Spring winners

TUESDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,195

So that's another spring practice period in the books. All in all, it unfolded how I expected: Not much access, not much substance. That doesn't mean I'll keep my opinions to myself, of course, because a blog with no slog is a bore.

How do you feel about that?

I sometimes stroll down the avenue as people approach and ask: Mr. Tate, who surprised you this spring? My first instinct is to look for my dad, the real Mr. Tate, but he doesn't know anything about Auburn football. He's a Louisville graduate and a Tulsa fan.

You talkin' to me? Of course. Let me dish.
  • Neil Caudle: Duh. Here's a kid whom many skeptics believed should be playing at Samford. Instead, he endured his season in exile and now appears to have become a serious contender for the starting job. It's important to note that the interceptions Tony Franklin hated so much really did occur. Still, the word I'm getting is that Caudle wasn't prone to interceptions this spring. He has a chance.

  • Onterio McCalebb: He was supposed to be extremely quick and he is extremely quick. What I saw of him matched exactly what the scouting reports indicated. He looks like a future star to me. How far into the future? I think Auburn needs that home-run potential right now.

  • Christian Thompson: I had a high opinion of him out of high school (he's a 2008 grad), but the safety driftd from my consciousness last year. That's what the scout team will do for you. I have heard surprisingly enthusiastic chatter about Thompson's refinement throughout the spring. I didn't get much of a chance to see him perform -- I spent most of my practice time watching offensive skill players -- but I expect Thompson to be a useful performer this fall.

  • Clinton Durst: I'm not a football coach, but I know me and I know I'd have sent Durst packing this winter. He appeared to have left the team in January. He was upset that Auburn's new coaching staff hadn't yet offered him a scholarship. After the new coaching staff reaffirmed its position that Durst needed to prove himself in the spring, Durst lost his leverage. He came crawling back and did exactly what he said he wouldn't do: Competed for a spot without a scholarship in hand.

He had a good spring. He's a good punter. He'll likely earn that scholarship, but he should be grateful that Gene Chizik doesn't hold grudges.

barkley - the topic (about 924 hours ago) was what Saban said and what the fans thought about it.

a few days ago he said bama had a culture where the expectations were too high and before that he said
"There's very little interest from our fans, our players or anybody else to play in the Sugar Bowl, which to me is a tremendous opportunity," Saban said. "I tried to tell everyone, you're only going to remember one thing about this game and that's the outcome. So there's no interest, there's no passion and everybody is embarrassed because of how we played. Well, it's because you didn't have any passion for it, you didn't have any interest in it, you didn't have any enthusiasm to do it, and that's across the board. And that's not right. We go to a BCS bowl game, everybody ought to be positive and enthusiastic about what we're doing."

WE need to get Seastrunk and Lattimore to visit at the same time, bring them into the same office...put on tapes of Caddy and Ronnie, and Felix Jones and DMAC

Theres a small chance we land both...

“It just makes me feel good,” Lattimore says. “A running back can succeed in the offense. It has been proven today and with Darren McFadden and Felix Jones. Lache was telling me about it. Just the vision of me and him being back there at the same time would just be nasty. “It’s definitely something we’ve talked about,” he adds. “It could explode if we went to Auburn. He said (his visit to Auburn) was the best experience he’s ever had. He had a good time. He loves all the coaches and he likes the offense. He’s just anxious to see what they’re going to do this year.” Said Lattimore

Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

Ya I'm thinking if we go 5-7 were gonna blow away all the 5-stars

7 wins or more should reel in a few

10:50 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

As long as we make LSU/GA/Bama games respectable, and hopefully grab one, the recruits should should be pleased.

The offense actually has to move though........forward.

10:53 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Jhag I think if we can get Ben and Fannin and or Ontario to have big seasons, we have a good chance to close the deal with those two.

10:53 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I dunno. 5 stars want to be somewhere they can contribute and be stars right away. The also want to win. It's a fine line. The key, when the record isn't so good, is convincing them that they are the missing link that will step on the field and instantly turn this losing team into a winning team. A good recruiter can do that.

10:54 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I got the devil comment.

10:56 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Ok I've heard AU fans say that hopefully we will not lose the games we should win like we did under Tubs. My question is can we win the games we're suppose to lose like under Tubs? I dont think either QB can "win" a game for us. I dont know if Chiz can out coach the big boys in the SEC but I think Malzahn can out think a few DCs in this league. That could at least buy us at least one upset right?

