Spring winners
TUESDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,195
So that's another spring practice period in the books. All in all, it unfolded how I expected: Not much access, not much substance. That doesn't mean I'll keep my opinions to myself, of course, because a blog with no slog is a bore.
How do you feel about that?
I sometimes stroll down the avenue as people approach and ask: Mr. Tate, who surprised you this spring? My first instinct is to look for my dad, the real Mr. Tate, but he doesn't know anything about Auburn football. He's a Louisville graduate and a Tulsa fan.
You talkin' to me? Of course. Let me dish.

- Neil Caudle: Duh. Here's a kid whom many skeptics believed should be playing at Samford. Instead, he endured his season in exile and now appears to have become a serious contender for the starting job. It's important to note that the interceptions Tony Franklin hated so much really did occur. Still, the word I'm getting is that Caudle wasn't prone to interceptions this spring. He has a chance.
- Onterio McCalebb: He was supposed to be extremely quick and he is extremely quick. What I saw of him matched exactly what the scouting reports indicated. He looks like a future star to me. How far into the future? I think Auburn needs that home-run potential right now.
- Christian Thompson: I had a high opinion of him out of high school (he's a 2008 grad), but the safety driftd from my consciousness last year. That's what the scout team will do for you. I have heard surprisingly enthusiastic chatter about Thompson's refinement throughout the spring. I didn't get much of a chance to see him perform -- I spent most of my practice time watching offensive skill players -- but I expect Thompson to be a useful performer this fall.
- Clinton Durst: I'm not a football coach, but I know me and I know I'd have sent Durst packing this winter. He appeared to have left the team in January. He was upset that Auburn's new coaching staff hadn't yet offered him a scholarship. After the new coaching staff reaffirmed its position that Durst needed to prove himself in the spring, Durst lost his leverage. He came crawling back and did exactly what he said he wouldn't do: Competed for a spot without a scholarship in hand.
He had a good spring. He's a good punter. He'll likely earn that scholarship, but he should be grateful that Gene Chizik doesn't hold grudges.

Do I win?
Go Eddie, Go Eddie, it might be your birthday, Go Eddie
By the way, do we really need a coaches taste off in which the new football coaches cook ribs? I agree with doing something for charity, but I would like some seperation from the new coaches and BBQ.
is it august?
You win a talking to, Eddie. No substance.
Eddie, that's serious...a rib cook-off??
I wish August would get here.
I'm working on a high-school track story today.
The other guys were into sauces. Maybe these new coaches are dry-rub guys?
Peter- I never have substance this time of the year and if anybody does, it's all self manufactured :)!!!
huh, huh...you said dry rub.
nice shirt, Edward.
Yeah Seanzie. This Saturday at Beard Eaves Lawn.
Thanks Wes, I found it at the local Thrift Shop. They said it was an antique.
I heard that a HABOTN tee went for $140 on eBay recently.
I am a big fan of the BBQ tradition. TT's lasting legacy!
i should put a HABOTN tee on ebay and see what happens..........
If these guys are dry-rub guys, does that mean Tony Franklin would have fit in on this staff?
Franklin is more of a butt guy than rib guy.
#19, future starting QB Neil Caudle
I re-watched A-Day, and Neil made some ridiculous throws on the move. His pocket prescence is also much better than Kodi's.
No way these guys are all dry run guys.
I see Trooper as a sloppy sweet sauce guy.
Malzahn is definitely a vinegar.
Chizik kills and eats the meet raw and warm.
Ted Roof Rusted could go two ways. He might be a dry rub, but I peg him more as a mustard sauce.
Additions? Thoughts?
Kodi's 3 of 8 wasn't impressive at all since one of the completions, the one with the majority of his yards should have been picked off.
Peter,
You forgot Rocker, I believe he probably eats it dry then washes it down with hot sauce instead of sweet tea.

9:05 AM
should be the new quote Jay..fanfreakintastic!!
I'm glad some of you all see the humor in Ted Roof Rusted.
It's definitely a reference only some people would get, you know?
Seanzie, when you say ridiculous, you mean that in a good way, right? I too, was impressed with some of Caudle's throws. Kodi, not so much.
dnatl, a football season-only HOTTIE, made the first dry-rub reference back in September. It was a classic HABOTN moment for me.
Does anyone else think it takes Durst a long time to get the ball off?
