Days to kickoff: 8

Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute is brought to you by the number:

8

HAPPY CALVIN JACKSON DAY!!!

Calvin Jackson, a native of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., was a standout cornerback for Auburn 1992 and 1993. He was named All-SEC during his final season.

No Hottie will ever forget his 96-yard, momentum-changing interception return against the Gators in 1993. What would have been a 17-0 deficit became a much more manageable 10-7 deficit and lit the fire the Tigers needed to torch the Gators 38-35.

That game was serious excitement. So what did the PICK SIX look like from my seat? I have no idea. Disgusted at the thought of the Gators scoring yet again, I went to get THTJr the hot dog he had requested much earlier. The deafening roar that arose left little doubt what had happened.

When I returned with the dogs & drinks, my next major decision: Do I sit and watch the game or do I go back to the concourse so Auburn can score again? Thankfully, my position had no bearing on the outcome and I was able to watch one of the most thrilling victories ever at Jordan-Hare.

Mr. Jackson's return is the second-longest in school history. The longest was in Digger's and IV's childhood days when John Liptak had a 98-yard INT return against Georgia.

HONORABLE MENTION:

* Cooper Wallace: Nashville, Tenn.; TE 2002-05.

* Shayne Wasden: Selma, Ala.; WR 1988-90; ACADEMIC ALL-SEC in 1990.

* Stanford Simmons: Ashland, Ala.; FS 1999-01.

* Jerry Beasley: Montgomery, Ala.; CB 1977-80; yes, Terry's brother.

* Chris Knapp: Americus, Ga.; PK 1985-87; leading scorer in 1986; ranks 6th in career PAT pct (62/63).

* Jerraud "Jerrard" Powers: Decatur, Ala., CB 2005-08. Very good player.

In case any of you were wondering, I spelled Wasdin's first name wrong on purpose. I cannot spell Shane that way. I'm a purist when it comes to names.

10:28 AM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Thanks for the Calvin Jackson vid! I remember that play vividly. I had been out of school for 4 years, but AU hadn't changed the student IDs, so I was able to wrangle and use a student ticket. For various reasons, it took me a while to get into the student section and to find a seat. I was just settling into my seat when it looked like we were about to go down 17-0. I was just starting to get pissed about the beating we were going to take when that INT turned things into a game, and a great game at that! Fun times!

10:32 AM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Shesaid - is that why you spelled his last name wrong, too? ;)

shesaid- you coming to town next weekend?

10:36 AM
Blogger shesaid said...

No, Scott Chocolate. I'm just retarded.

Kristina, the nuptual plans are up in the air right now. Depending on how the season goes, we may just elope. On the moon. Or we may be getting married on the field after the Iron Bowl. Who knows at this point.

10:36 AM
Blogger shesaid said...

Yes, Harrison, I will be there with bells on. Just hope the tailgate spot is secured Friday 4PM.

10:37 AM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Shesaid - sorry, couldn't resist!

10:39 AM

Hmm...the moon or the iron bowl. Tough choice.

Welcome back, btw.

10:39 AM

We have that taken care of. It will be a real tailgate this year, with Harrison's involvement. TV, food, everything

Looks like we need to bring John Lovett back so we can have that Rover position back. If anyone remembers Lovett had a guy who was a hybrid safety/LB. The role was filled by Kenny Kelly then Karlos Dansby.

wasn't Stanfor Simmons number 8? he played that "rover" too. he was a big bust

10:43 AM

It was appropriate that Stanford Simmons wore No. 8.

It was equivalent to the number of signing classes of which he was a member.

10:44 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

THT enjoyed your hard work as usual.
John Liptak was before my time as a fan or Alum
But the interception return of 98 yards happened in the 1947 Georgia game in Columbus Ga. In a brutal defeat for our Tigers 28-6.

11:16 AM
Blogger Monica said...

Scottie - If you haven't already you should check into printing your own giclee prints of your art. It's become MUCH less expensive. As a matter of fact there is a lady that lives near you I think who has the whole set up at her house and I bet she'd be willing to talk to you about how to do it and the cost of doing it yourself versus having a printer do it.

11:18 AM

This is the closest in cheesiness level to Burrhead/Super Burrhead that I can find.

Sellin' it

Burrhead's catch-phrase, was "Good credik, bad credik, no credik at all, come on down to A&M Furniture Mart." It was on all the time when I was at AU. Too bad he's not a little younger. He might have made a good linebacker for AU. He was a "pro" wrestler in the early 70's.

Burrhead Jones was as much a part of the Gump as was Jim Fyffe doing YMCA Pee Wee football games on WCOV at the field by their studio. Little known fact: a frequent poster on HABOTN clanked a sure TD pass of his hands on television with Fyffe at the microphone.

And I'll nevah forget Ronald Swanner and the Bekins Van Lines Moving All-Stars featuring Eugene Travis, Sr., Eugene Travis, Jr., and the immortal "Popcorn" Carter.

Fortunately, he located a guy willing to share his friendship with his buddy Jack Daniels! War Damn Eagle!

