Players speak, 10/25

Hey everyone. We were given access to a slightly unusual array of players ... including Neil Caudle, the injured Onterio McCalebb and Antonio Coleman.

Here's an overview:

  • Auburn didn't practice today, which is unusual. They attended film study and held a team meeting. I believe there also was a players-only meeting as well, but players weren't talking much about that.

  • Antonio Coleman on not practicing: ``It was a good thing in the sense that we watched film, sat down and saw all the mistakes we made and how the correct those. We had a lot of time and need to watch film."

  • Still, I didn't get the sense Coleman was thrilled to have been held off the practice field. ``We're beat up. We're banged up defensively. We don't have that much depth. Today helped us and tomorrow is going to help us. I would have been fine practicing today -- even with a banged-up knee. I don't care. That's the type of guy I am. That's how our whole defense feels. We have to go out and get better."

  • Defensive coordinator Ted Roof presented this nugget: LSU had five "big plays" worth an average of 32 yards per play ... and averaged three yards per play on the other 61 snaps.

  • Roof on that trend: ``It came back to big plays. Long runs. Couple of the pass plays where we were in good position but just didn't make the play on the ball. It was big plays."

  • Chris Todd said he's still trying to get better: ``Anytime things happen, as a quarterback, you have to take that on your shoulders and take some blame when things are going bad. When things are good you get some credit for some stuff, and when things are bad, you take that too. But I'm definitely working myself and trying to improve things that will help us move on and win some ballgames."

  • Onterio McCalebb said he's OK running to his right ... but the left is a little tougher: ``I can still run on my ankle, it feels good, it's just like when I'm running to the left it kind of hurts a little bit. I can cut. When I run to the right side I'm all good. It's just when I run to the left and try to get to the corner it slows me down. I just put my leg up a little bit and try to get rolling."

  • Neil Caudle is getting caught up in the possible quarterback quandary: ``We’re handling it the right way. We believe in Chris. We believe he’s a good player. He’s showed that numerous times. Things aren’t clicking on offense right now but we’re going to get it fixed and we know Chris is going to do a good job for us."

I'll bite. They need the rest. They need to get their legs under them. The coaches need extra film time.

I'll throw this out ... maybe we're gettng the curve ball on Caudle. What if he goes out this week and has the worst week of practice ever and you've committed publicly to him on Sunday? Coaches can change their minds.

What will surprise me is that if he doesn't get significant playing time early at the first hint of Todd troubles on Saturday.

I guess most of all I'm disappointed that so many are turning so quickly against the coaching staff. Not as much here as other places, but the seeds are here, too.

I was a big Tuberville critic, but he had 10 years on the job. We're not even 10 weeks into the season. A month ago, these guys were geniuses.

From what I have heard, Neil is a team player. He'll toe the company line, because that's what team players do.

BTW, last night's loss effectively eliminated us from the SEC West race, even if we were to win out. There may be some outrageous five-way tie scenario which would put us in the title game, but I can't figure it out.

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Jet,

I'm cool with the coaching staff (well maybe not Boulware) except for I disagree with the decision to stay with Todd at this point.

You are probably right that rest might be better for this team than to run into each other for another two hours, but I'm from the mindset that if you had a bad game it's best to get out there and work on making things better.

I'm with you Jet 100%. I'm very unhappy with these past three games, but I'm way more dissapointed with so many of our fellow fans.

Second-guessing is part of it, but I'm very surprised with so many going off the deep end. I defended Tubs for quite a while, but there were cracks in the program as well as his ability for a long, long time.

It was time for a change. The results aren't good right now, but there have been plenty of good signs from this staff from the day they arrived.

I'm sure a lot of this teeth gnashing will subside on signing day.

Brother Jet
I wholeheartedly agree with you. Why is everyone ready to throw in the towel because we've struggled (whatever the reason), and because Iowa State won a game? Who cares about Iowa State and xCPR.

