Spring winners

TUESDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,195

So that's another spring practice period in the books. All in all, it unfolded how I expected: Not much access, not much substance. That doesn't mean I'll keep my opinions to myself, of course, because a blog with no slog is a bore.

How do you feel about that?

I sometimes stroll down the avenue as people approach and ask: Mr. Tate, who surprised you this spring? My first instinct is to look for my dad, the real Mr. Tate, but he doesn't know anything about Auburn football. He's a Louisville graduate and a Tulsa fan.

You talkin' to me? Of course. Let me dish.
  • Neil Caudle: Duh. Here's a kid whom many skeptics believed should be playing at Samford. Instead, he endured his season in exile and now appears to have become a serious contender for the starting job. It's important to note that the interceptions Tony Franklin hated so much really did occur. Still, the word I'm getting is that Caudle wasn't prone to interceptions this spring. He has a chance.

  • Onterio McCalebb: He was supposed to be extremely quick and he is extremely quick. What I saw of him matched exactly what the scouting reports indicated. He looks like a future star to me. How far into the future? I think Auburn needs that home-run potential right now.

  • Christian Thompson: I had a high opinion of him out of high school (he's a 2008 grad), but the safety driftd from my consciousness last year. That's what the scout team will do for you. I have heard surprisingly enthusiastic chatter about Thompson's refinement throughout the spring. I didn't get much of a chance to see him perform -- I spent most of my practice time watching offensive skill players -- but I expect Thompson to be a useful performer this fall.

  • Clinton Durst: I'm not a football coach, but I know me and I know I'd have sent Durst packing this winter. He appeared to have left the team in January. He was upset that Auburn's new coaching staff hadn't yet offered him a scholarship. After the new coaching staff reaffirmed its position that Durst needed to prove himself in the spring, Durst lost his leverage. He came crawling back and did exactly what he said he wouldn't do: Competed for a spot without a scholarship in hand.

He had a good spring. He's a good punter. He'll likely earn that scholarship, but he should be grateful that Gene Chizik doesn't hold grudges.

I wish we still played GT every year. Our rivalry with them was one of the oldest in the south.

It is hard to believe we use to play Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia Tech every year.

Auburn is in a tough spot because we don't just have another close geographical team we can play every year in a BCS conference because all the good candidates around are already locked up.

Playing Troy wouldn't do us any favors with the OOC either.

Everyone that thinks Ball State is good needs to reaccess them. Ball State is not good and with the loss of 2/3rd's of their starters and a new coach it's going to be a long season this year for them. They are not a bowl team this season.

12:59 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Eddie, find us a team we could play every year that would be the equivalent of a UGA-GT, FSU-UF, Clemson-USC, heck Ole Miss-Memphis.

Blogger Jet said...

We all want the same thing ... a national championship.

It will occur when two things happen -- we win the SEC and all the chips fall the right way.

To play two of these games every year requires one of them to be away from home -- finances aside, that would mean there would be five difficult games (ain't no gimmes in the SEC right now) to play away from your home every year.

That makes the path treacherous.

1:02 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I don't agree with locking up with 1 team for a long series unless it was GT or FSU, which it won't happen. I would like to see (2) home and away series that offset each other, one being home and one being away. If you want to go find a team to lock up a long series with, I would love it to be Texas.

Latest conspiracy theory, we won't name Neil the starter because, in theory, Kodi could transfer, RS, and then have 2 years to play elsewhere.

Most likely at Boston College.

Blogger Seanzie said...

I don't buy it, we could grant him release if he doesn't go to X,Y,Z school, and if he wants to leave because he's not the starter, fine but make sure the door doesn't hit ya on the way out.

