Lane Kiffin takes another hit

So I'm watching this ESPN report on Lane Kiffin.

ESPN asked the Oakland Raiders for comment. The Raiders. A real organization.

Here is the team's response:

"Lane Kiffin is a flat-out liar. He lied to the team, he lied to the fans and he lied to the media. He will destroy that university like he tried to destroy the Raiders and will eventually clash with (Pat) Summitt and (Bruce) Pearl. Other than that, the Raiders can say nothing further."

Holy cow. I'd love to know what Kiffin did to Al Davis.

I don't know if you kids are golf fans ... but as of right now, there's a 4-way tie for the lead, a 3-way tie (Tiger, Furyk and Love) one shot back, and Ernie Els two shots back.

Now that's substantial.

I miss the days when leaders in the game played by middle aged white men had normal names.

Here we have a carnivorous animal, a name that gets you 'randomly screened' at the airport, and some hormone that makes your heartbeat go up.

As for Fob James getting in a physical confrontation with Lowder, I have never heard of it, but it would be hilarious. Now, Lowder might give Bill Gates a good fight, but the idea of him fighting with Lowder, well, all I can think of is R.I.P. Lowder.

The Kiffin hire never made sense to me. Yea, if he had been the OC at USC for a significant number of years and successful, maybe I could see it. But the guy is like 33 years old. My eldest son isn't too much younger than him. It looks like Tennesse would have went with a guy with a more lengthy resume and who had been through puberty.

I must admit that I think Kiffin did a good job of selecting a very experienced staff. It is actually another very young coach that had a dad that was a legendary NFL coach did.

His comments that there are no full serve gas stations is wrong. In Oregon and several other states all gas stations have full serve. It is the law. They require a gas deliver specialist at the pump.

The most memorable event of the 2002 game at Souther Cal was my ability to guess Auburn's 2nd half offensive plays correctly about 90% of the time. I've never played organized football. So if a dumbass (to coin a self-appellation) can figure it out, it shouldn't have been surprising that Southern Cal shut us down in the 2nd half.

Watching Christmas Vacation in the middle of June is a treat.

As I departed the stadium in Athens two years ago, trudging back to my car for the drive home (all alone), I saw a UGA fan giving an AU fan down the road. The AU fan was taking it. Finally, his female wife/GF/significant other decided she'd had enough.

Her statement, as I best I recall: "He's not gonna do anything, but I will. If you don't show some class and STFU, I will kick your @$$, (dismember you) and set your @$$ on fire."

Total silence for 5 seconds, then everybody around them -- fans of both schools busted out in laughter.

here is an interesting part from an interview with tyronne green from scout.com's san deigo chargers site:

How did you feel about the direction Auburn's offense moved towards last season as Tommy Tuberville and Tony Franklin tried to implement the spread offense?

TG: I don't really know what to feel about it. I bought into the system and kind of went with the flow. I was excited about it and thought it would be a big hit for us, putting up big numbers like the Floridas, and the Texas Techs and Oklahomas. So we all, as a team, bought into the system and unfortunately it didn't work out very well as far as the season went. For me, I bought into the system, and it shows me that I can be more versatile in what I can do.

he goes on to discuss being there with rod smith and marcus mcneill and the intensity of mini camp.

i think for all the talk about folks not buying into the franklin experience, it was more coaches than players and the coaches' misgivings seeped into the mentality of the players as the season went on. this only reaffirms my belief that a majority of the staff members were the problem, not tubs or the talent of the players or even franklin.

12:58 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Chip chip, I think there is blame to go around. I have read where Franklin said that Tuberville had told him to change QBs at times, so I do think Tuberville deserves some of the blame.

I also think Franklin deserves some of the blame because he lacked the people skills to sell his offense to his assistants.

Yea, the assistants likely deserve some of the blame too.

It is just how the world works. People want to find one person to blame, but usually it isn't that simple.

1. There is no doubt in my mind that Al Davis thinks Daryle Lamonica is still the Raiders' quarterback.

2. It is my opinion that Kiffin, while obnoxious, may be taking the calculated risk that being showy is the way to go in a division with Meyer, Richt and Spurrier.

3. I think it's inconsistent to ascribe ineptitude to a coach that goes 5-15 in the league where you play the cards you are dealt (courtesy of a lunatic owner), yet we find plenty of excuses for our coach who was 5-19.

Don't misunderstand me, I love Chiz. I'm happy with everything I've seen. I'm just not ready to write off Kiffin as a moron. He'll have to earn that on the field.

Kiffin is a jerk. I am incredibly glad we did not hire him. Orgeron is also scuzz.

