Tuberville speaks, 10/19

OK. Unusual situation. Your Head Coach wasn't able to answer some questions about injuries, who will play, etc. As a consolation, he agreed to break protocol and meet with the media again after practice to provide (accurate) information about injuries and, possibly, how Barrett Trotter is lookin'.

He spoke only briefly at 3. Here are the highlights:
  • Initial assessment on Barrett Trotter: "Barrett did very well last week, as Neil (Caudle) did."

  • (UPDATED) On the possibility of Trotter playing this week: "We need another day. It didn't go as well as I would have hoped in terms of mistakes and stuff from all of them. We need another day of looking at all of them and trying to figure out who can do what."

  • Tuberville seemed prepared to use Trotter this week in a second-team role. He made allusions to how Auburn used Burns last season as Brandon Cox's change-of-pace complement.

  • Yes, that's a change of position for Tuberville. He said last week that Trotter would play only if expected to handle a featured role.

  • (UPDATED) On Kodi Burns' role: "He's going to get a little bit better every time he plays. We're not going to take him out, just to say ok, he's having problems let's take him out. (For Trotter,) it'll be like a deal where (Burns) went in for Brandon -- just certain plays. Young guys, whoever plays the other role, is not going to know it all. You can't expect them to. They'll know an abbreviated version."

  • On CB Jerraud Powers, who has missed one game with a hamstring injury: "I don't want to put him out there and then have a chance of losing him for the season."

  • On LB Josh Bynes: "He's been a bright spot for us. Mentally, he's a lot further along than I expected."

  • On DT/DE Zach Clayton: "The only position he hasn't played is quarterback. He's another bright spot. He's the young Tez Doolittle."

  • (UPDATED) On how practice went last week: "It was a real good week of practice, a lot better than most open dates (with) everybody kind of coasting through it. You couldn't coast through that one. We had to get better. We did a lot of contact and went against each other quite a bit. We'll do the same thing today. This will be one of the longest practices that we've had all year."

At least 15 minutes, barring an interception.

Very true. One interception, and then we see Trotter trotting out there.

Honestly, that's nothing new from Tubs. I say that because he goes against the grain of his own words since Day 1. I think he used to do it to have some fun with the media, keep you guessing maybe. But now he just appears lost and dumbfounded for the right words. It probably matters more who is on the room as opposed to what he feels is honest.

Jay do you think CTT contradicts himself on purpose? It is just weird. It like is lying to the media. I mean straight up lying. I am only asking because you actually pointed it out in your post.

3:34 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jay always points it out. I've been pointing it out myself for years. I can do some colorful impersonations in front of live audiences, too.

Reminder:

A backup QB shows you his stuff when he's called in to duty. See Brandon Cox 2004. With that said, what has Kodi showed us in a season and a half of opportunities? Think it changes overnight just because he's a starter?

3:37 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

We wanted more information on injuries and he said, basically, that he wasn't sure.

Seems reasonable for a guy who had been out recruiting for a few days. He wasn't getting hourly updates from the Training Room.

I thought it was pretty accommodating ...

As far as the Trotter stuff, I don't know. He probably doesn't know exactly what to do with Trotter ... so he just kinda creates answers on the fly.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe we should try playing Zach Clayton at QB, he couldn't be worse than Todd.

3:56 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't really think CTT is lying about Trotter. I think they are trying to develop a plan. They are evaluating practices and trying to decide. It sounds like they don't have a final decision and it wouldn't surprise me if we didn't find out anything until Thursday night.

I do find it hilarious that everyone is excited about Trotter. For weeks everyone was saying that Kodi should be the starter. In the last two games he has looked pretty bad, with the exception being the late drives in the Arkansas game.

It seems as if the backup QB will always be the fan favorite, regardless of who it is.

3:59 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

By the way, these rude remarks about Todd are pretty pathetic. He looked pretty darn good the first few games of the season. We all know he is dealing with an injury. That doesn't mean he is a bad QB. Be supportive of your team.

Agree with Tubs on Powers - letting him play again before he's ready would be a mistake. Would rather have him healthy against Georgia and St Nick.

4:03 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

In Barkley's defense, Todd was really weak against Arkansas.

4:05 PM

They need to leave the redshirt on Trotter and live and die with Kodi. I think Kodi will continue to get better each game. He just needs to slow down and let the game come to him.

Todd looked pretty rough the last couple of games. Against Arkansas he was terrible. It is obvious his arm isn't there, which is why he will likely not be the backup. I would love to see him play when he is healthy, but playing bad when you aren't healthy doesn't make you a bad player.

4:09 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I agree with leaving the redshirt on Trotter. This seems like the time that Neil Caudle should get some playing time. He was a high profile recruit and was suppose to take over for Cox. I have read where the coaches said he had a problem with throwing picks. I do believe it is time for him to show why the coaches recruited him.

4:11 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Steve from Columbia, I'm just going by what I see on the field. I don't know what games you were watching but Todd has not looked like an SEC caliber QB. Maybe if his arm was better he would be the next Peyton Manning, but I don't think we'll ever find out because he looks to be done at Auburn.

4:17 PM
Blogger Kris said...

I think the negativity that Barkley, myself and others continue to express towards Chris Todd, and to a lesser degree Kodi isn't personal. At least for my part, it is a frustration of having Brandon Cox around for six years and somehow during that time not being able to get a replacement QB recruited/prepared to play in this league. LSU has an excuse, in that Perriloux was ready to play though couldn't stay out of trouble.