Of the projected 32 first round NFL draft picks, 7 of the players were 5* coming out of high school.

10:57 PM

I agree..but its essential they get Seastrunk and Lattimore on the same official visit and bring them in a office together and show them RB duo's...this would be so wise im gonna call and tell CHIZI

Is Onterrio NFL eligible after 2 seasons at AU? Or just one? I'm thinking 2, but I don't remember his story.

10:58 PM
Blogger Jet said...

BigCat (sorry folks for the rerun)...

We already have a BCS opponent on schedule for 2010. Playing two plus an 8 game SEC schedule with no bunnies is asking a lot for a second-year coach who may be starting a new QB.

We would lose a home game, which affects our bottom line and the Auburn community.

I also reject the supposed "benefits" of the game -- recruiting, exposure, etc. We're pretty much on TV 8-9 times a year as it is and we seem to be attracting attention from top recruits without the game.

I like our intended philosophy of one BCS level opponent and three lesser opponents (Division I, not I-AA).

Personally, I view the brouhaha as much about ego as anything else and the desire to get another big game on the ticket package. But there's a price tag to that, and I think Jay is wise to take a pass in 2010 and look toward setting up a series in 2012 (with someone) when Clemson rolls off. I realize I am decidedly in the minority opinion.

That's about it.

those would be good games. Forget Wake or Duke as someone suggested a few pages back. Their stadiums are less than half the size of JH.

11:11 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

that same thought crossed my mind the other day bigcat.

i think consistency in coaching preparation and the ability to actually adjust to the flow of the game at halftime is something tub's staff never brought to the table. so far, it appears the new staff is going to demand excellence and attempt to motivate the team in a way tub's guys never quite did. and gus has proven at tulsa he can adapt his system to his personnel as well as what the other team tries to do to stop him.

when tubs pulled those rabbits out of his hat, it was usually because AU played a near perfect game under the right circumstances and the other team was unable to adapt to AU's gameplan. when AU laid an egg, it was usually AU's inability or unwillingness to adapt to the wrinkles the other team threw at them be offense or defense.

I'm still pissed at wake and the refs for stealing a game from us in 1979. AU was up 38-20 at half and lost 42-38. (wake is still my 2nd fav ACC team, though). Duke? I just don't like them at all any more.

11:16 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

a not-so-classic tubby egg was the 2000 MSU game. mazzone said AU was going to come out and run right at the MSU DL. he did for 3-1/2 quarters and got zippo. all of the sudden AU started passing and made it interesting for about 5 minutes.

i don't see gus falling into that trap easily.

if a player is recruited by UAT, LSU, UF, UGA, UT, FSU, Ohio State, Michigan, ND, TX, etc. they are going to get mysterious extra stars. those fanbases pay the bills at the pay sites more than AU, Ole Miss, etc. not that the evaluations are not relatively accurate, i'm just sure they pander to sell subscriptions more than some fans would like to think.

Good morning Hotties - I'm on day 3 of the peace and solitude tour in the gatiger household while the wife & son are out of town until next week. I'm ready for the noise again. But, I digress. My personal woes have nothing at all to do with the woeful state of leadership in the AU Athletic Department. If AU isn't going to play the likes of UCLA, they should then be a Regional team. If they're a Regional team, let's line up against ALL of the in-state schools, not just UAT. Bring on UAB, bring on UAH, USA, Troy, Samford, and whatever other podunk schools are out there like UWA (I have no idea if they have a football team).

I for one am perfectly willing to gripe and moan about this issue until August when I'll find another topic.

BUT, my company has a Suite at Philips which comes with most excellent seats. I've been to several hockey games via those seats and have thoroughly enjoyed it. When does the crowd calender come out for HABOTN? According to my research, this was supposed to be the value season with low attendance, yet i'm starring at a 700+ post count.

We may have to debate the UCLA game or lack there of until at least July for SEC media days.

RK - We're headed to Athens to meet my sister and crew to pick up my Mother who is coming for a visit.

Athens, TN was the first place I lived after Auburn graduation. It was beautiful. Wifey and I loved it.

7:38 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Yeah, we're a regional program if we don't play UCLA.