I also think that creating our own "bye week" here and there is not a bad thing. Couple that with what I'm sure was a long night of travel, etc- it might not be bad to watch some film and take some mental reps. Banging into each other for fall camp plus 8 weeks hasn't made us better tacklers on D, or better at moving the ball the last few weeks- -so what would it serve.

Lastly, as for Caudle. Agree he's a team player (and marvel at that after all he's been through). And I predict there will be a quick hook during the Ole Miss game if things look shaky.

Blogger ADP said...

I guess I'm one of the ones turning on the coaches. Although I wouldn't call it that. But after three consecutive weeks of seeing a team that looks very unprepared, I don't know who else to blame. If I am a coach, and a kid doesn't know what to do, it's because I haven't done my job well enough. I would blame myself at that point and expect others to blame me as well. I do still think we have a great coaching staff. I had just hoped they would not have to endure this kind of learning curve.

It's not the losses that bother me. It"s the ineptitude we have shown in those losses. We have about 28 penalties in the last three games. For some teams, that's a season's worth.

I think we can still win some ballgames, but I think the problem has to be fixed from the top down. Hopefully they can and will. The defense played good enough to win last night. They did what they were asked to do. The offense fell flat on it's face for the third week in a row. When something becomes a trend, I have to look to the coach.

10:28 PM
Blogger WDEwg said...

Oh, one more thing. I know we couldn't do this- -but back to my point of creating a bye week where the schedule doesn't technically have one.

I would think that we could take a day before Ole Miss, and then 2 or so for Furman. Yes, I think we can roll out our Arkansas/Kentucky effort and beat a middle of the pack SoCon team- -giving us some legs for UGA, before our actual by week happens.

Scottie- -I'm with you. I've been real disappointed with the cliff jumpers. I'd like to see what a change at QB brings, but I do overall still like the way the program is trending on a full scale look (as opposed to only looking at the last 3 games).

10:29 PM
Blogger WDEwg said...

Phred
Do you think Todd is physically not able to perform? Is there anything to the thought that he tweaked something against UT- and hasn't acknowledged it?

Or, is it that Caudle is so unimpressive to the coaches that they think a 75% Todd is better than 100% Caudle?

Or, maybe you think that its only partially the players and more the fact that defenses have caught up to Malzahn, and he hasn't adjusted.

Josh Moon summed it up in his column today:

It is painfully obvious that this staff is unable to solve any of this and that they've just started accepting it and trying to limit the damage. That has to really burn if you're an Auburn fan, because at this time last year, no matter how bad things were, you at least had a coach with the experience and the aptitude to solve football problems.

Morning Gang. Hang in there, the team is trying to as well. Re Iowa State - do you think that Chiz's kids are finally reaching their peak as was his plan lat year? Hmm, perhaps he does know how to coach. Re Josh Moon summation - the offensive scheme last year with the RFYLK plan, is better than what we have now? Atl east we have a coach that is going to figure something out. Our defense is beat up. We just got to hope there are fewer big plays this week. Ok so the penalties are a mental thing and THAT should not be happening. Their confidence is down, things are not going as smooth as the first of the year, I hope that the whole group coaches and players, are learning something from this, can get it figured out, and get better from it.

Good Monday Morning Hotties! Got in late last night from Baton Rouge. Although the outcome was lousy, I had a very nice trip and met a lot of nice folks. Stayed at the same hotel as Auburn. Met a lot of the Auburn family. Since I left for the game before the team boarded, I really wasn't sure if they ever got on the bus! I have to note, Gus was out walking after their team meeting. We gave him a shout out and he signed a helmet for some young kid, but Coach was walking double time out there.

Met Ashton Richardson's family. His cousin played for La Tech and was talking about how Auburn whipped them good when he played there. He really likes Auburn and this staff; although he said it would be tough recruiting against Sa$an. He did concede that Saban had the state of Louisiana to himself and the situation is a lot different now.

If the coaches are planning a QB change, do you really think they would announce it to us, or Ole Miss, on Sunday? I gave Tommy 10 years. I'll give this coaching staff more than a few months to right this ship.

