Taylor and Luper talk it out

Hey everyone. Auburn assistants Trooper Taylor and Curtis Luper spent some time this afternoon holding a mock press conference for a group of high-school students.

The students were allowed to ask about anything that interested them.

Some of the questions were mundane. Some were excellent.

Here is an overview of what I thought were the best pieces of information gleaned:

  • LUPER on the way this staff recruits:
``We've been unique and different. We actually used limousines. That was our way, our head coach's way, of emphasizing the state of Alabama. We had to let people know that our coaching staff is here and we'll be out and about. It's unprecedented in college football. Generally, coaches go in different directions. We wanted to saturate the state of Alabama. We accomplished our goal."

  • TAYLOR on how Auburn plans to differentiate itself from Alabama in recruiting:
``A lot of people make mistakes in thinking it's us versus Alabama. That wasn't the goal. Our goal was to keep other schools from coming into this state and taking the best players. Look at JaMarcus Russell. He left Alabama, went to LSU and they won a national championship.

Patrick White leaves and goes to West Virginia. He put them on the map.
Our responsibility is that we take care of the state of Alabama. We'll outwork them -- no matter who it is."

  • TAYLOR on the lifestyle of an Auburn assistant:
If I wear my hat backward and walk into Wal-Mart, it's going to be a three-hour trip. It should be a 30-minute trip. My kids remind me of that all the time. At most places, they don't recognize the assistants; it's just the head coach. At Auburn, it's different.

  • LUPER on changes already made to the program:
"We are developing the culture of our football team. From A to Z. What are they like when they walk across the campus? What are they like when they walk in the building? Will they take their hats off? Will they say `yes sir' and `yes ma'am'? Do they take their earrings off? Will they pull their pants up? Everything. To develop that culture adequately takes a couple years."

  • TAYLOR on the role of football in his life:
``It's been more than a career for me. My father died when I was 12 years old. The men in my life have been coaches. I knew I wanted to coach when I was 13 years old. Those men brought me into their homes, took care of me, treated me like family. The funny thing is -- most of them weren't the same color as me and none of them had the same last name as me.

All they ever asked from me was for me to do my very best."

  • TAYLOR on why he named a son Star:
``for the side of the helmet of the Dallas Cowboys."

  • TAYLOR answering this question: "What was your reaction to the recruit who called out Nick Saban during Big Cat Weekend?"

(**HABOTN point of information: Player in question is TB Lache Seastrunk.)

``He's a 17 year old kid. We're not allowed to comment on their exact names and stuff, but he's a 17-year-old kid. We had to help him and make him understand why that was such a significant deal. He doesn't know. You can't be held accountable for something that you don't know.

Our job is to teach those guys, once they get here, between right and wrong. It's happened to me before. I wouldn't not have taken it personally. I would have considered the source."

  • TAYLOR on Alabama's recent NCAA troubles:

(**HABOTN point of information: Luper urged Taylor to no comment this one. Taylor couldn't help himself.)

I should give a no comment this, but I'll tell you this: I've got to mow my own grass. I can't tell you what's happening at another school. We'll learn from this, too. Even In life, you have to learn from other people's mistakes. I don't know the scenario or situation on how it got to be what it was, but I know we'll make sure we're not in that same scenario.

Anytime something happens that may affect our players, we take Cliff's Notes. We have a team meeting and we go over it -- whether it's a player getting arrested at another school or a student who may have gotten hurt with a bad choice.

We let them know: This could easily be you."

I played around with the Palm Pre yesterday...It has potential. The WebOS is spectacular. The card view for multitasking is nice. However, I don't really like the keyboard. The edges are pretty sharp on that thing. And I am not sure I would like having all my Facebook contacts loaded onto the phone. I mean...really....how many of those folks do I WANT to talk to?

However, at least Palm is now in the game again. As someone who had three Treo's on the past, I'm happy to see it. Maybe it will keep Apple on notice.

Well, FSJ, I love the design and construction of macbook pro.

I think it's prudent to buy 'one model below' the newest one. Unless you are designing rockets, you don't need state of the art. And usually there's a significant premium for the latest.

True. And you can get some pretty good deals on Apple's website in the refurb section.

No, I wanted the UCLA game...just no desire to see us play Jax State.

However Jax State is better Ga State, UTC, Tn Martin, TN Tech and others just because they should bring an ok crowd in comparison.

just back from state archives and I read Jax State on our schedule??? Arrgghhhh. That's horrible. To quote a former work partner who didn't like a particular idea, "I'm violently opposed to that."

Jax State doesn't bother me. It really depends upon what the entire schedule looks like. I do think it smart that they are keeping the bucks in state.

Okay, it is Friday, so everyone kick back and watch Meerkat Manor. Yea, somehow it reminds me of last season.

If you've got to play another in-state school, play one of the 1-A schools.

2:45 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I don't like playing the in-state schools. The embarrassment of last season's performance against UT-Martin would be multiplied against Jax State. It's just bad for business. Broken record time: Play one BCS team and three games you can win 90-95 percent of the time that aren't I-AA teams, if humanly possible.

