did Tubs get a haircut. he looks especially well groomed today.
I didn't notice.
Hadn't been getting grades.
Geez Lou-freakin-weeezer
I was shocked.
The more I listen to how Tony Franklin did things, the less I like it. I wonder if he even planned practice. I know he didn't like to gameplan. I think that his organizational skills might have been an issue with him. That is not to say he was not committed to football, but, to quote Coach Wooden, he who fails to plan, plans to fail.
It is like he was some sort of mad genius where, at a certain level in college football, he could have been successful. The SEC, however, might have been tougher. That is not necessarily a knock on him, go ask Steve Spurrier about the pro game. But the level of skill and coaching might have been such that sheer 'genius' might not have been enough.
A few weeks back, Troy folks were saying that their previous QB was more talented than at AU. Perhaps so, but the comparison is like comparing a winning single A pitcher to a middle of the road Major leaguer. The Major leaguer is still, more than likely, better.
Anyway, it appears that the QB never had a real idea on what he needed to do. Maybe Franklin's 'gut' told him how to do things.
The sporting world is replete with individuals that do well at certain levels. The "Peter Principle" is definitely at work in the sporting world. You know, people rise to their own levels of failure and mediocrity.

-------------------------------
I love CTT but my grandfather would refer to that by saying, "Tubs got his ears lowered."
Also, John Vaughn is back at AU? Guess it didn't pan out at all with the Titans? Dang that sucks, but then again they do have the best kicker in the NFL.
One last thing, other than because you have to attend, I can't think of any reason why you go to the CTT press conference. At least with Coach Bobby Knight there might be fireworks or something.
my favorite BK press conference was one of his last: The one where he brought his grandkid, played with him and ignored the press, looked up and cused about something, then went back to playing with his grandkid. Priceless. Tubs would be well served to have such good press conference material.
My job is to tell you what he's saying. So I go.
ALl this stuff coming out about Franklin makes me wonder how it worked at Troy. It's seems like he knew it wasn't working with this staff and just kind of went through the motions.
Maybe if we gave a name to our offense it would do better. Hmmmm, the A formation, the I formation, the spread. How about calling it the AI Spread. It kind of makes sense, artifical intelligence.
Jay, if Tuberville's press conferences aren't exciting, shouldn't you ask some leading question to get him going? Possibly, have you requested accommodations suggestion for Shreveport with anyone at the University of Alabama?
AI spread looks too much like A(lowercase L)Spread, which reminds me of the spread that Al Borges allegedly ran, and which made up (again, allegedly) 50% of this years spread.
I lead him sometimes.
You know, Saban brought in a motivational psychologist before the season to work with his team. I'm thinkin' the guy hypnotized those boys into thinking they were good.
Anybody got his number? Maybe we should give him a call.
Message to Burns. When you are riding a 3 game loosing streak don't say we need to continue doing what we are doing.
Tubs made a huge mistake when he hired Franklin. If he wanted to go a different direction than Borges, then he should have done some more interviewing to make sure the guy was a fit for his staff and his philosophy. I personally believe he reacted to stars and Saban. I was baited hook, line & sinker on the Franklin hire. That's why we fans should not be in charge of hiring and firing coaches, but with that said, Tubs deserves the blame for the hire, I just don't think he should be fired just yet.
I have a problem with college kids being called out for what they say in a press conference. Coaches, okay, part of their job is PR, but not the kids.
See ... that's what I was saying yesterday. Tubs should be fired but I don't think he should be fired. Do you see what I mean?
Or is it just too much Zen?
eddie, I thought you were bringing the rope to the lynching.
Here's something I found from another blog(not as good as this one!) that I had been wondering since WV.
"Fannin said that it was he -- not Burns -- who went the wrong direction on the goal line handoff on Auburn's first drive at West Virginia last week."
That is interesting chris03. I had wondered what was going on there. It reminded me of the wrong way Bo game.
I'm on Bo Megginson's show out of Mobile right now.
Fannin said that today, yes.
Jay,
I wish you would just start stiring stuff in the press conferences. They are such a bore right now. Nothing mean or anything, but you could use your rapier like wit to make them more entertaining. Please,,,I could let you sit in a luxury box at Freedom Hall or go Kodiak bear hunting with me.
