Update from the Plains

According to a statement released by Auburn spokesperson Kirk Sampson on Monday night, Tuberville met with school officials on Monday.

Here is the statement:
President Gogue, Jay Jacobs and Coach Tuberville did meet Monday to have their annual end of the season meeting. Further conversations between Jay Jacobs and Coach Tuberville will take place in the following days to discuss Coach Tuberville’s plan to make improvements for the program moving forward under his leadership.

I just googled 'Auburn New Coach' and it spit out this beauty from the New York Times

Pat Dye Named Auburn's Coach
UPI
Published: January 4, 1981
Pat Dye, who resigned as the Wyoming football coach last month, was named Auburn's coach today. He received a four-year contract.

Dye, 40 years old, a star lineman at Georgia and a former assistant to Paul (Bear) Bryant at Alabama, succeeded Doug Barfield, who resigned on Dec. 1 after a 5-6 season. The selection of Dye came one month after Coach Vince Dooley of Georgia had spurned a reported $225,000-a-year offer to return to his alma mater as coach and athletic director.

''I am extremely happy to be back in Alabama - Auburn, Ala., that is,'' Dye said. ''I'm glad to be back in an area where football means so much to the people. People in Wyoming are talking about rodeoing in July, while people in Alabama are talking about the Alabama-Auburn game.''

Dye's contract includes a clause that prohibits him from moving from Auburn to coach at Georgia or Alabama before the four years of the contract expire.

Bad publicity?..Not so much... Tennessee just fired one of the longest tenured and winning-est current sec coaches. If the national media has a story it's Miss. St. who just fired the first and only black head coach in the sec..it would be a blip on the radar.

Board Member Support?...Not so much...he got the best of the most powerful board member and rubbed it in his face by taking vengeance on his puppets.

Fan Support?...Not so much...this season has taken care of that.

Too much money..Bama has made back their investment just with the sale of car flags..bandwagon riders have deep pockets when times are good (so do actual supporters).

I'm not saying I want him fired I am just saying if thats what THEY are going to do then now is the time.

WarTiger, I appreciate what Tubs has done in terms of a clean program and such, but besides 2004-2006, the record shows what we are in store for if he stays. We haven't recruited the talent that led to 2004-2006 and I don't see it coming. We were many things this season, and outcoached was one of the biggest ones. That falls on him.

He may get more time, but I think it's time for a change.

Boys. Monica. The sarcasm is beautiful. I use it as a method of communicating all the time. But let me say something.

I had a smile on my face about 30 minutes after 36-0, no 72-0, finished up. Right then and there I knew something wonderful had just happened.

#1 it was over. The season. The streak. The never ending guessing game of how these two programs "actually" match up.

Most importantly complacency had run its course. It's done. Dramatically finished. Smell ya later.

What's left is shame, embarassment, anger, and gashed and knarled pride. And that makes me, not hopeful, but assured. Assured that the end of fat, rich and happy is over.

I've been into this thing for years. Been attending AU games since '78. I've seen a lot of things happen in this rivalry as have many of you all. And I know, based on this "top this, top that" rivalry, that things are about to get extremely interesting.

If you're a fan, if you're a writer, you just found yourself at the beginning phase of a rekindled flame. An opportunity has presented itself.

These two programs occasionally wilt. But they won't die. And they won't let the other one enjoy the limelight regardless of the price.

Here's to hoping nobody lands in NCAA jail in the near future.

Cheers.

I don't see why he deserves another year. People say well look what he did when he got a second chance after jetgate, but he should have been playing for a N.C. that year along with the next. He had super talent but his coaching hire or lack thereof was his downfall now he has done the exact same thing again. I can take someone making mistakes as long as its not the same big one over and over. Unfortunately for him the time is perfect now to make a change with the least damage to the program.

The ironic thing is they could just say, okay, it is your baby. We are not paying the buyout and we are already paying to offensive coordinators. Not only do you need to coach, you need to come up with the money to pay another one.

On top of that, no more renewals. we will be happy to find a coach in waiting so we can quit with the auto-renewal crap, but this is the last contract you will get here.

I want tubs to stay, rework his staff and start going out and getting some highly reguarded skilled players on offense... mainly because i don't trust the people in charge of hiring coaches, and i know we have a good coach right now.

If they decide to get rid of tuberville, they better get someone just as good or better. I don't see that many possible names out there that match that criteria.

In other words if they give tuberville the boot, they had better have butch davis' name on a dotted line somewhere. Anything else is a huge gamble.

9:17 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Kristina- I think you hit the nail on the head. The Auburn nation is divided and it will continue to be divided if Tubs stays. Tubs will never have this fanbase clearly behind him, no matter how well he does. If you change coaches, then the people taht supported Tubs will get behind the new coach more so than the people that didn't support Tubs. We are divided right now, and to me, Tubs has done it to himself.

