Spring winners
TUESDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,195
So that's another spring practice period in the books. All in all, it unfolded how I expected: Not much access, not much substance. That doesn't mean I'll keep my opinions to myself, of course, because a blog with no slog is a bore.
How do you feel about that?
I sometimes stroll down the avenue as people approach and ask: Mr. Tate, who surprised you this spring? My first instinct is to look for my dad, the real Mr. Tate, but he doesn't know anything about Auburn football. He's a Louisville graduate and a Tulsa fan.
You talkin' to me? Of course. Let me dish.

- Neil Caudle: Duh. Here's a kid whom many skeptics believed should be playing at Samford. Instead, he endured his season in exile and now appears to have become a serious contender for the starting job. It's important to note that the interceptions Tony Franklin hated so much really did occur. Still, the word I'm getting is that Caudle wasn't prone to interceptions this spring. He has a chance.
- Onterio McCalebb: He was supposed to be extremely quick and he is extremely quick. What I saw of him matched exactly what the scouting reports indicated. He looks like a future star to me. How far into the future? I think Auburn needs that home-run potential right now.
- Christian Thompson: I had a high opinion of him out of high school (he's a 2008 grad), but the safety driftd from my consciousness last year. That's what the scout team will do for you. I have heard surprisingly enthusiastic chatter about Thompson's refinement throughout the spring. I didn't get much of a chance to see him perform -- I spent most of my practice time watching offensive skill players -- but I expect Thompson to be a useful performer this fall.
- Clinton Durst: I'm not a football coach, but I know me and I know I'd have sent Durst packing this winter. He appeared to have left the team in January. He was upset that Auburn's new coaching staff hadn't yet offered him a scholarship. After the new coaching staff reaffirmed its position that Durst needed to prove himself in the spring, Durst lost his leverage. He came crawling back and did exactly what he said he wouldn't do: Competed for a spot without a scholarship in hand.
He had a good spring. He's a good punter. He'll likely earn that scholarship, but he should be grateful that Gene Chizik doesn't hold grudges.

Yeah, Arkansas State goes undefeated, beating Iowa, Louisville, and Nebraska along the way, then an SEC team in the Sugar Bowl, and the 2010 home opener suddenly turns into a nationally televised game.
I'm certainly not advocating the position that a game with Arkansas State is more "attractive" than a game with UCLA.
I'm to blame for this getting started back up, as it had died in the previous thread.
So you can send your hate email to blamejet@jetisreallyjayjacobs.com.
Thank you.
Go Puppets Go!
Wait a minute, didn't Arkansas State change its name from the Indians to the Puppets to satisfy the NCAA Thought Police?
Michael, I wasn't saying that it would effect recruiting. I was just saying that we will take a media hit for it.
If we were in the hunt for the national title in 2010, and there were two other teams also in the discussion, you can bet the UCLA opportunity will be thrown in our face.
Arkansas St is a bunch of perverts.
Michael said stool. hee hee
You kids have fun ... heading to ElTurbo's final game as a high school soccer player.
Arky State gets brought up because it's the game that would have to be moved/cancelled for the UCLA game.
Barkley, can you increase the font size on that first "If" to about 800 point, cause that's a pretty darn big if.
Jet Jacobs...I can see it.
Monica, you are so immature.
neener neener
Now if we scheduled the Central Arkansas Mule Riders (Tub's alma mater) then I don't think there would be any complaints.
Sorry, Southern Arkansas, not Central Arkansas...I must have been thinking of Scottie Pippen.
RK- do you usually think of Scottie Pippen.
I had a hooters waitress once that looked like Scottie Pippen.
Didn't we have to PAY Ark State a mil to get them to come and lose?
seanzie- we and all other big schools pay those kinds of schools too come play us. It's how they fund a lot of their athletic budget.
Yep.
That is a big if Peter, but it doesn't take away from the point.
you had her?
That's how Troy funds its athletic department ... $750,000 beatdowns at Nebraska, Missouri, etc.
Naw I get that, I just didn't realize it was 7 figure numbers to do so.
she was our waitress
we were pretty young maybe 15 years old. The lady looks like Scottie Pippen. We were terrified
Scottie Pippen-esq Hooters waitress, that will be a new scary dream for this guy.