I generally don't stir stuff up at press conferences because all the TV people are there.
I'm better during small-group queries.
eddie4au, that's why I don't think Franklin was necessarily Tuberville's choice. I remember that Borges wasn't our first choice when we hired him in '04, and I also remember that he had to interview with the staff to see how well he meshed. That didn't seem to happen last year.
I seem to remember that the first OC interviewee in '04 didn't pan out after the interview. I wish I could remember his name.
During a campfire a few weeks ago I asked if our team has a sports psychologist. Anyone know?
"I love Larry Blakeney and Larry Blakeney loves me." Tony Franklin
They loved each other. That's how it worked at Troy.
Maybe you could stir up something to give us a Mike Gundy-type "I'm a man, I'm 40 speech" or pick a Bobby Knight tirade. Just something that would end this monatanous double speak every single time. Most of the time the stuff isn't even remotely true.
Did I miss Jay on the air? Grrrr why does Greg keep insisting he needs to eat dinner???
I think that the WVU goal-line debacle was BOTH Kodi and Mario screwing up.
The entire O-line blocks left.
The fullback runs left.
The LG pulls!
But Mario ran right (this was his mistake - the first error on the play and thus, the most critical.)
But Kodi's mistake was that, seeing Mario going the wrong way, he didn't just keep the ball & run left like the play was intended to go.
Moral of the Story?
2 wrongs do not make a touchdown
Debacle is such a strong word, I like 'miscue', but be sure to put devastating in front of it.
Steve- I'm buying the rope for 2-3 of the assistant coaches. I want championships and I'm not convinced that Tubs can't still get the job done. I've been on the fence the whole time with a lean to Tubs.
Weagle- I do believe it was his first choice or else he would have opened up the interviewing process. On that note, I also believe Borges was Tubs first choice also. The only coach I believe turned Tubs down was Coach Rhoads after 2001 season.
I am wondering what I would ask if I were in Jay's shoes. You can't really piss off Tuberville, so some kind of question to get him talking about something more specific might be the ticket.
For instance, we have been told that Chris Slaughter, Tim Hawthorne, and Terrell Zachary are all very talented guys, high profile recruits, but none of them has done anything on the field this season to deserve much praise. Last season I believe the coaches were even saying that had to find a way to get Slaughter the ball.
Are they making any adjustments to get these guys more involved? The intermediate passing game over the middle and the long balls have been nearly non-existent. What can be done to change that?
This is the area of our offense that I am most concerned with and were I think there is the most room for improvement. Improvement here would definitely benefit other areas of the offense.
no wonder the kids had no idea what they were doing? no grades? like going to school for 8 weeks and having no idea what to study for? friggin' horrible.
I could've sworn that we interviewed someone prior to Borges, but he never got an offer. The name completely escapes me now. I could certainly be wrong.
Scott b, I think you have a typo on your profile or you actually have furry children.
Again, I leave for a little bit and Spinning Steve Sunshine from Columbia is suddenly cynical about the team.
I've lost my faith in humanity. He was the one guy I thought I could count on to make me feel good about this team.
steve, is your new Aubie avatar a mean, pissed off Aubie? looks that way. he must've been watching game film from this year.
scottie b, maybe we're taking the Little League Soccer approach. Everybody gets a trophy!
weagle251, I think you are correct. I can't recall the name either, but I don't believe it was a big name guy.
Scott, my new avatar is a disguise, although it doesn't seem to work to well on here.
nope Steve, i have furry children. we call our dogs and cat our 'kids'. kinda confusing, i know. click on my blog and you'll see. i'm not completely crazy....although this season is pushing me to the brink.
Bwaahahaha, okay, now I get it.
Interviewed along with Borges: Rob Spence (now unemployed, was at Clemson) and Shane Montgomery of Miami, Ohio. He's the head coach there now.
Thanks Jay, I think Rob Spence was the guy I was thinking of.
Scottie ... no offense to your lovely wife, but the six-finger salute pic was out-friggin-standing.
I clicked on that at least 20 times just to see those huge hands.
so I'm gonna go ahead and show my ignornace..who is Cordera Eason???
Ole Miss' running back!
He's known the world around. Geez.
How about the MIA Offensive Mafia?
