Taylor and Luper talk it out

Hey everyone. Auburn assistants Trooper Taylor and Curtis Luper spent some time this afternoon holding a mock press conference for a group of high-school students.

The students were allowed to ask about anything that interested them.

Some of the questions were mundane. Some were excellent.

Here is an overview of what I thought were the best pieces of information gleaned:

  • LUPER on the way this staff recruits:
``We've been unique and different. We actually used limousines. That was our way, our head coach's way, of emphasizing the state of Alabama. We had to let people know that our coaching staff is here and we'll be out and about. It's unprecedented in college football. Generally, coaches go in different directions. We wanted to saturate the state of Alabama. We accomplished our goal."

  • TAYLOR on how Auburn plans to differentiate itself from Alabama in recruiting:
``A lot of people make mistakes in thinking it's us versus Alabama. That wasn't the goal. Our goal was to keep other schools from coming into this state and taking the best players. Look at JaMarcus Russell. He left Alabama, went to LSU and they won a national championship.

Patrick White leaves and goes to West Virginia. He put them on the map.
Our responsibility is that we take care of the state of Alabama. We'll outwork them -- no matter who it is."

  • TAYLOR on the lifestyle of an Auburn assistant:
If I wear my hat backward and walk into Wal-Mart, it's going to be a three-hour trip. It should be a 30-minute trip. My kids remind me of that all the time. At most places, they don't recognize the assistants; it's just the head coach. At Auburn, it's different.

  • LUPER on changes already made to the program:
"We are developing the culture of our football team. From A to Z. What are they like when they walk across the campus? What are they like when they walk in the building? Will they take their hats off? Will they say `yes sir' and `yes ma'am'? Do they take their earrings off? Will they pull their pants up? Everything. To develop that culture adequately takes a couple years."

  • TAYLOR on the role of football in his life:
``It's been more than a career for me. My father died when I was 12 years old. The men in my life have been coaches. I knew I wanted to coach when I was 13 years old. Those men brought me into their homes, took care of me, treated me like family. The funny thing is -- most of them weren't the same color as me and none of them had the same last name as me.

All they ever asked from me was for me to do my very best."

  • TAYLOR on why he named a son Star:
``for the side of the helmet of the Dallas Cowboys."

  • TAYLOR answering this question: "What was your reaction to the recruit who called out Nick Saban during Big Cat Weekend?"

(**HABOTN point of information: Player in question is TB Lache Seastrunk.)

``He's a 17 year old kid. We're not allowed to comment on their exact names and stuff, but he's a 17-year-old kid. We had to help him and make him understand why that was such a significant deal. He doesn't know. You can't be held accountable for something that you don't know.

Our job is to teach those guys, once they get here, between right and wrong. It's happened to me before. I wouldn't not have taken it personally. I would have considered the source."

  • TAYLOR on Alabama's recent NCAA troubles:

(**HABOTN point of information: Luper urged Taylor to no comment this one. Taylor couldn't help himself.)

I should give a no comment this, but I'll tell you this: I've got to mow my own grass. I can't tell you what's happening at another school. We'll learn from this, too. Even In life, you have to learn from other people's mistakes. I don't know the scenario or situation on how it got to be what it was, but I know we'll make sure we're not in that same scenario.

Anytime something happens that may affect our players, we take Cliff's Notes. We have a team meeting and we go over it -- whether it's a player getting arrested at another school or a student who may have gotten hurt with a bad choice.

We let them know: This could easily be you."

Coach trooper needs to name his son storm, and slap the rest of his name on there StormTrooper Taylor. Oh, i also got enough requests that i will post this on the interwebs for all of HABOTN to enjoy.

you need
1 c melted butter
1c brown sugar
1 red yellow and green bell
1 red and or yellow onion
1 poblano
blackening seasoning (i buy chef paul prudhommes)
couple cloves garlic
1 abita amber or turbodog , turbodog gives you a fruitier flavor
chicken stock (just don't use water, veggie stock is fine)
6 oz honey
sautee the bells, onion, poblano and garlic in the butter, (don't burn the butter melting it) when the onions go translucent or opaque in color add your blackening seasoning and brown sugar. When everything is drying up and sticking together, add your abita and a cup or so of chicken stock. Let this reduce until it thickens, you may need to add a litttle extra brown sugar or a lil white sugar for it to "glaze" for you. Once you've gotten it to reduce and start the glaze, add about 6 ounces of honey depending on how thick your mixture is. This willl round out the sauce and give it a good consistency, just whisk it in. I like this on fish and shrimp bobs, haven't really tried it on anything else. Enjoy.

