over the last few years, although the 2008 class wasn't suppose to be big in the first place. The arrival of Saban did have an affect, just like the arrival of any high profile coach would. I expect the newness to wear off with him too.
It is really hard to call these coaches lazy because from what I have read they put a lot more hours in the most of us.
I have a request for the new sight. Could it have a flashing warning sign that pops up each time Tubertalk is going on? It is only fair to warn people.
I can see your point, but there is more to it. You can look at offering lower rated kids out of camps as the coaches knowing their stuff or as a coach that is too lazy to go out and get the big dogs and they take the low lying fruit. I think this staff can really evaluate talent. Trooper is a heck of a WR coach and we know Chiz is great with DB's. Therefore when they chose these 3 guys then no one think twice about it.
By the way, I can't find the article, but I have read we were 3rd or 4th in the SEC in terms of getting players to the NFL during Tuberville.
Either way I'm extremely happy with this staff and until they prove other wise I trust their opinions.
Hey everyone!
Haven't been on in a while since I've gotten my new job...but I'm back! :) Trying to read all the posts to catch up on media days, but I gotta hand it to Spurrier...I'd milk my Augusta National membership for all it was worth too! Hope everyone's having a good Thursday.
Perhaps there could simply be one segmented forum dedicated to just the Tub.
And it never fails to amaze me that Tuberville sounds like a name of a town. Anyone from there?
SFC "hearts" xcTT
SFC <3 xcTT
I like what this staff has done so far, too. Although I don't think you can really fairly judge a coach until about 4 or 5 years in. Often you see coaches come in, do well for a couple of years, and turn into caca.
Quiz for the day. Can anyone name a past Auburn coach that fits this description perfectly? Inquiring minds want to know.
Tator Tot
CH=B wins!!! CH=B wins!!!
what, no Earl Brown?
Hoopie - there's no reason to have heard the ''
"'signing low-rated recruits out of camps' complaint" since the Chiz & Co. have done nothing of the sort.....yet. So you can't label it hypocrisy until they've done it and the folks who didn't like it with xCTT express their displeasure again.
scottie b - I think ol' Earl was disqualified from the competition for not meeting the "do well" criteria.
Personally, I don't care if we sign all two stars as long as our two stars kick their five stars butts. Actually, I might like it even better that way.
Some of this kind of reminds me of discussions with Bamers during the 6 game Iron Bowl winning streak.
Bamer: You only won 6 in a row because our players sucked and our coaches sucked.
Me: Well, if you say your players sucked and coaches sucked, doesn't that mean you sucked, and if you sucked, doesn't that pretty much mean Bama sucked? And if Bama sucked, isn't that a condemnation of college football in general? And if college football sucked and college football is America's game, doesn't that mean America sucks? Well, I am not staying around while you bash America!!!
Or was the Animal House? This is very confusing.
Animal House references are welcomed any time.
xCTT talk, not so much.
I win! Went further back than you, THT! Na na na na boo boo!
no you didn't! The thread count was already even, so I left this one alone... until you came along and odded it all up.
