The more I listen to how Tony Franklin did things, the less I like it. I wonder if he even planned practice. I know he didn't like to gameplan. I think that his organizational skills might have been an issue with him. That is not to say he was not committed to football, but, to quote Coach Wooden, he who fails to plan, plans to fail.

It is like he was some sort of mad genius where, at a certain level in college football, he could have been successful. The SEC, however, might have been tougher. That is not necessarily a knock on him, go ask Steve Spurrier about the pro game. But the level of skill and coaching might have been such that sheer 'genius' might not have been enough.

A few weeks back, Troy folks were saying that their previous QB was more talented than at AU. Perhaps so, but the comparison is like comparing a winning single A pitcher to a middle of the road Major leaguer. The Major leaguer is still, more than likely, better.

Anyway, it appears that the QB never had a real idea on what he needed to do. Maybe Franklin's 'gut' told him how to do things.

I love CTT but my grandfather would refer to that by saying, "Tubs got his ears lowered."

Also, John Vaughn is back at AU? Guess it didn't pan out at all with the Titans? Dang that sucks, but then again they do have the best kicker in the NFL.

5:07 PM
Blogger Denny Crum said...

One last thing, other than because you have to attend, I can't think of any reason why you go to the CTT press conference. At least with Coach Bobby Knight there might be fireworks or something.

5:08 PM
Blogger Jeremy Eubanks said...

my favorite BK press conference was one of his last: The one where he brought his grandkid, played with him and ignored the press, looked up and cused about something, then went back to playing with his grandkid. Priceless. Tubs would be well served to have such good press conference material.

ALl this stuff coming out about Franklin makes me wonder how it worked at Troy. It's seems like he knew it wasn't working with this staff and just kind of went through the motions.

Maybe if we gave a name to our offense it would do better. Hmmmm, the A formation, the I formation, the spread. How about calling it the AI Spread. It kind of makes sense, artifical intelligence.

Jay, if Tuberville's press conferences aren't exciting, shouldn't you ask some leading question to get him going? Possibly, have you requested accommodations suggestion for Shreveport with anyone at the University of Alabama?

5:26 PM

AI spread looks too much like A(lowercase L)Spread, which reminds me of the spread that Al Borges allegedly ran, and which made up (again, allegedly) 50% of this years spread.

Message to Burns. When you are riding a 3 game loosing streak don't say we need to continue doing what we are doing.

5:30 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Tubs made a huge mistake when he hired Franklin. If he wanted to go a different direction than Borges, then he should have done some more interviewing to make sure the guy was a fit for his staff and his philosophy. I personally believe he reacted to stars and Saban. I was baited hook, line & sinker on the Franklin hire. That's why we fans should not be in charge of hiring and firing coaches, but with that said, Tubs deserves the blame for the hire, I just don't think he should be fired just yet.

eddie4au, that's why I don't think Franklin was necessarily Tuberville's choice. I remember that Borges wasn't our first choice when we hired him in '04, and I also remember that he had to interview with the staff to see how well he meshed. That didn't seem to happen last year.

I seem to remember that the first OC interviewee in '04 didn't pan out after the interview. I wish I could remember his name.

During a campfire a few weeks ago I asked if our team has a sports psychologist. Anyone know?

"I love Larry Blakeney and Larry Blakeney loves me." Tony Franklin
They loved each other. That's how it worked at Troy.

6:02 PM

Maybe you could stir up something to give us a Mike Gundy-type "I'm a man, I'm 40 speech" or pick a Bobby Knight tirade. Just something that would end this monatanous double speak every single time. Most of the time the stuff isn't even remotely true.

I think that the WVU goal-line debacle was BOTH Kodi and Mario screwing up.

The entire O-line blocks left.

The fullback runs left.

The LG pulls!

But Mario ran right (this was his mistake - the first error on the play and thus, the most critical.)

But Kodi's mistake was that, seeing Mario going the wrong way, he didn't just keep the ball & run left like the play was intended to go.

Moral of the Story?

2 wrongs do not make a touchdown

Steve- I'm buying the rope for 2-3 of the assistant coaches. I want championships and I'm not convinced that Tubs can't still get the job done. I've been on the fence the whole time with a lean to Tubs.

Weagle- I do believe it was his first choice or else he would have opened up the interviewing process. On that note, I also believe Borges was Tubs first choice also. The only coach I believe turned Tubs down was Coach Rhoads after 2001 season.

6:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am wondering what I would ask if I were in Jay's shoes. You can't really piss off Tuberville, so some kind of question to get him talking about something more specific might be the ticket.

For instance, we have been told that Chris Slaughter, Tim Hawthorne, and Terrell Zachary are all very talented guys, high profile recruits, but none of them has done anything on the field this season to deserve much praise. Last season I believe the coaches were even saying that had to find a way to get Slaughter the ball.

Are they making any adjustments to get these guys more involved? The intermediate passing game over the middle and the long balls have been nearly non-existent. What can be done to change that?

This is the area of our offense that I am most concerned with and were I think there is the most room for improvement. Improvement here would definitely benefit other areas of the offense.