We've finished in the polls 18 out of the last 25 years ... were ranked in the poll two other years.

Of those seven times we didn't make the final poll, we won at least 7 games three of those seasons.

Got regional program written all over us.

7:38 AM
Blogger Monica said...

It's about a 5 hour drive for us which beats having to drive 9 to B'ham. to get Muuutha.

7:39 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Monica,

I've been to Athens several times. I grew up across the river from there in Dayton, TN.

Jet,

I admire your passion for your side of the UCLA argument, but I still have yet to find an answer that satisifies my "why would we not want to play UCLA" question.

7:43 AM
Blogger ehyou said...

Hey, did y'all hear that we're not playing UCLA? Discuss.

7:43 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Can everyone agree that Jay Jacobs stinks regardless of your position of the UCLA game?

7:44 AM
Blogger Norm said...

Eddie - YES.

7:45 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I can't agree. I'm too ignorant to form an opinion based on internet chatter.

7:46 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Eddie,

My answer is yes, I think it's probably everyones answer as well.

I'll hold out my answer of that being a universal yes until I see SteveFC's response.

7:47 AM
Blogger ehyou said...

RK..
I see you live in Chattanooga. I built a middle school in Chatsworth 2 years ago.

I made an attempt to hit every barbecue joint in town. Master Blaster was my favorite.

7:47 AM
Blogger Monica said...

I've been watching for an answer to that question too, RK.

7:48 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Master Blaster is excellent. I've always been partial to Rib & Loin.

7:50 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Ok, I'll just say no. I'd hate for us to have a "universal" opinion.

You can't go wrong with a BBQ place who's phone numbers are 877-PORK & 499-OINK.

You have to love Steve's answers.

If I recall correctly, Steve was 100% for retaining Tuberville, but he also believes this program is 4+ years away from being back? He makes me laugh out loud. Steve is the Ying to the Yang.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

why am I here. I'm supposed to be working.

RK- I second that with Pork & Loin. I think they are the best in Chattanooga, behind my Dad's :)!

Compare the (lack of) UCLA game to the film Marly and Me.

7:53 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Peter,
I haven't seen either.

7:54 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Geez, Marley and Me. That movie is at the house and my wife want's to watch it. I'd rather not, so does that mean I'd rather not play UCLA....?

7:55 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I'd rather draw an analogy between Chiz/Josey Wales and Saban/Red Legs

7:55 AM
Blogger Norm said...

PF - the lack of a UCLA game and the blatant disregard for AU fandom by JJ absolutely stinks. As for Marley and Me, the book made me cry and so did the movie even though I knew what to expect.

So there. I've admitted it. I've cried at a book and a movie (actually a number of movies). But that has nothing to do with the shameful UCLA situation.

7:57 AM
Blogger ehyou said...

Oh my gosh. My 6 yr old girl watched Marley & Me over the weekend. There were gut wrenching sobs involved.

It was brutal. I wasn't actively watching, but was in the room. My wife compared it to Where The Red Fern Grows in terms of tears, if that tells you anything.

8:10 AM
Blogger Norm said...

THT - I liked the Chief too, especially in Little Big Man.

THT & Scottie B - ditto again. The wife and I cried at the book and the movie because we've experienced many parallels with the story. Our Golden Retriever version of Marley is still with us after 10.5 years. She's never been boarded. If she can't go out of town with us or the in-laws can't keep her, we stay home.

8:12 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Before I go to work ...

Jay Jacobs = mediocre to weak AD. Not dreadful. Just not good. The rest is just whining about those who really make the decisions.

After Ol' Yeller, I don't watch dog centric movies. I'll cry at a commercial.

If a BBQ joint or a hamburger joint has a web site, watch out. Not sayin' it ain't good, I'm just sayin' watch out.

OINK in the telephone number? It's got a chance to be a good place.

For BBQ and burgers and such, the smaller the menu the better.

I'm just hoping to be alive in 25 years when we return from the Steve-imposed wilderness walk for Auburn football.

And I had no idea that 22 hours ago when I posted my treatise that I would launch a thousand hells.

What a great day.

8:12 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I was still crying as I exited the cinema after Watching Marley and me. I've only cry at football games when there is an eagle circling around the stadium. The UCLA game wouldn't elicit such a response if it were to be played.

Being an animal lover myself, I refuse to watch sad animal movies or commericals with Sarah McLachlan on them.

