The Let's-Do-Spring-Practice-Again (LDSPA) team

WEDNESDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,196

Hey everyone. Nice work on yesterday's thread. We closed in on the HABOTN comment record before I succumbed to comment anxiety. They make stuff for that. I don't have any.

Since we spent (some) time yesterday talking about spring practice "winners," let's talk about some guys who may not have fond memories of the past month.
  • Barrett Trotter: Days after learning he wasn't a finalist for The Job, Trotter tears an ACL during a non-contact drill. That's a double whammy only Philip Pierre-Louis can fully appreciate. Trotter has a bright future, but that clearly won't begin until 2011. Surely the top 2009 quarterback will keep his job into 2010. Right?

  • Ryan Shoemaker: The team's only scholarship punter was hoping to get his job back. Clinton Durst punted better last season, became the starter and acted a fool in January by trying to strong-arm the coaching staff into giving him a scholarship. Shoemaker's window of opportunity slammed on his fingers, though, because Durst apparently was the better kicker again this spring. He also is still here despite not having a scholarship. The depth chart can change in a heartbeat, but Shoemaker clearly is losing relevance.

  • Mario Fannin: Did he perform poorly? No. Did he sulk about not being a tailback? No. Still, I don't think Fannin is thrilled about his (apparent) role on this team. He spent most of spring ball working at inside receiver and only moonlighted at tailback once Eric Smith was lost with a leg injury. Fannin was productive as a receiver at A-Day, so this story could have a happy ending. I just don't think this is what Fannin was hoping to see.

  • Chris Todd: Shoulder surgery limited him throughout spring practice. I never saw him throw a single pass. The senior became a bystander as Kodi Burns and Neil Caudle made meaningful first impressions with new offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. Can Todd get back in the race? It's possible. He's supposed to be "healthy" in time for summer workouts and will have a chance to prove himself in two-a-days. Is it too late? I think it is.

SIDE NOTE: As you know, I have no problem being critical of Auburn when I think Auburn makes mistakes. I don't think this UCLA thing is a big deal. ESPN tried to make a love connection there and the Auburn administration wasn't feeling it. So what? Auburn deserved all the hell it endured back in 1999 when it begged bought out its game against Florida State. This is a completely different deal. Plus, when did UCLA become so prestigious that no program in its right mind would turn down a home-and-home invitation?

Speaking of Draft, I saw one projection of Sanchez going 13th to Washington. I guess they are getting close to giving up on Jason.

On another note, Hulu at work is great. Re-watching the Family Guy right now is great with "A Bag of Weed" song blaring.

I'm not sure that the Redskins organization is competent at all in making personnel decisions. Campbell has played well, at times, for them, they should continue to improve the offensive line and get him some help. Instead they will waste more money on another QB prospect...I'm glad that's not my team.

i wonder if fannin's performance at a-day may have calmed any fears he has about how he will be used. he looked pretty good to me. it may be the fact the coaches already know he an play tailback. they just want to refine him as a pass catcher and route runner to make him doubly hard to defend. can a LB cover him on a pass route? no. can a DB tackle him without help? not usually. i kind of liken it to someone who has always had a automatic transmission has to learn out to drive stick in their new sports car.

One bad thing about dropping FSU from the schedule is the 2nd game of the series in 2000 would have been a really good game once we had Rudi...instead we played Northern Illinois.

No, he did catch the roadrunner, but he angered network executives by not going after Bugs Bunny the year before when they offered him up so the networks never aired the episode where he caught the Roadrunner. So you see my concern about networks.

Todd's situation isn't nearly as bleak as I thought it would be with him not competing in the spring. It is apparent that Malzahn hasn't found the QB he was looking for, so I do think Todd has a shot.

The thing is, before spring practice, Todd seemed to indicate he would be ready to throw some balls sometime in the spring. Apparently his arm isn't progressing as rapidly as he had hoped. A healthy Todd will have a good shot at being the starter. I am just not sure he will truly be healthy.

Davis arrested Sunday

21 April 2009 562 views No Comment

By Jason Smith
Sports Editor

Rising sophomore Enrique Davis was arrested at the Exchange early Sunday morning while at a party at Jerrell Powe’s apartment. Powe, a junior, received a citation for a noise violation.