I want Kodi Burns to live up to the hype so bad, but I just don't see it. I don't ever see him being a productive QB. I hope I am wrong, but I don't see the light.

just to throw my opinion into the ring, i would like to see AU play some ACC teams in our traditional recruiting areas. GT, FSU, Clemson (check), Miami, UNC, NCST & Wake would be perfect. Heck, even throw Duke in there now that cutcliffe is there. the virginia schools and BC are too far away for fans to travel to easily. i know miami is a haul but it's miami and we recruit there more than the northeast. if AU is where it needs to be in 3-5 years, most of those should be very very winnable and provide excellent exposure in our recruiting geography.

i have been a big proponent of playing AT Hawaii every 5 years. they are obviously not opposed to a trip around the world as they played at UF and UAT recently. i think it would be great to have a rotating home and home with them. AU fans could plan a vacation to Hawaii and it would be a blast to invade the islands with orange and blue. that would also be a recruiting bonus with guys knowing they will get to go to Hawaii once in their college career.
it would be an awesome season opener. call me crazy but i would try to go. it just has to give fans a chance to plan and budget for the travel years in advance.

example:

at hawaii 2015
hawaii at AU sometime 2016-2019
at hawaii 2020

Michael - The company that owns JGT's paper is Gannett which is outside of DC. Gannett, owns TV stations as well as other papers nationally. They also own USA Today.

2:48 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

When the local paper is a branch of the company that owns USA Today, and USA Today is losing money, yes, Michael.

Suppose company X makes widgets. Widget A,B,C, and D are profitable, but are sold at a low volume. Widget Z is widely distributed and takes in a huge amount or revenue, but is very costly. Essentially, the profits that A,B,C, and D make keep the company afloat so that don't go out of business due to the costs from Z. It would be smart for Company X to get rid of the Widget Z division, but since it is their flagship, and they have been operating this way for years and years, they refuse to do so.

2:49 PM

Fortune 500 rank: 371
Loss: $6.6 billion

Read all about it: Newspapers around the world had a rough year. Circulation of USA Today, the largest of Gannett's 102 daily papers, slipped 2%, and the company's newspaper group overall saw a 13% decline in revenue, thanks to shrinking circulation and advertising revenue. Gannett wrote down the value of its U.K. newspapers by $2.1 billion and its U.S. newspapers by $4.4 billion.

Even operating income in its digital group, which includes ShopLocal.com and CareerBuilder.com, dropped 18% last year. The good news, such as it is, is that revenue in the broadcast group, which owns 23 TV stations, was steady, despite drop-offs in auto and retail ads. The bad news is that there are no Olympics or presidential elections in the offing to give this year's numbers a similar boost.

Think's the ball is rolling in Alabama but they still need upgrades at certain positions to contend.

My input on the schedule: just does not matter that much. I seriously doubt any recruit would be swayed by a win or loss in an extra good game. It would give us something to thump our chests about if we won, but come 2010, I am guessing commentators will be patting us on the back for playing Clemson, and no one is going to really give a crap that we didn't schedule UCLA.

I wish we would have scheduled them, but come on, enough of this "It's the end of the world and this proves that Jay Jacobs is an idiot and also proves the athletic department is not committed to making us a national power and now our kids won't go as high in the draft blah blah blah".

If we aren't playing games because we're afraid we'll lose them then this program is down much much more than I ever imagined.

4:16 PM

Auburn has a long storied history of shoot the crap out of a potential great season by playing a very good team in the first game. Miami is an example. Texas was another example. We don't even want to get into USC or GT. I am not sure why people would think that not getting the crap kicked out of us in the first game would spoil our reputation. Guess what folks. We are in rebuilding mode.

4:16 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The Miami game in 84 is much like the GT game in 05...we come off of a monster year expecting great things the next year and fall flat on our face.

4:17 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

So Auburn losing against decent teams in openers is like the sun rising, we just have to accept that it's going to happen if we schedule them?

4:18 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

WarEagleRK, this program is down much more than I ever guessed it would be. The number or recruits we lost, the players we lost, and losing the entire coaching staff will have an effect. I think Chizik has done well under the circumstances, but the people that thought the 11-2 season was crappy a couple of years ago are going to be dreaming of the days we could win 9 games for a bit.

4:18 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

history doesn't lie. we stink in opening/very early "blockbuster" non-conference games. For that reason, I'm against them. Being 2-0 is better than 1-1 or 0-2 no matter who you played. Stick a top 10 Nonconf team in the middle of the SEC grind like we did in 83 and we'll be ok.

