Lee Ziemba speaks out

Hey everyone. Offensive tackle Lee Ziemba stopped by for a chat moments ago. The interview took a turn for the terse when I asked about his penchant for penalties. His answers are blunt, revealing and important.

  • On his problem with penalties in 2009: ``I didn't think they were as bad as everybody makes it seem. Watch an NFL game. How many false starts do you see? Yeah, I messed up a few times. There's a lot of factors. It's a tough thing, but we're trying to get it fixed and corrected so it doesn't happen again. It's the game of football. It's a lot tougher than people think it is. It's not easy by any stretch of the imagination."

  • On if the penalty situation is overstated: ``Heck yeah. I hear it going to have supper with my girlfriend. Somebody stops me. It's ridiculous. Whatever. You get in this position, you're going to hear stuff like that. We're trying to get it fixed. I'm always trying to improve. I come here every day and work my tail end off to try and improve myself. That's my job."

  • On if he feels underappreciated: ``I'm not doing it for appreciation. I'm doing it because I love playing football and I love Auburn University. I'm not doing it for anything other than that. I don't feel underappreciated. I feel good. I love being here. I wouldn't change anything about it. Yeah, I need to work on penalties. I have to work on a lot of different aspects of my game that people don't mention. It's not like I'm trying to mess up."

Yikes!!! Lee Ziemba is a bad man. Jay G., he has been known to rip the heads off defensive ends. Better stay out of arms reach. I wouldn't want our favorite beat reporter to get Ziembaed.

To be fair, I think Ziemba did better last year than in 2008, and last season his penalties seemed to go down as the season progressed.

4. West Ham (53)
5. Leicester (46)

I have been trying to get a feel for this QB competition, but am getting very frustrated. So far the biggest knocks I have heard about Newton is that he isn't going through his receiver progressions and isn't following through on his fakes. That not going through the progressions will get you benched, no matter how good you can run.

I am really hoping that we see the QB race narrowed down a bit soon. I don't believe having 4 quality QBs is a good problem to have.

I'm sure I'm the only one watching the TB-Bal game but just had a HORRIBLE call. The batter clearly held up on a 3-2 pitch. So he started to take his base and the man on 1st trotted to 2nd. The ump made a late call that he went and rung him up. So the catcher throws the man on 1st out at 2nd when he is taking his base.

Not sure if that made sense but it was a crazy/crappy situation.

just got back from the baseball game. Some notes from it: Mummey still looked good, other than trying for a double that wasn't close to being one. Justin Bryant left the game in the second(I think) after being hit (apparently in the face) by a pitch. He was replaced at short by Mitchell Self which begs the question where was C-Mac? We started Luckie who threw 16 pitches and then used quite a few pitchers(Slade, some young guy, Blatt, and Hurst). I'm guessing that means Jacobs will start friday but the fact that Luckie only threw 16 means he's ready to relieve that night if things go south.

As for Ziemba, his false start against UAT was a blessing from above, as it saved us from a UAT INT return for a TD.

For those of us who might have played OL in high school, it's a tad more intricate now than looking to see if you're blocking the guy in the gap inside of you, in front of you or the linebacker.

He's got a high motor. That's what we ask of him. At left tackle, he's got their best across from him and every millisecond matters.

I'm going to do my best to bite my tongue this fall should he false start.

9:31 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Very interesting about Corey Luckie. I expected Slade to start. Corey's had a very bad last couple of games, though, so maybe this is best. He's got the stuff, but just isn't bringing it right now.

I'm not gonna jump on Ziemba too much, but his excuse that "everybody does it" seemed...well...kind of lame.

You do see a lot of false starts, but not usually from the same guy again and again (unless you're Danny Lindsey, bless his heart).

Whatever. It happens. I wish he didn't do it, but he does...a lot. I've just sort of learned to live with it...much like the orange level terrorist alert system.

In shocking news, John Wall and Demarcus Cousins are among 5 UK players that will enter the NBA draft. Four freshmen from the same team. Geez.

When will ESPN realize that Craig James is universally regarded as a tool and fire him? Maybe when folks turn the channel every time James appears on the screen.

Seems that Ziemba is now at the point in his AU football career where he is willing to be partially candid with his real feelings. According to 2 different player's parents I know, many players really hate sarcastic bloggers that entertain themselves by taking cheap shots at players/coaches. The players won't publicly speak up because of the possibility of gang mentality retaliatory negative spin from the bloggers. It's better to stay quiet and focussed than get sucked into the banter.

Don't get me wrong, I do believe that Ziemba is a really good offensive lineman, the best we've had since McNeill, but he does tend to arrive to the party early from time to time.

Yes, his penalty did save us a turnover against Alabama last year, but there are many times (mainly in 2008 with all the OL confusion) that they seemed to come just as we were moving the ball downfield.

Morning Hotties - nice Ziemba thread and article in the MA Homer.

It's looking like rain here today, there's a high probability of rain here today. Each of which mean I'll likely be PO'd about a mere sprinkling which does nothing to move the pollen along the way.

