Days to kickoff: 3

Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute is brought to you by the number:

3

How many times do I have to remind you, do your school work first!

Three of our nominees received All-SEC honors during their Auburn careers, but only one was selected Academic All-SEC.

* Jorge Portela: Miami, Fla.; PK 1977-79; ALL-SEC in 1977; ACADEMIC ALL-SEC in 1978 & 1979 with a major in electrical engineering. Ranks in Auburn's Top 10 in career scoring and FGs made. His longest made FG: 52 yards. His best game came during his sophomore year when his five FGs, including a 51-yard kick, enabled Charlie Trotman to emerge a winner in his first start at quarterback. The Tigers entered that Oct 29, 1977, game against the Florida Gators as underdogs, sporting a 3-4 record. John Crane had started the first seven games. Coach Doug Barfield decided to play Trotman for a while, but Trotman had other ideas. He played well enough to stay in the entire game, completing nine of his 14 passes for 177 yards and a TD. Jorge Portela's five FGs provided the margin of victory as the Tigers downed the Gators, 29-14.

Jorge Portela is the son of Cuban refugees. Jorge's niece, Lindsay Portela, signed a LOI to compete in equestrian and recently arrived for her freshman year on the Plains.

HONORABLE MENTION

Gardner Jett: Atlanta, Ga.; PK 1970-72; ALL-SEC in 1970. His 42-yard FG with less than 10 minutes to play put Auburn on the board in the 1972 Iron Bowl. His 2nd PAT put Auburn ahead, 17-16. It was one of the most memorable days of my life, and I believe the FG was the longest of Mr. Jett's AU career to that point.

He nailed a 52-yard kick during the 1972 Gator Bowl as Auburn trounced the Colorado Buffaloes 24-3.

* Kevin Porter: Warner Robins, Ga.; CB 1984-87; ALL-SEC in 1987.

* Al Del Greco: Key Biscayne, Fla.; PK 1980-83; a solid kicker who won the 1984 Sugar Bowl with 3 FGs as Auburn defeated the Michigan Wolverines, 9-7. He ranks in Auburn's Top 10 in career scoring and FGs made. His longest FG at AU: 52 yards. He had even greater success in the NFL, playing 17 seasons with the Packers, Cardinals, and Oilers/Titans. Al spends a lot of his time on the radio these days, as does the man who overshadowed him in the SEC, Georgia's Kevin Butler.

* Rusty Williams - Moncks Corner, S.C.; RB 1996-99; led Auburn in rushing in 1996 and 1997, with a total of 716 yards during those two years.

A special delivery in my mailbox:

I’m hoping to interest you a feature on From Peanuts to the Pressbox. Written by sports broadcasting great Eli Gold, the book is the story of his climb from selling peanuts at Madison Square Garden to broadcasting for NASCAR, NHL and the Alabama Crimson Tide. It is full of the greatest moments in sports as he remembers them (and as he witnessed many of them.)

Are you all interested?

Eli is horrible! Why anybody thinks he is a good announcer for a southern football team, I have no idea. I know a lot of you don't care much for Rod Bramblett, but I'll bet you wouldn't trade him for Eli.

6:05 PM
Blogger AUTIGER78 said...

Eli lacks the ability to let the listener know the score. I rarely tune in to a UAT game but when I do all I want is the score and time left in the game. You can listen trough three station breaks before you get either.

6:10 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Gaines, you gonna be holding that sign? If so, you the man! You realize, though, that the few Bammers who can read are going to want to cause you bodily harm. Stay safe!

Btw, we've got to choose a catchy HABOTN moniker for you. Your current set-up is waaaaayyy too formal for this group. Oh yeah, and that's "catchy moniker", not "catty Monica". Hmmm, I think I'm living even more dangerously than you are with that sign.