Luv, yes that is what I mean. My generation has terrible inverted slang.
Jay G,
You mean not everyone remember the B-52's classic "Love Shack"?
Luv, rephrase your comment, that's begging for some kind of sick rebuttle.
I can't help it, I'm young and very immature.
(shaking head) Seanzie, Seanzie, Seanzie.
Does anyone else think that it takes Durst a long time to punt the ball?
How's that, Seanzie?
I kinda remember that comment..you perfected it for sure...
It's not as long as it took Duval to, as Tub said in Knoxville "throw the #@!# ball!"
All last year I thought for sure he was going to get a punt blocked.
who's the yellow shoes guy? he's a kicker right?
Saaay What?...
Yeah, Jay G, why didn't yellow shoes guy get a WIN from you for spring?
seriously tho...think this staff will do the cookout or was that a CTT thing?
wartiger. he's a placekicker
I think chizik had to let Durst back. We have no punter. shoemaker is awful
Dry rub and getting the ball off. They kinda go hand in hand don't they.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Yes they do Tommy, yes they do.
Harrison, Shoemaker wasn't awful his first season. Didn't he win some kind of award?
mytommy-nothing I love more than a dry rub and ball reference..lol..that's was funny dude...
just thought I'd push the immature envelope a little bit further.
He was pre-season 1st team sec punter going into last year, but got beat out by Durst. Next time he saw the field he averaged about 12 yards per punt in LSU game. (durst was hurt or sick)
durst was the guy that had never played football right..walked on..?
Good blog Jay. I think Caudle is the biggest surprise, but you make good points with the others. Durst really should get a scholarship.
I didn't remember that (actually, there's a lot about last season I'd like to forget). Thanks, Harrison.
Wartiger, that I do remember. Yes, he walked on.
Sounds like we are having fun here.
Unless the coaches can do something about it. Durst wil get a punt blocked early.
But he can sned the ole pigskin. That punt from the 10 yard line was a beauty. it went to the other side of the 50 to about the 42. and hang time was great the defenders were right there and ready.
I try to forget last year too. I just thought Durst was one of the few bright spots
I think it's dumb that Shoemaker is riding the pine and the one time he played, he was terrible AND has a scholarship.
he should have a scholarship..I remember Jays blog about him..I know he fell off but the kid definetly earned at least a full year deal..they can do that right..give partial scholarships?
Sorry,
But a bit of sad sports news, Doc Blanchard (Mr. inside of the great Army team) Died at age 84.
Shoe was an All-SEC Freshman once upon a time.
Jay, they actually wrote an article about my son for the state track meet last year so you have my back!!
When your team MVP is a walk-on punter, it might be a sign you won't make it to a bowl game.
good point Michael...sigh..good point..
I think the MVP should have been the long snapper. He was the only one who didn't screw up something all year long. Even Durst had bad punts time to time.
JG, what do you think about Fortner's 6-year extension? is she worth it?
The beach is truly natures masterpiece this morning my friends. I say we only have a bbq cookoff if we can import some elephant meat.
Can you take a pic and show us, BinOBA?
scottie, I know you didn't ask me, but I think Nell is totally worth it. Look what she's done with the Women's program in the short time she's been there.
How long has Lebo been around?
Sorry to hijack the thread ... but I feel the need to follow up with my position, with which none of you will agree.
I have absolutely no problem with not playing UCLA next year, and I believe it is a wise move to decline the game.
One of the AD's primary jobs is, as best he or she can, to put coaches in a position to succeed. I can't say that's happened at Auburn, but this decision at least reflects that line of thinking.
With a schedule of 8 SEC games, plus Clemson, that's a challenge. We shouldn't apologize to anyone for it.
It will be Year 2 of the Chiz regime. We could be playing with a first-year QB. Right now, we don't know if we've got a 4-8 team or an 8-4 team in 2009, so if we don't do well this year, you would be putting an incredible amount of pressure on your coach right out of the chute in year 2. That's not wise.
If you argue we need it for recruiting, this staff seems to be gaining the attention of recruits right now without it. The matchup gain much attention beyond having a game on television.
All the chest bumping aside, it shows some wisdom not to jump at the worm because there's a hook in there. It is better to set up a home and home with a reputable program in 2012 when Chiz has had a chance to right the ship.
It's way too easy to take the anti-Jacobs position. Sure, I wish we had a different AD, but it's not because of a faux controversy of a scheduling decision.
