THURSDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,197
Hey everyone. I saw a Lamborghini Gallardo convertible during my morning commute. It was registered in Montgomery. I am beyond shocked because, you know, I expected to go my entire life without seeing a Lamborghini Gallardo convertible with a "3" tag.
You Facebook people can peep my latest domicillian calamity. My favorite tree went down in the wind event we had in Montgomery the other day. Damn pear trees. No staying power.
(Putting that one on the tee.)
You want Auburn information. I know. Here we go.

You want Auburn information. I know. Here we go.
THINGS GLEANED FROM SPRING PRACTICE
- Gene Chizik represents a major shift in attitude: This is not Tommy Tuberville Jr. Chizik, who spent three seasons working under Tuberville, reminds nobody of the Tigers' former head coach. Practices were closed. Player access was somewhat restricted. Injury information was limited. OK, all information was limited. People seemed to enjoy Tuberville for his provincial ways. They won't be saying that about Chizik. I'm not saying he won't be successful. I'm saying he won't be a crowd charmer. Do you care? Probably not as long as the team wins.
- I know why Gus Malzahn has been successful: He works smarter. The guy is a bookworm who constantly is examining defenses and other offenses for ideas he can implement into his own paradigm. Offensive coordinators typically are happy, chatty, carefree guys (ie Al Borges, Tony Franklin, Noel Mazzone) who approach the game like art. It's organic. Malzahn has a more calculating nature, which I typically associate with defensive coordinators. I expect Auburn's offense to be surprisingly intuitive next season.
- The new coaches are very hands-on: You have the theatrics of Trooper Taylor, the raw vitriol of Jay Boulware, the abrupt stylings of Curtis Luper and the minute-by-minute oversight of Ted Roof when he's with the linebackers. The days of sideline coaching are over. This group has more energy than their predecessors. It's a more intense experience for the players without a doubt. Will that affect major changes? We'll see.

I'll forever have my friends on the record talking about how badly we were going to get beat down. There was also some obnoxious fan, bordering on Bamaesque delusions of grandeur...he bolted with 2 to go in the first half.
i think i've watched that game 5 or 6 times. the 1st half never gets old.
That's the most dominant game I've ever seen a Tuberville coached team play vs an SEC team. The 2005 Iron bowl was close, but they hung around and made it look close. This was domination for 60 minutes.
I remember before the game Barkley was on the Gameday set predicting victory and the UT fans were all upset about that.
However, nowhere near as upset as they were at halftime.
My two favorite moments in that game are Ronnie Brown running over Jason Allen and CT ripping what would have been an interception out of a UT DB's hands and running the other way with it.
This has to be a pretty good streak we've got going on consecutive threads getting to 3+ pages.
i went to that game in Knoxville. By far my favorite road game I have ever been to not including wins in Tuscaloser.
THose stands were empty by mid 3rd quarter
Morning Hot Ones! Scottie B put me down on the unofficial hoodie list as well. And I am down with going to Knoxville to pick it up and catch my Tigers in action. I love Knoxville! I had the good fortune to be there for a semester of training/classes when Pat Summit & Tameka Holdsclaw won their 3rd NCAA championship in 98. Beautiful city, beautiful people (except when they know you're an AU fan) lol
The 1999 UGA game was the best road game I've been too. They were 6-2 and we had lost 5 straight before beating Central Florida the week before.
We were up 31-0 at half time. There were many slack jaws in the stands around me.
Ben Leard played awesome....wait, what did I just say?
sweet BigCat, looking forward to seeing ya.
the '97 & '99 LSU games were sweet road trips too. '99 @ UGA i'll always think of Ronny Daniels running with one shoe on.
I was at the UT game with my roommate... in the UT section. People here messing with us before the game and talking trash. That game was awesome.
Hey, that reminds me of something: remember how after the offense sucked the first game last year, everyone kept talking about how the articles written were really similar to the articles written after the first game of the '04 season? It was comforting to see we also stumbled out of the gate that year, so there was a chance we would rebound and still be awesome.
