Let the watching begin

Hey everyone. Hope you're having a great SUMMER SOLSTICE. It's the longest day of the year, so make the most of it!

I'm just here to pass along some information about two Auburn football players.

Linebacker Craig Stevens and offensive tackle Lee Ziemba have been named to award watch lists. It's a rite of passage for college seniors. These two players are, in my opinion, deserving.

Stevens has caught the attention of people who administrate the Nagurski Trophy. The senior-to-be was credited with 90 tackles last season. He also was one of the four players who participated in all 115 snaps of the Outback Bowl. They don't come tougher than that.

Ziemba is up for the Outland Trophy, which goes to the nation's top lineman -- on offense or defense. The Arkansas native is tall, strong, durable and generally good. What else can I say?

I'm glad. I know you cover Auburn because it is your job (and hopefully you love her a little) but I am glad you are getting to do the World Cup blog since it is something you love. It's like a little gift for a job well done.

Okay so if Lee gets the Outland award, will they actually announce it the day before?

And I apologize for that, it's awesome that they're looking at him for that award. But sometimes it's just easy.

By the way if Lee DOES get the Outland Trophy, Auburn's looking at an SEC championship in my opinion.

6:46 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Okay on second thought, maybe its gonna take a little more than Lee winning the Outland.

But if Lee wins the Outland, Craig wins the Nagurski, and Cam wins the Heisman. I think we'd probably be getting there.

Just wondering though, if this catches on with other SEC teams, how do you defend against it? Do you play it like you would a triple option or whatever it is that Ga Tech does? is there such a thing as man to man? Just wondering.

DaRick Rogers(#2 WR recruit) from Calhoun,Ga. is the similar to Hulio. Last season against Cartersville he loafed 99% of the game ..never blocked downfield ...but then woke up and made 2 incredible 4th qtr catch/runs to win the game. If he had blocked earlier in the game, those 4th qtr heroics wouldn't have been needed.

No heart.

the problem was no one spun his helmet around on him during the last ditch drive. wholio does seem like a big creampuff if things don't go his way. his circumstances remind me a lot of jamarcus russell. bmoc in high school, bmoc in college. he can get away on pure ability at those levels. wait until an nfl safety hits him like the best college linebacker he's ever seen. then wait until an nfl lb hits him. i also doubt he's going to be up for the nfl rookie treatment of carrying the bags and going to get the beer and pizza at 1 am either.

Hoops...Living in the Noog and keeping up with area high school football (Calhoun qualifies as part of our regional coverage), I kept up with Rogers a bit, and remember watching a little bit of him in the state title game and thinking the same thing. He looked disinterested.

Maybe that's common for a lot of high school players who are heading to big programs, though. I wouldn't know. Jacquez Smith from my alma mata (Ooltewah) was the first big time recruit from my old high school to go somewhere substantial (Tennessee). He brought it during the regular season, but then got suspended during the first round of the playoffs and we lost.

Bottom line. Other than him, I don't have a lot of experience with keeping up with a big time recruit and what he's doing game by game

Dyer is also not going to be in the same offense Bryce Brown was asked to produce.

My goodness, I just had a quick thought about all the horses that we could have running in that offense: That veteran O line, a no drop receiving corps, a giant agile QB, and a set of change of pace backs from power to quick and speedy all in at the same time. If Gus can get them to run at the speed he wants, this could be an incredible thing to watch.

The Incredible is not the EVO, though, so it'd be a little harder for me to do give up the keyboard for it, but I'd still give it a look. Jet, are you concerned about fannin's durability? I sure am. I harken back to the bowl game when his shoulder got whacked. I keep seeing him trying in vain to make a catch with one arm because he seemed unable to lift the arm. Love the effort, but it seems like he had shoulder problems for a while. That (coupled with the Tate factor) seemed to be part of the reasoning for moving him him out to space last year. A few good SEC whacks to that shoulder again and do we have a one armed RB again?

Baldy ...

My concerns:

1. Ball security
2. Durability

I want our punt and KO coverage to rank in top 3 in conference, and no TOs on our kick return teams.

Am I asking too much?

Eddie, Hoopie made my point for me. Julio has all of the potential in the world. That meant something when he was coming out of HS but after two yrs in college he hasn't produced. I don't think the guy has good hands, I think he is complaining crybaby and I think he goes through the motions a lot. Basically he is the next T.O. Now would I take a chance on him, yes, but I would like to have some others before him. The media has fallen all over him and made him the most hyped player in college football.

I know this article is from Bleacher Report so take it how you want. I thought it was a good list though and had good arguments.

Ebro ..after watching Rogers in that HS game, I asked around about him. My real estate partners and some other acquaintances are from Calhoun and all agreed that it was common knowledge that Rogers was a slacker.

The rest of the story:

Rogers changed from a UGA commit to UT on NSD because his HS QB committed to UT and that Qb's family could continue to take care of Rogers and keep him out of trouble. That story has about 80% positive and 20% negative associated with it. Things were arranged prior to the UT commit, so that the NCAA wouldn't have a case or UT have knowledge, but the kid is now comfortable.

Are you gonna try to make it through the day tomorrow ignorant of the US score? If so, that's a true challenge indeed.

Blogger Jet said...

It's no biggie, ehyou, I go through everyday ignorant.

Oh, ignorant of the US soccer score. Nevermind.

TommyD ...

The yardage is ... the fumbles aren't.

I know of three from the South Florida game, one from the Arkansas game last year and at least four other occasions when he fumbled the ball out of bounds or to a teammate.

He's explosive, but like explosives, he's volatile.

CBS says Fannin has 8 fumbles in his career, 5 lost.

4 fumbles in '07 (3 lost), 1 fumble in '08 (1 lost) and 3 in '09 (1 lost).

His touches will go up significantly this year though.

Okay, for a second I thought I was going crazy. It's interesting that ESPN of all folks got that wrong. If I really cared enough they probably show that Ingram carried the ball for 3000yds last year and thats how he got his trophy.

Thanks for checking on that gang

You know what song I absolutely hate? "Poetry Man" by Phoebe Snow.

Wait, that's not a complete list by any stretch. Also hated from that same general time period "Lovin' You" by Minnie Riperton.

There are others but those are a couple of longstanding entries on the list.

Was at Sandestin last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Played in a scramble Friday at the Links. It was ungodly hot and humid for the first six holes, but the cloud cover moved in and the cart chicas kept us plied with Powerade and water.

Listen to Hoopie, Miller, he's pre-med.

ehyou...To answer your question from earlier:

No. I don't plan on trying to make it through the day tomorrow without finding out the US score. I'd love to take off of work and watch, but I can't really afford to tomorrow. And I don't really want to try and mess with avoiding the score all day, but more than that, I want to know what is happening with the US while it is happening.

So I'll be keeping up with that one live. If it turns out how I hope it will, I'll still watch it on my DVR when I get home and celebrate as though I'm seeing it for the first time.
