Football chatter, 4/13

Hey everyone. In lieu of any substantive news to report today, how about we examine a few things that have caught my eye during the past few weeks?

I discussed a few of these things on the radio today. So what?

  • I get a lot of questions about the wideouts. I often give different answers because, well, it's a complicated situation right now.

Montez Billings hasn't been practice as best I can tell. We haven't received any answers about why he's not practicing. Tim Hawthorne is a solid contributor. I sense that Quindarius Carr can be a solid contributor. PPL? Can't tell yet. Terrell Zachery appears to have some star power, but I'm still waiting to see potential meet performance.

One thing is for sure: DeAngelo Benton and Emory Blake will have a chance to play immediately.

  • Depth along the offensive line is laughably barren. Auburn has almost no safety net in place. With Kyle Coulahan now off the team, the Tigers have seven healthy scholarship linemen. When Bart Eddins returns from his injury, that makes eight. Freshmen Andre Harris and John Sullen arrive this summer, but you know how that goes. Plus, Sullen is a long-shot prospect from the start.

  • Eltoro Freeman has a real chance to get everything you wanted Tray Blackmon to be. Freeman has all the speed, bloodthirst of the LBOH ... but adds an awareness that was missing from the Tigers' last Impossibly Hyped Linebacker. I like him.

  • Mike McNeil sounds like he may be out for a while with the leg injury he suffered last weekend. If that's true, remember that broken bones can heal firmly within six months.

Also, Christian Thompson is one heck of an understudy. He has some star potential.

  • I couldn't make a list without mentioning the weird, unnecessary decision to close practices and scrimmages to the media. Gene Chizik said he didn't want distractions. I guess Tigerettes and hordes of high-school coaches never cause distractions.

Judging from the message-board gossip posted by one of those high-school coaches last week (re: the imagined "fight" between Coleman and Rocker), Chizik may want to reconsider his reasoning.

Jay Gilligan Tate on D&B radio in B'ham:

Gus Malzhan's offense is exactly like Tony Franklin's.

DeAngelo Benton will start as a Frosh and be the MVP of the offense.

Christian Thompson will be a 1st rounder in 2 years.

Michael Goggins is over weight and will move to tackle.

Eltoro Freeman will be what Blackmon should have been which is Dick Butkus.

That's about it right?

Sensi said: "I think Jay G. is older than his time. I remember talking to old school (like from the 40s-50s era) reporters who covered beats they cared very little about. I think that's what makes his coverage worth following - Jay G. doesn't care about Auburn football or really American football. That kind of detached objectivity can make for compelling coverage"

This was my favorite comment! Jay doesn't get so crazy over Auburn like us and that's what keeps us in-line!

Also Mon, the reason I'm in the Gump after 30 years of moving, is only because it is close to Auburn! Leaving as soon as possible.

Reason for closed practices - Embarrased to let others see how bad they really may be.

Reason for letting coaches in - To let the HS coaches see first hand so they can report to their players to go to Auburn for immediate playing time.

Not many schools allow the press into practices anymore. The info age has created too much info and this is probably a way to curtail. Which SEC schools still allow open press at practices? Not AU, Ala, UGA, Fla. Don't know about the rest.

I wonder if some schools allow a few trustworthy reporters in and not the masses. The unintended consequence of that would be a real negative 'tude from the guys leftout.

According to other sites McNeil will be ready in about 5 months before he can tolerate the pain enough to play with the metal in his leg. Billings suffered some sort of leg injury in the 1st practice and is expected to be back for 2-a-days. I have it on good authority that the QB race will narrow down to Burns and Caudle as we all expected it would be. This will most likely happen after the spring game. Auburn leads for Seastruck after a great weekend visit. Jawara White continues to take his time with his eventual commit to Auburn.

Seanachie - Seastrunk said that he loved his Auburn visit. While listening to Rivals radio this morning. I found out that LSU is the leader and TX is pushing hard. He has visited TX 3 times in the last 6 weeks.

For those with Satellite... What do you do for internet? Broadband through cable company or DSL through phone company?
Also... for those in B'ham area (Luv), what's better, DishNetwork or DirectTV??

Good luck Phred on the Leed exam. Tough test from my understanding. I almost took it, but never got around to it.

D.Miller- Not in Bham, but i've had both Dish Network and currently Directv, and Directv wins hands down. They are supreme when compared to Dish Network as far as i'm concerned. Better programing and better when storms come rolling around.

8:07 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I have HD locals via Dish Network.

DirecTV doesn't even offer SD locals in Montgomery. You're on your own.

That was the deciding factor for me.

Now my "cable" company, which now doesn't get my cable business, is charging me $70/month for high-speed internet. AND I OWN THE MODEM.

I really couldn't tell a bit of difference between Dish and DirecTV.

The only reason we switched to DirecTV is because employees of my company get a discount.

8:16 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

AU - we bundled through AT&T so we could get better deals on our cell phone stuff. Interwebs is through AT&T. Now they will tell you during any storm your going to lose your satellite, and that is true, although its gotta be a pretty doggone big storm. However, I had the experience of losing the internet AND the cable for no reason at all. Middle of a pretty day, boom there goes the cable. After the third time with that I decided it was time to get directTV. Oh one big plus in my opinion is that we get the NFL network, and in Atlanta you can get all the local stations.

8:17 PM
Blogger Monica said...