Lebo and Fortner were hired in 2004, I believe.
Jet, I completely agree with you. Scarbo can take his comments elsewhere, if you like at the Tide's schedule before the Clemson game and the Va Tech game, their OOC was rubbish. We've already been scheduling marquee games home and home style. The nay-sayers can talk down about it all they want, but I think it's smart.
Also, Re: Corso. I sometimes think he's full of it, but he's a fun guy and adds variety to the show. Herbie and Fowler are good enough to keep the serious tone there. Now if they could find a better guy to replace Corso, fine but to even think of putting King Saliva in the chair is a sin against the sport of college football. I'd rather watch Dirty Dancing or listen to chalk being scraped on a blackboard.
I actually disagree with you two here. I would have loved to see that game. We are not winning a MNC in 2010. Why not get as much exposure as you can. it's practically a home game
Harrison, don't get me wrong, I'd love to watch it, I think it would be great exposure, but I think it's smart to turn it down for 2010.
I say turning down the UCLA game is a bad move.
The game would be good for exposure to recruits.
It would be a nationally televised game in a season where we don't know just how many of those that we'd have.
It's never good PR to turn down a network looking to put you on their highlight game of a weekend. In the future they may be less likely to make that call.
It's essentially a home game for us anyway, UCLA has to travel across two time zones, and we just have to travel less than 2 hours.
Yes, it's not a guaranteed win that Arkansas State is, however it's UCLA, not USC. They are basically the Clemson of the Pac-10.
Plus Jacobs reasoning isn't accurate. We move schedules around all the time, but all of the sudden now we have decided not to do it?
This game shouldn't be about the money we will lose on dropping an 8th!!!! home game, it should be about the good will we can build up with recruits, networks and for the future.
Just my opinion, but I think it's a bad decision.
Brother Jet-good points but just not enough to justify the risk vs reward in my opinion...who cares who the coach is..you think CGC didn't wanna play UCLA next year? and while this staff seems to be doing a good job on the recuirting that game would have been huge..HUGE..for this staff..not to mention the game itself..I woulda love to see it and it always seems like I am reading about how we ducked out of this game or that..and then I read..AU schedules Western Kentucky..it's disgusting and it makes us look scared...Clemson is a ACC team..nuff said...we should have taken the game..bad business move in my opinion...
Harrison, I suspect the polls among Auburn folks are 95 percent in favor of playing UCLA and 5 percent defending the decision.
I've been in the 5 percent before. It's no biggie to me.
to Jet and RK, I say:
tl;dr
Agree to disagree then? When in Rome.
not to mention giving your fans something to be excited about RK..great post..
BTW, I must have missed it from an earlier thread. Why are you guys talking about the guys from college gameday?
yeah. I'm ok with disagreeing, seeing that I am obviously right. You guys are still cool.
Peter,
Basically...
Jet said "play UCLA bad"
I said "play UCLA good".
Short enough?
I'd take Corso over Holtz any day of the week..I absolutely can't stand sylvester...
Wartiger ...
HUGE for recruiting? I reject that notion. Otherwise, Lattimore, Seastrunk, etc., wouldn't be visiting us now.
Only people talking about this are Bammers and us. And they've moved on because 87,000 at spring practice has apparently guaranteed them their 750th national championship.
This is an ego thing.
If you don't coaches, including our own, don't have specific notions about who they want to play and when, it'll kill you to know that rasslin' is fake.
Corso is far far better than Holtz. ESPN just panders to Holtz because they have never had the level of access to the Notre Dame football program that they have had since they hired him.
Luv, Jhag mentioned it last thread.
here's a story I found about it. Says Corso and Fowler out. Holtz and Karl in. Tubs the daytime espn analyst.
Luv, i'm not saying she isn't worth the money. i'm just asking. there has been discussion here that she wasn't seen as the best X's & O's kind of coach. outside of Pat Summitt and Geno Auriemma (big money coaches) i'm not sure what the going rate is. $570,000 a year seems a bit high to me, though.
all that said, i think she did a fantastic job this year and i personally like her. i hope she keeps it up.
fantastic cliff's notes, RK.
You can tell a kid this year "the 1st game you will play will be in the Georgia Dome on National TV vs UCLA" or you can tell them that it'll be vs Arkansas State in front of 65,000 bored fans where the students will leave at halftime.
