Arkansas 44, Auburn 23

Hey everyone. I'll be posting some relevant stats, quotes and information here as the afternoon progresses.

  • Gene Chizik said LB Eltoro Freeman is on the team, but didn't make the trip because of "personal issues."

  • Onterio McCalebb on what the loss means: ``You're going to see a whole different team from what you've seen. We're going to go out there and practice hard. We're not going to be not focused in practice. We're going to come out ever hard because of this loss right here.

  • Adam Herring on what happened: ``Coming out of halftime, we knew we were still in it. We knew what our offense would be capable of. We didn't put it together as a team today. We just didn't get the breaks."

  • Ted Roof on front-line substitutions: ``We rotated and played a lot of people. That's going to help us develop some depth. We need to do that and we're going to continue to do that. When we do sub, the guys who come into the ball game have to get it done for us."

  • Gus Malzahn on what he told players at halftime: ``We just started talking about that there's nothing they were surprising us with. It was just a matter of executing. We kind of shot ourselves in the foot early with some execution, some penalties and some drops, some overthrows -- just some things that we hadn't done all year up to this point."

  • UPDATE: I'm headed back to Tulsa. Take care.

We should all pray for Arky WR Joe Adams. He didn't play today, and after the game Petrino said it was because Adams had a stroke earlier in the week.

A stroke? That is serious stuff. I hope the kid is ok.

If I am not mistaken, the last time Arkansas had the ball, the entire defense was backups. They did not play that bad IMO. That will help with our depth problems by getting backups some game time experience.

Auburn fans are gonna have to face some facts. We have a very good chance to win every game we play. Deal with it.

Norm..you're right about the lack of depth on D....and we haven't have serious D or OL injuries yet.

We should win at least 2 more games and quite possibly could sneak in another win.

The offense has to keep our D off the field.

I think we have to play these backups. We've got to develop that young talent. We will learn from this.

I can't figure out how Ole Nutt has stopped Julio in the endzone, but they have. Twice it looked like he had the catch and the Ole Nutt DBs came through.

3:57 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

We have done well rotating defensive linemen and the secondary. The linebackers are just in a poor situation, especially without Eltoro. I believe both Wade Christopher and Chris Humphries are walkons and both have played.

Blogger Kathy said...

Good gracious why all the negativity? We knew this was a young team with serious depth issues. I'm pleasantly surprised at 5-1. I love how our offense has improved so much from last year. I'll be glad when we can develop the backups plus more players on defense, so that we can play some other folks besides walk ons on Special Team.

4:20 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Both fumbles cost us....
Tate's maybe even more.

Arky scored off of each turnover. Tate's Fumble was going in for an AU score, so that could be considered a 14 point swing.

4:20 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

So if you think about it.

Ben scores instead of fumbles.
Todd doesn't miss a wide open Zachery
And we drive off of Wario's return.
Todd doesn't fumble when sacked.

Different game.

Experience will help in the long run.

4:21 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I just think of Chizik pulling a Vince Lombardi

"What the hell is going on out here!"

4:22 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Without that 14 point swing, we would have been down by 3.... It is a completely different ball game if that is the case.

But, he acted like a senior leader should and came back and played hard to help his team the best he could.

4:22 PM
Blogger wtc said...

While running this morning, I told my running that I felt AU could win but if they went down 14-0, they could nto make it back against Arky. We allowed Mallet to look like an All-American today.

4:32 PM
Blogger Miller said...

We got zero pressure on him. He had all day to throw. The 1 or 2 times that we blitzed we made him move... The 1 or 2 times that the line stunted or twisted we made him move out the pocket and disrupted his rhythm...

I don't understand why we did that so little. Then again, we haven't done much of those type of things all year.

4:34 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Problems I saw:
Thorpe needs to turn to the ball more.

AU needs to learn to tackle. How many times are theyg oing to bump the guy and not wrap up?

ST are PITIFUL. They had guy wrapped up on the kickoff and no one went to tackle him.

How can Arky rush 3 and get an EASY sack?

4:34 PM

or not.

4:35 PM
Blogger wtc said...

