What We Learned, 10/14
Hey everyone. Thanks again for a swell campfire last night. It was the second-biggest day in terms of HABOTN traffic, so it's clear that the fire is spreading. I know a lot of you have said nice things about us and turned your friends toward this glowing mass of illumination, so thanks for that.
Let's take a gander at some stuff I keep hearing about. You're probably wondering about and/or hearing the same stuff.
UPDATE: ESPN.com's Mark Schalbach, a friend of the HABOTN, reports that Tommy Bowden is out at Clemson. Those Tigers are 3-3. A Bowden fired at mid-season? That never happens.
- Why did Auburn pass three times near the Arkansas goal line? Tuberville said Arkansas stacked the box and thereby prohibited a running play. I'm just telling you what he said.
- What is the deal with Barrett Trotter? He represents a fresh slate, which could be a good thing for Auburn. Trotter is a guy this staff really liked as a senior at Briarwood Christian this time last year. He's a kid with good stuff: Enough speed and a good arm. Is he ready for a major challenge? I don't see how anyone -- including coach Tommy Tuberville -- can know. Trotter has been running scout team for two months. I believe coaches are going to give him a legitimate shot this week and will remove Trotter's redshirt if they feel good about his practice work.
- What about Neil Caudle? Isn't he the third-team guy? Tony Franklin ripped Caudle earlier this year for being prone to interceptions, which is something Tuberville et. al. are trying to avoid. Caudle's path to playing time is clearer now than it was with Franklin in the fold, but I think Trotter has more upside and may be considered a more worthy player.
- Is Tuberville going to survive this? He could. Auburn is 4-3 right now. The rest of the season looks like this:
10/23: at West Virginia
11/1: at Ole Miss
11/8: UT-Martin
11/15: Georgia
11/29: at Alabama
How many wins do you see? UT-Martin is a gimme. Auburn will be a mild underdog at WVU and Ole Miss. It probably will be a major underdog against Georgia and Alabama.
Let's say Auburn splits em and goes 7-5. It may come down to which game represents the seventh win.
Considering what happened to Tommy Bowden today, Auburn finishing 7-5 with a loss to Alabama likely would spell the end of the Tuberville era here. There is one thing you always must consider: Tuberville is best with his back against the wall. It's a mistake to ever count him out.

And what did Bama do? Hire a damn good football coach.
Tubs prob already has his Iron Bowl Think Tank breaking down the film. He's gotta win this one.
We have now gone to multiple pages of comments.
It's kinda like a campfire.
But without Jay G.
Recognize a trend:
When it was Nix..we want Craig.
When it was Leard..we want Tillman.
When it was Leard...we want Gross.
When it was Cobb..we want Campbell.
When it was Cox...we want Burns.
When it was Todd...we want Burns.
When it was Burns...we want Cotton.
Now you idiots so caught up in whether or not Raymond Cotton, a sr. in high school, will keep his committment?
The back up QB is always the most popular guy on the team.
"When it was Leard..we want Tillman."
Who in the H is/was Tillman?
He's talking Allen Tillman. But he's a little off there. Leard was the only option in my book back then.
I'd say Campbell over Cobb proved correct. We wanted Cox for the first two yearsish until he had to play with a 5 lb bag of ice on his leg. I don't remember "When it was Leard we want Gross", I thought Gross quit because his future was in baseball. I think the only trend is the lack of a high quality QB, save Campbell.
I thought Leard replaced Gross.
Do I have that backwards?
...208 comments. That'll put the geezy in Jay Geezy....
Who the H cares, those seasons are in the books.
Okay, so I read a few and here's what I've got.
Jay G, spending 10 million just for the priviledge of searching for a new coach is silly in ANY economy.
However, building a 90 million dollar basketball arena is a phreaking brilliant idea.
And when Leard was good so was Malzone. And then he got "bad". And we hired Petrino who was good. Then Nallsminger took over and we really were awful. And then Borges came in and we were perfect. And then Borges went "bad". And here we are. We're here because Tubby has a knack for terminating the offense.
This has to be some kind of HABOTN record for number of posts.
Mr Sense, it was Leard and then Gross. Leard got hurt. But he was awful prior to that. Leard has an up and down career at Auburn. At one point, he couldn't even go home without fear of somebody waiting at his doorstep to kick his tail. But he won the job handily by his junior season and set a record or two.