OR 3 and out?
OR 3 runs and a shanked punt?
or GranKnoxNallMinsgerTuber Offensive Experiment
ooops guesse I better get my scouting report on ole miss...thanks Jay
"GranKnoxNallMinsgerTuber" is the test they run to see if you have ensminger syndrome...
Ensminger Syndrome.
Explain the behavioral symptoms...
gotta go watch House..see ya'll WAR EAGLE
Ummm, this guy I know, he has this problem with this rash in this place that he thinks he got from a czech hooker. Should this guy I know get checked for ensminger syndrome?
wartiger, you just gonna leave us hanging for HOUSE? outrage!
JG, that pic is actually my sister. once the wife saw it i had to change it to one of me and her. tis life. the '6' fingers were a huge hit. i've got 'em in my closet if anybody has a need.
confusion, loss of grip in the hands, fear of an endzone, ummmm blocking left and running right...i'd call it frankling syndrome but ensminger actually sounds like a disease..basically it's all of our problems rest with esnminer syndrome. if you got a guy on your staff that sounds like a sickness let's just blame it all on him.. i am just kidding of course I dont want to just bash on the guy..but he's a great guy....or a disease
naww i aint gonna do that..House tells me the symptoms for ensminger syndrome..i'm no doctor man..obviously hugh laurie is a real doctor...duhhh
i meant "bet he's a great guy." gotta start proof reading these things
hugh laurie is not even AMERICAN, much less a doctor
Is it me or does Tubs look beaten down? I get the impression he knows his days are numbered.
I'm afraid I haven't read or heard anything here today to make me very optimistic about our future. No grades for players? How could Nall live with that?
But at least this made me laugh:
>>>My job is to tell you what he's saying. So I go.<<<
Keep up the good work Jay.
OK, you put the odds of Tubby not making it at 75% earlier in the week. How important is beating Ole Miss to him staying? If we beat them, then we at least get the Weedeater Bowl. Lose it and we likely stay home for the holidays.
If AU doesn't win Saturday, looks like to me there's a pretty good chance that we are staring 5-7 in the face. Do you think that would prove fatal for Tubs?
I'm finally home and just got to watch the video. No Freakin Grades on offense. What are we running, the Montessoi Offense. Do we kum bah ya, everything will be all right. That is terrible. Any chance Franklin didn't give grades so that he could keep justifying sending Todd out there?
This just stinks and makes no sense.
Cory, I actually thought he looked better than he has previous. JMHO.
I don't consider a loss to Ole Miss fatal.
I have talked with two people now, people I consider important, who foresee Tuberville getting another season to fix the offensive quagmire.
So I may soon be dropping that 75% figure. The rage I heard two or three weeks ago seems to have cooled ... at least to some degree.
Interesting and good to hear Jay. I would still bet that if we look absolutely flat against Ole Miss then it gets dicey again.
I'm headed home after a fairly long day here on the Plains.
My parent company announced today that all newspapers must cut their budgets by 10%, which will include layoffs at the Advertiser. I'm not sure what to think there, but I promise the HOTTIES that I'll continue to cultivate the HABOTN until my key stops working.
You all being so fun and reasonable makes my job much more enjoyable. Thanks for all you do.
You mean replacing grades with a group hug didn't work? Man, now I have heard everything.
You won't be in the 10%. You're the best, Jay G.
Good luck with that Jay, are the cuts coming soon?
I know it sucks, where I work we're laying off 40 people that work in my department in a few weeks...everyone knows it's coming, but only a few of us know how bad it is going to be.
Jay, I surely hope you stay on the beat and the pay role. We can campaign if needed. The HABOTN Nation always has your back.
The layoffs occur Dec. 1, I think. Ugh.
No campaigning necessary. The people who must make those nasty decisions surely have enough pressure on them as it is.
Thanks for having my back, though!
It sucks for anyone to have to make those decisions, but making them at Christmas time is just wrong.
Good luck Jay. Layoffs are tough. I have been through them often.
Steve- Your new picture looks like Aubie has two black eyes. That has to be a special version for this season.
Best wishes, Jay G.