Saban is Saban, Faker. And he had a huge opportunity to sell immediate playing time with an "I've been there before" marquee. And the timing has been a thing of beauty.

If you could have put a price tag on Auburn's 2000 class, for example, most would have ranked it first. Fact is Tubs has built programs from the ground up. He can do that.

But my initial post doesn't exactly suggest Tuberville will do the recruiting. Patience, my by. Patience.

Hi guys. Just got in.
I think Tubby has to go, reasons all have said. Too much water over the bridge. No way he gets the AU nation together again on the same page. We will always be divided as long as he's there. Especially the money guys. Also, Who will come to work for Tubby knowing he is likely to have one or two more years? We won them all in 2004, so that year and the next would be the time to clean up in recruiting. How is it then that we look at this team and there are no playmakers. No Ronnie Browns, Caddy's, McGlovers, etc. No big time linebackers. 2004 and 2005 recruits? Where are they.

The only way to get an SEC school's fan base 100% behind a coach is to do exactly what Saban has done - contend for a NC almost immediately.

Never contended for most of the players that had all the other SEC schools after them.

Craziness ... not that Tommy's on his way out, but some of the names being floated.

The bad thing is, I look at how Alabama is playing with a ball control running offense and a killer defense and think "hey, that's what I want Auburn to be".

Saban's style of football as won games since football was created. Winning the line of scrimmage and controling the clock and playing hard nosed D will beat any fad offense, any new scheme, anything. If you have the basics and good fundamentals and decent talent you'll win football games.

I hate Alabama, but I've always been impressed with the type of football Nick Saban puts on the field.

The thing I'd worry about with Petrino, look at what he left in Louisville after going through John L. Smith's players.

9:40 PM

Make no mistake about Lavoyd James out of Williamson. This guy is not one to leave behind. He's smallish, Prothro size, but lightning fast and excellent hands.

Heavens? Eh...

Ledarius Perkins is a keeper. He could make the rotation as a kick returner in Tristan's place next season.

You have Stallworth out of MS who is an athlete that can be a receiver in any type of offense. Keep him.

What's missing is the big, athletic WR. That's what Auburn needs.

Eddie ... those that I consider my best, most reliable sources of into are saying the same thing. My guess is that we talk to some of the same folks.

I've always been a Petrino fan ... he may be a mercenary, but guess what, most all of them are now.

I question whether we can get him.

So my next choice is Johnson. I think he's got the hard-nosed nature I like. I am coming around on his offense's ability to be successful in BCS football.

Nutt would be third, but I am a fan. I like his energy, enthusiasm. Giggity.

I'd take any of them right now.

It's interesting we're talking about three coaches who are in their first year on their current jobs. Who-da thunk it?

Crudup- I believe Tubs would have to restructure his contract to get more money to hire assistants. Everything that I have read regarding him staying would be that he would not get much money to make changes since we are paying for his mistakes already and that his contract would not be rolled over at the end of each season. Pretty much making the noose around his neck almost unbearable.

Am I crazy to read this as there is a good chance he will stay? I have been wrong before. But haven't we heard they will force him to make changes on the offensive staff? It would make sense they would give him some sort of ultimatum today and give him a day or two to think about it as far as firing assistants.

9:48 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think any of those names are reasonable or will happen. I think this is uniquely a situation that bodes well for Tubs regardless of my opinion on his worth. He can't coach Xs and Os. But he can hire people that can. He's always, ALWAYS only been as good as his coordinators.

9:48 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Crudup- That is definitely the list of names that are being tossed around time and again from people that fairly accurate in the past. I put a little stock in those names, but like I said, I just don't understand Petrino's name. I want to know how?

Eventually you fire and move coaches so much that someone has to make the decision it's not the assistants who need moved anymore.

Just sayin'.

Think big picture with me on this:

Recruiting is all about marketing. UAT landed the ATL game to market itself in GA. They landed it again with Vatech (I think it is final) to market itself in GA. Saban recruits the #1 class but has a few that everyone knows will not go there. I think the two baseball players were signed knowing they would not go but it increased the class rating. Probably had a coupl;e of others, though not for sure, that they knew would never ever qualify, but sign them to get the rating up. If you look at the class now, they are a top 10, maybe a top 5 (probably are) but not #1. However, networks all talk it up as him having the #1 class. He is a marketing man and can sell it better than Mal Moore ever could.

Au needs that type of guy. Always looking at the big picture.

Jay-do many of the bloggers here assume you tell all to us before you write for the paper. Not accusing anyone, but was just wondering since it seems we all feel we know you and I think a lot think you would tell 'just us'. Ya know what I mean?

well, the point is... with such a vague statement its anyones guess. But the simple fact that the percentage went from 25% to 78.33% is telling. I am not a fan of instability, but at this point it seems to me like the PTB are looking at their options and seeing what will work.