4:20 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Is is rebuilding the reason we turned them down?

I've heard we schedule one BCS opponent a year non conference.

I've heard we can't lose that precious 8th home game.

I've heard we already have our schedule made for 2010.

It seems to change every time someone different justifies it.

4:20 PM
Blogger michael said...

But do you think it was fair that the BC coach was fired for looking elsewhere? Isn't this America?

4:21 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Believe it or not, there can be numerous reasons something doesn't or shouldn't happen.

4:21 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Michael, from what I understand BC has a new policy that any coach that interviews for a coaching position must be fired, so basically any coach the interview and hire must go.

4:22 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

People complained before last year that we had West Virginia in the middle of the SEC schedule...that it wasn't fair to travel to WVU after we started the SEC.

If the stigma of the program is we can't win non-conference games early and that's how it is always going to be, then we really need to reevaluate our programs overall standing or do something to remove that stigma other than scheduling UTC and Arkansas State.

4:23 PM
Blogger michael said...

rk, I think the real reason is money, but it makes people happy/unhappy for various other reasons. Truth is, no one knows why we turned it because we are not Jay Jacobs.

4:23 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

RK, the program IS down.

Seanzie, just because they play every year doesn't make it relevant game. The rest of those games listed are usually relevant. I'm not sure that one ever has been.

UTC and Arkansas State are fine. I expect a couple of games like that. I am happy to see West Virginia on the schedule and Clemson too.

4:24 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Southern Cal stunk for a decade, I guess Pete Carroll should have came in and expected to be .500 and definately shouldn't have kicked off his 2nd and 3rd seasons playing Auburn.

4:25 PM
Blogger michael said...

That game means a lot in Memphis, PF. Elsewhere...including Oxford... not so much.

4:25 PM
Blogger michael said...

I think we can all agree that USC is where they are today because they scheduled Auburn those two years. You're welcome, Pete.

4:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I suspect money has a lot to do with it. People that whine about opponents or the size of our stadium should step up and get to games. If you sell out the stadium regularly, the games will come.

4:26 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

It didn't hurt. He got two prime time national TV games against a team people have heard about ...won both games and started his seasons off on a roll.

4:27 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Guess what game during the 2003 season ruined that season and likely cost us a shot at the NC in 2004?

4:27 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

Maybe that's what Neuheisel was thinking.
step 1:schedule auburn
step 2: win??
step 3: greatest team ever

4:27 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Like I said before. It's just short sighted. Yes there is more money right away in playing Arkansas State at home rather than UCLA on the road. However in the big picture the UCLA game could potentially do far more for the program in the long run.

4:28 PM
Blogger michael said...

I am sick of California using us as a stepping stool. Take your hippies and sissy football teams and jump in the pacific!

4:29 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

SteveFC,

The answer to that question was Georgia Tech. If we bounced back at a below average Tech team in 03 then the USC game wouldn't have ruined anything.

If we went 11-1 just losing to a USC team that turned out to be great, we would have had a great season.

4:29 PM
Blogger michael said...

That would also mean we beat LSU and gotten to the BCS championship game. That would be a good season.

4:30 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The thing is, UCLA didn't come to us, it was the network that came to the SEC and the SEC suggested that Auburn play in that game.

If the opportunity comes up again, ABC or the SEC might not be so happy to make that call to us again.

4:31 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

yeah but we bounced back at Vandy bigtime!!

4:31 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Hey Pete, I was just throwing that out there to make a point, as in it's a regionally based annual matchup. I never said it was relevant.

4:32 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

i dont think we would have beaten LSU and UGA, since we got beat by a combined total of like 87-12.

I went to both of those games, by the way. Not Fun

4:32 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The bad thing about the Vandy game in 03, I was scared when it as 0-0 at the end of the 1st quarter and we hadn't scored a TD in 9 quarters.

4:32 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

So are some people saying we shouldn't play UCLA because we might lose?

4:33 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I don't think we beat those teams either in 03. The USC game didn't ruin anything that year, Bobby Petrino leaving for Louisville and us replacing him with Nallsminger ruined 03 long before the opening kickoff vs USC.