You can beat AU by running TE across the middle underneath the LBs. We either hold them or do not cover them.

I am venting now, but only because I was disappointed in the lack whatever it was out there today. Hopefully we don't play another early game this year.

4:37 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Be careful venting frustrations... you'll be accused of being a bad person and a bammer...
You're supposed to be cheery and give the cliche made famous by $puat and say that the better team didn't win today...

4:40 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Fannin is another one that I can not understand. How many passes is he going to drop and we still go to him. He does not catch that screen pass very well. And when he did, he was hit behind the line.

Not only did Mallet look good, we made the WORST defense in the SEC look good most of the game.

4:40 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Fannin is one of those guys who is erratic. Earlier in the season he had a lot of catches. He just isn't consistent.

4:43 PM
Blogger wtc said...

The better team today did win today. I still have faith in AU and the staff, but AU has only a few players. Everyone else fills out a jersey. The way some of those tackle they ought to buy a ticket to the game. They could at least see the game better.

4:43 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Everyone was running slow and sloppy routes today.

4:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I was amazed that Arkansas was able to rush 3 and get pressure too. I am wondering if we are getting a bit warn out.

4:44 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Well he needs to get consistent. Playmakers are consistent.

4:45 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Arkansas definitely deserve to win today. We made too many mistakes and their defense played much better than I ever anticipated.

4:45 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I would think that also, except it was early in the game when that crap started happening.

4:45 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't really know what to think of Fannin. At times he looks like the next Ronnie Brown. At other times he has issues. He has had more than enough experience to get over some of this stuff. In a way it reminds me of Brandon Cox, if he made a few mistakes early, you could count on more coming.

4:47 PM
Blogger Miller said...

I think it's easy to see that our offense relies heavily on the pace. When we slow down the pace and run he meerkat, the o-line has trouble holding their blocks and receivers are slower off the line... When we speed up our O-line opens holes, protects better and the WRs get off the ball quicker and get open...

4:47 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Hopefully we come out running the ball next week and RB's hold on to the ball. We read so much about how bad their secondary was that Gus apparently wanted to exploit it instead of sticking to our bread and butter. Oh well. Stll in Gus we Trust, but maybe run the ball a bit more from the beginning.

4:47 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I will admit it wasn't AU's day. A couple of bad penalties, a couple of turnovers will put a team in a bad spot. When you are a player, you overcome those things or better yet, you do not put yourself in that position.

I think we regressed today. I really do.

4:47 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am also curious why we seem to be running less motion the last couple of games. Early in the season we seemed to have someone moving on every play. Now, we are doing it far less.

4:48 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I was proud of how Tate responded after his fumble, but that is his second fumble in the red zone in two games.

4:49 PM
Blogger wtc said...

arky stopped him last year. Surprised he didn't make adjustments to that. Surely he knew they would be ready for whatever he did at Tulsa.

I'm still on the bus also, but not as relaxed about it as I once was.

4:50 PM
Blogger Miller said...

I love Malzahn... but he needs to figure something out so that we can score early rather than waiting a drive or 2 to figure out their defensive looks.

We need to score first, and take some of the pressure off of the D. From here on out, we cannot afford to get down early and expect to come back. We especially can't afford to get down by a couple of scores early. It seems to have become a trend though...

4:50 PM
Blogger wtc said...

You are correct steve, AU has run much less motion than in the previous 4 games. FAH has not played nearly as much either. Tate is fine and they found 1 play that worked and ran it for a TD and a bunch of yards, but I think FAH gives us a better chance than Fannin at this point. I really do.

4:52 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I thought we would win 6 games this year, so I'm not going to complain. We could win two or three more.

I think our weakest link is Boulware. Also, I am not convinced Roof can get it done either. Depth and talent a year from now may change my mind on that.

In other areas, we will be just fine. I am curious about how SEC defenses will handle Malzahn next year after a year to adjust to his schemes.

Overall, I think we have a bright future.

4:53 PM
Blogger Miller said...

The move away from motion is curious... It was working... working well. Why have we gone away from it?

I think we took a few steps backwards today... that is what upsets me.
With a young/inexperienced team, you need to take a step forward every week... even if it is a baby step.

