Tuberville: "I spent $600K to hire a consultant to teach my Coaches enough about this to be dangerous."

That's one thing I take from that.

Looks like Tony F got to keep his AU shirts though.

That is painful to watch. I have always liked Tubs, which just makes watching his awkward attempt to lie that much more difficult. Tough day for AU.

AUfull. There has to be more to the situation that "not getting it done on the field". On the upside, Todd will be treated like Yoshi on Revenge of the Nerds and will have to wash everyones jock strap.

Who will call plays?

My gut tells me Steve Ensminger. My brain tells me Eddie Gran.

I can't reconcile the two.

7:53 PM

Also, how is asking at what point the decision was made a "non question". Sounds like a hell of a question. I guess Tony's attempt at getting more involved yesterday was a little late.

7:54 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thanks for the great work Jay. I see alot of Kiffin talk but why would he leave one circus to go to another? I think CTT may have to hire Lee-Scott's OC after this disaster.

7:55 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

It seems to me like this is only getting worse. My initial hope when I heard about this was that Tuberville had found a better option, but after watching that press conference he looked as clueless as I would be standing up there.

So, we're still running the spread, but we fired the guy we brought in to teach it? That makes tons of sense!

7:56 PM
Blogger Loganville Tiger said...

I don't see an OC - and maybe an HC God forbid until the end of the season

7:57 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Gran...

Please...

These guys can't even put the best talent on the field much less coach Xs and 0s.

7:58 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I heard that Nall, Gran and Ensminger came to CTT and said they had finally finished Franklins course and passed and that they could now run the spread.

7:58 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

It took Borges to get Caddy and Ronnie lined up in the same backfield otherwise Ronnie would have been a third round pick. No, these guys can't coach an offense. They can't coach special teams into shoring up the oppositions's return game either.

8:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tubs says, he's committed to the spread, we're still going to run the spread, the guys are getting better at it, and it's a good offense. This is after he fires the guy who is supposed to be the spread guru. This all adds up to personality conflicts, plain and simple. I'm sure there is a lot more to the situation than we'll ever know.

8:12 PM
Blogger ron mexico said...

Ensminger is definately going to call the plays... He's got experience at it and in 2003 that offense got a little bit better when ensminger stepped in.

8:16 PM

Rodney Scott on Franklin's departure and his commitment to Auburn:

"I feel pretty good about (my commitment) now because now I think we’ll get back to the old Auburn, running downhill and everything, like it was with Cadillac Williams."

See, this is not a scatback.

8:18 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The offense in 2003 got a little better against lesser competition. LSU and UGA killed us late in that year.

8:18 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

LSU wasn't late and UGA killed everybody. All LSU did was run the "slant". You know, the slant. GT's slant. USC's slant. We couldn't do anything about the slant.

Nallsminger sucked, guys.

8:20 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

I guess I'm just more confused than most. Anytime you have to fire a coach mid-season, you look bad. But what looks worse, taking care of what you consider to be the problem now or waiting until it drags your team to a 6-6 season?

If the spread is simply a formation, then why is a hybrid offense based on 60/40, spread/ace a bad thing?

To me this is when you need a politician/coach. What if CTT stood there and said, "I fired CTF because he was a loose cannon and a stubborn SOB who would not run the plays we knew worked. I obviously couldnt side with him over the coaches who have supported me and stood with me for 10+ years. I know they will always have my back and CTF is just trying to redeem his college coaching career. But becaue of this, he team is falling into a deep depression and losing even more confidence in the staff and each other, we'll probably lose 1/3 of our recruits along with the majority of the remaining games since the coaches we have left dont know squat about coaching WRs or running a spread offense". We would all be sending in donations to help with the buyout clause. He has dug himself into a hole that's for sure, but if this team is going to at least make this season respectable it will be because of CTT. The AU family at least owes the team our support while he figures this out. I guess that's all I have to say about that.

8:22 PM
Blogger ron mexico said...

I agree completely... why does it have to be all or none... mix it up, don't be so predictable... that's what got us in trouble to start with

omg, bowie, nice yoshi reference, sweet. This is all sooo sooo nasty, like a mexican soap opera. This whole situation, its like asking the ugly girl to the dance and then finding a better date at the last minute, u have to dump the ugly chick, had to be done, needed an upgrade....do you think coach blakeney will hire tony back? Jay how long is Franklin on contract for?

8:39 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Those who can do, those who can't teach...Franklin was know more for teaching the spread rather than coaching or game time play calling. You people saw the play calling for 6 games, Jay illustrated several series this morning. It seemed bad to me and I'm just some jerk watching the game.

