Jay Jacobs speaks again on Tuberville

Jacobs was on "Tiger Talk" tonight. Here is what he had to say about the chronology of Tuberville's resignation:
He showed me his plans possibly for the next coordinators. When he got through with that, he said, `What do you want me to do?' I said, `I want you to do whatever you think is best.' I was thinking he was thinking about the coordinators. I didn't know. He said, `Ten years is a long time.' He said he would talk to Suzanne and think about it.' He came back yesterday and said he thought the best thing for him and his family was to resign."

A list of OC and a comprehensive plan for improvement are different, I would think.

Could be, but as you can see Muschamp has sucked the fun out of the room. I guess the only BBQ left in town will be at Mike and Ed's. Good thing I preferred Navy because apparently orange is out too.

Coordinators. Plural.

I'd heard talk that Rhoads would not be back in 09. I guess this is confirmation.

Yeap Muschamp what's done is done. JJ and Gouge are the only big shoulders left to carry the burden

Plus, Tommy is not a guy to sit down with a PowerPoint presentation.

The idea of Tuberville laying out a "plan" makes me grin. That's not Tommy at all.

Jay on a scale of 1-10 how bad does this look from your professional, non-fan perspective?

What could these plans have entailed? I mean, beyond hiring new people?

"Well, we will work harder in two-a days and in the spring. Uhhh... we will recruit harder. We will just try really really hard. K?"

No more Tuberville can't win the big one.

No more Wingnut, my personal unfavorite as it makes fun of the man's rather charming ears.

No more catfish.

I wasn't ready for this...

You have to be ready for these things.

8:10 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Michael, for some reason when I imagine Tub talking to JJ about the plan it's just him reiterating his press conferences and JJ looking like he's hanging on every word.

8:10 PM
Blogger tigerfan44 said...

I'd heard talk that Rhoads would not be back in 09. I guess this is confirmation.

I was not wild about his defense but talk about not giving someone a chance. With the Offense the way it was and injuries on defense looks like he earned at least one more year. CTT must have seen something there with his D he didn't think was fixable.

8:12 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

How bad does this look?

Maybe a 4 out of 10.

As resignations go, it's par for the course. What you have to watch for is the other end ... when Auburn hires the next guy.

If that payment situation goes beyond $10 million total, look out.

8:12 PM

I just think he was ready to move on.

I sure hope we know soon. The ESPN ticker during the Rutgers game said we were up to 5 decommits. It would be great if the new HC had time to recruit a few of 'his' type players.

8:19 PM
Blogger Just Win AU said...

tf44, I wasn't high on his defense either. I know he had to plan around a lot of injuries, but geez. I guess I like to see the D playing like their hair is on fire.

For the suggestion that we blitz JPW, that would have likely made things worse. The problem we had was Coffee and blitzing just opens up holes for him. I suppose it couldn't have gotten worse, but in that situation, blitzing didn't make a lot of sense.

There were rumors about Tuberville and his wife having issues. I consider that none of mine or anyone else's business, but there is a distinct possibility that it influenced his decision.

12:11 AM
Blogger Mark said...

I think Leach would be successful (in year 3). First year would be 3-8. Second 7-5 and third probably 10-3.

Problem is, defense wins championships and he will not get a good D until year 8 or 9.

12:55 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ron, I know where you are coming from with regard to not having players for that type of offense, but I think that our athletes can be developed rather quickly. Even if you are against a Mike Leach hire, I think you'd be impressed with how he develops his receivers.

To quote a NYT article: "All have been conditioned to run much more than a football player normally does. A typical N.F.L. receiver in training might run 1,500 yards of sprints a day; Texas Tech receivers run 2,500 yards. To prepare his receivers' ankles and knees for the unusual punishment of his nonstop-running offense, Leach has installed a 40-yard-long sand pit on his practice field; slogging through the sand, he says, strengthens the receivers' joints. And when they finish sprinting, they move to Leach's tennis-ball bazookas. A year of catching tiny fuzzy balls fired at their chests at 60 m.p.h. has turned many young men who got to Texas Tech with hands of stone into glue-fingered receivers."