It's so true: Reporters can't just spew all the information they get. A lot of it isn't printable. Sometimes, people don't want information out. Sometimes, I'm not 100% sure it's legit so I wait. That's just how it goes.

I certainly don't see it as a doom statement. It completely lines up with what Spina said weeks ago, and everyone saw his statements as an endorsement. If they are forcing changes, the decisions would take longer than a clear firing or a clear endorsement with the freedom he had before.

So, just me and my awesomeness guessing, I think Tubs will be here next year.

Hey Jay, quite awhile ago you said you were going to write a story on Quentin Groves' feelings on his NFL experience thus far. Did you get around to that? You got a link to it?

Jay-maybe you can answer this, if not I understand:

In the campfire you said your odds went up but you were just guessing, but coming from you, many would think you know something and just can't relay that info. So, my question would be, is your guess like the rest of the bloggers that no nothing or is your guess based on something you just can't tell us yet?

Not sure that is a fair question, but had to ask.

wootangclan, I am certain Jay's WAG is more educated than our WAGs just because he has more info. Obviously he can't share everything, especially is someone specifically asked him not to. For those still on board, what names are worth pursuing for OC. i've mentioned Malzahn from the get go and get shot down everytime. I would take Gus Malzahn or Chuck Long as my top two for now.

What do you think?

Steve-I agree. Many times I am out of the loop and especially coming in late to the camp fire. I only saw the increased % and thought I missed something really big and could not get caught up. However, sometimes he gets rollin' pretty good with you guys and I can't tell what is comedy or truth.

10:43 PM

wootangclan, Muschamp is definitely not the answer. We don't need a Mike Shula on the job training guy. Whoever is the coach next year must have significant experience. They will be competing against Saban, Miles, Petrino, and Nutt. That is just in the SEC West. Whoever MSU gets will not likely be top notch, but I consider all 4 of those top notch coaches. We shouldn't settle for Muschamp.

We put the Christmas tree up tonight. While unpacking ornaments, I uncovered some old newspapers we stuffed into the boxes for cushioning. The newspaper page I saw was post-Peach Bowl glowing reviews of the Franklin offense. I mean, the players were so high on it. Imagine how good it could be after a spring and two-a-days!

What happened? Who? Why? How? asdfjhdf???????? How did we get here?

I don't think Muschamp is the answer and stated so when his name came up. It's just that several PTB (according to some posts here)like him and his energy, and his name hasn't been mentioned in a while. I don't think he will stay at Tx until Brown steps down. just thought that he might be on the move and everything is hush, hush.

Tuberville just finished his 10th year at Auburn. He has an 85-40 (64.0%) overall record on the Plains and a 51-29 (63.8%) mark in SEC contests.

This is not fantastic. 14% above .500. That means ... just above average. Is this success?

Good deal. I just went there. Did much better as an OC.

Well, we didn't solve anything so I guess the watch continues on Tuesday. I would bet Tubbs stays, but if the players do not buy in, we are lost for a while. Just not sure he can get us over the 8-4 hump we seem to be stuck in.

I like him, but look around and several coaches have been canned for doing about the same. makes you wonder

Make the case for Butch. Why should he be the guy? His record at Miami isn't that much better than Tubs record at AU (not including the fiasco this year). And, as you said, NC didn't really finish the job this year.

Why Davis? My opinion:

Bucth Davis took over Miami after the program was dismatled by probation. Look up their sanctions and you'll see, the NCAA hammered them.

He did it clean. He did it with class and actually had the Miami Hurricanes ACTING right.

Secondly, he has recruiting ties in AU's most important areas. Ddavis' florida/Ga/La connections would help AU tremendously becuase - as usual - bammer will get all the Bammer kids it wants. AU must hold on to its SO. Florida connections and have a man with the name & resume to get in the door in other high schools. (( Look what the man has done in UNC)).

His name will compete with Saban's name. His connections to the Cowboys, Miami & the NFL will get him in recruits' homes.

He built the Miami program into a National Champion against stiff odds.

He can coach. He can recruit and he seems to do it the right way.

Blogger au0608 said...

I am a fan of Davis because he maintains a level of credibility that Tubs has established. Its a sense of continuity with the opportunity to advance. He has had experience at the college and the pro level, and he has done well (not excellent) with a North Carolina that was in the dumps. Hes not the ACC champ there this year, but hes making improvements over the previous staff at a school that competes with several other in state and out of state schools for players.

I have always been a Tuberville supporter, and to see him go would be a letdown, but at this point I dont know that another season is going to be helpful when the past 3 saw continued decline (mostly on offense). If he couldnt turn it around then, what makes this season any different.