Jay, for tomorrow, can we get a list of spring losers? or non-winners?
just got home from work. let's discuss the pros/cons of not playing UCLA.
Well, it appears that the dead horse has been beaten and re-beaten. We will NOT play UCLA. Now, on to the BC coaching situation.
T minus 33 minutes... GO PENS!!!
i think we should discuss it until it turns to glue... or dog food.
Never really think of Scottie Pippen, but when I typed Central Arkansas all I could think of was the Bulls announcer saying "...and from Central Arkansas # 33 Scottie Pippen".
However a waitress that looked like Scottie Pippen is scary...but at least she didn't look like Willie McGee.
Bark, I think it does take away from the point. You're trying to support the pro-UCLA stance by saying it would help if Auburn was in a 3 way national title conversation. The fact is, barring a mircle, the program won't be anywhere near there. Auburn goes 2-10 and the problem you bring up will be averted and Arkansas State was a good team to schedule as they account for 50%.of
the wins.
Miss THT fixed THE BEST country style steak and mashed tater with gravy I have ever had in my whole life. The CSS was so tender I had to use a spoon. YUM!!!!
Ummm...food.
Peter- Was Alabama going to be in the National Championship picture last year? I know nobody thought that they would, but they were up till the SEC Championship game. The Clemson game gave Alabama confidence and they used that to jump start their season and make a run at the Championship. If we go 2-10, does it really matter that we could have been 3-7? Early games give you confidence and momentum if you win them and if you don't, then the character of the team will stand out. Unfortunately we have been on the bad side of those season's win loosing to a marque game to open the season.
Ok Peter, you win. Let's just assume we're not capable of contending for a national title, schedule some cupcakes, head to Shreveport.
I say we play Hoover in the opening game and run up around 100 points on them. We should get plenty of national exposure.
barkley, I am already looking to borrow some "Shreveport or Bust!!!" signs from Bama fans.
Woohoo.I win..
Actually, Eddie got me to almost compliment Saban, I concede all of my points. You win, Bark.
You almost complimented Saban?
That would call for the banhammer.
I just got to the game, but I have my Blackberry. Did I miss anything? What should be our scheduling philosophy?
Stay focused on the game Jet.
Saban will tell you that the fans have to be enthusiastic in order to pull out the W.
Bark, I picked up on that earlier. When did he say all of that? I'd like to read/hear it. Sounds very bizarre.
Bark ...
Just the girls game ... ElTurbo game afterward.
Got time to debate scheduling, Chris Todd, BC, puppets ... Whatever.
I think he said it a few days ago. He said that the Alabama fans weren't as excited and enthusiastic as they should have been for the Utah game last year. I think he also talked about expectations again, but I just caught the tail end of that.
Watching this E60 report on Michael Vick's pitbulls...
What a scumbag
Jet,
Chris Todd is going to be the number one draft pick in the 2010 NFL draft after coming back from noodle arm syndrome and leading Auburn to a perfect record in 2009.
What do you think about that?
So the whole thing about the staff changes on College Gameday was a big rumor??
Link up your story, Luv.
Well, I clicked on the link that PF gave me this morning and now it says that it was all a rumor.
That's good, Dr. Lou every saturday telling me who's going to win and I might just quit CFB.
PF's link from this morning
Well, I wouldn't have quit college football, just Gameday.
PF...
I am good with it unless we play UCLA. They are the Bruins, which are bears. And that's just scary.
i forgot about UCLA being bears. Maybe Jay Jacobs ain't so dumb after all.
I agree with Michael that not playing UCLA will have no recruiting impact on us...that being said..it woulda definintely made a recruiting impact if we had of played them
I am flying solo tonight (I think) on The Gridiron Breakdown.
I want you to join me with your thoughts, impressions, concerns after the spring drills.
347-826-9452
I am on from 7 pm to 8 pm CDT.
it's quiet in here. Everyone must be watching hockey like I am. GO PENS!!!
Doc/THT/Puck/... - I for one have the house to myself for the week, I'm watching some baseball, having a frosty beverage & in somewhat of an homage to you, when beverage is empty I'll have some Blue Bell which has made a very rare appearance in my house.
ahhhh Blue Bell, the ultimate YUM!!! Savor it for me :-)
Hey sensible, is that it for tonight?