Here's a little personal story completely unrelated to anything: yesterday evening Hot Wife is about to leave to head to our favorite greenway trail to run a few miles. Well, F4* wants to go too so he can practice his running. So we all load up and head out. Hot Wife goes in one direction and F4* and I head to where I've already measured off 100 yards distance and we run that a few times. Inevitably, he has to go to the bathroom so we go back to the trailhead and tend to business. He's no longer interested in practicing so we set off into the woods so I can dazzle him with my woodsman brilliance. I suggest we walk over to the creek and see what we can see. He picks up some rocks along the way for throwing into the creek. We get there, throw some rocks and that's done. Along the way, I show him rabbit holes, snake/chipmunk holes, tracks, old buck markings, deer tracks and explain how to differentiate between them. It's all pretty cool stuff. Towards the end as we're heading back, I hear noises which I knew to be a deer likely about to cross our path so we stop and wait quietly. Sure enough, a doe crosses the trail about 20 feet in front of us. This being the first time he's seen a deer in a natural setting, he's relatively impressed. I see by the doe's behavior that she has a baby back in the woods behind her that hasn't yet crossed the trail so I tell him we're going to wait because there's another one about to come out. Lo and behold, I'm correct and a young buck crosses the trail after his mother. I point out that we can no longer see them and they're just a few feet away and explain various laws of nature behind this.

Anyway, I'm thinking this is just a fantastic father son experience with nature and wildlife. We get back to the trailhead and Hot Wife returns. She asks how his run was and what we did. His response? "I threw rocks in the water." That's it. That's all he got out of it. I swear, it's like he has the attention of a 3 year old.

Norm, I have a semi-related, sort of similar story.

We were in Gatlinburg one year. My son was 2 at the time. We decided to take him to Cade's Cove to see some deer. We almost drove the entire loop and didn't see a thing. We got out at the visitor's center to stretch our legs.

There were some dandelions in the grass. My son thought it was great fun to blow the seeds off of the stems. (Which, of course it is.)

We hear a ruckus behind us and I turn to see a small doe walking through the crowd.

I immediately start trying to get my son to look at her. "Look, a deer." "It's a deer. Do you see it?"

He won't look. Dandelions.

My wife and I keep trying. Finally the doe is right next to him. He glances up from his dandelion stem and says, "Dog."

He looks back at his stem, blows the few remaining seeds away and starts looking for another. And that was that.

Great story Norm.

I see Dad got a lot out of that experience fo sho. F4* will surprise you one day and recall it. It first needs to soak in a little.

My daughter and I had a similar experience when she was 5 that meant much to me and seemingly not much to her. I told my wife about it and not much more was ever said about it. 8 years later, my wife showed me a 4 paragraph school paper prepared by my 12 year old wherein she fondly recounted the experience with much detail.

The parents were speaking in general and don't even look at blogs. No blogs/posters, etc. were named, so you're safe. haha. The parents were venting at me because I mentioned that I participate online.

Just so you can rest even more easily, you should know that these parent's kids play at UGA and GT. A few years ago, I heard a similar blog complaint from an AU player's parent.

I try to limit sarcasm towards AU to only something I would say to the player in person. If it is light enough and funny enough to say to their face, then it would be OK for me to put on the interwebs. Light, funny sarcasm is an art form not done well by very many, including me. Since I'm no good at funny sarcasm, so I will typically save my harsher style for Bammers or folks that go all Jim Rome on AU.

I don't know how these newspaper type articles work. The Gadsden Times had a good article about the Auburn QB situation but the by line just said Associated Press. Who is this? Is it a peson or fractions taken from several people. It did cover the same ground as did Jay in the MA this am but added some other things.

Well I am glad to hear Lee loves football and Auburn.

However, he is being stubborn if he thinks his penalties are a part of football. Yes, penalties are a part of football. However, when you personally are good for at "least" one false start a game then its an obvious problem. Many of them are drive killers. He mentioned the NFL, well as much promise as Lee has he would be on the bench fast with that many penalties. If he had that many in a year in the NFL he would be back working for Tony Mandarichs medical supply company before he knew it.

More than likely one person wrote the article. Cooperative members of the AP (Gasden Times) can re-print any article produced by any other member. The AP allows minor editing of the story to allow it to fit into the space the local paper has.

If you are in the public eye, people are going to be critical. Whether it is right or wrong, if you are out there you will have a detractor or twenty.

Digger, John Zenor(AP) occasionally puts out fairly generic articles on AU that are sometimes picked up by local papers. JG would probably know whether Zenor attends practices or recycles news from other sources, but I'm not certain that JG would respond to that question if asked.

For my reading time, JG and Bitter seem to do the best at mentioning extra and insightful stuff without getting gossipy or speculative.

Thank you ehyou.
John Zenor is the Gadsden Times Auburn beat writer and his name appears on most things from Auburn.
It may have been his with some editing.

Lee, and most guys on the Auburn team need to be more disiplined on the field. There were too many little things that got Auburn beat last year.

That said, if I was Lee Ziemba and I kept hearing about my mistakes from all sorts of people who couldn't hold my jock on the football field, while dining out with my significant other, I would get iritated too.

Hopefully he channels that into a great year this year.