Nuclear Power is the hot thing. My dad is working on the Watts Bar Project.

NoVaTiger's 6 step remedy for Football withdrawal:

1. Choose a new hobby.

2. Become obsessed with new hobby (this can continue through all succeeding steps and beyond).

3. Acquire equipment for new hobby.

4. Get trained for new hobby.

5. Plan trip to indulge in new hobby.

6. Carry out trip (along with children) to indulge in new hobby (this step is particularly important for the June/July period).

So here I sit with my living room covered by Scuba and camping gear, preparing to leave tomorrow for a week diving in the Keys and a week of hiking, fishing and rafting in the North Carolina mountains. Auburn won't cross my mind for the next 2 weeks and by the time I'm ready to think about football again, it will be almost time for fall practice to start.

Nova- I know I did. Unfortunately, everything I really enjoy costs money. Auburn Football, Duck Hunting, Golf & Disney. Duck Hunting is the cheapest by far, but you can still drop some bucks easily. Basic Open Water course runs about $450-$500. Most places expect you to have your own mask, fins, snorkle and boots (may not need the boots depending on the type of fins and the water temperature where you're training.) That'll run around $250-$300 unless you can find used. They usually supply the rest of the gear for classes. You'd need to rent it for the aquarium (tanks, weights, BCD, wet suit).

The skills may push your comfort levels. I wouldn't get into it just to dive the aquarium unless you're pretty sure you want to do more. Lots of places will do a resort course where they give you a little instruction and training and let you dive with an instructor. You might see if that can be done at the aquarium.

7:51 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Nova- I agree about not doing it just for the aquarium, but I was interested in the expenses. Sounds like it would be fun, but my fear of sharks may never make it feasible.

D.Miller- Here you go:

--Hot in Alabama. Told players to get out in it so they'd get used to it. Players told him 'you don't get used to the heat in Alabama'.
--Tiger Prowl kept Auburn in news the right way and on recruits' minds.
Coaches had fun getting to know each other in limo.
--Defended the cost of limo (pizzes me off that we have to defend that!)
--Big Cat was to build relationships with recruits & our players.
--Got a pie in his face.
--"Don't matter if you're Tuberville fans or Pat Dye fans. Put that to bed.
We're all in the same family."
--1 more Sr. camp.
--"Blessed" to have Coach Yox. Players out there "sweatin like a hostage".
--Players come by & visit about girlfriends, classes, etc.
--Will build chemistry as team when all frosh get here.
--Frenchy: no knee brace, told Pierre: 'toughest part is between your 2 ears.' Has tlaked to Frenchy's HS coach for motivational tips.
--Tommy Trott: 'In love with Trott'. Looks good, If he stays healthy, he'll cause some match-up problems.
--Needs Tim to show up. Tell him 'like a limo with no gas, look pretty but can't use you'. Tim buying in.
--Montez: healthy
--Terrell Z. & Darvin A.: most improved
--Players already focused on La Tech. watching tapes.
--"I will play everybody who deserves to play. The ones that can do it will be out there."
--Will bring in 4 receivers in upcoming class. Has 8 in an elite group & 6 of those look good to come to AU.
--Upcoming Surprises? (Here he commences to giggling alot)!!
--Promises the holiday will be enjoyable (didn't say which holiday)
--"It will BE the fireworks. Save your money & don't buy fireworks."

Good morning, Hotties! We made it to Friday!

I was so disappointed when I got home yesterday and turned on the t.v. and found out the U.S. Open was postponed until today. I hope they have good weather for the rest of the tourney.

Chris Todd? He's still around? J/k. The only reason Todd takes a snap next year is if the coaches think Kodi and Neil are complete rubbish and the plan is to hand it over to a freshman for the 2010 season.

I just read the latest on Rivals about Auburn Recruiting in general, and wow, just wow. This staff is doing an excellent job. Best job that I have seen in quite some years. The key is to start landing some of these players and it looks like Auburn is about to start doing so. Recruiting should keep us pretty entertained until football season gets here. Sit back, relax and enjoy it.

Thanks ehyou, because I wasn't hyped out of my mind listening to Trooper earlier, that whole thought of how good our offense could be has taken me over the edge. Thanks.