All the best - Mr. Sensible
Not Tim-You know how early on most fans say 'we're not showing anything until later.' Well maybe AU got the offense working in practice and they are just saving it for Miss/UGA/UA. That has to be the reason since we haven't shown anything over the past few (all of them) games.
BTW-during a break today I was reviewing the past 3 years of our recruits on Rivals and noticed many of them have never played a down for AU or never got to the school. What happened?
That sucks about the layoffs.
You could take this gig solo if you had to Jay G - I'd pay if it came to that.
Not Tim again- I thought I would let you guys know that even though AU is down, the economy is down, the market is down, things could be worse.
A buddy introduced me to someone the other day and promptly pointed out that I was a stock broker for AIG and an AU fan.
So remember, it can get worse.
Not Tim- Some of them had to make or else we couldn't field a team. I do understand where you are going. We have had several guys that signed with Auburn that either never made it here or only lasted a year. I believe we are saving our offense for next year. If we had anything to show, we would have showed it by now. I believ that we have had 2 QB's that were not able to grasp whatever version of the offense they were running and we dumbed it down to the point of vanilla beans.
I love how the anonymous posters have learned to differentiate themselves from Tim.
Tim brings it when he posts anonymously.
On JamesInB'Ham's note, I'd gladly chip in for this site. It's totally worth it.

Jay,
I know you'll be fine. Good writers are hard to find today.
Auburn is very important to the Advertiser, so they will always need a beat writer.
If they don't start your own pay website. I'll join for sure.
Me too. I would pony up if need be. It is totaly worth it. Can't beat the content nor the conversations here.
See, Jay is already making $50 a month. Just imagine the possibilities.
One thing that really stinks about this year is it is an even year. We have all our tough games at home. Next season is just the opposite, all the tough games are away.
Here is a Tuberville hater from the past. Thought this will lighten up the mood.
Tuberville Hater
Does anyone thing AU will be tremendously better on offense next year? Can we improve that much? I see the darkside to the west improved, but they have very good offensive line. They went after linemen and got them. Now they can put the pieces together to fill the other holes, which they did. They also happened to get good QB work out of JPW this year. I didn't think he could do it, but so far he hasn't gotten them beat.
I do not se AU getting many OL prospects in '09. I am I wrong in thinking this?
Steve- It does suck about Odd years, but at the same time, who knows what next years schedule will really be like. Look at Georgia's schedule this year. It looked like murders row, and it is definitely not what it was predicted to be at the start.
monica and scottie b ... all I can say is ...
sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!
My question should have read, am I wrong in thinking this?
Love the Rasta Phred. Whats new in your world. Ready to keep beating the horse?
home and ready for dinner. I haven't read a single post but I bet I know what they say. Does that answer your question?
What did we hear about Fulmer today? We should pay attention to that. Seriously.
I'm all for the love-fest going on, but I sure as heck ain't payin for the Hottie fix, no matter how intoxicating. What's mine is mine.
Rumor in Tennesse is that Fulmer is out after kentucky game. Seems to be really floating around up there. Also said that assistants have been informed and that 2 of the assistants will also be gone after Kentucky. New coach gets to determine if the others stay.
UT could affect us if we get rid of a coach. Jay seems to believe things are changing in Tubs favor.
sorry re trouble at gannett, you (jgt)and mr. moon should consider a web based au program.
eddie!..nice comment...Montessori Offense...yeah what good are grades anyway? Everyone knows that competition could harm those young egos.
Wait!...now Tubs is now a less than 75% chance of getting canned? Must be getting later in the week..that positive mojo is setting us up again. I'm bettin' the chances are back up to 90% after the upcoming Ole Miss loss. With all due respect to Phred's dead horse concerns...this is kinda like the stock market...moves up and down with an overall downward trend.
Michael, I am going to have to pull your card on this one, hommie.
I love the Hottie fix as much as the next person and the fact that it is free is great. However, if I have to pay to be here where the info is solid and the comradarie is great or go back to "other message board" wasteland (no offense to BMatt & the gang), I will gladly join in here. I know you will too Michael. Because you, like Jan Terry, are the bomb! Peace out brotha.
Cut backs, boo that. Screw all that though Jay, I'm sure you are 100% good to go. On a side note, Do you think no bowl game and loses to Ole Miss, UGA, and Bama will lead to Tub's getting fired?