That will work big with some kids, crazy as it sounds.
jet is a fraidy cat
I'll move on.
If Holtz is the swap for Corso, I'm changing my mind. Keep Corso.
i do a mean Lou Holtz impression
Nope, Monica.
Jet is a wise owl.
by Jet's logic why are we playing WVU, Clemson and anyone other than the West Virginia Schools for the Blind?
Nope - illogical, fraidy cat
the finny thing about visits is that they are just that..visits..they come and they go to the next school..
The exposure is what woulda helped with recruiting...as far as knowing what the coaches are thinking you are right..I don't know if CGC wanted to play UCLA..now...rasslin' ain't real!! say is ain't so...
Thanks, PF!
Monica misses point. Have a philosophy and stick with it. A BCS game every year, plus 8 league games.
Play WVU
Play Clemson
Play Clemson and UCLA in year 2, maybe with a redshirt freshman QB?
Makes for great ego, not for wise management.
Not really bright.
I think the 8 league plus 1 good OOC is a winning formula. Had UCLA wanted to do this in 2011, we would have been on it like ants at a picnic.
Agreed, Seanzie.
scottie, what does Lebo make?
Fire Lebo!
Seanzie - how do you know we would have accepted it for 2011?
luv-I think he makes 750000..not that you asked me..
Harrison, you just spit all over the place and say Norte Dame alot, right?
My Holtz impression is very similar to my Joe Kines impression. Sure, it's quieter and has more spittle, but you can't understand a word of either of them.
Monica doesn't miss point. Monica sees your defense of the decision as flawed and disagrees with you. If you have to call Monica "not bright" to maintain your position, that's okie dokie with Monica.
My nephew does a spot on Holtz -- the routine involves Notre Dame, Syvelle Newton, baking cookies, babbling incoherence.
Luv, too freakin' much! :)
March 18, 2005
Jeff Lebo
AUBURN -- Auburn head men’s basketball coach Jeff Lebo has signed a contract which will pay him $750,000 annually for the next seven seasons according to an announcement by Athletic Director Jay Jacobs.
Now that is ridiculous! After one season???
After what Nell has done for the program, I think she is well worth the money.
Wake me up in August...goodnight
If you are arguing why play WVU, then you have missed the point, which is what you stated at 10:30ish.
There's not many seasons it would be smart to play 2 BCS out of conference. Personally, I think it's dumb to play two in one regular season. And definitely not in the first few years of a new regime.
That's the point. I knew if I tried 3-4 times, I would make it where it would be understood -- if not agreed to.
mon..not bright..c'mon Jet I know you know better than that..
Deciding to play 2 BCS games in one season is not a bright management decision, in my estimation.
It's not a personal attack, all reactions aside.
I can definitely see both sides, but I'm in agreement with Jet.
Monica, the Jacobs formula for scheduling Auburn football opponents is as follows: Play your 8 league games and get a marquee opponent from OOC. In 2005 he scheduled WVA for a home and home and then last year got Clemson on board for a home and home. He will be on the lookout for another team to do the same after the series with Clemson is played out. I guess 2011 we're on the road to Clemson so it would have been 2012...my mistake.
Jet,
I have to disagree with your premise. That kind of mentality is one of the many reasons AU got no more consideration for the BCS CG in 2004. Today, it is about style points and making impressions nationally.
Sensi, recheck your point, in 2004 we had zero competition from OOC and had we had a WVA or a Clemson on there, we would have had more gripe but looking back, we still needed no. 1 and no. 2 to lose that year.
Auburn needs to expand it's horizons in the kind of teams on the schedule.
Look at Georgia. They have played teams outside of the southeast recently and it garnered the program (and their premier players - see the NFL draft this weekend) a lot of attention they would not have gained by playing UT-Chatt. and Arky States of the world.
Yeah, but people knocked Auburn for the schedule then too, Seanzie.
Not to mention we played Home and Home with USC just 1 year prior and had Ga Tech on the schedule in 2003 to go along with it. 2004 was an abberation in OOC scheduling and it happened at the worst time for us. So it goes.
Sensi,
It was playing two non-BCS and a I-AA that proved fatal on the strength of schedule. What would have one BCS team done to that strength of schedule?
I can't speak for Jet, but I don't think he's saying not to play those kind of opponenets at all. He's saying just not in the first year of a new coaching staff when they are already playing an OOC BCS opponent.
Luv,
Exactly.