6:20 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

You are dead-on with that, Wade. I don't remember the circumstances, but I was listening in on a UAT game sometime in the last couple of years and remember yelling at the radio, "Just tell me the score so I can quit listening to you!"

in high school my best friend and I would make bets during a boring class. We made our own spreads and bet 10 cent on each game. At end of regular season I was down 90 cents. After bowl games I was up 40 cents. The one I loved the most was taking Alabama plus 3 against ND. I certainly wanted to lose the bet rather than UA-T win, but I got the best of both worlds: ND 13 UAT 11.

I'll preface by apologizing for the long post.

What a day. We had our annual "Tailgate" employee luncheon today. This is our 3rd year to do it. You wouldn't believe all the red shirts. Why do you think there was more this year than the past 2? There were a handful of orange shirts. Of course there were those that were giving us a hard time. I told them that it was apparent that anyone could be an Alabama fan but Auburn fans were in a very elite group.

Then I had to take my daughter to the doctor because she is experiencing some flu-like symptoms, and we found out one of her sorority sisters tested positive for the Swine Flu. My daughter tested negative for Flu A and B, but because of her low WBC count which is indicative of a virus, he is testing her for the swine flu and has quarantined her to the house for 2 days until we can recheck her blood. She has been sick as a dog since we got home. She was coming to the game with me. She is not happy. She is on Tamiflu, so hopefully her symptoms will get better soon.

Norm - do we have to get permission, first?

7:47 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

As part of the reinstatement request, the institution required the student-athletes to make repayment of the value of the impermissible benefits to charity.

7:48 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

they received impermissible benefits but no rules were violated? does that make sense?

7:49 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Of course it does THT...

They were on a purely humanitarian trip.

7:51 PM
Blogger Storm said...

How much do they have to pay back?

7:51 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

It just makes me shake my head THT.

7:52 PM
Blogger Norm said...

THT - I don't know that we do. I think we can make it happen. There's apparently not much happening to warrant JGT putting a new thread up to thwart my quest here. I want to be part of 3 flips on a single thread.

7:52 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

I think if it is less than $100 they can pay it back without missing games.

I could be wrong though.

7:52 PM
Blogger Storm said...

whats the record for longest thread

7:53 PM
Blogger Norm said...

I feel pretty confident that if you or I were to try and make that same trip, our cost would be more than $100.

7:53 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Sure but we wouldn't be getting the star player discount.

7:54 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Valid point. I wouldn't even get the Scout team discount.

Norm ...food alone would run that

I only heard minimal references to it on HABOTN, so I don't know the story. But it sounds like something that will fuel me UA-T hate. No offense, dear HABOTN friend.

7:55 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

me hate? No, I'm not a leprechaun.

Let's try "my hate"

7:56 PM
Blogger Norm said...

I've never been on a fishing charter like that one, but I'd like it to happen. I'll pay $100.

7:58 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Norm, I think it's gonna happen. And we're not going to make you bear the burden alone. That sounds vulgar. Let's try, we're not going to let you shoulder the burden alone.

7:59 PM
Blogger Storm said...

norm having another count down?

8:00 PM
Blogger Norm said...

THT - thanks. I'm prepared to go solo if I have to, but assistance is always appreciated.

8:01 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Storm, I have no idea. There are rumors of a 1000+ post thread last year. Perhaps a ROF Hottie can verify.

THT & Storm, I'm pretty sure we had a 1K post thread within the last several months. Maybe early this year? I believe Michael will remember.

I do remember Jay used to write posts simply entitled "Overflow for Comments" if we went over 200.

It would reaaaalllly bother him.

8:05 PM
Blogger Storm said...

Where is Jay tonight?
He will show up at 599 to let us know we have a new thread

8:05 PM
Blogger Norm said...

THT - see, that's where you're mistaken. While you and I share a timezone, I don't share your sleep (or lack of) habits. If I can help it that is. While I may be awake at 11:30 eastern, I don't expect to be sitting here.

8:05 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

FSJ - I'll check the list and see.

Ummmm, can't find him there. Not sure what happened.

8:06 PM

That's probably what he's doing. That new nonsense thread is just around the bend.