I don't get to post as much as times past, but if JGT got canned(chances are < 5%)and took this on full time, I'd pay.
So sorry to hear about the budget cuts Jay. Sure hope it doesn't effect your ability to do your job.
I'm saddened to see so many newspapers falling on hard times. The Advertiser isn't available where I live, but I read the B'ham News every day. I grew up closer to Montgomery and started reading the Advertise cover to cover when I was about 12. I've got a box somewhere that's full of Advertiser Sport's pages from football Sundays in the 60's. Guess kids today don't save things like that, or even read the newspaper for that matter. Its all the fault of that danged ole internet. I oughta quit using it just as a form of protest.
Well f. How much are you charging, Jay? The economy is bad for everyone. I don't need this guilt, I am Hot.
You need to start putting advertisers up, then you will make some dough! The Hotties refresh till their clickers won't click no more. Sell the shirts. Put up viagra ads. Free credit report ads. Its just like in that Killer Tomatoes movie, you may have to start doing product placement to survive.
Jan Terri!!
Just heard an interesting observation from someone in the know in the Coaches world. The coaching fraternity believe that Tubs is out. That usually means that someone has been talking and gauging interest in coaches from Auburn's side of things. This is what is floating around in the coaches world. Thought I would pass that along.
Unless I missed something, I don't think the "no grades" from Franklin was a Montessori/huggy bear issue. I think it was a lazy/disorganized/head-up-the-butticus issue.
AIG broker? harsh
Phred - Rasta Tommy looks good on ya.
Go Herd
Quote of the night: "I don't need this guilt. I am hot."
hahahahahahaha
The stuff here is better than anything out there that people pay for. I would pay as well. The HOTTIES are just so much more congenial than the great unwashed that are on the other sites. I do so hate to sound like an elitist. But, hey,,,,,this site has the most UNbiased info out there.
Monica,
How did a nice girl like you end up in West By God Virginia..Did your husband drag you up there?
Jay G,
Did you ever think of opening an Ale 8 One distributorship here? I would buy 3 cases a month, easy.
I owe you one.
Denny - I so agree. I'm so sick of 99.9% smack .10% fluff.
When hubby and I met I was in Montgomery doing grad school. We did the long distance thing for a while. Then I moved here, finished grad school at Marshall and we were married. We'll be moving to Alabama next Summer. (Praise the Lord)
You are a good man, Michael Jan Terry.
Time to shake the Money Tree Mr. Sensible.
eddie, I hope you are wrong about Tuberville, but I can see it happening. I have been suspecting that his chances of staying drop to zero should we loose to Ole Miss. Obviously if we loose to UT-Marin he is history. Beat those two and I would think he has a chance. Upset either of the last two, and I would consider his chances to be pretty good, although I just don't see that happening. I could be wrong, there is a lot of time between now and the Iron Bowl, but the offense would have to improve dramatically.
Where else do most of the HOTTIES love to watch House. You know, sometimes I wish CTT was more like House. I would respect that more. Can you imagine a press conference where the coach was like House. What a minute.... Coach Knight is kind of like House, except for the profanity...Maybe Jay G could start being like House... That would be entertaining.
Just catching up on the days posts. Tubs comment about 1s on 1s just doesn't sound good.
"We're doing a lot of things to finding the key to putting four quarters together."
That doesn't sound like something I'd expect to hear from a staff that's been together this long. They should have a clue how to get a team (any team) ready to play four quaters.
I agree Steve. I promise you that I take serious what I posted in hearing what I heard. I really hope that its not the case. Though, I can go out and get the pitch fork, light a torch and march towards Tubs house :)!!!!! I guess it just means that the wheels are really turning.
Also, regarding Steve FC's comment about calling the offense the "AI Spread": AI, in some medical circles, stands for artificial insemination. So I like it. Maybe a little "AI Spread" would be a cure for our currently impotent and infertile offense.
autiger- I think the staff is throwing out everything they can think of to improve what is going on. Desperate times call for desperate measures. 1's on 1's is commen in the OL vs DL and WR's vs DB's. To go 1's vs 1's team is definitely unorthidoxed.