As for football prowess, he had success when he had Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, and all the other players money could buy at USC playing in the PAC 10. The players had been trained under Norm Chow. I think what Chiz has accomplished as a coach is a step above Kiffin. (and you can't accuse me of ever defending the Chiz hire, either)

could butt hurt be any more of a tool? i didn't think so until i read this. he tried to cover it up but most people have some level of reading comprehension.

"People who were gravely concerned about NCAA secondary violations when they involved Nick Saban and the “bump rule” are quick to praise obvious secondary violations of the rules regarding campus visits at Auburn as “pushing the envelope.”

if AU had committed a few hundred secondary violations on BCW, i would be concerned.
there were maybe two or three on the surface.
$aban was accused by many schools inside and outside the sec of various secondary violations besides "bumping" for hours at a time. enough for the ncaa to write a rule that playfully got $aban's name tagged to it. STRIKE ONE

"Before anyone reads anything into the “delay,” it’s not a delay. Even if UA doesn’t hear anything until July, that would still fall within a working window of 10 to 20 weeks that seems to be the current COI procedure."

i'm pretty sure the ncaa guidlines state 6-8 weeks after the COI hearing (but don't rule out longer). that seems to fall in line with when sanctions against the USA tennis team were announced. they were present at the same COI hearing in san deigo as UAT and were accused of major violations. STRIKE TWO.

"not a single article that I have read has pointed out that the two in-state institutions, who have a combined 11 major violations cases between them, probably need to operate in an atmosphere where “seeing how much you can get away with” isn’t the sole consideration."

thanks for mentioning that butt. you didn't elaborate that AU has not been accused on any major violations in 15 years and those were because some UAT lawyers got to a poor player and his wife to set up a coach who was trying to help them because they were pleading with him to do so while taping the conversation. the ramsey family obviously had their hand out in two directions or to whoever else would put a $1 in it. in the meantime, I think UAT has had the last 4 major violations cases (jelks, langham, means, textbooks and more on the way). STRIKE THREE

look on the bright side butt hurt, maybe the next REC talking points they give you will be better.

That Track Em Tigers blog entry is one for the ages. I enjoyed it.

It's lazy in the sense that, as I have said, I lead the industry in accessibility. If this Other Jay had questions about the story and its alleged intentions, he could have asked me directly without much effort.

Then again, that would have diluted his point. That would suck.

Cecil's alright.

He likes to read books during games, which I would find terminally distracting, but he's knowledgeable. He's entertaining in print.

JayGT - shouldn't he have asked Josh Moon?

Blogger AUfan said...

I'll bet Jay would have loved to see Auburn hire Kiffin. He has to be a reporter's dream coach. I just don't see put much stock in what he did(or didn't do)with the Raiders. That job is a coach's graveyard.

10:28 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

then again, why didn't Josh Moon report why he did that outdated inteview? Is I Want to be Private Franklin calling all these people asking to be interviewed? If not, why on earth did they contact him? He is irrelevant now except to Middle Tenn State football.

10:31 AM
Blogger michael said...

Moon probably got the idea for this story in December and talked to Franklin about it, but they agreed to wait on its publication for the most opportune time to try to destroy Auburn football as we know it.

And while we're at it, I think that every reporter should put an essay at the end of their articles on why the article was worth writing. In fact, I will start doing that on my comments.

--------------------------

This comment was worth writing because I am a sarcastic person and sometimes people like reading sarcasm. Thusly so, I wrote a post that is topical yet sarcastic, and I feel that these details made it worthy for posting.

Jet, I wasn't being entirely serious about Mr. Kiffin. I should have led with a more sarcastic Al Davis remark, which you did so kudos. I've not yet hit the JET prowess when it comes to posting.

jgt, i'm sure cecil is an alright guy personally. the fact that he reads books during games tells me his stories are written for him or by him in advance because he knows what his is supposed to say. wink! he's a 3rd rate journalist/reporter though. i'd say the same if he was an AU beat writer. he'll write about anything bad at AU, even though he does not cover the team or know anything about it. that just screams hack to me. I know philip marshall is an AU homer to a large extent, but the difference is, PM admits it and still tries to keep it objective.

Welcome to the deadest of the dead period before football season. It's not as bad as years past. At least there is some recruiting notes to read. However, it's all blah until media days gives us things to hash about. Granted, those things are hardly credible, but they do provide conversation points and that gives fans something to do in between real life.

"Alabama lost a heart-breaking hard-fought game against the powerhouse Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks on a wonderful Saturday afternoon in Tuscaloosa. ULM is a team on the rise and don't be surprised if they are in contention for a BCS bowl in a few years. If not for about 10 bad calls by the officials, 20 poor plays from Alabama, and a lot of bad luck, Alabama could have easily dispatched this fearsome team by a score of something like 51-7. Alabama and coach $aban will chalk this up as a learning experience. $aban declared games like this part of the process and the reason he is paid $4 million a year is to teach young men life lessons like the one they learned in this game."

that is cecil's type of journalism.

what i'm saying jay, is i like you because of your impartiality. that is refreshing in this state. PM does a very good job covering AU objectively even though he admittedly has some close ties to the program and has followed AU for a long time. i used the term "homer" loosely in reference to him and probably should not have. i was trying to save space since i've been the master of rambling media conspiracy posts the last few days.

and if cecil is not a good guy personally, i don't feel bad attacking his biased reporting in the least anymore.