4:54 PM
Blogger wtc said...

AU can't afford to let the other team return kicks back for 40-50 yards and then return our own for 25.
Maybe Boulware can watch film of the other team to see what they are doing and implement that on our team becaus ewhat he is doing is not working AT ALL.

4:54 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Maybe this will open up their eyes to the fact they can and will get beat with that kind of effort. I hope so.
I will be in the stands next weekend. Think I am meeting someone's parents that day.

4:56 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

It's too early to tell on Boulware and Roof. Not excusing all they've done, but Boulware really has his hands tied. In this day and age, for the best teams in the nation, special teams is a unit that is filled with first teamers from both sides of the ball. Boulware doesn't have that luxury right now. He's playing scrubs instead of starters.

4:56 PM
Blogger Miller said...

The D is very thin... I get that. But, we're almost playing scared and soft, trying not to get somebody hurt rather than playing our style defense.

At least I hope this soft style is not our new style of defense.

4:57 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The slower pace didn't bother me against UT because I understood they were trying to rest our defense. I didn't understand it against Arkansas. I expected us to be all over them.

I thought we would come back in the second half, but I figured it was over when Tate fumbled.

A lot of this is likely due to our youth, lack of depth, and inexperience.

I still love this team. As long as we go bowling, I consider this season a success.

4:57 PM
Blogger wtc said...

The trouble for AU is that a national game showed we are pretenders right now. I thought we were over rated, but now the country will be in agreement. Still looking for 8-9 wins.

4:57 PM
Blogger Miller said...

wtc,
Yes, they will be there. I am hoping to find a ticket and get down there as well.

4:58 PM

I am not really sold on Boulware or Roof either, but they have to be given time. It is kind of like the guy screaming at Jacobs at the airport over the Chizik hiring. It was way to premature.

4:58 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

wtc, right on your comment about Thorpe earlier. The guy puts himself in great position to make a play - his coverage is watertight - but like Gerraud Powers and Baton Rouge 07, you gotta turn around make a play. As soon as he starts doing that, he'll be a Carlos Rogers calibre corner.

5:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, I think Thorpe has huge potential. He will likely play on Sundays. McFadden is good, but I don't see as much potential in him.

5:01 PM
Blogger Miller said...

The problem is... it is some of our older players making the biggest mistakes. Tate/Fannin with the fumble, McCain had a bad day today, Pugh was missing blocks, Etheridge missed some tackles and took poor angles...

5:01 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

They weren't the reason we lost, but how bad were a couple of those PI calls on us in the first half?

5:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The penalties early are really what killed us. It wasn't one thing that killed us. We killed ourselves in many ways.

5:02 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Some of the penalties were bogus, but some were legit and just bad moves, like the facemask out of bounds. That was stupid.

5:03 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Turnover Ole Miss. Nevermind about the comeback, but their defense is playing strong considering how bad their offense has been. Jevan Snead...he's the new Crompton.

5:03 PM
Blogger Miller said...

If I remember correctly, Roof doesn't want his corners turning to the ball. He wants them playing the WR.

5:03 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Agreed Steve, I wasn't excusing the other penalties. They were bad penalties and we lose the game regardless, but I thought those were some terrible PI calls.

Look what Arkansas did. They aren't great on defense but they throw the sink at you and they play well in coverage.

We should be able to muster that at least I would think.

Our defense can't lift the sink, much less throw it. And it is not because they were tired. They were bad from the start.

5:15 PM

I read somewhere that one of the Arkansas returners is one of the best in the nation. I think it was the guy returning punts, but I don't remember exactly. I knew we would have some issues there.

5:20 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I though the defense did a decent job of keeping us in the game for the first quarter and a half, but the offense refused to get a first down, or when they did, they almost threw a pick in the process. The dam busted at 13-0 and Fannin's fumble, but they at least didn't give and fought to the end.

5:20 PM

I love it. McClean(stud) intercepts, runs to the sideine and runs away from teammates wanting to chest bump. McClean knows that he is just doing his job and will save chest bumps for the end of the game.

He acts like he's been there before.