War Eagle! It's ALWAYS GREAT to be an AUBURN TIGER!!!

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I know this team does not have players. I get this. For that is why I continue to say FU Tuberville! I am very upbeat on the players that they are recruiting and the commitments they have. That is a step in the right direction. It is going to take 2-3 more of those classes to really take this team up to championship contender status. As far as coaching. That has been a roller coaster ride. You would like to see improvement as the season goes along and we just don't seem to be showing any. Is that players??? Maybe. I'm hoping it is.

7:14 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

It's a horrible combinantion of lack of depth on D, stupid penalties, teams adjusting to our offense and bad QB play, tackling & special teams that is doing us in.

I suspect the biggest problem right now and probably the hardest to overcome is the mental part of it. It is not surprising, after last year particularly, that confidence has hit the skids. For the players that were on the team last year it probably feels like deja vu all over again.

We probably all should take a breath and remember that this is football--not a state, regional, or national crisis.

Blogger cincytiger said...

Chizik said something in last week's Auburn Tigers Everyday show. "Don't let circumstances change your character." I think that is good advice for them and for us.

These coaches were brilliant the first 5 games of the season, and now many think they can't coach their way out of a box. We were expecting a rough year. The worst thing they did was win the first 5 games. Everyone needs to just settle down and give them some time. I truly believe we will be happy with the results if we do, and I don't have on my orange and blue glasses saying that.

Mad props to Kodi Burns who has now sacrificed teeth for the greater good of the football team.

That's guts no matter what.

These guys play their guts out and it just isn't good enough to get them wins. But having the guts to keep fighting is admirable and will serve them well the rest of their lives. There's a nobility in fighting through adversity.

Does it hurt me? No. Football is a game. Life is life.

Do I wish Auburn would win more or lose better? Sure, but I get why it isn't happening now.

I think the idea Moon was hitting on the frustration many fans feel now. I don't necessarily agree with all of his notions, but he captures what some people have told him or what he's read here. (Yes, he reads the comments.) Moon jumps from ship to ship in his writing. It's his thing. He's good at what he does.

Two Things:

1. This bunch needed a day off. I love AC and all, but to me it came off as someone running his mouth a little.

2. Honestly there is not alot to play for right now. If Todd struggles why not see what Caudle can do. Why not see what Blake, Lutz, and Benton can do? It is too late to pull redshirts. It is too late, and it would be a waste. Let Nosa, Tyrik, a couple of those lineman have this year to get better and stronger.

I agree with Jet. 8 games in on a first year coaching staff and fans are pre-teening and pubescing all over their keyboards. Grow up, Auburn fans.

Dye won five his first year. So did Tuberville. It looks like Chizik will go down in AU history as having won 6.

If Todd is the best option, then we obviously don't have the players we need for this system, save Tate. Give the coaches time to recruit and see what they do with their players.

Morning Hotties - I've tried to read a bit from the last couple of threads and I see a good bit of discontent. We all knew (or should have) that we didn't have a great team this year. The team came out looking strong and apparently we began to expect more than we should have. I'll liken it to my own situation - I went to bed Monday night able to see just fine out of both eyes, by lunch time Tuesday I had zero vision in one eye. I'm doing what needs to be done about it by having surgery today. I'm also not complaining about it. I think the coaches are doing the best they can with the cards they've been dealt. They all know more about football than I do so I'm trusting their judgement. I choose to look at it like this - the current situation should solidify AU in the minds of the current recruits and maybe even sway some others who haven't committed that AU needs them now.

I don't like what I've seen the last 3 games anymore than you do, but it's about what I expected from a W-L perspective. I for one am not giving up on this staff yet and I hope you don't either.

Even if I only have one good (well, 'good' may be a stretch) eye for all the rest of my days, I'll still Keep Hate Alive and I'll still be an AU fan.

With that, I'll leave you now to get ready to leave for the hospital for surgery. I don't know when I'll be able to return, but I'll be back in one form or another.