8:16 AM

Agree, again, 100% with RK.
Those Sarah M. commercials are gut wrenching.

8:19 AM
Blogger michael said...

UCLA scheduling issue.

8:19 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Jet - You are absolutely right on the BBQ/burger comments. May I suggest you never eat at The Pit in Raleigh. What a marketing genius. A BBQ joint that requires reservations, has a bar, etc. We didn't know any of that when we showed up for supper on a Sat evening. Food wasn't bad, but certainly not as good as we had for lunch earlier that day in a BBQ joint converted from a filling station in 1938 (and not changed much since).

8:19 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

PeterF- yep, that eagle will do it to me, too. WAR EAGLE!!!

Have I seen the Sarah McLachlan commercials? Do I know who y'all are talking about? What is her opinion of AU playing UCLA?

8:22 AM
Blogger Norm said...

Pardon my ignorance; but, what are these Sarah M commercials to which you refer? Outside of news or sport events, anything I watch on tv is via the DVR so I'll zip past the commercials.

8:23 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

My wife would board me before boarding our baby. We rarely take her with us, so our neighbor takes good care of us while we're gone. That way, Molly gets to sleep in her own bed (the one she so kindly shares with us).

8:23 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

those Sara M. commercials....i have to change the channel. i want to adopt all those little doggies.

8:24 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

oops, the neighbor takes good care of Molly, not us. We can take care of ourselves. Well, my wife can take care of both of us. I've been told I can't take care of myself.

8:27 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The Sarah McLachlan commericals are her showing all of these sad pets who need homes and make it feel like if you personally don't adopt those pets that you are responsible for their death.

They aren't the standard 30 or 60 second commericals, they are 2-3 mins long and it has her song "Angel" playing in the background just to make it sound sadder.

I usually catch the commercial during NCIS or House reruns on USA.

8:30 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

It's not that we don't want to play UCLA, it's just that we won't. Yes Jacobs is a buffoon. Yes Sarah McLaughlan commercials are terrible...and I won't ever watch a movie where I know a dog dies at the end.

8:30 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

THT,

Interesting enough, because of my inability to control my emotions with the eagle , I knew I'd get along with my finacee's father the first time I went to a UGA game with him. As the lone trumpet player was playing Glory from the corner of the stadium, I looked over and noticed he was tearing up. That kind of love and dedication hit home with me.

Some guy named Finebaum reported that
Auburn In Store For Tough Year. Is he always this eloquent and flattering?

8:32 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Finebaum is wheat in the wind, if the wind blows our way, he'll be talking us up very soon.

8:35 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Speaking of F-baum, he was quite put-off by the Saban comments Re: fans. Everytime someone tried to justify it to him, he would cut them off and go to a break.

8:38 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

2009 could be a very tough year for us. I really can't argue much with Finebaum's 6-6 prediction (except that I think we will win in Knoxville), or his assessment of Jay Jacobs.

8:40 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Is there something wrong with me (this is a rhetorical question) because I probably wouldn't have married if it wasn't to an Auburn girl?

8:40 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

with our lack of depth, especially as related to OL, our season could get ugly with just a few key injuries.

8:41 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Well guys just some perspective...Bammer was coming off a less than stellar season, had depth issues at OL, didn't have a QB that could do much or any real playmakers outside of a true freshman, had a solid defense that was dependent on a couple of new comers producing....sound familiar?

8:44 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

A big difference is JPW was a 5th year senior and a veteran of the SEC wars.

Senior starting QB's with SEC experience are always worth a few wins each year, no matter how limited they seem heading into their senior year.

8:46 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

If Pugh gets injured(knock on wood), can one of the scholarship longsnappers short snap so that a guard doesn't have to be moved over?

8:46 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

usually the long snappers are barely over 200 lbs. That could potentially create a serious problem up front.

8:48 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I'm sure it's possible, but for the most part the long snappers are a lot smaller and lighter than a normal center since they also run down on special teams on punts.

8:48 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

RK I'm tired of your naysaying and lack of Kool-Aid consuming! Let me pump my sunshine while I still can.

8:48 AM

Thank you for that RK. I wanted to say that yesterday when the comparison was made, but couldn't bring myself to publicly praise a bama player.

it is nice to know we have that kind of depth at long snapper, though.