Indeed I will as once this pint is gone it will be quite some time before it makes it back into the house again. I used to have a problem. I was addicted to Blue Bell. It doesn't get any better than that.
well, it won't be Blue Bell, but gatiger, you've talked me into a bowl of ice cream with choc. syrup at 2nd intermission.
Harrison's peeps
Linky no worky.
i cannot believe I read all these posts. I need to stop working in order to keep up.
It was a mistake to not scheule UCLA. Win or lose take the game. if you don't want to play them because you may lose, then get out of the SEC and join Conference USA or the Sunbelt. For most football fans, we are a regiona; team. They have heard of us but, know us a s a regional team. If you want your name mentioned with the high profile teams, you better schedule high profile teams to establish yourself.
FSU and Miami were door mats for a long time. They started scheduling big name teams and finally go their prgram to the top. Why just be on the fringe of big time college programs. Mna up and go play the big teams. I do not care if we have a RS freshman QB. It was only one game. Play it and move on.
oh, well I suck at links tonight, I guess....I'm posting from my phone, so I have no idea what I did wrong. It was a story about Slovenia being on lockdown because the first bear was spotted in a decade.
If someone is concerned that AU has a history of losing season opener big time games, playing Ark St, UTD, or Citabel is not going to change that history. The only way to change it is to play a big time game and win it.
Jet I understand your point. I just feel the game was offered at the right time and would help AU propel itself into a national spotlight that it has to work extra hard to get anyway.
Please, for the love of all that is good, no more UCLA talk.
I'm just getting started. Where are you guys? I calling you out. Let's discuss.
Why are we not playing UCLA?
It's more humiliating not to play it than to play it and lose. But, that's just my opinion. Clearly, I'm not a Mensa member like Jay Jacobs.
Doc - mission accomplished. That pesky pint will taunt me no more.
I give in. We should have played UCLA...are we good?
The Braves are on...decent play, they could use a few more runs.
I agree that the UCLA horse is sufficiently dead..but it is a crime..really is
UCLA scheduling
I've been surfing the UCLA forums. If it makes any of you feel any better, they're beating the horse too.
Well if they wanted it so bad, why not accept the Ga Tech offer? Or even the home and home?
don't hire Turner Gill..OMG AU is racist..hire Gene Chizick..WTF....pass up UCLA for a home game with some nobody...sigh..I do love me some Aubie tho...sheesh...
new thread?
nope not that I saw..hmmm..
I'm just glad I've gotten support on my side that we should play UCLA...earlier in the day I felt like it was me against the world.
The world = Jet SteveFC and Seanzie.
Haha RK, in reality we're the 5%.
I think you in the majority now tho aren't we RK?..
I'm not a lemming. Jacobs made the right call.
I'm not Tom Lemming either.
On what grounds did he make the right call?
Why wouldn't we want to play UCLA?
The Braves find new ways to lose, it's very creative.
Have we not all made our points? Good grief.
g'night hotties. fight the power. or something...
don't want whiz on the parade, but here is a fact.
right or wrong, smart or stupid, AU is not playing UCLA.
i now officially don't care why it didn't happen and what the hypothetical ramifications are.
it didn't and ain't gonna happen, so bring on the moccasins in 2010 and let's give 'em a six-figure whoopin' they can be proud of and watch the walk-ons play.
Chip, I hate your avatar, but thank you for your input.
I am a proud member of the 5 percent. No play UCLA
The schedule was set for 2010. When's the next opening? We can talk about that.
I know we've got Clemson in 10 and 11. And then Ga Tech a few years after that.
I hate chips avatar too but he is dead on..Gene Chizick is our coach and we ain't playing UCLA..that's enough for me..so what was yellow shoes name? the place kicker?
I'd like to see Auburn play a Big 12 team...
We've manipulated a schedule before, in fact several times in recent years but now all of the sudden in 2010 it's suddenly taboo to move games.
How awesome would a stint with OK State be?
gatiger - Great work! I also put a dent in a new carton of chocolate ice cream (the vanilla was in basement and I didn't want to miss any hockey).
PENS WIN PENS WIN PENS WIN!!!!
Canes beat NJ on a buzzer beater. Puck crossed goal line with 0.2 sec on clock.
RK..
I love you man. We've been talking about this since 8 this morning. I don't think a single mind has been changed.