Jet is right, this is an ego thing. Sensible, be sensible in this case. I just checked UGA's OOC the last 6 years. They've played sub-par BCS schools OOC and haven't played a marquee team in a long time. They only benefit they get is their annual game against Ga. Tech. Florida playes vapor OOC with exception of FSU which they benefit from an in-state rivaly. I don't think Auburn's scheduling is as bad as people want to make it out to be. Look at 2007, we played Kansas State and South Florida in the same year.
It would be their 2nd year and who cares. "anyone, anytime" like Troy does
Owls are not only wise. They are also vicious predators with sharp beaks and talons. If you disagree with one, it will kill you.
I'm in the 5%.
They also throw up the remains of their prey just to spite them.
Enrique Davis arrested and Jerrel Powe told the Oxford police officer he couldn't read when the officer told him to sign a citation
http://blog.olemisslife.com/2009/04/21/davis-arrested-sunday/
i have an owl in my living room. not kidding.
and you wanted to go to school there, please.
enough of all this..can't change it..I do have a better idea of why Jacobs did what he did regarding scheduling thanks to you Jet...but I just really disagree with it....
I'm getting off this laptop for a while Hotties..check ya'll later....
Don't we have a return game to U of South Florida for that 2012 slot?
Ladarius Owens the coveted Linebacker said he was "not comfortable" on his visit to Tuscaloosa...this is the kid whose uncle was the fist black to play for Auburn..everyone wants him...He was told he had to commit that day or Saban would find other LB's and he said no,.
Sensi, I love ya, but there is no way Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno are getting more attention for the NFL draft because UGA played at Arizona State.
wow. i hope he ends up at AU.
i've been reading Thom Gossom's book WALK-ON. it has been a good read. him being the 1st black walk-on to score a scholarship at AU. Gossom and James Owens were really tight.
No, not entirely, Peter. They are very good players at their positions as well. But that exposure helps.
PEEPS:
Due to unusual circumstances, I will be doing the WMSP 740 afternoon show (The MAX Roundtable) this afternoon.
I cannot make it at 12 because of a prior engagement, but I will get down there asap. I'd say 12:30 CDT or so.
Piece.
I mean there's only pro-days and the combine, not to mention private workouts and plenty of game tape avaialble on these kids. No you're right sensi, UGA playing Arizona State makes them better draft choices.
Owls are the bomb at answering some of life's questions.
See Here.
Otherwise, they disturb sleep.
See Here.
I disagree with Jet as well.
Again, just my opinion, but the UCLA game would mean far more to the program in future years than the money made off of an 8th home game.
Yes it's a new staff and possibly a freshman QB, but don't treat it like were a new program to 1-A and we need baby steps to get national recognition. We are Auburn, we're supposed to bounce back from bad seasons.
USC started a QB on the road vs us when we were expected to be a national power in 2003, and the first pass of his career was a TD and he went on to in a Heisman. I think we could start in Atlanta with one vs a UCLA level school and be fine with it.
Yeah getting Owens would be huge
Seanzie,
It's all of that stuff. NFL scouts look at everything when scouting a player. I'm not talking about Kiper and McShay (who do good jobs respectively), but the team scouts. Those guys chew through so much data.
Really? What could it have possibly helped? If they're in that position regardless, how does a mediocre road game help them.
I think that game hurt the team. It exposed weaknesses, was a tough trip on the players, and didn't allow them to give their depth chart playing time that an early season puff would have. Individually for the marque players, it was just another game.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Stafford is in the number 1 pick discussion with UT-Chattanooga in that spot. He's that good.
Sean,
I think Sensi is saying (and I could be wrong, and am not speaking for him) that those level of games make the program more attractive to the players you are currently recruiting. It makes the program more attractive on a national scale when you are playing on Saturday night on ABC because the set up a game for you that you might not normally get to play in.
If you turn down those games now, in 3 years if Chizik has the program built back up, ABC might not be as willing to take a second chance and set a game up.
Exactly, RK.
Thanks for the assist.
I think I just accidentally jumped off the "Auburn should've taken the UCLA game" bandwagon. Oops.
Those games don't help get players to the NFL, they help get recruits in your school.
Jay, In your limited view, what did you think of Eltoro Freeman? Future stud?