1:13 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Mark, with our current defensive players plus Gray and Freeman next season, we should be very sound defensively. Doolittle is the biggest loss with graduation. Our secondary will be experienced and deep. The only big issue might be with the tackles and the size of the tackles. Marks will be good, but we need a big guy to go with him.

1:23 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just think of all the love we'd get from Donald Trump if Auburn were to hire Mike Leach. We might get that indoor practice field after all :-)

1:24 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's shortsighted and shows a lack of open mindedness for some to dismiss a Leach hire. There are few candidates that inspire excitement out there, but Leach is one of them. Is he like Tommy? No, but we need to get past that and move into the future.

6:22 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

SteveFC makes a good point on the defense.

However, learning to tackle, I posit, will also improve the defense. Hopefully that was a young and worn out thing.

6:23 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

If Senderick Marks goes pro, he's a bigger loss than Doolittle.

It's not shortsighted to think that Leach's style could possibly be exposed in the SEC and that as a person he might find it difficult fitting in at Auburn.

6:34 AM
Blogger ron mexico said...

I just don't see that much difference from leach and franklin. Yeah leach is probably a little bit smarter and a slightly a better coach, but as far as being a weirdo socially awkward loner who runs a high school offense that consists of less than ten plays, they are identical.

From what Jay and others have said, there is a good chance both Marks and Coleman will leave early. I know some on here feel different, but the d-line looks much weaker to me next year without Doolittle, Marks and Coleman. You just can't plug in D-lineman to replace 1st and 2nd round draft picks. Also, still don't understand all of the hand-wringing over P Rhoads. This D has looked much better under different coaches in the past, and I think he could be replaced.

How is AU Supposed to Win Without You?
To the Tune of How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?

I could hardly believe it
When I read the news from Jay
I wanted to hear it straight from you
The Jays said you were leavin'
You didn’t want to coach another day
From the look of what’s coming back next year I can see it's true
So tell me all about it, tell me 'bout the all the changes you were makin'
Then tell me one thing more before you go

Tell me how is AU supposed to win without you?
Now that you've been coachin' here so long
How is AU supposed to win without you?
How is AU supposed to carry on
When all the winning is now gone?

I know you don’t want to see us cryin'
Can’t we just forget this year’s breakdown
Our chances to win the SEC are coming to an end
An how can I blame you, Tommy
When we hated every move you made
And criticized you for hanging close to your coaching friends
And we don't wanna face the price we’re gonna pay for wishing
Wishing you would leave and then you did
Tell me how is AU supposed to win without you?
Now that you've been coachin' here so long
How is AU supposed to win without you?
How is AU supposed to carry on
When all the winning is now gone?

Tell me how is AU supposed to win without you? (Don’t let ‘em hire the pirate, Tommy)
Now that you've been coachin' here so long (Don’t let ‘em hire some coordinator either)
How is AU supposed to win without you? (NOT Spurrer!)
How is AU supposed to carry on
When all the winning is now gone? (Promise me, Bama isn’t going to own us for a decade...)

We desperately need some strong recruiting to pull out of the tailspin that is current AU football. I see no chance of him as HC however, strictly asking as a(highly-paid) assistant.

I read the AJC article on Rodney Garner's interest this morning in the AU JOB. Towards the middle-bottom of the article they are claiming Leach has already say "no thanks" to AU. Any truth to this you reckon?

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I'm all for Paul Johnson.

I'm ok if Rodney comes back as recruiting coordinator.

Keep up the good work!

Eddie,

Have no idea how far y'all stayed away from Saban..

However, I want Johnson to have the same shot of getting the Auburn job as Terry Bowden currently does.

Gang, I just can't see Paul Johnson moving from Tech after only one year. Besides, he's got a chance to win the ACC sooner than the SEC.

Just my opinion.

Michael,

I believe you left out the most important part of my post........

It's very Monica like to twist someone's words and use it against them.

Agree Sensi

But IMO, he is one heckuva coach in all seriousness.

He was my personal 2nd choice when we got Saban.

8:37 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh, he's a great coach. He hung around Navy a lot longer than I thought he would. So, I get the feeling he's pretty loyal. But who knows?

it only took Paul Johnson one year to beat Jawga. i'm down.