8:41 PM

Gran would not be a wise choice. As mentioned earlier Gran thought nothing of Ronnie B's ability. Remember USC in Cali - when Carnell was cramping, RB was sitting on the bench!! Then boom RB bust out of "thin air" when Carnell went down. I don't think EG can actually DO the job IMO

Jay,

Tubbs is sooooo loyal to his boys almost to a fault. All outsiders never seem to breakthrough they all leave or get fired. Ever noticed that. If one of his assistants mess up, he just moves them around.

We have Nall a chance, we sucked on offense, he moved him back to the line to coach. Emsminger gave it a try, he sucked, we moved him to qb's and tight ends, hell, he even kept Phillip Lolley on staff as a NFL contact person, when he turned out as a terrible coach. Its like Entourage, Tubbs is Vince Chase, I assume Nall is Turtle, Gran is E and Emsminger is Drama.

What do you think?

8:43 PM

Lane Kiffin is out of the question. The problems he had in Oakland was not having full control.

8:45 PM

For those of you excited about some more Gran/Nall/Ensminger ball you must understand you saw plenty of it last week. Still excited? They can try to "run downhill" all they want but they won't score many points doing it. That's easy to stop for an average SEC team.

I have even heard Pat Nix as coordinator, not sure I am sold on him, Miami where is OC at has not impressed me much. He played for the baby Cherub, Bowden. Plus Chris Todd reminds me of a baby NIx, without the winning pass to Florida on his resume. Nix has the pass to Florida as a famous painting, so far the only Todd highlight would be his numerous INT's. Plus I still have not found any cleaning product to get that Gorbachav stain off of Nix's forehead.

Auburn commit Harris of Lovejoy says he’s still a Tiger
By Jeff Hood | Wednesday, October 8, 2008, 08:05 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Lovejoy offensive lineman Andre Harris learned around 8 p.m. tonight that Tony Franklin won’t be his offensive coordinator when he enrolls at Auburn next year.

“I understand that they had to do what’s right for the team,” said Harris, who is rated as the 23rd-best offensive guard in the nation by Scout.com and a member of the AJC’s The Georgia Top 150. “So, I’m not going to disagree with them.”

Harris’ said his commitment isn’t impacted by the decision to replace the offensive coordinator.

“Regardless of who’s coaching me, I’m still going to be an Auburn Tiger,” said Harris, who will play on the Auburn offensive line at guard or tackle. “I can play on any offense.

“I don’t have a preference on a type of offense. My job is to block and get the running backs going and to protect the quarterback.”

10:06 PM

My final thoughts...

After I heard tony franklin speak for the first time my thought was, "wow, this guy is honest." Then I started to think how that would go with tuberville's political fascad. It was either going to be like peanut butter and jelly or Kobe and Shaq. It turned out to be the not good scenario. The lack of production, quotes like "Hell I'd boo me," and a loss to a team we hadn't lost to in 50+ years proved to be too much.

As franklin and his MCP drove off in the direction of Troy's campus blarring Air Supply's "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" and text messaging chris todd. I think the spread was riding shotgun in his Hyundai Sante Fe. At least our offense now has some hope for this season instead of watching ben tate get handed the ball out of shotgun and hoping he turns into Bo Jackson from Tecmo Bowl just to get a first down.

So i'm going to sleep and dreaming of two tight end sets, linemen in a three point stance, and play action passes.

"Not everyone. In November 07, when Georgia was shutting down everyone in the SEC, Troy lost in Athens 44-34."

We weren't talking about last year. It was brought up that Nallsminger got better as the year went on, and I brought up the 03 LSU & UGA games were late in the year. I think those were 31-7 & 27-7 with a loss to Ole Miss at home in the middle.

5:55 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

In 2003, Nall did better in the iron bowl and music city bowl, because the week after the uga game (jetgate) he said screw it and quit trying to continue copying petrino and ran more of the smash-mouth game he was comfortable with.

6:04 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Auburn aired it out against Bama. That's when Nallsminger said "screw it". They new the direction was to bring in a new OC. You had an NFL QB that was barely being used. They opened up his arm after Caddy finished off his greatest run in his history at Auburn. But Auburn was vastly more talented than Alabama.

9:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

no we weren't. we're only as bad as the measure of ctt's influence on the offense. or should we say meddling?

9:08 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

So who's on the bubble to be the next OC? Pat Nix? Norm Chow? What about Pat Sullivan? Can we say that 'Momma called' and get him from Samford?

As for the gloom and doom prognosticators - did any of you really believe there would be any improvement over the next four games? How about our chances with the Spread against the Amen corner? We've got about five or six weeks to perfect an adequate offense in preparation for the last two games.

It's bad to change in midstream, but if the horse is unable to swim, it doesn't pay to ride him into deep water. My thinking is that even with a basic "Ace" package, our athleticism and defense will get us enough to win the next two games. After that, Auburn will need a good scheme to beat Ole Miss and then a better one to compete against Georgia and Bama.

For that, we'll need a good OC and a well practiced scheme that is deep enough to make adjustments in the second half.