OK State would be nice...Texas, Oklahoma, any of the big boys would be a nice home and home.
Bring on Texas Tech too, crazy Mike Leach can get his trip inside Jordan Hare that he wanted last year when the coaching job was open.
i figure if people will respond to anything i have to say with this avatar, i must have something slightly relevant to say from time to time.
My goal isn't to change anyones mind...I assume most people here are strong willed and strong minded enough to stand by their decisions.
Should BC hire Rick Neuheisel? Y'all have been beating a dead horse, but has anyone considered the ramifications on the BC coaching situation if AU played UCLA?
Maybe BC should go after Tommy Tuberville, then it would get crazy in here.
your support and disgust are appreciated.
I love chip chip avatar. It's weird.
Jet, how did the soccer game go?
I think sidearm middle relievers are the devil.
Did the Braves lose to the Nats??
They're working on it. Down 1 in the 7th.
your relevance isn't based on your avatar chip..it's based on your contribution to the argument..discussion..bama hatin (I HATE BAT BTW)..ect..that avatar just reminds me of a large headed pedophile...that's all...good day now..I said good day...
I meant BAMA of course...
Round the bowl, down the hole, RTR.
ducks and sharks on versus. This would be a good time to live in CST zone. The quest for Lord Stanley's Cup is absolutely one of the greatest sporting events.
I love hockey ALMOST as much as I hate bama. That's how much I love hockey.
Puckfanatic looks like a dirty word to me.
Suggesting Fudpucker's got me in trouble once...
Is there ever an hour where one of the blue collar comedy guys aren't on Comedy Central?
I thought it was better than this
PhPhred-
is this better?
there isn't anything on tv tonight..I went with an ole classis..Shawshank Redemption..this is my favorite movie of all time..can't get enough...
so quick vote..Nascar or Hockey..
I go Nascar..
How much of an idiot does Mitch Mustain feel like right now? He's 3rd on the depth chart at USC...i know a school that could use him and the offensive cordinator is from Arkansas and used to coach him...
No doubter..
Nascar
I love it
HockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockeyHockey
Hockey, fo serious.
Hockey? NASCAR? Hmmmm, I vote for watching my hummingbirds at the feeder :)
Cause the Braves are going to kill me for sure!
Braves have given me reflux.
I must admit that some of my NASCAR ardor has abated since the retirement of Jimmy Spencer. He was my favorite.
Fistful of Dollars, the original spaghetti western, on AMC. That Clint is one baaad dude. Channel surfing during hockey commercials. Clint Eastwood for President!!!
Mitch Mustain should transfer to Auburn and play for Gus, his old high school coach
we got 2 nascars..2 hockeys..and one watching of a feeder..anybody gonna break the tie...
THT..
It is a staple on my DVR that I can always turn to.
Bark ...
We lost 3-0. Goalie slipped on the first one, penalty kick (dubious call) and a breakaway (great move by the kid who scored). ElTurbo played ok in his final high school game.
yeah, mustain ended up looking like a total schmuck.
that happens when you go to a team that signs two or three 5-star QBs every year.
that said, he is a USC QB and will be drafted somewhere in the 3rd to 5th round even if he never plays a meaningful down.
I know if I watched either hockey or nascar I would probably understand it and get into it. But, from my very limited knowledge, it appears you watch hockey to see fights and nascar to see wrecks.
Cincy, think the Braves can get 1 in the 9th?
false for the former, true for the latter, cincy.
Hockey is the most skillful sport I've ever watched. Plus it's FAST!
"It's time to go get 'em Braves"
Milo Hamilton
well that response doesn't break the tie there cincy..got a pick?
Wartiger ...
Hope is good thing.
Between NASCAR and hockey, I any sport where you can check guys into the boards is cool by me. Hockey!
Nope, no tie breaker here. And Seanzie, I've seen the Braves score something crazy like 13 in the bottom of the ninth, so I never give up! Tying run is on base.
sorry jet but I'm confused..Hope is good thing? thanks for breaking the tie tho..
Braves on 2nd & 3rd with no outs
deep fly gets 1.
Go Braves...
And take the Falcons, Hawks, & Thrashers with you.
Just kidding.
Nats catcher just racked himself.
Sharks lead 1-9
Cincy- Braves scoring 13 in bottom of 9th only means they were at least 13 runs down. Not good.
bust out the suicide squeeze bobby!