Peter,
Stafford is probably going to go #1 because the Lions have been pressured into that, but I don't think they are sold on him. You don't draft very good QBs at #1 and usually live to tell about it. You have to hit a grand slam with those guys or else you sink so much into them, the franchise suffers (see Alex Smith at SFran).
He's very good, yes, but he needed another year of work imho. Can't blame him for striking when the iron is hot though. (See Matt Leinart at USC who didn't do that.)
Playing that high level of competition will pay off for those guys versus playing some cupcake sisters of the poor and downtrodden. NFL scouts will tell you they consider the competition the players come from.
PF ...
Get your butt back on that wagon where you belong.
As to the other issue, I just don't believe there's a significant recruiting advantage to be gained. It's about relationships -- and in some cases with some programs, cash.
Very good doesn't always translate to the NFL.
Ok, Jet. Why doesn't Auburn play Troy? Don't give me the nothing to gain line either. That's as weak and tired and Mr. United's calls.
Troy plays (and usually hangs close with) the big boys around the nation. They put serious talent in the NFL. You know the stadium would be packed with AU fans and the Troy fans would totally be in for that.
So, why not Troy, if AU is going to play "lower tier" teams?
Sensi,
If you don't like the answer, I'm sorry. Dems da breaks.
Here's my position: It is not the responsibility of the Auburn University athletic program, and the football program in particular, to prop up, give aid, throw bones to, or assist in any way, any Division I program within our borders.
We can find three schools to play and one BCS each year, and that is a -- dare I say -- "sensible" course to take.
Larry knows this, and doesn't whine about it.
I agree with everything you said there, Sensi. Just not playing Arizona State had one iota to do with that situation...
Will an NFL scout tell me that 8 SEC games + bowl games are not enough to prove what kind of player someone is?
That's my only point. I apologize, though, for bringing up this discussion because of one out of context statement. You could have made that argument with anyone, but I didn't think it applied well with example you gave.
I also think Stafford is setting himself up to fail by going this year. Playing in detroit and starting as a rookie QB is liable to destroy his career
Anyway, everyone argue amongst yourselves, I'm heading to the dentist.
Man, two root canals in one day.
RK, you are a man.
Jet,
I'm not asking for a "prop up" from Auburn to Troy or anyone else. But why can't one of those non-BCS OOC games be Troy? Just wondering.
Be well, RK.
I'm off to an appointment as well. Catch you all later.
Sensi ...
The answer is the one you don't want.
Because.
I think we are not talking about the same thing, Jet. I will hit you up on fb to clarify.
Jay on the roundtable....the only reason to listen!!
Free Ice Cream
Is there the slightest chance that Rollison or Mosley won't red-shirt this year and get some PT?
I'm pretty excited to see Benton and Blake in action, but who is qualified to mentor them?
I think there is a chance that Rollison or Moseley won't redshirt, but only if we don't have three QBs. If Todd isn't going to be available, my bet is that one of the freshmen become the number 3 guy. Unless one of the top 2 get injured, I wouldn't expect the number 3 guy to actually play.
I disagree about playing 2 BCS teams in one season. I would like to see that become a reality for Auburn. I despise USC, but look at their OOC schedule. It's impresive. They will play anyone anywhere. I love that about them and wish we would adopt that mentality. The 8th BS home game is crap. It pisses me off to pay the ticket price to a game that I care absolutely nothing about.
Well if we put 2 Pac-10 teams like Wazzu and Washington, I'd be just fine with it.
Anyone up there round montgomery know where pike road is?? Found a vw engine i may drive up and buy. How far from montgomery is that exactly and how far outta the way (how far off the interstate) is it??
Jet, I understand what you're saying about Auburn and Troy, but don't you think that would be a good game for all the reasons that Sensi stated?
If Auburns OCC was Arizona St, Washington, Washington St, and Stanford every year, I'd be okay with dropping UT-nooga et. al.
Eddie,
I love your bravado, but their conference is decidedly weaker than ours.
Eddie, maybe that will become a reality in a few years...
Luv ...
It would be wonderful for Troy. All the tickets are sold, either way. The only question is whether backsides are in the seats.
We're on different tracks, and to let them onto ours exposes us to harm.
I am a huge fan of Larry Blakeney and what he's done. I hope he collects the heads of Ohio State, LSU, FSU and whoever they play.
But we don't need that ... and we don't need a story line, either, that says "The Keep It Down Home, Cuz, Reunion Bowl."