The second string DL is Nosa Eguae, Dee Ford, Nick Fairly and Derrik Lykes. All freshmen or Juco Sophs.

The LB depth is even more horrible.

Having an off game is expected.

Blogger Miller said...

Maybe Kentucky if their QB is out... it'll be a fight. But, we don't get pressure on the QB, we don't contain well in run D, we miss tackles, and our STs consistently give the opposing teams a short field.
Our offense is pretty good, but we cannot rely on it too heavily. That is what it seemed like we tried to do today.

Also, I am not going to name names, but there are a person or two on our defense that make absolutely no positive plays over the course of the game.If we have no depth at these positions, then just play a defense that does not utilize said positions. These player(s) are that bad. That is all.

I never said we'd beat UGA b/c UT beat them. I would have cited the fact had they done it against Vandy. Not saying we'll win that one either, but I think we can. We'll beat more than just Furman the rest of the way.

We should beat UGA. Not because UT beat them, because we are better.

7, 8, or 9 wins isn't a bad season for us...at all. Maybe I'd be a little disappointd with 7 after starting 5-0, but it wouldn't really chap my a$$ that bad.

Ebro...I was just messin' around with the UGA win logic.

I'm amused at fans that think they got our season figgered out, come to "expect" and are then furious when they realize they're wrong.

How often has ANY fan figgered out a CFB season?...

The Doc I heard interviewed this am said that in order for Lord Tebow to be cleared for practice, he would have to be well enough to be cleared for the game.

Ol Miss has played good D gainst Bama. That Bama D is scary and deep.

Bama let up on Ky last week

5:44 PM

Agreed Hoopie, but I also think Ole Miss's offense is not very good.

5:45 PM
Blogger michael said...

I think Arkansas and Auburn were evenly matched. Everything just went wrong for AU today.

Quite reminiscent of 2006... in which we won 11 games. I still think Auburn has a good shot in the remaining games except for bama. But with this defense, an off day is deadly. And for three quarters, we were really off.

This game looks like the Iron Bowl would have last year had it been played in J-H.

5:46 PM

EBro..that may be the case. The Arky O looked awful against Bama and has put up 40+ against everyone else.

5:47 PM

Well, we're only one game better than last year after six games. What does it all mean?

Coincidence? Probably.

It's still great to be an Auburn Tiger. We were never going to be perfect. Let's bounce back against Kentucky.

Agree there Hoopie. Bama looks great on defense, I just think Ole Miss might be playing as bad as anybody on offense right now not named Vanderbilt. The difference is they havfe the talent too eventually click. Hopefully that happens some time after Halloween.

Well said Eddie. Let's clock and claw the Cats next week.

I don't see Ole Miss offense struggling against Auburn. Heck I don't see anyone struggling against Auburn's D.

I expect Snead to put a recliner in the pocket. It's not like we're gonna rush or anything.

The future is dependent on our health. Every team has a bad day. We had one. Great ones overcome it. But we're not great. I never thought we were. But we can be good. None of us likes to lose, but yappin' at coaches is silly right now. I fussed about Tubs and his staff last year, but this is different I like this team and I like this staff.

Drinking heavily since 10 AM does have it's consequences, but pessimism is not one of them.

6:35 PM
Blogger coosa said...

This game kinda reminded me of a basketball team that relies on making 3 pointers to win - sometimes the shots just won't go down. And none of our shots would go down today. Looks to me like our offense depends on timing to click, and the timing just wasn't there.

Its not the end of the season; if we had lost like this to WV it might be the end of the season, but this team has enough confidence and talent on offense to bounce back at this point.

But I'd say the 10-2 scenario is likely gone; we had to start 7-0 for it to be in play. I still expect us to win at least 8. Gotta win next week or the odds of that start to go down. Beat KY, and we will beat at least one of the other opponents + Furman.

All in all, its just a football game. Don't let it ruin your day. War Eagle to all.

Coosa ...

Your optimism has been admirable. Hence my renaming it as Coosa-Aid. We are a team -- thin as a supermodel -- that has little margin for error. We made way too many errors.

6:51 PM
Blogger Craig Miller said...