Jet, that's a bummer.. I lost in the state championship in my last HS basketball game, it sucks going out with a loss.
FSJ, I haven't gotten your opinion on Saban calling out all of your fans. Were you guys the reason for the Utah loss?
Dang! One out, no advance
oops, 1-0
FSJ- I agree
short fly ball...2 outs.
craptacular.
Why can't the Braves advance runners?!
Ball game?
let Felipe Alou pinch hit, or the Beeg Boy, Rico Carty
i think andre smith's former agent was mostly to blame.
That's it.
pinch run Ralph Garr and the runner will advance regardless of what the batter does
Well, THT, hope your team does better than the Braves. G'night hotties
I love the Braves. Seriously.
so 6-8? they lead us on the first 6 games with that 5-1 crap
think I'll become a sox fan when I get to Massachusetts..
I love the Braves, too, because they keep me humble. No way to get the big head over them.
Jhag, it's April...baseball is streaky this time of year.
And Auburn lost to Samford tonight 8-2.....wow
of course, my comment is based on a dangerous assumption that Ralph Garr hasn't "lost a step"
I became a Braves fan and an Auburn fan in the same year - when we moved to Alabama when I was in the 6th grade. It's been a ride!
Auburn also lost Joseph Sanders to a broken jaw, I think.
ehyou,
You still here? Didn't you say you were in the car biz?
Sweet dreams Cincy. Just dream about Aaron, Evans, Johnson cranking HRs
I became a Braves fan, AU fan, and UNC fan the year I was born...the same year they all won championships in baseball, football, and basketball, respectively.
I don't think the fans were the reason for the loss.
And I don't think that is what he was saying no matter what Finebaum wants to say. He was saying that you have to be up for all games....fans, coaches, & players.
I think the whole combination of things led to the loss.
1) Letdown after being 10 mins from playing for the National Championship (coaches, players, & fans)
2) Andre Smith's agent issue
3) Utah was pretty damn good.
Jordan Shafer better not be a bust
yes, I'm a dinosaur
Wow, pretty good year to be born.
Schaefer played well tonight, had a brain fart on a double but other than that, came up big in spots. He really needs to be in the top 2 hitters. I hate Escobar and Johnson in those spots.
ducks 1-1 sharks
8th seed ducks up 2 games to 0 over top seed sharks
unfortunately, being "born again" didn't get those results
Well, some things are better than winning ballgames
Well it didn't seem like he had to bring the fans into the conversation, FSJ. He's just a control freak and feels like he needs to have control of absolutely everything, IMO.
Wartiger ...
"Hope is a good thing ..." is from Shawshank Redemption.
Bark ... this team wasn't very good ... 4-12, I think.
amen cincy, now get some sleep! I'll keep an eye on the hockey game so you don't have to.

Thanks, THT, that relieves my mind!
Heck...Bryant used to do the same thing. From what my dad says he told the fans that were complaining about the sub par season to go to hell on his coaches' show in 1969.
As long as he keeps winning I don't care who he ticks off.
Shula didn't offend anybody. But he didn't win either.
This is the thread that wouldn't die.
Faker - I'm surprised at your interpretation of Saban's comments.
Just think, Monica ...
It's only 8:10 on the West Coast ... the UCLA subject is just warming up.
Hi Mon- want to talk about UCLA?
I am surprised people are still talking about that. The Alabama players just got blown off the field. Whether or not the fans were excited is irrelevant.
2-2 hockey game, still 1st period
Hey Monica,
Do you like hockey or nascar or am I the only one who doesn't?
Well, if the Bear did it.....haha
You're right though, if he keeps going 12-0, he'll be able to say whatever he wants to about the fans.
I'm amazed at how many Bama fans are NOT offended at Saban's comments.
and barkley he is a control freak....
Most great coaches are.
My two favorite hockey players are Sean Avery, Tie Domi, and Ray Emery. Tell me why I watch hockey. Oh, and I played as a kid, and have had season tickets to NHL and ECHL teams at various time, so I understand the game just fine....I don't, however, watch NASCAR for the wrecks. I like the subtle intricacies of racing. Plus, racing is FAST!
FSJ what did bama do to make Ladarius Owens 'feel uncomfortable' on his visit?
