Days to kickoff: 2

Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute is brought to you by the number:

2

HAPPY BEN OBOMANU DAY!!!

Ben Obomanu: Selma, Ala.; WR 2002-05; ACADEMIC ALL-SEC in 2003 & 2004; Auburn's leading receiver in 2005. Despite the drop against Ole Miss, Ben ranks second in career TD receptions with 18, one ahead of Karsten Bailey and 11 behind Terry Beasley. Ben ranks 8th in career receptions and 13th in career receiving yards.

Jay G. note: Best interview I've ever seen was Obomanu answering questions at the podium following the Ole Miss drop. He answered honestly. He answered for several minutes. Had YouTube been big then -- or if ESPN was doing around-the-clock college coverage like it does now -- Obomanu would be a household name far beyond Alabama.

HONORABLE MENTION

* Willie Gosha : Ft. Walton, Fla.; WR 1993-96; tied with Frank Sanders for most receptions (58) in one season; Willie holds AU single game record for receptions (17 vs. Arkansas) and is also tied for 3rd (10 vs. Army); his 222 receiving yards vs Arkansas is third highest total in Auburn history.

* Tim Carter: St. Petersburg, Fla.; WR 1998-2001; Auburn's leading receiver in 2001 and leading kickoff returner in 2000. He had a 100-yard kickoff return against LSU in 2000.

* Chuck Clanton: Pensacola, Fla.; CB 1980-82

* Otis Mounds: Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; TB 1991-94

* Cornelius Joseph Dennis "Neil" O'Donoghue: Dublin, Ireland; PK 1975-76; ALL-AMERICAN in 1976; Neil still holds Auburn record for longest FG: 57 yards, set in 1976 vs Tennessee (since matched by Philip Yost). The lanky Irishman, standing over 6-foot-6, was playing soccer at St. Bernard College in Cullman during the 1970s. When the school eliminated its soccer program, Neil transferred to Auburn and kicked the prolate spheroid for two years. He parlayed that experience into a nine-year NFL career. His first game at Auburn was only the third football game he'd ever played in.

I added this in the other thread, so sorry for the copy and paste...

My honorable mention goes to Corey Lewis.

Lewis was from Gallatin, TN and at Auburn from 89-92 I believe. He was in the 3 way battle with Stan White and Frank McIntosh for the starting QB job that White eventually won. He would be White's back up for a couple of years.

Corey lived in Ooltewah right outside of Chattanooga for a while after he graduated. Unfortunately leukemia took his life far too early about 10 years ago at age 31.

So to me it's Corey Lewis day!

Norm, my dad's a crazy guy. sometimes you sing all the verses and sometimes you change it up. but i agree, that 3rd verse could sometimes get neglected. very sad really.

Obomanu showed a lot of guts that day for not backing down from the questions after that huge drop. I have a ton of respect for him.

Two years later one of our coaches (David Gibbs) ran away from the same responsibility twice following games when he should have followed the example that Obomanu had already set.

Otis deserves more!! His recruitment by Auburn could be the biggest factor for our 93 season. His role in our program is still being felt today with Hot Carter. Pat took a chance on him and Otis my man didn't dissapoint.
Another great job THT!!

Tim Carter was FAH on that kick return vs LSU. I had brought a couple of friends with me to that game and one is a guy who never gets excited for anything...including 100 yard kick off returns. While the stadium was going crazy, he just stayed sitting in his seat. Everyone was questioning if he had a heartbeat.

A down Carter moment was his streaking down the sideline in Fayetteville in 2001 when that game was still somewhat close and he just fumbled the ball without being touched. No idea what just happened there.

Funny story about Obamanu and "The Drop." I had Real Estate class with him the season after "The Drop." It was the Thursday before the Ole Miss game. The teacher clearly didn't follow AU football and had no idea Obamanu had dropped the game winner last season. When class was over, someone mentioned to the teacher that it was Obamanu's bday. The teacher told him "Happy Birthday" and then said, "Don't drop any passes this weekend." You could have heard a pin drop and everyone looked like they wanted to stab the teacher in the face! It was AWESOME!

