Spring winners

TUESDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,195

So that's another spring practice period in the books. All in all, it unfolded how I expected: Not much access, not much substance. That doesn't mean I'll keep my opinions to myself, of course, because a blog with no slog is a bore.

How do you feel about that?

I sometimes stroll down the avenue as people approach and ask: Mr. Tate, who surprised you this spring? My first instinct is to look for my dad, the real Mr. Tate, but he doesn't know anything about Auburn football. He's a Louisville graduate and a Tulsa fan.

You talkin' to me? Of course. Let me dish.
  • Neil Caudle: Duh. Here's a kid whom many skeptics believed should be playing at Samford. Instead, he endured his season in exile and now appears to have become a serious contender for the starting job. It's important to note that the interceptions Tony Franklin hated so much really did occur. Still, the word I'm getting is that Caudle wasn't prone to interceptions this spring. He has a chance.

  • Onterio McCalebb: He was supposed to be extremely quick and he is extremely quick. What I saw of him matched exactly what the scouting reports indicated. He looks like a future star to me. How far into the future? I think Auburn needs that home-run potential right now.

  • Christian Thompson: I had a high opinion of him out of high school (he's a 2008 grad), but the safety driftd from my consciousness last year. That's what the scout team will do for you. I have heard surprisingly enthusiastic chatter about Thompson's refinement throughout the spring. I didn't get much of a chance to see him perform -- I spent most of my practice time watching offensive skill players -- but I expect Thompson to be a useful performer this fall.

  • Clinton Durst: I'm not a football coach, but I know me and I know I'd have sent Durst packing this winter. He appeared to have left the team in January. He was upset that Auburn's new coaching staff hadn't yet offered him a scholarship. After the new coaching staff reaffirmed its position that Durst needed to prove himself in the spring, Durst lost his leverage. He came crawling back and did exactly what he said he wouldn't do: Competed for a spot without a scholarship in hand.

He had a good spring. He's a good punter. He'll likely earn that scholarship, but he should be grateful that Gene Chizik doesn't hold grudges.

Yeah, Arkansas State goes undefeated, beating Iowa, Louisville, and Nebraska along the way, then an SEC team in the Sugar Bowl, and the 2010 home opener suddenly turns into a nationally televised game.

I'm certainly not advocating the position that a game with Arkansas State is more "attractive" than a game with UCLA.

I'm to blame for this getting started back up, as it had died in the previous thread.

So you can send your hate email to blamejet@jetisreallyjayjacobs.com.

Thank you.

Wait a minute, didn't Arkansas State change its name from the Indians to the Puppets to satisfy the NCAA Thought Police?

Michael, I wasn't saying that it would effect recruiting. I was just saying that we will take a media hit for it.

If we were in the hunt for the national title in 2010, and there were two other teams also in the discussion, you can bet the UCLA opportunity will be thrown in our face.

Sorry, Southern Arkansas, not Central Arkansas...I must have been thinking of Scottie Pippen.

RK- do you usually think of Scottie Pippen.

I had a hooters waitress once that looked like Scottie Pippen.

Didn't we have to PAY Ark State a mil to get them to come and lose?

5:03 PM

Never really think of Scottie Pippen, but when I typed Central Arkansas all I could think of was the Bulls announcer saying "...and from Central Arkansas # 33 Scottie Pippen".

However a waitress that looked like Scottie Pippen is scary...but at least she didn't look like Willie McGee.

5:28 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Bark, I think it does take away from the point. You're trying to support the pro-UCLA stance by saying it would help if Auburn was in a 3 way national title conversation. The fact is, barring a mircle, the program won't be anywhere near there. Auburn goes 2-10 and the problem you bring up will be averted and Arkansas State was a good team to schedule as they account for 50%.of
the wins.

Peter- Was Alabama going to be in the National Championship picture last year? I know nobody thought that they would, but they were up till the SEC Championship game. The Clemson game gave Alabama confidence and they used that to jump start their season and make a run at the Championship. If we go 2-10, does it really matter that we could have been 3-7? Early games give you confidence and momentum if you win them and if you don't, then the character of the team will stand out. Unfortunately we have been on the bad side of those season's win loosing to a marque game to open the season.