AND the Pac-10 winner, goes to the Rose Bowl as their next game, if we win the SEC W and finish number 1 we stil have to go play a neutral site game at the end of the season.
Jet- How about Georgia? They are in our same conference and they are now playing 2 BCS OOC games a year. I understand USC Conference concern's, but I believe the PAC is better than most people think. Sorry, but we are cowards to not play a better schedule. It's fine if we don't want to be talked about as a big program and be second tier forever. Then our schedule is fine. I'm sorry, but Auburn needs all the exposure it can get.
Bin ...
Pike Road begins where Montgomery ends ... primarily out east off I-85, or southeast of U.S. 231.
Come get it.
Bin..
Pike Rd is on the east side of Montgomery, right off the I-85 (depending on how far down Pike it is).
I agree with Jet about the Larry Blakeney storyline. But after Larry is gone, I would love to play Troy if we are still playing crap games.
bin,
like a suburb of the gump....easy to get to from the interstate
If you notice, they pick teams from the bottom half of those conferences they play outside of Tech. It just so happens our in-state rival is in conference, so it goes. Personally I think the likes of La Tech, West Virginia and Ball State are fine. All three played in bowl games last year.
Seanzie- The Sugar Bowl is as neautral as the Rose Bowl. I don't see that as a factor.
Eddie, I wasn't referring to the Sugar Bowl, I was talking about the SEC Championship game.
Jet said..We're on different tracks, and to let them onto ours exposes us to harm.Jet, how does playing Troy expose Auburn to harm?
Seanzie- Oklahoma State is close to a pre-season Top 10 team this year. Arizona State was supposed to be much better than what it was. Sorry, but UGA is scheduling better quality teams.
Here is the 2 big OOC games for Georgia comming up:
2010- Oklahoma State, GT
2011 & 2012- Louisville (Scheduled when Louisville was better), GT
2013 & 2014- Clemson, GT
2015 & 2016- Oregon, GT
Sorry, but proof is in the pudding. Georgia is getting it done in the scheduling department. I would love to have their AD, Damon Evans.
Seanzie- Misread that point, I can agree that the PAC 10, Big East and Big 10 need a playoff to make it fair for all.
Eddie:
Here's my response. They've done the past three years. In the week after playing the other BCS team besides they, they've lost twice. The other time they barely beat a bad Ole Miss team, then lost the week after that.
Their recruiting was good before this and good since. The gain from the extra BCS is good for the ego, but I can't see any other tangible benefit.
Luv,
A game where it is the most important thing to a not-quite-as-talented opponent when it's just another Saturday for you is a recipe for disaster.
Throw in the fact that it would be against a second-tier school 40 miles away, well, that's just not a position Auburn will ever put itself in. Nor should it. The same reason that UAT won't play UAB.
Please get rid of Mr U
I hate Jim Rome for creating callers with scripts.
That being said, one liners are sometimes funny.
I LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUV Mr. U!
Not really.
Eddie, I get what you're saying but UGA has an advantage to scheduling 2 major OOC opponents. I'm quite satisfied with our one marquee out of conference game a year and scheduling a decent couple of mid majors underneath that one. If they want to bring in 2 strong teams, fine but when we lose both then the fan base gets pissed and says why are we shceduling 2 strong teams on top of our potential 9 game conference schedule?
Thanks, Jet!
Either way, Jay Jacobs will look like an idiot, not that it can be helped. :)
Playing Troy would risk losing to them. Last year they would have likely spanked us. That would affect their ability to recruit top players in the state of Alabama, which would affect our recruiting.
As for our schedule, I like it. Ball State is no longer a nobody. West Virginia is a good matchup. Furman is a, uhh, wait, what is Furman?
Jet- So it is the fear of losing to why you believe we should not play the extra BCS OOC game?
I guess I personally would like to see Auburn get away from that thinking. Yes, if we schedule these games are going to win some and loose some, but the way the BCS is setup currently, there are no undefeated teams at the end hardly and becomes a popularity contest. Let's face it, Auburn is not going to win a popularity contest without an edge and the only edge we can gain that we control is scheduling. So I will respectifully disagree with the other philsophy of a week OOC schedule combined with 1 tough game.
I hate that UGA gets credit for playing Tech every year.
To say we didn't play UCLA because we are scared is kind of ridiculous. These are purely business decisions and the guys making the decisions aren't playing in the games.
RESPECT given, Eddie.
200.