Haven't read everyone else's opinions. I go back to the "tuberville issues" we keep recruiting 2 start guys we can "mold" into "our type" of guy. F THAT. I want big Bad Arses who don't get pushed around. We couldn't get a rush with 4 guys all day. Its sad. Our fronts aren't dominating and it sucks to look over at Bammer and see they have that. We all knew this was coming. But i'm giving it time. Gonna stick with my team.

7:04 PM

I was wrong about your game today. I don't mind fessing up. Congratulations.

7:05 PM
Blogger michael said...

I'm with Coosa. I think Georgia, Ole Miss, LSU, Auburn, and Arkansas are all in about the same class. A lot of the remaining schedule will depend on how the ball bounces, but 8 wins isn't crazy at all. That is just 2 wins out of Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss and LSU. We could get get smoked from here on out, but I have faith that the offense today is the anomaly that will happen from time to time and not the norm. The defense is what we expected it would be against Arkansas.

I'll say this here: Arkansas is not going to win the SEC West. Call me delusional, but I don't think it is out of the question that we will still be playing Alabama for the SEC West title at the end of the year. We could also lose next week to Kentucky. 2009 Auburn Tigers! DWWD!

7:06 PM
Blogger Jim in Scranton said...

Does anyone else that watched the game on ESPN think that there is something wrong with Bob Greise? He used to be one the best around, but he made some bizzare mistakes like saying Arizona instead of Arkansas. He also made the astute observation when it was 27-3 that the Ark. OC was doing a better job than Malzahn.

It may be about time for ESPN to send him to the same place they sent Mike Gottfried.

CraigM.....we had 4stars aplenty on that field today. We just don't have seasoned backups. 3 JRs from last year's defense are playing pro now and we had to dismiss 4 more promising sophomores off the team this summer. If you haven't noticed we're paper thin.

The only thing that has to do with xCTT would be if we wanted to speculate how many of those guys would still be playing here now if xCTT was still here. That ain't productive, so I won't go there.

Don't blame the present on the past....it reeks of whiny, low self-esteem.

7:14 PM
Blogger Jim in Scranton said...

So what I have learned today is that those of us who are trying to find answers to why AU is in this situation with depth/talent issues means we are whiny and fair-weathered.

Please.

7:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Agreed Hoopie. Blaming is pointless and frankly kind of silly. We have a good team. We have some weaknesses. But this team has overachieved, so I am not going to bash our own team, coaches, previous coaches, previous players, etc.... It is pointless, childish, and against the Auburn Creed.

7:30 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jim, what in the world do you hope to accomplish by blaming?

7:31 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

I guess you can call me whiny, but you can't call me fair-weathered. I've been an Auburn fan while I was in the womb, which was a very, very long time ago!

7:32 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It really is pretty simple. Do what is best for Auburn. If trashing players, coaches, ex-players, ex-coaches, administration, or whatever is something you feel will help Auburn and represent the university in a positive light, then that is what you should do.

7:35 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

I've given a lot of my hard-earned money to Auburn, and I'll defend her until the day I die. I suffered through all the long lean Alabama/Auburn games in Legion Field. I know how to lose. That being said,
I'm enjoying the games again (last year was horrendous), and I'm looking forward to next week. Football in Auburn is tremendous. War Eagle! Tomorrow the skies will be orange and blue.

7:36 PM
Blogger HamTiger said...

ok, looks like we need a change of subject... Colt McCoy is good, LSU and FL both have a ton of speed and Tim Tebow is a large individual. Discuss amongst yourselves.

7:36 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

I've seen a lot of teams play some good defense today. Alabama is loaded. LSU is quick. I've got tickets to the LSU game and it looks like I'll be sitting way up high. Guess I'll take those binoculars.

7:37 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

There is a huge difference between asking questions and whining.

Discuss shortcomings and provide valid info to support, leave the whiny generalities to the Bama fans.

Whiny Generalities examples = Coaching, playcalling, came out flat, early playing time, poor recruiting, effort, etc.

Ex: If you were to say that Todd had his most inaccurate day, but that in part because he got the most pressure of the season..that would be fair.

Au is the same team that beat UT, which beat UGA, which beat Arky.