There are a surprisingly large amount of milk chocolate fans out there, Jet. I'm not even kidding.

He and all the guys who played under Coach Bobby Wasdin were great repersentives of the football program.

Shane was the WR that caught the TD against Florida to beat them 10-7. It was the year Emmitt Smith was at UF. I forget the year because I was young at the time.

I'm going to guess that Billings didn't take enough hours over the spring and summer to qualify. You have to have a certain amount of hours taken to be eligible to play.

1:24 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

if you graduated in the spring semester, would you have to take summer classes to be eligible for the fall? that doesn't make sense. what's the rule?

1:31 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The situation could be he only needed 3 hours to graduate in the spring, but he needed to take 9 to maintain eligibility. He took the 3 he needed to graduate, but not the 9 overall to stay eligible.

The sad thing is the football team has people who are supposed to advise on this.

Graduate or not, you still have to be a student and taking a certain amount of hours per semester to play.

1:42 PM
Blogger michael said...

Hey gang. What's cookin?

1:43 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

As of a couple of years ago, you had to pass 6 hours in the sememster that the sport you play is going on. So it wasn't a whole lot for the semester you are active in your sport.

However I'm not sure what it is for the semesters your sport isn't active.

JG, if there is a rule that says a player must pass X amount of hours to become eligible then it makes sense. say Montez only needed 3 hours to graduate so that's all he took, but according to his playing eligibility he needed to pass 6 or 9 and he didn't.

does that make sense? i have no clue what the rule is. i'm just trying to talk it out.

Hola Hotties - home again, home again, jiggity-jig. A red-eye flight home where I slept decently followed shortly after arriving home with a nice nap with my future 4* son. Not too shabby.

FSJ - done, done and done.

THT - nice memory and video. I was there for that one too. Actually, I've never seen AU lose to UF at home in person.

Jet - I remember watching those games on tv too. I think I even remember your play and calling you a loser. No, wait, it wasn't until several years later when I called you a loser.

Burrhead Jones, Ronald Swanner, Popcorn Carter, The James Store, all cheesy commercials which bring back fond childhood memories.

Now that I'm home, I got to see the video. I am SO ready for some Auburn football!!!

Next week at this time, I will still be waiting to mark off our tailgating spot.

I'll be waiting with you! Well, not WITH you, but there, too.

Monica,
Loved the comment about growing your own cotton and weaving your own t-shirt. So clever with your comments!

2:51 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

j-z, are you miming porn again?

2:51 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

This picture is one of the loves of my life, and now she is 24!

I think this is going to be 4 comments in a row and Jet said something about that sometime...

I hope we don't have any problem getting the same spot this season. We've been tailgating at the same spot going on 3 (maybe it's 4) years now. It's never been a problem, but with the school taking away more and more areas, I'm afraid it will be more difficult.

2:53 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

SC,
Thanks, you kept me from being 4 in a row. Can I come by on Tuesday for some Auburn chocolate? Got any left?

2:53 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Luv,
Where do you tailgate?

2:53 PM
Blogger j-z said...

Am I ever not miming porn?

2:54 PM

Cincy, at the corner of Thach and Hemlock.

2:54 PM

j-z, I wish I could see a demonstration of that!

Before that, we tailgated next to Sewell Hall, but we got booted from there. It was a prime location too.

2:56 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

i used to tailgate in the ampitheatre back before 9/11. it was my prime spot. i walked through last year and it had been transformed into a greek drunk-fest. it made me a little sad. we had some good times in that circle.

2:58 PM
Blogger j-z said...

Do you now? Hubba Hubba.

2:59 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Luv ...

You think you do, but you don't. Trust me, you don't.

2:59 PM

We had some friends that used to tailgate there too years ago, Scottie. That was a great spot.

2:59 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

We used to tailgate at the amphitheater when the kids were little and you could park right there.

LOL, Jet. I just can't quite get the visual of what "mime porn" would look like.

3:01 PM

Blogger j-z said...

For $4.99 a minute, you could.

3:01 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

I worked at facilities maintenance. It's at the corner of Thatch & Hemlock.

3:03 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

For $4.99 I'd rather buy a large butterfinger blizzard and have leftover money.

3:03 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

You guys can call my mime porn hotline and listen to it

3:04 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Ok, trying to place Thatch and & Hemlock. Got the Thatch part, where is Hemlock?

3:04 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Cincy, glad I was able to save you from the 4 posts in a row. Sorry it was with such a lame comment! We do still have some AU chocs available.

3:04 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

I mean Thach.

3:04 PM
Blogger j-z said...

So you've seen mime porn. Good choice.

3:05 PM

The one and only time i've ever seen Rocky Horror Picture Show it was at the amphitheater.

Reese's peanut cup for me!

ehyou, we're across the street from some frat house that is in a serious state of disrepair. They've had a remodeling project sign in the yard for as long as we've been tailgating there.

Cincy...
Thatch & Hemlock is right between old and new CDV.

3:06 PM

Is old CDV still there? Those apartments were barely standing 10+ years ago.

3:10 PM

Cincy, it doesn't really matter.