10:46 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Good Story, Shesaid.

I remember going to Opelika First Baptist the morning after the Ole Miss game, and Ben O. was there in service.

That left and indelible impression me; another Selma man making good at AU, and expressing his faith strongly.

BTW, I don't think that group of recievers on the 2004-2005 teams gets enough credit for how good those 04-05 offesnses were. Ben O. Devin A. Nix and Courtney Taylor are all still in the NFL in some capacity, (whereas Mike Williams and the Colbert kid washed out). You saw what happened to the offesne after they graduated.

That play occurred just moments after a Bama DB cold-cocked Borges on the sidelines. He was never the same.

BTW, I wonder if Ben ever got annoyed with Tuberville's complete inability to pronounce his last name correctly?

OH-buh-ma-NOO? He really had to work to come up with that pronunciaton.

As for Obamanu, you have to respect a kid that has that much maturity, similar to the way Kodi handled the QB situation.

A lot of kids could learn from Obamanu. I hope the coaches showed the team video of that, too. No, not just the drop against Ole Miss. Show how he handled it. There are some players that, if they make a mistake, more seem to just flow from it. Cox and INTs come to mind.

A player that puts a mistake behind him quickly is a valuable thing. Ever player makes mistakes. Few recover as quickly as Obamanu did, especially in such a highly publicized mistake.

I have a countdown clock on my iGoggle. It's hypnotizing me.

It also sort of freaks me out when you think about how quickly your life is slipping away. I need stimulants.

Monica,
How much are the wreaths? I loved them and my mother-in-law who lives in Auburn would love to have one for the season.

Blogger mytommyd said...

It's funny THT, a 5 minute break on the blog means its stopped in my mind now. Talk a bout paradigm shift

1:39 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I have a Colorado football shirt, but I can't get in it. Bought it in Boulder in 1975. BRIGHT GOLD, turned all my underwear pastel yellow the first time I washed it.

Now I know to separate that sort of stuff.

1:40 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

well, I know I should separate that stuff, but sometimes I just don't care what color something comes out of the laundry.

1:41 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Well, THT, we know what shuts down a blog. Talking about doing laundry! Although mine is all finished, packed and ready to go to AUBURN!

1:48 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Everyone must be getting geared up for the upcoming chatroll/campfire thingy. Or at lunch, or getting stimulus.

1. grocery store
2. give kids baths/medicine
3. laundry in washer
4. fire up grill
5. get in trouble for any unfinished home repairs i refuse to do on the start of the SEC season

6. cook hotdogs/brats
7. pop open cold beverage for SEC kick-off 2009

8. watch USC/NC State, then Oregon/BSU

9. crawl into bed around 1am ET

Blogger Quitstina said...

From what I understand, the new Auburn reality TV thing starts tomorrow, but it is on CSS, which I don't have. Someone needs to cover that and give us updates. By any chance, are they going to be able to vote people off?

2:14 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Ahhhhhh!!! Finebaum is on ESPN!!! My biggest fears are realized!!!

2:15 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Finebaum refers to RRod as dead man walking. That settles it. RRod will be around for a while.

Whew, Fbaum scared me in HD, he looks like a bag of mashed up a--holes

I forgot about one of the negatives of football season. For the next 3 months we will hear Tim Tebow mentioned around 100 times per day.

I just had a meal with the Pigeon Forge Tigers football team.

And I am surrounded by UT fans.

Odds of FSJ wearing Crimson: 100%

likin this new icon, feels good

2:54 PM

Normally I would not advocate the wearing of crimson, but that was pretty funny.

2:56 PM

Blogger Monica said...

Faker wearing his burgundy around those poor TN fans.

2:59 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Nope Monica, the man won't let me do anything fun like the chatroll/campfire thing. Right now I have a big Access Denied on my HABOTN front page where the campfire has started. Evidently it's not business appropriate.