Eddie,
I know they've got to be trying everything can than think of. I just seems odd for them to be this lost. Maybe it goes back to trying to run an offense that isn't theirs, but it just came across to me as sounding very lost. And lost is not good for a senior staff 8 games in.
Watching HGTV house hunters right now,,,House is a rerun I have seen to many times....Where do people get the money for some of these homes..... I think I see why there are lots of foreclosures out there.
autiger- They are completely lost unfortunately. The problem we have on offense is that we have no leadership on the offensive coaching staff and we have no leadership on the offensive team. They are trying hard to gel and give game like situations to build confidence. Will it work??? I doubt it will work, but I have my fingers crossed.
Denny,
For the trick to landing that kind of money without much effort, just call 1-800-COACHTF.
I have heard several comments over the past two weeks in Auburn that the BOT has raised the money and they are just letting Tubbs hang in the wind. The theory is they seem to think that if he loses (which included WVU) the fans will rally to them to get him out. I have been looking for a statement to come out after UGA game.
It would be a huge mistake to send him packing. But the BOT has proven to be able to make AU look very bad in the media over the years. I hope they leave him alone for another year to let him right the ship.
Eddie,
I hope it does work. I've been watching AU football for a long time. It's been a long while since they looked this out of whack. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Tubs and I hope he gets next year to fix this, because I think he can, but right now its bad. And if he's got no one on the coaching staff that can lend any leadership to this situation, well thats sad.
Did anyone see Tulsa Sunday night? You guys may have discussed it, but they looked very good against UCF and kept there offensive numbers in tact. I know many will say that offense will not work in the SEC, but can it be any worse than what we currently are running? Look at who AU has recruited. Surely not many think we can run a power I with the recruits that have committed to AU so far.
I still think Malzahn would come to AU if offered and I think it would work well if he were here.
Did anyone hear the private detective on Sportsline this morning? I have tried twice today to ask but the threads keep moving. Was is just some crazy or is there any truth to the 6 players and recruiting?
what six players and whose recruiting?
Wootangclan- It has definitely been discussed here and most seem to like Mahlzan as OC. Just let him bring is staff (That's my opinon). But I would also like to expand that I bet most wanted Tony Franklin last year also, especially after Troy played Georgia. So be careful what you wish for.
War Eagle Girl- First, welcome. Second, expound of what you have heard. I haven't heard anything remotely like that.
Phred- Noticed in your Bio you are in construction. What type?
It was a private detective that does work for NCAA and is turning in a report about 6 players and recruiting violations for an unnamed school. John and Barry didn't pay any attention to him so was he just a crazy?
Any kind that anybody will pay me to do.
huh ... I didn't know that the NCAA hired PIs. I'm thinking he was a nut job.
Eddie-you are right. I was one that liked the hire. I was not one that actually was looking for him to get offered the job. However, as you stated, malzahn might work if he can bring his own staff. TF was not allowed to do that.
Isn't Shane Wasden the WR coach Troy? Was he there with TF? If so, I think he would have crawled to AU to be the WR coach.
i've been lurking for some time now....I guess I was the only one who heard it today.
AUTiger3, we are no longer running the Franklin offense. Sure, there are bits and pieces left, but we are basically going back to some of the Borges stuff. Right or Wrong, that looks like where it is headed. We will line up in the spread formation, but this isn't close to the Franklin offense.
eddie, I agree on the OC brining his staff. Tuberville could try to sell him on some of the barbeque bunch, but the new OC should have complete control over the offense. Tuberville should act in more of a managerial roll.
I believe you are correct wootangclan. Wasden is the WR coach at Troy. You would have to imagine he would love to return here. I'm affraid that we are going to end up with Pat Nix as OC. I want somebody to believe in, but maybe someone like Pat would be a good hire. I have no clue anymore. I just like to make guess and critize when they are wrong :)!!!
I was wondering what top teams have a head coach that also coaches a position? Exmaple that comes to mind is Saban (coaches BD's along with the asssitant). can you guys think of others.
I was wondering if by being that involved, it helped with rapport with the team?
Glad you stopped in War Eagle Girl. Now that you have signed up you will have to add a wacky picture to your profile :)!. I have a feeling that you heard some guy calling into a show just to stir something up.
Correction-Saban coaches BD's not BD's.