Wow, yeah, just like the '04 season. Sheesh
Having thought of this for a while, I don't think it's a good idea for Trooper to have a HABOTN T.
Any Trooper chest bumps in a HABOTN T would surely create a nuclear reaction that would vaporize thousands of innocent citizens -- plus leave radiation behind for generations.
That Ben Leard vs Quincy Carter game was awesome. All week long the media was building the hype. The TV camera was there for the coin toss as Quincy tried to stare down Ben. Quincy kept saying over and over, "Give Ben the ball".Daring him to do something with it.
Georgia gave Ben the ball and then he kicked their red monkey arse.
Favorite road victories (pretty much in order):
1. 07 Florida (as I've said before ... this one's personal ... last one Dad and I watched together)
2. 04 Tennessee
3. 94 Florida
4. 05 Georgia
5. 83 Georgia
6. 99 LSU
7. 99 Georgia (was at a family dinner in Point Clear, and sat out in the car because the douche cable in Fairhope/Pt. Clear didn't have ESPN2)
8. 93 Georgia (I was in the stands for this one)
9. 97 LSU
Jet...
The question is, could that power be harnessed and it's destructive force directed at Little Nicky's forehead?
Aubie...
I have heard that Ben told Quincy that they would be down by 7 when they got the ball. And of course they were. I have been unable to either confirm nor deny this quote.
Are there any horticulture experts here? I need tree advice.
I think the 05 UGA game left me at risk for future heart problems. Great ending to a wild game.
Mr. President Pro Tem D Miller ...
Pear trees bad ... liable to fall on house.
Jet, my favorite road trip experiences of all time:
1. '97 LSU
2. '04 SECCG vs. UT
3. '02 BAMA
4. '99 LSU
sean...
Is that the one where they made a long pass play to the 1 and then we stuffed em and time expired?
greatest road wins I've attended
1. '71 at Georgia
2. '04 at UA-T
3. '97 at LSwho
4. '83 at Georgia
that's without giving it any thought; those just jumped right out there. must get back to work.
no, that was the 2001 game at UGA where we stuffed him at the end. he's referring to the Cox to Obomanu pass on 4th down in 2005.
man, i would've loved to see 'Super Sully' clinch the Heisman in '71. nice one.
scottie...
Ahhh yes. Forth and forever. I remember now.
scottie b- by far the most electrified atmosphere, right up there with First Time Ever.
Coach Lorendo (what a stud) was chasing GA students off the roof or the Holiday Inn in the wee hours of the night.
oh, I guess I should have included
'83 IB
'87 IB
'88 IB
since any game in Bham was a road game. Sure wish I could have been at '72 or '82 IBs :-(
4th and 16 to Aromashadu I believe, and then he fumbled at the end but it was recovered and we didn't get the touchdown but we got the field goal.
all this talk of games gone by have made it really hard to get anything done.
i guess i'm going to lunch to re-focus.
sorry Sean, you're right, it was #1 Aromashodu. bad Scottie B. bad bad.
Fourth and forever also reminds me of fade they hit to win at the end. I think that one was 4th and 15-20. Maybe '02 or '03.
That was '02...heartbreaker.
My 5 favorite road games I've attended were...
2002 Iron Bowl
2004 in Knoxville
2007 in the Swamp
1999 in Athens
2004 Iron Bowl
I went to the Swamp once.
1996
We scored 10
They scored 51
Needless to say, not fun.
That 51-10 game in the swamp was directly due to Dameyune Craig talking all week about how Florida hadn't played anyone and that's why they were undefeated. Apparently Spurrier and his boys took offense to that and decided to shut Craig up.
I'm looking for BBQ recommendations in Sweetwater, TN and if there is a city park or some sort of park that would allow a 3 year old to play and burn off road trip energy.
Thanks for that tidbit, Jet. I will stay far from pear trees... Bradfords in particular.
That 51-10 game ... we were so badly depleted in the defensive line we ran a 2-man front.
Sacked Wuerffel on the first play, then they ripped down the field for a TD.
We scored on a throw back screen to Lizard to tie it. Then it was over.
Monica,
The only things I can think of in Sweetwater are The Lost Sea and The Sweetwater Flea Market.
