Sunday update

Hey everyone. I hope you're enjoying your NFL Sunday. Or your Christmas Shopping Sunday. Or whatever you're doing this fine Sunday.

I talked earlier today with DeMarco McNeil, the former Auburn defensive tackle who spent the 2008 season as the team's graduate assistant. He spent two seasons playing for Gene Chizik, spent a season coaching at Auburn and grew up in Mobile.

Could his affable personality and lower Alabama roots make him the kind of dogged recruiter Chizik needs in lower Alabama?

McNeil is hoping.

``I'm just waiting to see what happens," McNeil said. ``I love Auburn. I'd love to stay at Auburn."

Chizik is expected to begin taking tangible steps toward assembling his staff this week. He spent the past six days -- the first six days of his tenure -- trying to repair damage done to the program's recruiting efforts.

Tuberville's sudden departure and the subsequent fallout created tension that Chizik has been trying to soothe. He has met with high school coaches in at least four states since being hired on Dec. 15.

Scott I agree with the Gill thoughts. This was a regime change and no coach had a change unless he planned to bring Dye's boys back in power with him.

5:03 PM
Blogger scottatl said...

The more I look at it from a strictly Auburn perspective....when people say' why do you have to bring someone in who has ties to Auburn?, just look at Florida with Urban Meyer etc....well Florida is Florida and Auburn is Auburn. you have to work a little harder to succeed at Auburn (and you can succeed) so you cant just bring in the next best thing and know it will work. I think the powers that be saw Turner Gill and said it can either go really good or really bad (see ty willingham at UW).

Blogger AUBigCat said...

I think once we get the pick for the OC, we will have a better idea of how successful this will be initially. I still think it was a mistake for AU to pick a defensive coach as opposed to an offensive hc. Style points determine NCs these days and you dont get style points for defense.

5:25 PM

I dont know much about him as an OC prospect. What are your thoughts on him?

5:30 PM
Blogger scottatl said...

Well he has trained under Jerry Moore (app state), Saban, and Richt. I would see him more of a running game guy which is fine but we HAVE to get a guy who can make the defenses at least fear the pass

BigCat - Jacobs seems pretty solid to Auburn. His biggest problem is his earrings are too big for his ears. Not sure why Chizik wasn't able to make their visit today, but Joe Whitt and Jimmy Perry were there and talked the Chiz up pretty good. Seems to have impressed him with his former-player love. Nothing will work like getting Chiz there which I think he's going to try to do on Jan 5.

Man, Mark Richt sounds like a Bobby Bowden clone with his guilt trip comments aimed at Searels:

“When I was at Florida State, I coached quarterbacks there for a good long while and I turned down multiple offensive coordinator positions because I didn’t think it was the right fit. As I was the coordinator, there were some head jobs that I wasn’t interested in. There were some lateral moves that I was asked to check my interest in. Just wasn’t interested. For me the quality of life for me and my family was really, really big. I was at a great place where I got to coach great kids and was working for an outstanding man. I just wasn’t in a hurry to disrupt that for a title or X amount of dollars.”

Quote from Reggie Slack(Former Auburn Quarterback 1986-1989)

"If asked whether or not I agreed that Auburn was a racist institution with a plantation –like mentality, I would have to answer a resounding “No”. My answer is based simply on my experience as a player for 4 years and as an alumnus since. In taking this position, it doesn’t mean that I support every decision that the athletic administration has made. I think that there have been some mistakes made in the past as far as leadership, the hiring of coaches, and the treatment of former players, but this does not make Auburn University a racist institution.

"I was one of the first black quarterbacks to play at Auburn. During my tenure as a starting quarterback, I think that I received all the recognition and accolades that could be expected. When I left Auburn and was drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1990, I was perturbed at not being drafted higher, but I attribute that totally to the prevailing atmosphere present in the NFL concerning black quarterbacks and not to any stigma attached to me by Auburn University.

"I still feel today that Auburn is one of the finest universities in the country with some of the most supportive Alumni and loyal fans that one could ever hope to play in front of. I cherish my experience at Auburn and only wish that everyone could know just how special a place it truly is.

"I think that we as former players need to get behind our new coach and support this program in a positive way. We helped build this program and it would be a disservice to ourselves, our families, and to the institution that has helped mold us into the men we are today, to sit by idly and allow it to disintegrate in front of our eyes."

"no, that's just Reggie Slack."
Either he was a spittin' image, or the Rx on the Beer Goggles needed adjusting.
Come to think of it, a lot of people looked different the next morning after a night at the supper club!