Peace out and WAR EAGLE!

I don't understand all the throwing under the bus of the coaching staff..

Does anybody understand that we're paying the price for Tubby quitting on the job? As Eddie's link above says, we are, in effect, at the same place as a team that was on MAJOR probation for 3 years would be--down 15 scholarship players. THAT'S A HUGE DEAL!

What would 3 more LBs, 2 more OL, 2 more DL, 2 more QBs, 4 more DBs, and 2 athletes for ST do for this team? The answer is a lot. Sure, those 15 guys may not have been 5 star recruits, but you've got to think that atleast a small handful of them could be Darren Bates types--low rung guys that play way above their ranking.

I firmly believe the QB position is 50% of the problem. We haven't had a really good, game managing QB since Jason Campbell in 04. I'm not talking a Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy level guy. I'm just talking about a guy that doesn't give away a few games a year (that takes Brandon Cox out of the running).

How can we blame any of the coaches?

Chizik? Do you think anyone else could do better with what he has had to work with? Absolutely not...heck, a lesser person could've easily lost to UT and WVU.

How would 3-5 sound right now?

Trooper Taylor, Chiz, Malzahn, and co. are "doing what they do" right now. They're out working their butts off to try and get the players they need to trot out the type of team they envision. Do we have those guys right now? Heck no.

Do you really think Malzahn loves having Kodi Burns be his Wildcat option? Do you think he is enamored with the idea of having to rely on Chris Todd as his game manager on the field? Do you think Ted Roof is able to run his defense with 16 semi-healthy, dressed out players available?

If you can answer yes to the above questions, then go ahead and blame it on the coaches. I, for one, know that the answer to each and every one is an astounding NO.

I know everyone points the finger at Roof right now...have you heard his few interviews? He insists that he doesn't have the personnel to run "his" defense. He has game tape of past defenses he has coached to back this up. For one, he's a corner blitz guy. Can he do that with this team? Heck no.

I could go on an on, but there's no need. Give this staff a year or two, then draw judgments. If Malzahn gets "his" signal caller (Rollison), "his" RB (Dyer), and the rest of "his" offense on the field and still under performs, call for his lynching if you will. Give Roof the same respect.

Now, let's go beat Ole Piss!

WDE!

I expect that if he continues to coach'em up that way, he will have a fine team that will be very competitive in this league.

Mark I think if UT had an offense they'd be dangerous. I wonder if he could get his Dad to coach them up, too.

Not much to say this AM and doubt if anyone cares.
Looks like a rough ride from here on out but we need to stay with the team and coaches.

Lay off the refs people.

They are thin this year - especially after the crew was "publically hung" by the SEC commish.

They are trying. The game moves fast and many of them are trying to catch up to the speed of it. The head man in charge of them has a plan and they are learning how to execute it.

I have never seen it so one sided. It appears the teams with the higher ranking are going to get the calls. If you notice in our games we are getting a 2 to 1 penalty call. I mean 10 penalties against KY and they had none. Come on now. And they are all judgement calls. How many PIs have we had this year? Seems fishy to me. I am not one for black helicopters but AL, LSU and FLA seem to have a lot of help from the Zebras.

The officiating has been horrible this year.

The refs stink.

It's all a conspiracy.

Eddie...you're no longer cursing....that's an improvement. Thank you....I'd much rather you spew at me than the team/coaches that are only 8 games into a new program.

Ole Miss is only a 3 point fav? Vegas continues to miss the point that at this time of the year SEC teams get tired ....and AU is a tired team.

Moon is a drama queen that is always throwing spin. It seems to be the only way he can draw attention to himself. AU didn't quit ..they are worn out...just like the UGA game in 07.

Bama looked sloppy, slow, unimaginative and tired against a rested UT team. I thought that Bama would be deep enough to overcome fatigue and win easily. Watch what happens when they come back from the week off. I realize this concept is so simple that folks fancying themselves as analysts just can't accept it, but it proves true way more often than not in the SEC.