I'm sure they have parks there, but those are the only two places I've ever stopped there.
He said "Poo Holes" ... heh heh heh
I stopped there once ... actually I was stopped there once ... by the Tennessee State Police, who didn't like Alabama tags driving 68 in a 55 zone (at the time)
Thanks, RK. I think we may just play it by ear.
Sorry I couldn't help, it's not far from where I grew up, but I know nothing of that area.
As far as the 02 UGA game goes, if only Horace Willis had jumped, he could have deflected the ball.
I remember Ronnie Brown playing hurt in the 2nd half and he may have cost us the game right before UGA's final drive by running out of bounds to avoid a hit and it stopped the clock giving them more time.
also the punter in that 02 UGA game shanked a couple in the 4th quarter that didnt help
That would have been Damon Duval, who stunk as a freshman and as a senior.
My season tickets used to be the row in front of his family. However I never knew it until after he had graduated and would sit with them occasionally.
I can only imagine how much they heard me cussing him over the years.
RK ...
You are confused. Michael Johnson shoved Willis. OPI, as the officials call it, went uncalled.
RK - if you cussed him as bad as i did, you owe tham an apology
I hold Duval personally responsible for keeping us out of a bowl game in 1999. His missed FG vs Ole Miss and his 3 misses vs Miss State kept us from at least a 7-4 record that year.
(Well Tub's dumb decision to take a safety vs State also was part of the problem.)
Duval gets a lot of credit for those 3 games in a row in 2001 (Vandy, Miss State and Florida) where he kicked game winners, but he constantly out kicked his coverage on punts and was never anywhere near consistant.
Then there is the low line drive PAT like FG attempt that would have beaten Florida in 2002.
And that's me being nice because he's a Chattanooga kid...imagine if I didn't have a hometown bias.
RK ...
He also missed a critical FG vs. UAT in 1999 early in the third quarter.
It would have forced UAT to pass to get back in the game. Instead, they put in T. Watts and turned the game over to Shaun Alexander.
Throw in the questionable play call to pass out of the end zone after stopping them on fourth down, which was a killer.
Duval nearly cost us the Syracuse game as well, missing a chippy that would have won it.
Thanks to that crazy hook, you never knew if Duvall's kick was going in until the last second. That guy caused some heart attacks over the years.
This one is for Harrison: woman gets chased by a bear and is hit by a car:
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gKKDC6HjZEqxCsRQZQlxDDFW_5iwD97ON1D80
evil bears and puppets.......this world is just not safe.
Damon Duval. if only he had gotten that chip shot FG up over the line at UF in 2002, we would've beaten them 4 consecutive times. that was a fun game (road trip) in the 2nd half except for Grossman beating us in OT. thanks for bringing that up everyone. thanks a lot. grrrrr....
For my favorite road games I have attended, that would have topped 2004 UT if he had just made that dumb field goal. Scottie B, remember they put up some sign after they were up by a bunch in the first half! It was something like, "Auburn Sucks" and it covered one of those orange walls. Boy, we almost stuck it to them.
Also, I was in the visitor's section on row two at the 50 yard line. At the Swamp, the bench is about 5 yards from the stands; so much closer than any other stadium I have been too. You could hear the coaches yelling and stuff. It was like a high school game; we were yelling different players' name and they would turn and smile.
Crap Duval!
"Police and the Department of Wildlife located the bear and tranquilized it. If Swendsen identifies it as the one that chased her, it will be destroyed. "
Yeh, I'd hate for them to put down the wrong (wo)maneating bear. That would just be criminal.
Black bears are generally pretty skittish. If a black bear follows you at a distance of 10 feet, it's only because he intends to eat you.
Jet,
I remember that FG miss in 99 vs Alabama and the safety as well. However I dismiss that game because I feel no matter what we did in that game Shaun Alexander wasn't going to allow Alabama to lose it. He put that team on his back that day, as soon as it looked like we had them we couldn't stop him.
I remember our last offensive play of that game was Ben Leard's 1st interception all year.
