Wow, so we need a positive note on this. I suppose there is plenty of room for improvement.

The positive spin is...we suck. Wait, that's negative. the positive spin is at least we are gaining yards every game and not losing them.

2006 -- I think opponents started to pick up on Al Borges' tricks and he wasn't able to adjust.

Same quarterback. Many of the same linemen. Same tailbacks.

Ouch. I was hypnotized to forget the 99 offense. For some reason I read that and found my self clucking like a chicken. Go figure. The offense needs some Jimmy's badly.

2:44 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The 1999 team couldn't get more than 60 yards rushing per game, but we could pass ok when Leard was healthy.

This year we don't seem to do anything ok.

I think in 99 we didn't have the defensive/special teams scoring we have had this year. That has padded our numbers for this year.

Could 99 & 08 be the bad bookends for Tub's Auburn career?

Jay, the decline started with the decline in receivers after the 2005 season. We have been one hit wonders at wide receiver.

What is your opinion of Knox as a receivers coach?

2:53 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

As bad as Nallsminger was in 2003, it's still 90 yards and 6 points better per game

2:55 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

steve from columbia...I agree that the receivers decline is the underlying offensive problem. I've got a 3 paragraph analysis that ties the poor WRs(and weak Qb arms) to all of the offensive problems.

3:01 PM

I'm not going to comment on the Wr coaching b/c "mama said"..

I will say that our WR fundamentals are awful.

J. Jones is no Randy Moss.

pffft

3:03 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Nobody is Randy Moss @ Marshall circa 96.

That's PlayStation football right there.

John Parker Wilson ... a great example of how competent quarterback play can change a program's outlook.

3:06 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Wilson when he's on, is a really good QB.

3:08 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Agreed Jay. We need a QB who can actually make a defense nervous and not cheat up all the time.

3:08 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I hate watching all these highlight videos, pregame hype videos and commercials where you see players breaking free on long TD's. The reason I hate them, is because other than a KR and PR this year we haven't had many of those types of highlights since 2005.

In the last 3 years, a 15 yard gain is considered a big play for us.

3:12 PM

I'm tired of the crowd and student section singing "livin' on a prayer" and the team walking out in interlocked arms.

So true, Jay.

Greg and I just spent a few minutes fantasizing about having a Chad Pennington/Randy Moss or a Byron Leftwich/Moss combo at Auburn.

Those were beautiful games to watch.

3:21 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

FYI: Tuberville's buyout is, in fact, $6 million.

Auburn would have to cover that with two payments: One within 30 days of termination and one no more than year after termination.

Just passing that along ...

3:23 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jay,

Good work with those offensive (in this year's case, literally) stats. Quick question - do the ppg include points provided by the defense and special teams (Gabe McKenzie, Jake Ricks and Tristan Davis)?

3:25 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thanks Jay G, I was asking about that the other day, I figured if payable over a number of years then it would increase the chances of him being released. How did you happen across that information?

3:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Don't u know that bama fans are loving hearing about auburn during the telecast of their game?

3:26 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I wish I was worth $3M upon termination. Must be nice. If Auburn does pull the trigger, how can you feel bad about that.

3:26 PM
Blogger Monica said...

I always wondered what the time limitations were on a buyout! Thanks for the info.

3:26 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Good point Wegl98. Those stats have to include all scores. I bet we drop by 4 to 5 points per game if you take defensive and special teams score away.

3:30 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Eddie,

That's what I was afraid of ....

Next question - can it get any worse?

3:32 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Wegl98...if anything I have learned this year, it is to never say that it can't be any worse. That was belief about this offense compared to last year's at the beginning of the year. Otherwise, it can get worse. In matter of fact, I believe we have been consistent in getting worse from the Southern Miss game on.

Speaking of contracts and buyouts...

Does Gary Danielson's contract last as long as CBS's contract with the SEC?

Please say no?

3:35 PM

Yes, the stats include defensive scores. I know that makes the numbers less reliable in a sense.

That's what I have to work with.

We may not be losing to Ball State with Butch Davis coaching, but you better hope we don't play anyone the likes of the mighty Virginia Cavaliers. Replace CTT if we must, but please not with Davis. That dog has had his day.

7:04 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

That wasn't that bad of a loss for Davis. He had his star player out (Tate), and Virginia has been playing well at home.