5:46 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

Ok Peter, you win. Let's just assume we're not capable of contending for a national title, schedule some cupcakes, head to Shreveport.

i cannot believe I read all these posts. I need to stop working in order to keep up.

It was a mistake to not scheule UCLA. Win or lose take the game. if you don't want to play them because you may lose, then get out of the SEC and join Conference USA or the Sunbelt. For most football fans, we are a regiona; team. They have heard of us but, know us a s a regional team. If you want your name mentioned with the high profile teams, you better schedule high profile teams to establish yourself.

7:47 PM
Blogger wtc said...

FSU and Miami were door mats for a long time. They started scheduling big name teams and finally go their prgram to the top. Why just be on the fringe of big time college programs. Mna up and go play the big teams. I do not care if we have a RS freshman QB. It was only one game. Play it and move on.

If someone is concerned that AU has a history of losing season opener big time games, playing Ark St, UTD, or Citabel is not going to change that history. The only way to change it is to play a big time game and win it.

Jet I understand your point. I just feel the game was offered at the right time and would help AU propel itself into a national spotlight that it has to work extra hard to get anyway.

I love the Braves, too, because they keep me humble. No way to get the big head over them.

Jhag, it's April...baseball is streaky this time of year.

And Auburn lost to Samford tonight 8-2.....wow

of course, my comment is based on a dangerous assumption that Ralph Garr hasn't "lost a step"

I became a Braves fan and an Auburn fan in the same year - when we moved to Alabama when I was in the 6th grade. It's been a ride!

Auburn also lost Joseph Sanders to a broken jaw, I think.

ehyou,
You still here? Didn't you say you were in the car biz?

Sweet dreams Cincy. Just dream about Aaron, Evans, Johnson cranking HRs

I became a Braves fan, AU fan, and UNC fan the year I was born...the same year they all won championships in baseball, football, and basketball, respectively.

I don't think the fans were the reason for the loss.

And I don't think that is what he was saying no matter what Finebaum wants to say. He was saying that you have to be up for all games....fans, coaches, & players.

I think the whole combination of things led to the loss.

1) Letdown after being 10 mins from playing for the National Championship (coaches, players, & fans)

2) Andre Smith's agent issue

3) Utah was pretty damn good.

Schaefer played well tonight, had a brain fart on a double but other than that, came up big in spots. He really needs to be in the top 2 hitters. I hate Escobar and Johnson in those spots.

ducks 1-1 sharks

8th seed ducks up 2 games to 0 over top seed sharks

unfortunately, being "born again" didn't get those results

Blogger cincytiger said...

Well, some things are better than winning ballgames

10:05 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

Well it didn't seem like he had to bring the fans into the conversation, FSJ. He's just a control freak and feels like he needs to have control of absolutely everything, IMO.

Bark ... this team wasn't very good ... 4-12, I think.

amen cincy, now get some sleep! I'll keep an eye on the hockey game so you don't have to.

Heck...Bryant used to do the same thing. From what my dad says he told the fans that were complaining about the sub par season to go to hell on his coaches' show in 1969.

As long as he keeps winning I don't care who he ticks off.

Shula didn't offend anybody. But he didn't win either.

This is the thread that wouldn't die.

Faker - I'm surprised at your interpretation of Saban's comments.

Just think, Monica ...

It's only 8:10 on the West Coast ... the UCLA subject is just warming up.

10:11 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Hi Mon- want to talk about UCLA?

10:11 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I am surprised people are still talking about that. The Alabama players just got blown off the field. Whether or not the fans were excited is irrelevant.

2-2 hockey game, still 1st period

10:12 PM

Hey Monica,
Do you like hockey or nascar or am I the only one who doesn't?

10:12 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

Well, if the Bear did it.....haha

You're right though, if he keeps going 12-0, he'll be able to say whatever he wants to about the fans.

I'm amazed at how many Bama fans are NOT offended at Saban's comments.

My two favorite hockey players are Sean Avery, Tie Domi, and Ray Emery. Tell me why I watch hockey. Oh, and I played as a kid, and have had season tickets to NHL and ECHL teams at various time, so I understand the game just fine....I don't, however, watch NASCAR for the wrecks. I like the subtle intricacies of racing. Plus, racing is FAST!