The 2002 Florida game once Carnell went down with his broken leg everything looked dim, then Brown busted a long run on a 4th and 1 for a TD and Campbell came in off the bench and we were a different team the rest of the game.
i'd much rather get hit by a car than eaten by bears. I hope she identifies many bears to be "tranquilized"
michael, i was sitting against the orange wall in the North Upper Deck in 2002 right in front of the loud speakers. we couldn't hear ourselves talk b/c of it.
all i (allow myself to) remember from the 99 iron bowl is seeing the sea of crimson/white celebrate in the end zone after the game. then getting berated by Bama fans while walking back to my house and going immediately to bed.
I've been birthday shopping for the daughter. I'll update a bit later.
Fight the power!
RK- Too bad Duval missed the XP range field goal to win the game. Unfreakin real. I was at the game and it was great until we missed that FG. We had all the momentum until that kick. Oh well.
Did that bear have any tattoos or other identifying marks?
How is she going to identify that bear. Are they going to have a bear line-up?
The 2002 Duval kick vs Florida barely cleared the linemen it was kicked so low.
I had to post just to get past 666.
Is Jay G. hosting the Roundtable on Monday?
Thanks, WERK... I despise that # also. Now 888, on the other hand, is a lovely number. Hi Monica!
I think Duval's intent with the kick at Florida was to give the snapper an enema.
that would be a suppository, Jet.
An enema is supposed to come back out.
I wonder which of my many mental disorders enjoys scrolling down on the main page to see 888 posts for Tuesday's blog entry.
There is no disorder that prompts me to scroll back up to yesterday's blog pic.
Definitely an enema, THT.
It would have been Tubby's greatest trick plays ... hide the ball in the snapper's rectum, then shoot it back out to the end on a reverse.
But Duval kicked it too high.
From cnn.com ...
Every Thanksgiving Day, Easton (Pa.) plays Phillipsburg (N.J.) in a high school football rivalry game, fighting for the "Fork of the Delaware" trophy.
In 1993, the teams tied 7-7 with no provision for overtime.
On Saturday, the two teams will settle the matter once and for all.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/04/24/gridiron.grudgematch/index.html
I'm not sure if many remember the 96 LSU game other than the Barn burning down, but Jarret Holmes kicked right into the center's ass on either a fg try or a point after. I can't remember. That was by far Holme's worst game ever. He was terrible all game long, but boy would I love to have him the last few years around here.
Talk about no drops. show me a receiver that would have taken that hand-off, and I'll show you a future proctologist.
I saw that Jet. They better have the ambulances there by the dozens. That is crazy.
Rectum? Durn near kill'd 'em.
I played my last high school game in 1993. I can only imagine if I tried to play a real game today how quickly my body would break down on me.
i remember Dameyune being hurt and the back-up QB...the name fails me. he throws an INT on a 2-point conversion that is run 100 yards back. Cooley, that's his name.
I last played in '00, but I am pretty sure I would be destroyed if I tried playing again even at this age. Heck, I still have knee and ankle problems from when I played as an 18 year old.
That being said, I would put the pads on again and play in a heartbeat. Screw the health ramifications, that would be awesome.
Cooley is correct Scottie. Good memory.
Monica..
Sorry I wasn't around. I would've recommended the Sugar Shack in Sweetwater. Typical small town meat & 3 type place, BBQ, good sweet tea. Nothing outstanding, but about the best you'll get there.
I won't go schizo, will I?
It's a distinct possibility.
Is it still schizophrenia when the voices in your head don't bother you?
I believe it was Jon Cooley...as far as I can remember it was pretty much his only action of that year.
Craig barely left the field in 96 & 97...which is why Leard had about 10 snaps of game action heading into 1998.
I'm so dense. I just "got" the Where Da Gold At reference.
I think the fact that it was daylight in that photo is what threw me.
i enjoyed beating uat in t-town in 2004. au's first half miscues kept the bammers thinking they were in it, then we just walked away with the game. priceless.
Hey, there's a great big picture of Aycock on the AU Rivals site.
Afternoon fellow Hotties.