11:16 AM
Blogger AUfan said...

Jay, can you explain why you don't think PMarsh is an AU homer? I have read Marshall for years(and enjoy his work), but I've always thought of him like I did watching Phil Snow do the evening sports report. They report the sports, but I know where their loyalties are. Maybe I have been wrong about him. I've always said it was shameful the way Auburn dumped Phil, BTW.

11:17 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

Chip,

I agree with you on PMarsh. He tends to be a sunshine pumper with one exception that I can cite. I'm still surprised at his original article when Chizik was hired. Didn't he remove that one from his site quickly though?

Now as far as Cecil goes, I would say that he is the source on Alabama football. Some would say that he is a little too close to the program and that may be true. With that said, I think that he, Jay, & (believe it or not) Finebaum are the best writers in the state talent wise from our pool of sportswriters/columnists.

11:17 AM
Blogger chip chip said...

ha, FSJ admitted it!!! that's going straight on the AU pay site message boards!!!!

just kidding. THE HABOTN still loves its resident alabama fan. we AU fans need to nurture our relationships with "normal bama fans" in the hopes we can show them the error of their ways and bring them back from the dark side. if it can be done with darth vader, FSJ has hope. i can feel the "war eagle" in him dying to come out!

Blogger chip chip said...

FSJ, cecil is close to the program because of one reason: they let him be close. he is their mouthpiece of choice. if he wrote a damaging investigative story, he would be expelled immediately and none of his sources would ever speak to him again. and then he would have nothing to write about, hence no use to ttown news or finebaum, and hence be getting an unemployment check like me. he just knows where his bread is buttered, and sugar coated and glazed in honey.

and i actually agree with you about finebaum. the talent is there and it seeps through every now and again. he's just done too much over the years to compromise his editorial integrity in my eyes. everyone knows he's not much different than cecil.

11:28 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

Chip,

Cecil was the first active writer (I'm not counting Finebaum here) to start calling for Shula's head in 2006.

He may be close to the program but he doesn't always toe the company line. Additionally I've heard him say that the textbook case is inexcusable.

11:31 AM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

So last week bammies and Auburn both got commitments (from #1 in the state). But there was a difference in the way they committed.

One committed in a press conference. Other committed sitting next to his grandpa in a hospital.

And that was the difference JR was talking about. Welcome to the family, JR. And War Damn Eagle.

11:33 AM
Blogger Jet said...

FSJ ...

I would say Cecil being first to call for Shula's head in 2006 lends weight to Chip's point.

Personally, when I think of Cecil, I think of the Bruce Willis character in "Bonfire of the Vanities," sans the alcohol issues.

11:33 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

You may have a point Jet..

Since it is oh so obvious that Alabama had contact with Saban's folks since about the Tennessee game of that year.

11:37 AM
Blogger michael said...

I dunno Jet... calling for a coach to be fired doesn't seem like the definition of pumping sunshine.

And if any writers have been sunshine pumpers for bama in the last year... well, let's admit it, it doesn't mean they are biased, it just means they are honest.

I must note that I have no idea who Cecil is or any other bama beat writer for that matter.

11:37 AM
Blogger Miller said...

Some folks may confuse writing talent with the viewpoints expressed by those writers.

11:38 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

michael,

I think Jet was implying that Cecil was the mouthpiece of the big wigs that wanted Shula gone.

Or at least that is the way I took it.

11:38 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

Agreed D. Miller.

I think that on pure talent alone the three I mentioned are the best the state has.

Now does that mean I agree with their viewpoints all the time?...No.

11:39 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Michael,

"Being a homer" doesn't always mean supporting the coach. Sometimes it means saying it's time for the coach to go, if that what the ruling junta wants you to write. Not necessarily saying that's what happened here. It can happen that way, though.

if cecil wasn't towing the company line and actually doing cutting edge investigative reporting. he would have broken the story of the ncaa's preliminary letter of investigation that was sent to bama in may 2007 and the subsequent letter containing the textbook allegations in october 2008 before february 2009 after national signing day and two #1 recruiting classes. he didn't know about them because he wasn't told about them so he didn't write about them. he first mentioned them february 2009 after he was given the all clear because it was released by bama to the media, not discovered through a freedom of information act request. if his sources are as good as they seem, he was duped or is an idiot. i think he was duped.