I'm afraid I haven't read or heard anything here today to make me very optimistic about our future. No grades for players? How could Nall live with that?

But at least this made me laugh:

>>>My job is to tell you what he's saying. So I go.<<<

Keep up the good work Jay.

OK, you put the odds of Tubby not making it at 75% earlier in the week. How important is beating Ole Miss to him staying? If we beat them, then we at least get the Weedeater Bowl. Lose it and we likely stay home for the holidays.

If AU doesn't win Saturday, looks like to me there's a pretty good chance that we are staring 5-7 in the face. Do you think that would prove fatal for Tubs?

7:20 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I'm finally home and just got to watch the video. No Freakin Grades on offense. What are we running, the Montessoi Offense. Do we kum bah ya, everything will be all right. That is terrible. Any chance Franklin didn't give grades so that he could keep justifying sending Todd out there?

This just stinks and makes no sense.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Cory, I actually thought he looked better than he has previous. JMHO.

7:23 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I don't consider a loss to Ole Miss fatal.

I have talked with two people now, people I consider important, who foresee Tuberville getting another season to fix the offensive quagmire.

So I may soon be dropping that 75% figure. The rage I heard two or three weeks ago seems to have cooled ... at least to some degree.

7:25 PM

Interesting and good to hear Jay. I would still bet that if we look absolutely flat against Ole Miss then it gets dicey again.

Not Tim-You know how early on most fans say 'we're not showing anything until later.' Well maybe AU got the offense working in practice and they are just saving it for Miss/UGA/UA. That has to be the reason since we haven't shown anything over the past few (all of them) games.

BTW-during a break today I was reviewing the past 3 years of our recruits on Rivals and noticed many of them have never played a down for AU or never got to the school. What happened?

So remember, it can get worse.

7:54 PM

Not Tim- Some of them had to make or else we couldn't field a team. I do understand where you are going. We have had several guys that signed with Auburn that either never made it here or only lasted a year. I believe we are saving our offense for next year. If we had anything to show, we would have showed it by now. I believ that we have had 2 QB's that were not able to grasp whatever version of the offense they were running and we dumbed it down to the point of vanilla beans.

Does anyone thing AU will be tremendously better on offense next year? Can we improve that much? I see the darkside to the west improved, but they have very good offensive line. They went after linemen and got them. Now they can put the pieces together to fill the other holes, which they did. They also happened to get good QB work out of JPW this year. I didn't think he could do it, but so far he hasn't gotten them beat.

I do not se AU getting many OL prospects in '09. I am I wrong in thinking this?

Upset either of the last two, and I would consider his chances to be pretty good, although I just don't see that happening. I could be wrong, there is a lot of time between now and the Iron Bowl, but the offense would have to improve dramatically.

Also, regarding Steve FC's comment about calling the offense the "AI Spread": AI, in some medical circles, stands for artificial insemination. So I like it. Maybe a little "AI Spread" would be a cure for our currently impotent and infertile offense.

autiger- I think the staff is throwing out everything they can think of to improve what is going on. Desperate times call for desperate measures. 1's on 1's is commen in the OL vs DL and WR's vs DB's. To go 1's vs 1's team is definitely unorthidoxed.

Eddie,

I know they've got to be trying everything can than think of. I just seems odd for them to be this lost. Maybe it goes back to trying to run an offense that isn't theirs, but it just came across to me as sounding very lost. And lost is not good for a senior staff 8 games in.

autiger- They are completely lost unfortunately. The problem we have on offense is that we have no leadership on the offensive coaching staff and we have no leadership on the offensive team. They are trying hard to gel and give game like situations to build confidence. Will it work??? I doubt it will work, but I have my fingers crossed.

I have heard several comments over the past two weeks in Auburn that the BOT has raised the money and they are just letting Tubbs hang in the wind. The theory is they seem to think that if he loses (which included WVU) the fans will rally to them to get him out. I have been looking for a statement to come out after UGA game.

It would be a huge mistake to send him packing. But the BOT has proven to be able to make AU look very bad in the media over the years. I hope they leave him alone for another year to let him right the ship.

Eddie,

I hope it does work. I've been watching AU football for a long time. It's been a long while since they looked this out of whack. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Tubs and I hope he gets next year to fix this, because I think he can, but right now its bad. And if he's got no one on the coaching staff that can lend any leadership to this situation, well thats sad.

Did anyone see Tulsa Sunday night? You guys may have discussed it, but they looked very good against UCF and kept there offensive numbers in tact. I know many will say that offense will not work in the SEC, but can it be any worse than what we currently are running? Look at who AU has recruited. Surely not many think we can run a power I with the recruits that have committed to AU so far.

I still think Malzahn would come to AU if offered and I think it would work well if he were here.

Did anyone hear the private detective on Sportsline this morning? I have tried twice today to ask but the threads keep moving. Was is just some crazy or is there any truth to the 6 players and recruiting?

what six players and whose recruiting?

9:34 PM

Wootangclan- It has definitely been discussed here and most seem to like Mahlzan as OC. Just let him bring is staff (That's my opinon). But I would also like to expand that I bet most wanted Tony Franklin last year also, especially after Troy played Georgia. So be careful what you wish for.