Eddie - I remember the '96 LSU game not only for the barn burning but because that's the night some friends introduced me to Mrs. Gatiger. All things being equal, not a bad night at all for me.
Boxhead - I may be paranoid but that doesn't mean that everyone is NOT out to get me.
gatiger,
thanks for the scoop on the SC fires. i checked with my buddy and his house is A-OK. my trip is SO on.
also, we can put a HABOTN logo on pretty much anything you want. we'll open that up to moisture management stuff next time as well. i'll take care of ya.
scottie b be da man.
a habotn baseball cap would be sweet.
it's already in the works. we've been really busy with baseball stuff. once it calms down my embroidery guy is going to get me a sample made.
cool.
scottfromtucson..
We obviously think waaay too much alike. I have previously used both head shots from that album cover as avatars, not to mention our mutual Feldman fascination.
that is pending approval from JGT, of course....
So we're talking embroidery instead of screen-printing?
HABOTN cap ... ahhhhhh!
How about HABOTN towels to wave like Trooper?
always embroidery on caps. tis the way to go.
we should sell TROOPER TOWELS. what a wonderful idea!
Scottie..
Can you put an AU on the back of the hat, or would that be some sort of license infringement?
can't really do the AU. it's a licensing issue.
You have to pay Auburn to use logo.
Yeah, I figured.
You gots to pay da man. He always wants his coin.
If I was the man, I would agree. Since I am not...boo.
"He always wants his coin."
I thought we were done talking about Jay Jacobs and the UCLA game?
that is a bit wierd, ehyoutiger.
Jet, that story about the grudge match is AWESOME. I wish I could cover that.
Also, RIP Pontiac.
Scottie B.
I assume when you open up sales in the fall T-shirts will be available. If so I sure would like to have one.
Jay G ...
The draft resolution has been submitted to the sponsor, who has forwarded to the reference service that prepares it for introduction.
The big wheels take the bonuses but
They are shutting DETROIT DOWN
I miss my-top 1974 LeMans Sport Coupe, black with a white hard top and white leather seats.
JG, will you be liveblogging the MMA matches at the AU covered arena this weekend?
digger, i have a few LARGE shirts left over if that will work for you. if not, we'll definitely add those in the mix with the hoodies.
JGT, you like the hat idea?
Jay G., I've never heard you discuss mixed martial arts, you ever watch UFC?
Whatcha thinkin' Scottie B?
White hat with two-color Campfire logo?
Navy blue hat with orange Campfire?
ok, changed my avatar, ehyou. if this looks familiar, then we must be twin sons of different mothers.
Ya got me this time.
Monty Python?
i was think blue cap with orange logo. but white with orange/blue logo works, too.
it's a still pic from holy grail. the caption reads "are the jehovah witnesses gone yet?"
Jet - I remember that car.
Since it's conveniently happening a couple of miles from my house and since the gatiger family is out of town this weekend, I'll be taking in a Lacrosse match (or is it game) this weekend and AU is playing as the #1 Seed tomorrow. This could be fun.
For those interested, I'll be liveblogging the event by trying to describe what I see as it happens. So, if you happen to be sitting next to me you'll have that added benefit. Yet to be determined is whether or not Will will also be doing an Interpretive dance on the sidelines.
What if we built a large, wooden badger?
i used to have a pontiac fiero. good little car, but i remember having to change a headlight in it. somewhere around step 23 (no exaggeration) the instructions said "now find a coathanger or othere similar device"...
My brother had a Fiero around 1990 or so...probably the most uncomfortable riding car I've ever been in.
We tried to start a Fiero gang in high school. Like a motorcycle gang but way nerdier. it never amounted to much
i was thinking just the H.A.B.O.T.N. that would be easiest & stand out good.
i like the campfire logo idea. i'll have to see how much my guy would charge me to get that set up.
Harrison - I find that shocking that it wasn't taken seriously.
scottie b
at 5'8" 160lbs I probably need a medium.
You know how they run so if a large isn't too big I might could go that way.
I have a new thread up if you're interested.
well we also didn't have money to buy all of our friends a fiero. I think it would have been awesome.