I dont like the idea of Tuberville not being on the sidelines, but I also think that in the coaching profession as it stands today, change is good. Look at how Nutt's move has given his career new life. Granted, we are not as dysfunctional as Arkansas, but I think that sometimes its best for both parties to shake hands and move on.

I think Davis can be successful in recruiting across the Southeast, bring an instant credibility (in himself), and maintain the level of respect and dignity that Tuberville created in the program.

I believe the whole Auburn situation has reached the point of no return.
No way CTT can return and have any control over the program or his own destiny. The fans are divided and split over what to do and the chronic mismanagement/mishandling of situations since 2003.

We need a clean break.
Fresh start.
New and vibrant/energetic blood.

Handle names are somewhat anon, but at least I have a history with Michael to know that his is hilarious and good natured guy, or that Kristina set up the facebook group. Building that relationship gives you credibility. Anon gives you none, whether if you really know or now.

First off, I was asked to make my case for Davis.

Secondly, umm yeah. Woah....yeah. UT is a much better job with Urban Myer and Florida sucking like they doand UGA being as bad as they've been. And if he's scared of Saban, I guess UT playing Saban every year would be just as bad as him being across the state.

What was I thinking?

Steve Spurrier's a chump......well.

There's no recruiting base for UT and if someone asked around he'd see that.

Very simple, UNC is the KY of the ACC.

Butch Davis is second fiddle at that school and that will NEVER EVER change.

People post here anonymously all the time. Point is, there is no need to jump someone for that. Believe what they say if you want. Or don't. Maybe they can't or shouldn't say who they are. Maybe they know something that they want to share without compromising a source. I don't know. But no need to jump on people for posting anonymously.

11:52 PM
Blogger WDCWE said...

They do, and for the most part what they say doesn't get noticed. If you have a question you want to ask, or make a point on an argument, then posting anon is fine. Posting "inside information" is just ridiculous.

Well they shouldn't be sharing in the first place. I hope Auburn isn't stupid enough again to trust JetGate like information with people who want to leak it to everyone before Auburn University makes a state. My only point about posting anon is that it has no credibility. It is just speculation.

12:02 AM

CCR,

I get your point. "Inside Info" posted anonymously must be looked at skeptically, but sometimes that's the only way it gets posted. May be that there is some clue in what was posted that would tip off who posted it, for those that know enough to read between the lines. That is to say, anon's post may mean more to some than it does to you. Just a thought.

Ok, I am really sorry this has gotten to be a stupid argument.
On a lighter note, what is funny about it is that I used to post on here using my real name, but too many of my friends yelled at me for it and said that I was going to get my identity stolen or that someone was going to track me down... Wait, is that a knock on my door?

12:08 AM
Blogger WRB3 said...

Chris,

I think AU is a great job. I think UT could be a great job also. They have, in the past, competed with those other progams. And they have some national recognition (or at least they did).

I think any coach would love the chance to come here and knock Saban down a notch or two, wouldn't want someone who didn't think they could.

Davis would be a good choice if he still has the drive and hunger to really go after it. I think UF did it right hiring a young guy with a great record at a small school and a real burning desire to prove himself somewhere big.

What are your thoughts about the guy at Boise (name is escaping me right now)?

Peterson --- Not really aperterson guy.

Meyer was different becauase he ran a scheme offensively he created and was the only guy who could run it.

Peterson is a big risk becuase he has no ties to southern schools for recruiting purposes.

Remember, Myere took the UF job becuase its better than Notre Dame and recruits itself.

AU isn't in that place. Florida has its choice of players in Fla and beyond.

Wait - this just in. If you took CTT's winning percentage at Auburn and applied it to a season win/loss record, it would alternate between 7-5 and 8-4. Did you hear what I just said? That's the standard he has achieved in 10 years as the head. That is not good. I think just about any new coach could feasibly reach that goal. So then, tell me again why Tubs should get another year?

12:54 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

History will be kind to Tuberville. His time here was good. Few would have done better. Before us now I see a long dark and cold winter that we may not see the end of for several years. I am afraid that it will not be long in the future before we talk of the good times of the past 10 years and wish we could have them back. What we had taken from the Tide we have given back, and it will not be as easy to take it again. Saturday in Tuscaloosa was a picture of what is to come. Gray skies, cold winds, and fog. Take cover my friends, the storm is only just now approaching, and we will have much to weather before we see the sun again.

But see it we will. A day will come when the sky burns orange and blue. On that day the Tide will recede. The eagle will soar high in that clear blue sky. And on that day the Tigers will roam the plains and devour all that stand in their path. We will rise again my friends, we will rise again.

Phred, do that same trick with Butch Davis college stats (miami and UNC) and see what you get. Bet it is eerily similar.