Spurrier coaching QB's comes to mind first. I believe Leach Coaches QB's also.
I guess I will get it right eventually. I will spell it out.
He coaches defensive backs.
Maybe I should preview the post first.
This comment has been removed by the author.
guess i was just hoping it might be something about that school up the road! I'll check in again...War Eagle!
Steve,
I realize that they are not running Franklin's O. Don't recall stating they were running CTF's O, but whatever. Whoever's it is, it's not really theirs (any of them). It's all basically borrowed stuff, right? Point was made earlier that people spend entire careers refining an offense. Whatever we're running, we don't have the original architect on staff. That seems to be a big part of the problem right now and it won't get better till next year. So, as I said, I'd love to see Tubs get next year with a new (hopefully better fit) OC to fix this.
Okay, I just watched the video. Jay G, I gotta ask this question. Does everyone around there seem as flat and whooped down as Burns and Byrum did?
Is it me or is he going to have to let go some friggin offensive coaches?
Re Pat Nix: he may be a good "fit" on this staff, but Miami hasn't been overly impressive. Not bad, but not great either. I'd rather have someone with a little more proven record against the type of competition we play every week in the SEC.
Autiger- Don't get me wrong, I don't want Pat Nix at all. I'm just wondering who Auburn can attract at the OC position realisticly. I'm affraid we end up Pat Nix or someone like that.
Chris- I believe there is a 100% chance we lose at least one offensive coach. I don't see any way around it.
I'm sure I'm the only one watching marshall/houston, but they are running text messages across the top of the screen. It's a hoot.
He needs to let some coaches go. Here's a question. Don't most assisstant coaches have some ambition to move up the ranks? I think I would. Isn't that what would drive them to keep working hard and improving thier respective areas/players? Our group of O assisstants is apparently content to just sit where they are. What's thier motivation to keep improving? I think from that perspective alone its time for some fresh blood.
Houston Nutt esque text messages Monica? That could be interesting. There are a few anchors here in Birmingham that I wouldn't mind pulling a Houston Nutt with.
Monica- I'm watching the Marshall game. I like the Green Helments. Looks good. There have been some doozy comments scrolling across.
Autiger- Some coaches are only going to be assistant coaches. I don't think that you will ever see Don Dunn, Terry Price, Ensminger, or Knox as a head coach or out right coordinator. Football is no different than any other business. You have people that you can count on and you are content to having them at that capacity because you know they will never progress to something more.
Eddie,
That was how I interpreted your post (that you didn't want Nix). Just adding my 2 cents.
I don't think we'll have a problem attracting a great OC. If Franklin is the oddball he seems to be, others in the coaching profession will know that and will realize (likely better than us) that the whole fiasco was not Tubs fault or doing. Also, it's a job at an SEC school that SHOULD be able to compete for the conference title yearly and it will pay nicely. And all these OC guys will think they have the answer and want to prove it. If they can turn this around they can pick the school they want to be an HC at.
That looks like David Gibbs on that 1997 Minnesota Staff that they just showed on the Marshall Game.
"running text messages across the top of the screen"
ESPN is getting desperate. Maybe there shouldn't be a Tuesday night game?
Good Point Autiger. That is what I keep telling myself. Come in and turn around Auburn's offense and then pick your HC'ing job.
are these texts from random people or what? that sounds kinda scary.
I suspect we can get a good OC, but I bet he wants a two year contract and his own staff. I got the impression from what Franklin said that Borges was also frustrated with the way things are run. Yes, I am reading a lot into it, but what the heck.
Eddie,
You're right, but sometimes you need someone with a little fire and drive in those positions. Like right now. I don't think our guys have that right now. Why should they? Just saying it wouldn't hurt to have a few young gunners on the staff.
Houston must be really bad because UAB beat Marshall.
I mean, UAB can barely line up correctly, much less win games.
Malzan? Why?
Sure, Malzan's O has worked this year --- so did Little Tony Franklin's high school offense.
Where's the difference?
they are from random people - our sorry butt governor is in the booth (even though he is a huge WVU guy) I should send a mean text.
I don't know about a young guy as OC (Norm Chow). I want someone with a proven track record (Norm Chow) that is wanting to stay for the rest of his (Norm Chow) career. I don't know that (Norm Chow) might be.