Isn't Shane Wasden the WR coach Troy? Was he there with TF? If so, I think he would have crawled to AU to be the WR coach.

AUTiger3, we are no longer running the Franklin offense. Sure, there are bits and pieces left, but we are basically going back to some of the Borges stuff. Right or Wrong, that looks like where it is headed. We will line up in the spread formation, but this isn't close to the Franklin offense.

eddie, I agree on the OC brining his staff. Tuberville could try to sell him on some of the barbeque bunch, but the new OC should have complete control over the offense. Tuberville should act in more of a managerial roll.

9:46 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I believe you are correct wootangclan. Wasden is the WR coach at Troy. You would have to imagine he would love to return here. I'm affraid that we are going to end up with Pat Nix as OC. I want somebody to believe in, but maybe someone like Pat would be a good hire. I have no clue anymore. I just like to make guess and critize when they are wrong :)!!!

Steve,

I realize that they are not running Franklin's O. Don't recall stating they were running CTF's O, but whatever. Whoever's it is, it's not really theirs (any of them). It's all basically borrowed stuff, right? Point was made earlier that people spend entire careers refining an offense. Whatever we're running, we don't have the original architect on staff. That seems to be a big part of the problem right now and it won't get better till next year. So, as I said, I'd love to see Tubs get next year with a new (hopefully better fit) OC to fix this.

Re Pat Nix: he may be a good "fit" on this staff, but Miami hasn't been overly impressive. Not bad, but not great either. I'd rather have someone with a little more proven record against the type of competition we play every week in the SEC.

Autiger- Don't get me wrong, I don't want Pat Nix at all. I'm just wondering who Auburn can attract at the OC position realisticly. I'm affraid we end up Pat Nix or someone like that.

He needs to let some coaches go. Here's a question. Don't most assisstant coaches have some ambition to move up the ranks? I think I would. Isn't that what would drive them to keep working hard and improving thier respective areas/players? Our group of O assisstants is apparently content to just sit where they are. What's thier motivation to keep improving? I think from that perspective alone its time for some fresh blood.

Monica- I'm watching the Marshall game. I like the Green Helments. Looks good. There have been some doozy comments scrolling across.

Autiger- Some coaches are only going to be assistant coaches. I don't think that you will ever see Don Dunn, Terry Price, Ensminger, or Knox as a head coach or out right coordinator. Football is no different than any other business. You have people that you can count on and you are content to having them at that capacity because you know they will never progress to something more.

10:06 PM
Blogger WRB3 said...

Eddie,

That was how I interpreted your post (that you didn't want Nix). Just adding my 2 cents.

I don't think we'll have a problem attracting a great OC. If Franklin is the oddball he seems to be, others in the coaching profession will know that and will realize (likely better than us) that the whole fiasco was not Tubs fault or doing. Also, it's a job at an SEC school that SHOULD be able to compete for the conference title yearly and it will pay nicely. And all these OC guys will think they have the answer and want to prove it. If they can turn this around they can pick the school they want to be an HC at.

You're right, but sometimes you need someone with a little fire and drive in those positions. Like right now. I don't think our guys have that right now. Why should they? Just saying it wouldn't hurt to have a few young gunners on the staff.

Malzahn. Not sold. Our current offense would put up good number against Tulsa schedule thus far. They play Arkansas this week. Let's see how they do with that. That a bottom tier (ouch) SEC team. If they put up a ton of points on them I'll be a little more convinced. But I bet Arky beats Tulsa.

Chris-Malzahn just seems to able to put an effective offensive game plan together. It is very balanced and doesn't require the team to sell out on way or the other. I think he got a raw deal at ARK and could do a good job at AU. Maybe he is an up and comer. Just thought he should be one that is looked at. Maybe he won't work, but if AU is going to a version of the spread, he would be a good candidate to run it.

I do believe we are going to run a version of the spread next year if Tubbs stays.

Eddie,

They will no doubt do better than we did, but that's not saying anything at all. Qualification for next OC should be just do better than we did this year. Heck, most people on this board could do that. Point is, Malzahn's not tested. JMO.

I agree 100% Eddie.

By the way, do we have a number to put on the suck rating. Maybe we should create one so we can track it the rest of the year. Maybe if it improves (up or down?) that would help us all feel better.

I think what we had here was a failure to communicate. My guess is that Franklin came in and wasn't able to teach the coaches. It is one thing to teach a highschool coach while his lips are planted firmly on your buttocks, but to train a coach that has a ton of experience, tact is required. Franklin seems to be as subtle as a sledgehammer. I think that is basically where the problems began.

My reason for thinking they will buy in next year is that most of the WR's and the QB we have committed all run the spread as far as I can tell. They are already sold on it. What really bothers me is that we beat out Troy, UAB, and FL Atlantic for too many of them.

Our suck rating on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the suckiest rating, I say we are scoring a high 7. If we give up putting a good first half in a game, we will be knocking on a 9 to 10 quickly.