AU1 - You should call Dirty and ask her what she prefers in B'ham.

8:17 PM
Blogger Monica said...

I don't know how many years I've had Verizon DSL, but it has NEVER been down. That's pretty awesome.

Dish and Direct are pretty even I think - difference being locals, DVR and who has the best special going at the time.

8:19 PM

Yeah Comcast and NFL network are in a tizzy. They may pull May 1. May could be a bad month, no NFL network and Preakness leaving Baltimore.

8:19 PM

And talk about shenanigans. Just travel along with Rep. Gopher, and expect hilarity to ensue.

9:21 PM
Blogger Jet said...

And you could also expect a "cast against type" plot with Charles Nelson Reilly as a hetero playboy or some such ridiculousness.

9:22 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Wasn't that great, ehyou!? Glad you liked it. You have excellent taste. ;-)

Prowler - It's perfectly ok. I know you 24 people LOVE your Jack Bauer.

Someone pay Seanzie some attention and tell him how young he is so he can move past the Loveboat.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this or not, but Connie Frederick passed away yesterday.

Seanzie..
What is "Mafia Wars"? I see that some of my buds are into it.

9:24 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

It's a game of the "crackrock" genre. You can play on facebook. I enjoy it.

9:25 PM
Blogger Monica said...

I wish I hadn't listened when someone told me Mob Wars was cooler than Mafia Wars.

Have a good night hotties, I'll be back with y'all bright and early.

Can't help it, Mon. It's good stuff.

And by the way, I think Mr. U has a huge crush on you. He can't seem to keep you off his mind. I know that probably grosses you out.

9:33 PM
Blogger Monica said...

He does seem a bit obsessed.

Blogger ADP said...

somehow I missed the scoop on the "imagined fight". What was that all about?

9:34 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Chip Chip ... get you the deluxe cheeseburger ... hold the maters and mayo ... they don't have fries, so get a bag of chips and a can Coke.

If you're still hungry, get you a chilled Snickers bar.

It's located on South Decatur Street, just north of I-85. Decatur is a one way headed south, so you'll need to take Union Street to High Street, turn left, then left on Decatur. Hamburger King will be on your left.

9:36 PM
Blogger Prowler said...

I missed that as well...anyone know the deal?!

9:37 PM
Blogger Prowler said...

Oh it will clog your arteries alright, Chip! You might want to have 911 on speed dial.

9:39 PM
Blogger Prowler said...

Speaking of burgers...anyone ever eaten at Joes on W Fairview? They have HUGE burgers.

Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Nick Swisher pitched the a scoreless inning for the Yankees, something none of the 4 pitchers they brought in could do. Sign of the appocalypse?

9:47 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Prowler - If I could I'd send you a burger from Fat Patty's. You could share it with 2 of your best pals.

9:53 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I want on the mailing list Mon

Nick Swisher pitched?! A scoreless inning with a strikeout?? Wow.

Hamburger King is the official burger of the HABOTN.

Any attempts to infringe upon this endorsement will be met with the full legal weight of the HABOTN.

Thank you.

It was comical Prowler, so slow the players didn't know what to do with it. I personally think Kapler sould be sent down to single A ball for striking out against a 1st baseman. The other two popped out. Swisher looked like he was having fun. There was no windup, no pre pitch ritual. He just stepped on the mound and threw the ball.

10:04 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Look into my eyes and see if I look skerit.

I wonder how a hamburger would travel from Huntington where you two guys live?

10:04 PM
Blogger Prowler said...

Well then. Sorry, Jet.

I have been reconsidering the QB situation. I consider it possible that the reason a starter hasn't been names is that Malzahn wants them to compete. It goes along with not having the media at practice and praising one of them. He doesn't appear to have wanted them to know where they stood.

This is my latest theory and is likely to change within the next ten minutes. I will express my frustration during the next TMOA.

10:05 PM
Blogger Monica said...

He's all talk, Prowler. We just pat his head and tell him he's purdy.

Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Mon, you could make a tour of the southeast bringing burgerly love to hotties everywhere. It'll be wonderful.

10:07 PM
Blogger Jet said...

One of these days, Mon. One of these days. Pow!

10:08 PM
Blogger Prowler said...

He was probably messing with Girardi, asking to pitch and Joe figured he couldn't do any worse than the rest of them.

That sucks for Kapler...I bet the guys ragged him pretty bad.

10:08 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Mon,
I will let you know if I need to get one of those cards from you! I'm going to be checking prices between Dish and DTV over the next few days...

I'm still looking for a good option for internet.

I second the motion by Brother Jet to officially list Hamburger King as the official HABOTN hamburger provider.

JGT, do you plan to claim your winnings?

Has anyone considered the possibility that Billings and McKenzie are just upset because they have been asked to move to the offensive line? Never thought of that one, now did you?

10:09 PM
Blogger Jet said...

McKenzie resisted a move to long snapper, while Billings is in negotiations to be the new coach at BC.

10:12 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

My guess is Girardi knew it was a lost cause and didn't want to use up any more of his bullpen. He had already gone through 3 guys out of the bullpen.

10:12 PM
Blogger Monica said...

You're purdy AND brilliant, Jet.

If you live between B'ham and Prattville I'll be happy to bring you some burgerly love.

10:13 PM
Blogger Prowler said...

I'd rather have McKenzie at TE than Trott.