Steve- I don't think your Aubie can pass a drug test. I'm enjoying the changes.
Marshall is much better than what they did against UAB.
Norm Chow is good, but i don't think he has any desire to return to the South. He is really enjoying UCLA right now :)!
Okay, first I was blind, now I am on drugs. Who votes for me as OC?
I got around $6 Million reasons Norm Chow might want to head south.
Malzahn. Not sold. Our current offense would put up good number against Tulsa schedule thus far. They play Arkansas this week. Let's see how they do with that. That a bottom tier (ouch) SEC team. If they put up a ton of points on them I'll be a little more convinced. But I bet Arky beats Tulsa.
LOL Steve - Your eyes are bulging from too much kool aid!
Chow wouldn't take the phone call.
Lower your sights a bit. If AU can't afford to buy Tubs out, they can't pay an OC a million either.
Maybe the guy from Cincy or So. Florida?
I don't really know.
Umm, if they put up a ton of points on Arkansas, our suck rating will shoot through the roof.
Too much Coffee there, SteveFC.
Autiger- I put money that Tulsa puts more than 77 yards on the board against Arkansas by the start of the 4th quarter.
Love it Steve. Made me laugh dude.
Hotties, if the players didn't respond to the spread under Franklin, why would they respond to it under another OC?
Dude, our suck rating would have to be returned to the room to go BACK through the roof.
Chris-Malzahn just seems to able to put an effective offensive game plan together. It is very balanced and doesn't require the team to sell out on way or the other. I think he got a raw deal at ARK and could do a good job at AU. Maybe he is an up and comer. Just thought he should be one that is looked at. Maybe he won't work, but if AU is going to a version of the spread, he would be a good candidate to run it.
I do believe we are going to run a version of the spread next year if Tubbs stays.
Eddie,
They will no doubt do better than we did, but that's not saying anything at all. Qualification for next OC should be just do better than we did this year. Heck, most people on this board could do that. Point is, Malzahn's not tested. JMO.
They need new blood, new offensive assistant coaches. Same ole same ole no longer works.
Any number of reasons - the first two being wrong coach, wrong players.
"I mean, UAB can barely line up correctly, much less win games."
For a second there, I thought you were talking about us.
Good point Chris, at last report it had left orbit.
Fellas,
I'm watching the story of the Amityville horror documentary on the HISTORY Chan. - friggin creepy.
Anybody got a good home remedy for a sore foot?
The pain is localized to just behind where my three middle toes start at the foot.
Autiger- I'm just going by the requirements of last year's hire. That aside, Tubs will have to buy into whatever he decides to run. He can't try and modify it like he has done in the past.
I agree 100% Eddie.
By the way, do we have a number to put on the suck rating. Maybe we should create one so we can track it the rest of the year. Maybe if it improves (up or down?) that would help us all feel better.
No Phred, We can line up, we just have problems staying lined up till the snap :)!
Phred, we haven't reached UAB suckness just yet.
Monica, did I tell you that you have a very cool voice? I bet you were a good counselor.
To me the very most important thing is can the new OC recruit this area?
TALENT is lacking and we need the offensive players in the AU area excited.
You win with Jimmys and Joes not X's and O's.
I think what we had here was a failure to communicate. My guess is that Franklin came in and wasn't able to teach the coaches. It is one thing to teach a highschool coach while his lips are planted firmly on your buttocks, but to train a coach that has a ton of experience, tact is required. Franklin seems to be as subtle as a sledgehammer. I think that is basically where the problems began.
Mr. S, top or bottom of the foot?
My reason for thinking they will buy in next year is that most of the WR's and the QB we have committed all run the spread as far as I can tell. They are already sold on it. What really bothers me is that we beat out Troy, UAB, and FL Atlantic for too many of them.
Top of the foot.
Our suck rating on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the suckiest rating, I say we are scoring a high 7. If we give up putting a good first half in a game, we will be knocking on a 9 to 10 quickly.
Good documentary, Chris. Thanks for the tip.
Thank you very much, Mr. S. That's nice of you. :-)
Sorry, no idea for the top. Might could have helped with the bottom. Maybe just prop it on the end of a lazy boy and have a drink or six. Bet that helps.