11:18 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

That open date does have to move up further in the season. Since we went to 12 games full time it's always been too late.

11:23 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Even Chizik has said he wants the week off in the middle of the season. It does matter.

I just hope with the extra week before the IB this year, our coaches put together more of a gameplan than last year's bunch did. That was a white flag waving if I ever say one.

11:23 AM
Blogger Ephemeral said...

I saw Trott smile when he congratulated Caudel after the touchdown.

For what it's worth (which isn't much), Auburn had one more touchdown than Bama on Saturday.

11:25 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I know they wanted to preserve the UGA and Bama games being the last two games of the year, but put a cupcake between them and move the open date into October.

Had to put my shot glass avatar back up. Watching the last 3 games has required some drinking. I didn't really expect AU to beat LSU, but sure thought we'd at least show up. Still, I didn't lose sleep over it like I did the UK game. I'm still upset over that one. It might have been the difference between a decent bowl trip and a crappy one.

Hoopie- I will say what the heck I want to say when I say it. I've been on a 3-8 and 5-6 Auburn team. I've lived unlike some. What I say is directed at the coaches and if you read all my comments instead of the selective reading you actually do on this blog because of your high and mighty real work instead of all us loser redneck types who just get by life scraping at the bottom of the barrel. Am i pissed that the Tigers didn't compete? Absolutely. I know we mailed it in at times in 98, but 99 team had way more fight in it than this bunch, it just didn't have the extra chance to get to 6-6. I've loudly critized Tuberville for this predictiment and will continue to do so, even to my brother's dismay. It's funny that you endorse the Cow College shirt and then call someone redneck. It's irony I guess. Like I said before, please don't take any of your time to listen to the show or read my comments with your busy schedule. Just make sure you fly in and out of here quickly making arrogant smart ass remarkeds to other posters. War Eagle!

PS- Feel free to let me have it again in about 4 hours when you check back in.

Eddie, in your opinion, was the coaching better in '99 or is it better this year?

11:54 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

i'm not sure Scott C. Say what you want, but the talent level in 99 was better than this year. Bowden actually left the program in better shape IMO. Tuberville got to Atlanta in 00 by really only adding a quality RB. This staff is in position to land 2 real big quality RB's....and that gives us still no shot to get to Atlanta next year in all reality. I've been brutally honest. I believe that Tubs ran this thing into the ground and then some. I don't care about the wins and losses. I hate being embarrased. I'll be at every game except Ole Miss from here on out. I just asked to not get embarrased. Is that too much? I don't think so, but apparently it may be.

Chizik's success at AU is yet to be determined. I think he will do well, but it will depend on two things: staff (coordinators and position coaches) and recruiting.

The truth is the first year doesn't indicate how good a coach will be, because he isn't coaching his recruits. This is true across college football. Many of the best first year coaches later fizzle and some of the worst first year coaches later thrive.

Tuberville was a mediocre coach who lived and died by his coordinators. Dye was a much better coach in my book. They both lost 5 year one.

My biggest concern is the way we are losing now. We have regressed. Whether it is depth or talent or coaching, we have taken a few steps backward.

Will Malzahn's offense work in the SEC? Will Boulware suddenly figure out how to coach special teams? Will Roof put together a SEC caliber defense? Will Chizik learn some new cliches when answering reporters? I have yet to meet a single person who knows.

12:50 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Well said Gulfshores!

This staff will bring talent in. I believe that. Let's see what they do when the talent gets here. I think we will be fine in the long run, but like you said, a little progression instead of regression would be nice.

I don't come here that often; but, it seems there is some hate directed around.

Understandable with the results.

Auburn has been on a tremendous ride the last decade. CTT probably stayed a year longer than he should have.

I am very impressed with CGC. I am a BAma fan; but, he seems like a great coach and a tremendous person.

It may not go well this year. It may take 2 or 3 years to get quality numbers back.

Auburn has been too good in the past to stay that way.