4:33 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

I also went to that vandy game. But for nightlife afterwards really

4:33 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Well, if Auburn beats UCLA on the way to an undefeated season, then the BCS Championship Game payout will make up for the small Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic payout.

4:34 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Barkley, we're rebuilding. Obviously we shouldn't play a mid level Pac 10 team in our own back yard right now.

Blogger Seanzie said...

4:36 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

What else is there to talk about?

4:37 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

The only reason we're still talking about it because some people are taking it as a shot to their ego, which is dumb. That's what Bammer does. Auburn isn't scared and doesn't have to play UCLA. We get on National TV enough, people know about the Auburn program, we've earned the right not have to go play anyone, anytime.

4:37 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

Maybe it is a little bit selfish of me, but I would just get more entertainment out of a UCLA game than an Arkansas St. game. I think as a fan, it's that simple. You want to watch your teams play in the more entertaining games. I would rather see us lose to UCLA in a good game than beat Arkansas St. 34-0.

There's obviously a lot that goes into the decision as an athletic director, but I really don't want to hear it was because of financial reasons. That just sounds bad. We just paid a coach millions of dollars to go home, and have some of the highest paid assistants in the country.

4:39 PM
Blogger michael said...

I don't think it's crazy to avoid playing two quality nonSEC programs a year. One is fine with me.

Like I said earlier, I wish we had scheduled UCLA, but who cares? I like a good game, but the truth is the risk outweighs the reward. On one end of the spectrum, we could win, supposedly suddenly we get national respect for beating a rebuilding PAC 10 team that we might not get beating SEC teams, and when the end of the year comes, if it just happens we are on the edge of making the National Title game or being the last BCS at large berth, playing a nonconference BCS program will come in handy.

Now the downside: suppose we lose, and that one game keeps us out of the BCS or out of the SEC championship game (in the case of a three way tie in our division) or keeping us out of a bowl by giving us a losing record.

Neither of these scenarios are all that likely; most likely what will happen is people will forget about the game by the end of the season.

Not a shot to my ego, nor am I dumb nor am I a Bammer.

It does add value to a season ticket package. So maybe a shot to my wallet. I'd rather see us excited to play in the Ga Dome vs a name school with 72,000 people on their feet rather than play Arkansas State at Jordan Hare with 20,000 empty seats and almost the entire student section gone by halftime. Maybe I'm weird like that.

Again, I ask, why would we not want to play UCLA?

4:42 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

RK to clarify, I didn't call you a Bammer or dumb. Just sayin'.

4:44 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

There is no logical answer to that, RK.

We will just have to take the media shots now. I think I heard Luginbill say something about it today on Finebaum....

4:45 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Oh I know, but you did classify everyone who would want to see the UCLA game as taking it as a shot to their ego. Which it's not. There are a lot of fans who see the benefit of playing that game, win or lose, over playing Ark State.

4:45 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

maybe Arkansas St. will have a big year this year. That'll show everybody

4:45 PM
Blogger michael said...

barkley - Jacobs didn't say it was for financial reasons, that is just fans reading in between the lines. He said something about how we already have a full schedule and we would love to play them in 2012 or something like that. The masses believe that might be a bit of baloney.

4:46 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

By the way UCLA was 4-8 last year...worse than us. Right now they are a threat in name alone.

4:46 PM

That guy on the radio called us all paranoid Monk-type crazy fans. I'd say he was right on. It was certainly favorable to his description of Bammers.

4:47 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Ehhh...It's something to talk about to pass the time until there is actually something to talk about.

4:48 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Why does everyone bring up poor Arkansas State, what about the other vapor we play that year, Chattanooga and LaMo?

4:49 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

From a fan's perspective, the UCLA game has greater value, there's no argument there.

4:49 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

400.

4:49 PM
Blogger michael said...

Just wondering.. how many recruits listen to Luginbill or Finebaum? How many actually let them influence where they go to school? How likely is it that mainstream media actually picks up on this non-story? Does anyone other than Auburn fans know that Bowling Green backed out of a game with us in 2004?

I stand by my stance that this decision will have zero effect on the state of our program.

Puppets.