8:42 AM

He needs a good defensive coordinator to come in with him, but Paul Johnson might be the best guy out there.

Which means we probably won't contact him.

So the Houston Chronicle is really stoking the Leach rumors this AM. I will provide a link if Jay G. doesn't object.

Maybe we need a coach rumors thread Jay? Like the radio rumor thread from a couple of days ago.

Good idea James:

Tom Luginbill on Paul Johnson:

"'Paul Johnson's scheme fits Auburn's talent: a run-first quarterback (in Kodi Burns) who's athletic enough and a strong roster of good running backs. I'm telling you, Nick Saban and the rest of the conference don't want to prepare for that offense. You can't do it in three days because you don't see it enough

Hey, let's stir it up again in here... I still think Jay1 was somewhat lying in yesterdays press conference!

Blogger michael said...

Didn't Bowden "resign" also? I am beginning to see a pattern here.

8:50 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Mr. S- I agree that I think Paul Johnson is a loyal guy, but I also believe that he only had a one year contract with Tech, I wish someone could confirm that. I do believe he only makes $1.5 Million per year and I don't believe GT has the funds to call nearly as much as Auburn would offer. It would be a cash situation / ego thing for him to come to Auburn, but I don't think it is impossible.

8:52 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Michael- Anytime some pays you to quit, especially as much as Auburn pays coaches, they can call it whatever they want to call it.

8:54 AM

Ga Tech has a 55,000 capacity stadium and is definitely an afterthought in the town they are in. Why would he not be tempted by Auburn? Not just for the money but for the big time college experience?

Johnson on Friday agreed to a seven-year deal worth more than $11 million, Tech athletics director Dan Radakovich said.

Friday being 12/07

The more I think about this whole "resigning" business, the more it just doesn't add up, and the madder I get. Right now, there's no way that I'm buying that he wasn't "fired." Just one man's opinion FWIW...

Just cynical when it comes to the PTB making the right hire. I hope they prove me wrong.

Dennis Dodd from CBS Sportsline is apparently reporting that Muschamp turned Auburn down.

This is the kind of crap that drives me crazy..

Just because you check the interest level of someone doesn't mean you are going to offer the job to them. At any rate you still get all of these "so and so turns X school down".....They weren't even offered the job!

Rant over.

FSJ I seriously doubt you would be happy to get 'fired/resign' from a job where you gave your heart and soul for 10 years. CTT was already rich. That doesnt compare to the relationships that he loses with players, coaches and his community when he moves.

9:11 AM
Blogger coosa said...

Covingtontiger - The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to think that JJ is basically telling the truth. Now obviously the fact that they didn't give Tubs a strong vote of support on Monday had a lot to do with his resigning, but I'm thinking now that he probably did resign and they would have kept him if he hadn't. He just realized he would be in an impossible situation and decided to go.

The fact that they paid the buyout doesn't necessarily mean he was fired. There is nothing worse than having an employee around who is there only because their contract requires it. I've been through that, and it doesn't work. Imagine this conversation:

Tub: I think I'll just quit.

JJ: Fine, you don't get a dime.

Tub: In that case, I'll stay. But I'm going on a 2 month duck hunt. I'll check back in on signing day to see how we're doing. I think we'll skip spring practice this year - who needs it?

Of course, no such conversation took place, but the idea of having a coach around who didn't really want to be there was certainly not in Auburn's interest, and from that standpoint, as the "right" thing to do for the school.

Moral of the story is that buyouts are usually really good for coaches and really bad for the school.

Coosa if JJ had every intention to get CTT through the next 5 years why not give more public support throughout the season when they were questioned? I'm an Auburn Man and will gladly drink the AU kool-aid and tow the AU company line, but dont spit on my boots and tell me it's rain.

Wrong PDWT,

You are thinking about Demontray Carter I guess.

Markeith finished his college career at AU in 1999 and actually had a pretty goood season for us that year. Actually scored a TD vs Bama in 99.

Demontray Carter went on to lead those Troy (State) Trojans passed Jackie Sherrill and Miss. St.

Not looking forward to Jimbo, to say the least.