According to the police report, officers were dispatched to the Exchange following a noise complaint where a Hummer was driving around the parking lot sounding its horn. Upon arrival, loud music was heard coming from the second floor of Powe’s apartment building.

The officer approached Powe and took his identification. On the way back to his patrol vehicle, a young black male, later identified as Enrique Davis, made a comment that the officer could not understand, the report said.

The officer requested Davis hand over his identification, but Davis looked at the officer with a “shunning face,” according to the report.

The report said the officer then requested Davis’ identification several more times and Davis started to walk towards the stairwell and gave the officer a “crazy face” when confronted about walking away. The officer grabbed Davis’ left elbow to stop him, but Davis pulled away from the officer, who then put him up against the stairwell and placed him in custody for disorderly conduct and failure to comply, the report said.

Once Officer Zachary White had placed Davis into the patrol car, he returned to address the noise violation concerning Powe. According to the report, while White wrote the citation for a noise violation, Powe said, “Zachary White, I got you. I’ll remember that.”

White asked if Powe would read the bottom of the citation and sign it to ensure he would show up in court, but Powe stated he could not read and would not sign, the report said.

The officer informed Powe that he did not need to sign and he would issue the citation regardless. Powe finally read the citation information and signed and was released afterwards.

Davis rushed for 244 yards last season and three touchdowns as a true freshman. Davis tallied 17 yards on five carries in the spring game. Davis is competing with Devin Thomas and Cordera Eason for the backup role to rising sophomore Brandon Bolden in the backfield.

Powe made his long awaited debut last season and finished the season with eight tackles, 3.5 for loss and one interception on the year.

Jason ...

For fans, it's bruised ego. We want to think we'll play "anyone anytime" even if there is a strategy not to do it.

For the media, it's a gimme column or segment on a talk show. Slamming someone is the easiest thing in the world for a member of the media to do. They practically have it written in their heads -- just change out the names and places.

Wow we are on the front page of ESPN CFB in late April.

To quote Navin Johnson in "The Jerk" when he saw his name in the phone book "I'm somebody now! Millions of people look at this book everyday! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity - your name in print - that makes people. I'm in print! Things are going to start happening to me now."

Well you know that Houston Nutt has officially arrived in Oxford when players develop attitude problems and the police are involved.

This happened on a daily basis at Arkansas.

Call me when we are on the front page of ESPN.com when we play Ark State, UTC, La Tech, etc.

The only way you get any attention those weeks is if you lose.

I have no idea what any of that means.

Actually 99% of the time I'm a pretty happy person...including right now.

I heard some news from PM that I won't repeat, but if anyone else wants to talk about, go ahead...yeah, that annoys me. What's the point, exactly?

The likelihood is that an Auburn-UCLA game doesn't make the front page of ESPN.com ... it makes the college football front.

What's the latest with the Yankees/Red Sox/whoever makes the front page.

Playing UCLA wouldn't change that unless Trooper strangled someone for a violation of team rules -- "No drops!"

Sean,

I was prevaricating my keester off. I purloin what I deem to be witty repartee from cinema, literature, and elsewhere and use it as my own -- without citation.

In other words, I "Jeff Burger" it.

I mean, plagiarize it.

Hank williams jr is a bama homer and a drunk, and a woman beater. Great american ? He also conveys the feelings of the redneck with laser like precision. Lucky to be hank sr's son, otherwise he'd be workin the extruder in the milk jug plant in demopolis.

Thats what pleases your ear? Ever check out any tony joe white? It's the country without all the "neckness". I like some country but none of it i listen to will ever get on the radio. HankIII has some good albums out. Course he's more prescribed to how his grandpa was, and sounds just like hank sr.

2:05 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Bin - you have some pretty definite opinions. I can only agree with the Bama part. As to some of the other points; he's been clean & sober for years, "woman beater" dismissed for lack of evidence, being "Jr." got him his start & but he's clearly established himself, he's an extremely talented musician (he can play every instrument on his stage very well), given his numerous awards & longevity as a performer I hardly think he'd have to work in a milk factory if he'd had a different father. I'm a fan & I'm far removed from a redneck.

Them's my thoughts.

Now, back to the UCLA discussion...