4:45 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

If Trotter helps us win games now, then he needs to be on the field.

He'll still have 3 more years.

4:52 PM
Blogger Mark said...

hope Caudle will be the first choice. He was much higher recruited and I think will be a much better QB than Trotter in the long run.

That said, it happens on the field.

4:53 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Caudle needs to stop throwing the ball to defenders.

i'm ready to know the answer to this whole Trotter thing. every day i change my mind (not that it matters). my first response after last week's debacle would be to throw him in there. the more i simmer on it the more i say live and die with kodi. when will the madness stop?

four QB's on scholly and at least two of them haven't shown themselves prepared to play on a college level. I think all of them are talented enough to compete, I don't believe those preparing them to do so are talented enough to do the job. Lets face it, QB developement hasn't been a strong suit of the last four years (excepting 2004 and Jason Campbell).

5:01 PM

More QB talk....yawn..

I'm wondering why the fascination with asking CTT that same Qb questions day after day, then analyzing every word of his response and agonizing and condemning him when it is stated different from before. Stuff changes...so what!

He should probably just use the CN$ tactics and not answer...of course folks would complain about that also.

I don't think that what is done with the QBs right now really matters in the long run

5:05 PM
Blogger Mark said...

Caudle probably has not had an opportunity to throw to defenders since the spring, since Kodi and the annointed one have had most of the reps.

We picked up Caudle as a Four star and THE guy to replace Brandon. Now, we get Trotter and Caudle is forgotten.

I really don't care what he did in the spring. Let both of them loose now.

See what they have.

As I stated, whoever gets the shot should prove it on the field. Burns, Caudle or Trott.

5:10 PM

Jay, you sound like Franklin on Caudle. Frankly, Franklin was full of it in some cases. I don't care how well Todd knew "the system". He had a pathetic arm injury or not. And he's not even an average athlete for non-athlete style SEC QBs.

5:17 PM

By the way, team. I talked to somebody who talked to Franklin this weekend.

He said two things that strike me as interesting.

#1 Tubs was a (starts with a 'p' and ends with a 'y') because he didn't try to bring harmony between Franklin and the other notorious coaches.

#2 He said he knew he shouldn't have accepted a job where the employer was negotiating a contract with him half way into the season while anoyher guy was in place.

#2 is stupid to me. But Franklin is a self proclaimed dumbass. A ton of contracts are negotiated that way. And Franklin was part of those negotiations and had no problem with it then. What a ding dong.

Look at Todd's stats early in the season. We were passing for more yards than we had in several years. Early on, the problems with this offense had nothing to do with the quaterback.

6:05 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I like our chances if we don't try to switch offensive schemes every drive.

6:06 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Steve a lot of that was passing attempts and extremely short yardage stuff in gobs. We didn't score much at all. Points are the most important stat of all.

No offense. Just making a slight point.

6:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

wareaglerk, I agree. If we are going to run the spread with have to stick with it. I don't see a reason not to line up in the I for short yardage, but bouncing back and forth isn't going to work.

The coaches have constantly talked about simplifying the playbook. This is something that I get sick of hearing. You only install enough offense that the players can grasp. If you have to simplify the offense, it means the coaches screwed up big time and didn't give the players time enough to understand what was installed prior to installing more.

6:12 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The 1st game of the year as a team I think we passed for 80 yards.

Todd had a really good game vs Southern Miss.

QB was part of our offensive problems, but playcalling and execution was the problem early on...then it started to be everything.

Right now it's hard to name anyone on offense who is consistantly playing at a high level...and not many playing at a solid level.

6:12 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

On, simplifying the playbook... I think at this point if my math is correct from the quotes from the coaches, since game 1 we've removed 145% of the playbook.

Not sure how that can be possible, but it apparently happened.

I just want us to establish a positive identity on offense, no matter what our primary formation is during the game.

6:14 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Tuberville was very short and not particularly noteworthy.

Burns and Tristan Davis had some interesting things to say. I'll pass that along here in a bit.

Trotter has run the spread longer than anyone at AU..including coaches.

To continually say we need to simplify what we are doing is basically saying our players are morons and can't run this offense. I don't buy it.

I have never seen anything that documented that CTF didn't get along with the other coaches. I have seen it in chat rooms, but for some reason I hesitate to believe what I read in chat rooms.

I do find it likely that it was why he was fired because I doubt CTT would fire a coordinator in the middle of the season for lack of performance. Staff conflicts makes much better sense.

7:58 PM
Blogger schley said...

No doubt it was conflict.

Firing a coach in mid season is a major malfunction.

A big fat mess...

8:17 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Just some evening thoughts:

Caudle has some very good skill sets from what I saw this spring. He is faster than you would expect, has a strong arm and when he is on he is very accurate. I saw him throw several great TD passes that were just beautiful. However, he is also good for a few INTs as well. I mean just bad, not even close INTs.

CTT flip flopping...well the Tigers have always been a "fluid" situation so I give him a pass on most of that. Besides, we just fired a "straight talk" coach and you see how much his "truth telling" endeared him to the AU faithful.

CTT status at seasons end...I cant imagine a bigger mistake if AU fires him.

Kodi...is our best change at salvaging the season.

Trotter...I dont see this gamble paying off. He will be thrown into the fire at the toughest part of our schedule. I'm sure he's good. I doubt he's THAT good. Maybe if the offense was already stable but not with this chaos.