You could build some nice new football facilities with $90M. Is it really that much, I thought it was much less.
I think that's the correct figure.
Mazzone was 1/2 of the scapegoat for the 2001 collapse.
If everyone remembers we went into the Arkansas game that year just needing to win 2 out of the last 4 SEC games (Ark, UGA, Bama, LSU) to go to Atlanta. We were 10 point favorites over Ark & Alabama and got slaughtered by both, beat UGA on a last second goal line stop and then lost in Baton Rouge.
After starting out 4-0 in the SEC with that big win over Florida, we went 1-3 the rest of the way and ended up losing to UNC in the Peach Bowl which was one of the worst offensive games we have seen until this year.
I'm not gay.
Unbelievable, you would think for $10M they could have done a great remodel on the coliseum.
rk, remember too well. Remember the Dansby play in the UNC game? That was his last game as safety. But, to your point, our offense sucked then as it does now.
Okay. Thanks Crudup.
I'll say this you your offensive coordinator history.
And then the dinosaurs came and they all died and turned into oil. And then the Arabs came and they all drove Mercedes Benzes.
I think Beard Eaves was beyond any renovations.
We don't even have a full sized practice court there.
State of the art jumbo tron though....
Dansby's interception and lateral to Thomas was the one highlight of that game.
I was there in the middle the UNC people and that was a rough game to watch.
The only Auburn people around me were cussing because Carnell was dressed out and they didn't play him.
that's good to know anon ... not that there's anything wrong with that.
What will become of the B-E?
Leard struggled in '98 and everyone wanted true freshman Gabe Gross....he played a good bid, stunk and Bowden got fired.
parking lot.
You may get me started on Gran and his goofy tailback rotation and evaluation over the years.
I'm guessing Beard Eaves will be a parking lot
That's a shame, VRGA.
Bigger shame is I actually care.
And it's football season.
Dang...
Leard's 1st start was against Virginia, and he threw and int and walked to the sidelines smiling... I threw a shoe at the TV.
Go for it Crudup.
That Dansby lateral was classic. One of my favorite plays I've seen.
I remember that game now RK. Thanks for bringing that up as we prepare to head back to that side of the country for what may be another whipping.
Ugg
They have to replace all the parking they're losing with the new development. They might be building a deck, but I don't know for sure.
Last I heard was the ground wouldn't support a deck in current condition, but who knows.
Things change daily. I just wait to be told and walk around the new construction each day.
Whoever told you that about the ground doesn't know very much.
Just in case you wondered what happened to Leard...
MYSPACE for LEARD>
I figured that was bull, Phred, but I don't know enough about that to know otherwise.
I can't believe it!
Incredible. I know today was pretty slow in terms of news, but we'll get some goodness tomorrow from defensive players. So perhaps that will provide ample satiation...
Jay G.
The Hotties are in force tonight!
I know I'm late to the party but wanted to back up Barkley on his comments earlier. Let's wait and see on Cotton. Really, let's not even discuss it at this point.
Oh yeah, I live in Mobile as well, and Faith couldnt beat a single public school in Mobile, and probably couldnt beat the bigger private schools around here (McGill, UMS, St. Pauls). Not even a chance.
I step away from my computer for a few hours to watch Monday Night Football and I miss over 100 comments. wowzers.
You're right hip-hop, we really shouldn't be talking about it, but there wasn't much else to talk about today. It got boring.
here's a good interview with Tubs today. Fox 6 from B-ham.
http://www.myfoxal.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail?contentId=7635073&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=1.1.1
Nothing really to say, but I want to be a part of this crazy large number of comments. Ummm, Cotton may be good or he may suck. Kodi may turn out awesome or he may always suck. No one knows. There it is.
Back to the pile!
lmao I don't remember anyone hollering to but Gabe Gross in the game. Things were so bad then it didn't matter who the QB was!! Ah, the glory days of Markeith Cooper and Demontray Carter... now THAT was some BAD football! I feel better about this team already! Woo!
I also don't remember anyone wanting Craig over Nix. Nix was a darn good QB. So was Craig.
I vote for Meiko Collier and Jim Bob Striplin.
THE MEANEST LOOKING AU QB
Mieko Collier actually played in the 98 UVA game after Leard's happy interception.
Then I don't think he ever touched the field again.
Sensible,
Thanks for showing how hideous those jerseys looked with the orange shade around the numbers.