So, Eddie, 1 "wow" wouldn't do it justice? It needed 2 wows? I like thing that require a double wow. When 2 wows are used prior to an event, the event usually ends up getting at least 1 wow when it occurs.

I'm still cautiously optomistic, but I just haven't seen us do this type of recruiting in a long time. I believe that this could be some fun times in the next few years, provided we keep this staff intact.

I love how people think Auburn has this massive talent vaccuum. They'll say hey, look, success at Troy and Tulsa but they get to Auburn and die because there's no talent? I mean really? Franklin didn't bomb because of the talent or lack thereof but because of mismanagment of the team the execution of getting the scheme installed.

9:05 AM
Blogger michael said...

And also because of lack of talent, Sean.

eddie, i've started to notice a bit of a trend in recruiting that has become especially prevalent during this cycle. have you noticed the same or is it just me?

if AU offers a recruit, that has a previous offer from CHU (cousin humper U) the CHU offer will mysteriously disappear or become "verbal not written". many times both recruiting websites will remove confirmation of a CHU offer that has stood for possibly months. conversely, if AU offers a recruit with no CHU offer, a CHU offer either follows rather quickly if they truly are interested and have an advantage (bammer HS coach etc.) or they back off completely if it appears the recruit may actually consider the AU offer. it just seems that the competition for certain recruits is carefully orchestrated and manipulated in some cases so as not to appear to be "losing" recruits to AU. of course, this does not apply in all cases. i've mainly noticed it going on with the mid-level 3-4 star type recruits.

This could be paranoia on my part, but it seems to have happened a number of times the last few months.

9:16 AM
Blogger Monica said...

That was funny, Sean.

I would absolutely not put it past Short Stuff to manipulate the system in any minor way that would be to his advantage. Just stand up and go chest to chest with us (or chest to thigh in your case).

9:29 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Chip- I've noticed that. To my undersstanding, most people that run CHU various recruiting sites have the ability to edit each recruits offer status from their prospective school. There definitely seems to be an agenda behind all of this, and it would not surprise me in the least, if that order came from some higher power CHU(or being according to some CHU loyalist). These recruiting sites are the new tools in recruiting. The recruits love reading about themselves and others, so it all becomes a big game. That's ok that CHU keeps taking their offers away after a recruit heads to Auburn. Eventually we will be saying that I guess CHU just didn't want that so and so 5-star player, even tho there is plenty of articles to back up there interest in so and so prospect.

That was a long way of saying that I agree with you Chip.

Chip ...

Some call it paranoia, I call it being "astute."

I wouldn't be surprised if some day, an enterprising reporter unearths a "payola" scandal within a recruiting service.

Maybe I'm paranoid, too, or maybe I'm astute.

Still competing for him are the fulmer cup leaders, i,e bammer, fsu, utenn and probably uga.

Sean, I really don't consider it that the Franklin Experience bombed. It wasn't great, but the bomb was when we got rid of Franklin and gave Kodi the reins at QB. I knew we were done then.

I do think Franklin needed to go at the end of the season, but we were much better off than the offensive offense we saw after that. Kodi proved what Borges and Franklin both knew. He wasn't an SEC quality QB and made his mark in high school off of athletic ability.

As for Todd, with decent arm strength he will beat Kodi out easily. I can't really say for sure about Caudle because I haven't seen him play enough, but my guess is Todd beats him out also.

And yes, I think the coaches will be looking for Trotter, Moseley, or Rollison to be our future at QB. I expect one season of Todd and then a more longer term solution at QB. I am not convinced Rollison will be the guy. There is a good chance Moseley will be just as likely.

Playing Jax State violates two of my three basic tenets of non-conference scheduling:

1. Play one BCS conference team each year.
2. Play no FCS (I-AA) teams.
3. Play no instate team, other than Samford.

BOOOO!

I'm such a sucker. I bought the new iPhone.

It wasn't near the hassle as in the previous two years. I think the fact that they let people preorder to be delivered at home via FedEx this year helped a great deal.

First impressions. Looks exactly like last year's version. It is a good deal faster bringing up apps and things. Don't know how much I like the universal search feature..I could care less how many emails I have with the X name. It is good for sorting through a bunch of contacts though.

Voice Calling will be good for me because I am on the road alot.

I got the 32GB phone (Black, of course) because they had sold out of the 16 GB by the time I got there.

Now wiping all the junk off of my old iPhone is a pain in the Dennis Franchione.

Regarding Jax State....Heck we are playing Georgia State next year so why not?