2:53 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I agree Jet, that's why I'm wondering whether or not JJ has talked to Boise State. We play at Clemson in 2011 and need another home non-conf game that year. BSU is looking for away games without demanding a return visit. The higher cost of paying a BSU vs UT-Martin could likely be made up or significantly offset by TV revenue that you don't get for the real crappy games.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

does anyone know if the chick fil a kickoff classic has contracted with ACC & SEC? Or are other teams eligible? I think AU vs ND in 2014 would be great.

3:00 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

You need some cream puffs on the schedule to rest starters and give other players who would not normally get in a chance to get some experience. I don't mind a couple of these a year.

3:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I thought the Chicken bowl was tied into both the SEC and ACC, but I could be wrong. They could have the option to choose someone else.

3:03 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Did Saban really say they should have been Utah by a couple of touchdowns? I can't believe a head coach would say something like that. If they should have and didn't. the blame goes squarely on the head coach, not assistants or player or even the fans.

3:04 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

THT- it must not be just ACC/SEC because we were offered the UCLA game, which we turned down. That's like me turning down a million bucks and all I have to do is play a round of golf

3:06 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

Chicken kick-off classic is different from chicken bowl.

chicken bowl is still ACC-SEC. Kickoff Classic is just a high profile game to start the season.

Oklahoma schedule
In addition to Texas and the rest of their conference schedule, in 2010-2017 Oklahoma has home/away series with:
Florida State
Notre Dame
Tennessee
Ohio State

Also playing at TCU and playing Tulsa a bunch during that period. That's Tulsa, not the Jax State equivalent East Central University Tigers.

currently no teams slated for 2010 or 2011 CFAKC.

2012 will feature Tenn vs NC State (ooh, ahh).

AU would not break contract against Arky State in 2010 to play in CFAKC. I certainly hope the payout for the Arky St game is HUMONGOUSLY enough to offset the TV revenue & national exposure we would have received and the bad press we did receive.

Get over the angst about UCLA, THT!

The negative press is so three months ago. It lasted about two days (except in this neighborhood) and since then we've had Tiger Prowl, Big Cat Weekend, and in the running for the top 3 RBs in the nation.

We're playing Clemson that year. No need to add on another BCS game. If we add UCLA, our sked would have opened UCLA, Clemson, at State and South Carolina. Later a four-week stretch of at Kentucky, Arkansas, LSU and at Ole Miss. Of course, the usual two-game finish.

So we have one less game on national TV. It's not the end of the world.

FSU non-conf schedules

2010 BYU, Oklahoma, Samford, Florida

2011 Air Force, Oklahoma, Florida, ?

2012 West Virginia, Air Force, USF, Florida

3:34 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Jet, give me a break. I didn't have any angst back then. My angst just caught up with me.

3:35 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

FSU also plays Jax State. I know we've got a much easier OOC schedule, but everyone schedules some easier stuff

3:40 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

"UCLA, Clemson, at State and South Carolina. Later a four-week stretch of at Kentucky, Arkansas, LSU and at Ole Miss. "

So we have one top level team (LSU), a bunch of middle of the pack schools and two traditionally lower level SEC schools (KY & State).

Playing a mid level Pac 10 school like UCLA shouldn't make or break that early season stretch if we are near or on our game. If we aren't, it doesn't matter anyway once we play Clemson and the SEC schools.

Not that it matters, I just wish we would have scheduled the UCLA game. They are an average team with a highly bloated reputation.

3:42 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

well, they should be!

3:45 PM
Blogger Jet said...

RK,

Here's how I look at it: Where are those 8 teams likely to be in 2010?

Clemson will be solid.
State will likely better than they've been.
So. Carolina, hard to tell.
Kentucky, probably retreating.
Arkansas, improving (I believe Petrino will make them very good)
LSU, a top program
Ole Miss, getting better in a hurry.

Where are we? I don't have an earthy idea.

Ego is a wonderful thing, but it makes a bad schedule maker.

I've debated with folks before about this ... I'll stop. Y'all are probably tired of hearing it.

3:46 PM

SteveFC - I agree with your assessment. What a 'tard!

3:50 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Tommyd,

I bet some Texas fans (season ticket holders and others) are complaining...we just don't see it because we don't follow Texas that closely.

Like I said, it's no big deal, but I'd rather us play UCLA...maybe it's ego, maybe it's just wanting to see a better match up.

I think win or lose that game would do more for us than beating up on a lower level school.

3:50 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

THT, I'm more of a Coke Zero guy.

3:51 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Jet - I don't want them playing OU, USC, ND, Ohio State every week, but more Arizonas, Oklahoma States, Iowa States, Indianas, Troys, etc would be infinitely better than UT-Martin, Chatt, Jax State, etc

3:52 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Well I'm not going to worry about the schedule too much until the team actually does a full season under the new staff (back to my cautious optimism) But I have a feeling if that scheduling holds them back in national rankings because of SOS issues, there will be some efforts to change that schedule. Atleast I hope so. And yeah I think we should play UCLA just so we can beat the PAC-10.