If Butch Davis stays at North Carolina he will have that program built up, look at the recruiting class he's going to be bringing in. I don't care if Auburn gets him or not, but he is a damn good coach.

7:27 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wouldn't mind if we keep Tubs.

Check out this stat: On its bye week, Auburn is undefeated. Why would you fire a coach that could pull that off?

7:46 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sure he's a damn good coach. But is he really all that much better than what we have? Different yes, but better? In six years at Miami he had the following season records: 8-3, 9-3, 5-6, 9-3, 9-4, 11-1. That's 51-20 overall for a .710 winning percentage. Nearly the same as CTT. And he was in a state loaded with huge talent at a time when great players wanted to go to Miami. It would be a change, but I think, based on their body of work, the two coaches (Davis and CTT) are comparable.

7:57 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Butch Davis has a $2M buyout, do we really have people willing to fork over $8M to fire Tubs? You have to be pretty passionate to pony up that kind of money for a coach that might not be a huge upgrade.

8:00 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

ANON...Butch Davis was reviving a Miami team that was hammered by the NCAA and Florida State and Florida were in their prime. I think Butch did an admirable job at Miami. That being sad, I am still split and really don't know what to think about Tubs.

8:08 PM

How about Gary Patterson or Brian Kelly? I don't know anything about them but their records, both are plus .700 in career winning percentage and under the age of 50.

8:09 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, I never said he was better than what we have, I just said he was a good coach.

I want Tuberville to stay at Auburn. I just wish he would stop losing the game he isn't supposed to lose. It gets aggrevating.

8:10 PM
Blogger ADP said...

Schely ... I was just curious. Me? All my days as well, which is 37.

I was asking because, I don't remember too many Auburn teams that "found a way to win." We have had a long and rich history of "finding a way to lose."

Barkley,

I realize you were not pushing for a change to Davis. But a lot of people keep bringing him up as if he would be some sort of savior. I was just trying to point out that, based on what both coaches have done on the field, there's not that much difference. The underlying point here is that the coach we have is not a bad one. Yes, he's having a bad year, but he's not a bad coach. Glad to see that you, as well as some others, want him to stick around.

Eddie,

Davis did do an admirable job at Miami. CTT has also done an admirable job at AU.

Eddie, I agree on Tubs antics. I try to be a Tubs supporter (as if it matters), but his name gettng tossed out like that and hearing news reports that he accepted another job make it difficult. That'd be a major problem with bringing Muschamp in, I believe they same agent. I live in Georgia, you never hear those types of things out of Mark Richt and he's done more than Tubs in a shorter period of time.

8:41 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Eddie, clearly you've never been to Indian Pines or Pin Oaks in Auburn. Doesn't get better than that.

8:42 PM

Jay - Thanks for not taking my bet.

8:43 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Someone (and I think it was Jay or PM) said pretty definitively that, if offered, Muschamp would take the HC at Auburn. Does everyone here hate that?

Barkley - Why is Cowher funny?

I'm not advocating firing CTT right now or ever, (I'm sure he's relieved), but the point Hayes makes about Bill Stewart at WVU is valid. WVU was stuck at the last minute, strapped for cash, overly emotional and they ended up hiring the teddy bear assistant who gives everyone the warm fuzzies, but kinda sucks at coaching.

9:01 PM

vrga, you are exactly right about Richt. I live outside Atlanta and I never hear one peep about anything regarding Richt and other jobs.

9:15 PM

Yeah Muschamp is a good coach and his players love him but he might not be a good HC. He's got a lot of energy though. Jay says 0-5% chance he comes to AU.

anon - nobody said Muschamp was anything like Bill Stewart. The comparison was between the universities. The article talks about the advantage of Clemson getting a head start on the hunt for a coach and how NOT ENDING UP LIKE WVU (and their emotional hire) is a good thing.

Those other 2 coaches mentioned above may have good records but have never been up against SEC competition.

Butch Davis @ Miami didn't compete against SEC type competition and only did as good as CTT.

The SEC eats coaches. Not many can survive here. CTT does

Somebody please name a viable, successful big time coach that will come to the SEC and do better than CTT. BTW don't be silly and name Pete Caroll, Stoops, etc. Those guys got a good thing against inferior competition.