The women are having a great yearso far! I hope they keep it up!

Ok so that's a horrible thing to have happen. I've always wondered why all the wrestler's went somewhere else. My son wrestled at Collins Hill in Atl. and won the state one of the years he wrestled. Talk about a sport!! It's a shame that it got the axe, because I imagine a lot of kids would have stayed in the southeast.

Let me make that clear Collins Hill won state that year, he was a sophomore, and got invited to go with the team. He actually got to wrestle state the next year. Yeah it's a proud pops thing.

Jermaine Johnson may be signing with Miami. This showed up in an article on al.com saying nothing would likely be announced for a while in terms of a staff. This would be a big loss at a position where I think we need help.

Blogger Denny Crum said...

As much as I like my friends that are T-roy fans. Please stop saying that you could beat Auburn this year. As poorly as Auburn was this year, Auburn still beat LA-Monroe and Southern Miss very convincingly this year.

Blogger James in Auburn said...

Actually I am looking forward to following tonight's game.

Alabama State can play some ball and it wouldn't surprise me in the least for this to be a close game (it was last year). It will be interesting to see if Auburn is a bit flat coming of the Virgina win.

Auburn has a chance to go on a nice little run here going into conference play.

10:41 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Yea Jermaine Johnson will be the biggest loss of all of our decommits. He could have made an immediate impact

I do hope that Chaz Ramsey will decide to return. We lose two linemen to graduation, Bosley and Greene. There are players to step in, but a bit of depth there would be nice.

Of more concern will be the defensive line. Dolittle being gone is a big loss in terms of depth. Should Marks head to the NFL we will be hurting there.

11:01 AM
Blogger Jeremy Eubanks said...

any word on when Chaz will be making his decision? Has he talked to the Chizinator yet?

11:10 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

We have some good young DL talent that would have seen time this year if not for injuries. Bosley will be a huge loss at center. We have a recruit coming in at that possition but he is like 255 lbs and not ready of SEC play at that position and weight imo. I hope we go the Juco route with some of our OL needs

11:15 AM
Blogger michael said...

I think this years recruiting will be just about worthless. Hopefully Chizik is successful next year, and if so then we should tear it up. Recruits who want playing time will start showing up.

11:21 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agreed, AUBigCat, we need some BIG, TOUGH O-lineman!

11:31 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

I think if we just held on to everyone we have left and added a big LB or two and another quality OL this class would be fine and still in the top 25. The coaching staff will be the most important commits we get this year imo. They will need to really coach up the WRs & QBs we have and get the RBs back on track.

11:49 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Denny ... at the end of the season, I don't know if I would be so confident of our ability to take down Troy and Southern Miss ... except that Troy might -- ahem -- get a football lodged in its throat, as it did last night.

11:55 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am assuming Chizik is showing recruits the same plan he showed Jacobs, including his plan for who the position coaches will be. I have seen blogs saying that Chizik likely already knows most of his staff, which is certainly a possibility.

I am hoping to see Auburn become Runningback U again. It will be tough without Nall and Gran, but it can still happen. I can see Tate or Fannin achieving star status with the right offensive scheme. Tate needs work on getting to the corner quicker. Fannin needs to be more consistent. We shall se how it goes.

I believe it all starts wit hthe staff. If the yare all on the same page and committed to the scheme that's going to be used, there will be success. Just look at Tech. Of coursed they also had the fortune of getting a coach that has been there and done it on many levels. But I do believe common purpose and that feeling of playing for the good of all mankind we will have the ability to save the world from evil and tyranny. Oooops, this Captain AU avatar is stronger than I thought.

I watched some of the UGA/GT game the other night. I do admire that Paul Johnson offense and think he would have fit well at Auburn. I have heard rumors he was the top candidate but didn't want to change jobs again so quickly.

Regardless of who comes in as the OC, we need to get back to Auburn football, which starts with a Grecko Roman punch to the head type offense. I use to like it when Tuberville said we needed to be able to run when they know we're going to run. The best example was when we played Penn State in a bowl game many years ago. Caddy was out, so Ronnie Brown lead the show. Penn State has some all world runningback. I think his last name was Johnson. Ronnie destroyed Penn State. I want to see Auburn do that again.

I don't know that I would call Johnson a huge disappointment - he has had two 1700+ yard seasons. But the last couple of years he has certainly declined more rapidly than expected.

It is stinkin cold in Alabama today. What's it like in West Va?

Before this year, he had back to back 1700 + yard rushing seasons.

So far Larry Johnson has had a better career than Carnell or Ronnie.
