Yes...there is indeed a thing called the huddle!!!!!! Do you really think Tubs won't have a quick trigger to pull Burns if he is not performing badly or throws a pic?

I liked that the stuck with Todd for a while, but it is obvious that his arm was getting worse. It is also very apparent that Todd will not be back in until his arm improves. That makes sense.

I like the idea of Kodi knowing he is the starter, but I do want to see us develop a backup QB. It is something that Auburn has always failed to do and it results in rebuilding years like this. I don't see Todd in the picture again anytime soon. Caudle makes the most sense, but there has to be a backup with some experience.

I am trying to avoid "homerisms", but I actually have a pretty good feeling about things for some reason.

Question for the group: I watched a good bit of football this weekend. I can't remember seeing a single team in a huddle. If I did, I can't recall it. Did I overlook it?

First of all, Kodi is a smart kid...you can see it in his eyes and hear it when he speaks. As the one who had paid his dues behind Brandon and been in there when the game was on the line, he should have been the "starter" and "finisher" from day one. What is so odd, is that Tubbs insisted in the spring that there would be a clear-cut starter come opening day. Who knows what could have been had the Todd project been scrapped in the summer or what the "always looking over his shoulder" stategy that was employed instead has done to Kodi's maturity and confidence? Only time will tell. The coaches certainly didn't do him or us any favors by making him split time with an obviously lesser physically gifted QB. He may never pan out, but I for one would have liked for him to have been given a better shot early on at the job he did more to earn.

I'm a homer too. Perhaps this comes from a place of peace on Sunday night, unlike the last 2 weeks- -but I'm rooting for these kids. They seem optimistic and eager to do well. So what if they are being coached by folks that can't get out of their way.

Just to be totally off topic, Texas looks like the best team in college football. I can't remember a team simply destroying two other top ten teams in back to back weeks.

Then I remember the last two seasons and the best team in the world then, Ohio State. I am wondering if anyone in the SEC can take down Texas. Bama has looked like they could beat anyone at times, but they have also looked like they could loose to anyone at times.

For now, Texas looks to be at an entirely different level than any other team I have seen play. Anyone wanna fight about it?

I will not fight you. Seems like every "good" team this year followed up a big win with a stinker. USC after Ohio State, UAT should have lost to Tulane and KU after beating Clemson and UGA. there are probably other examples. UT-A appears to be good enough that they haven't suffered let downs, despite the stage. This will only make Muschamp's star burn brighter, though.

If Todd hadn't been the starter, I think we would have lost at least two more games. Against Arkansas he was terrible. Against Vandy, he wasn't much better. Early on, he looked pretty good, although with a weak arm. The problems in the early games wasn't the QB, it was primarily penalties. Ziemba could go to the bathroom without getting flagged for 5 yards,

8:15 PM
Blogger WDEwg said...

No that UF figured out how to have a running game with all those track stars. LSU's offense is a grease fire, but their D is pretty solid- -and UF made them look bad.

I'm unfortunately starting to put all my rooting into UF humiliating UAT in Atlanta, as it appears that will be the matchup.

I didn't notice many penalties (certainly not offensive) against Arky. Did I miss something? Maybe we at least got that corrected.

8:16 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- Our big problem is that we didn't name a starter earlier in Fall camp and get that guy all the reps, whoever it was going to be. They needed the reps and the confidence. Instead, we have had 2 QB's looking over their shoulder every game.

8:17 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

In terms of Burns, I think we have seen why he wasn't the starter earlier in the season. You can see the results of the last two games. This isn't to say he doesn't have a lot of potential. I think the coaches were trying to bring him along slowly. We made the mistake with Jason Campbell of throwing him in too early in his career and it took years for him to recover. With Burns, I think it was idiotic that we played him last year. I considered it a waist and a Borges attempt to save his job.

8:18 PM
Blogger WDEwg said...

Jay- any names being floated on search for OC?
Saw one post (earlier thread) which mentioned that Franklin was negotiating mid season last year when Borges still was in seat. Wouldn't see any problem at all with that this year since CTT said Ensminger (nor anyone else on staff) would not be it next year.

8:20 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- I agree that we should not have played Burns last year. It was a wasted year for him. As for Campbell, I believe that he got a lot better from the start of 2002 till the end of 2002, and had Petrino been the OC, I bet he would have had a solid 2003

8:21 PM
Blogger WDEwg said...

Steve- -wouldn't you consider throwing Trotter out there this year to be an attempt to save CTT's job, and also a huge waste?

8:21 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

wdewg, we employed a strategy against Arkansas to eliminate penalties. We just kept our offense off the field. Suddenly, the number of penalties went way down.

Actually, the number of penalties have been going down, but as the number of penalties went down, the number of mistakes by Todd went up. That is why I think he will likely be first string bench the rest of the season.

I do see hope here. The remaining coaches on offense have all worked together for a while now and I think they will come up with an offense that will be much improved. Of course, we could be much improved offensively and still be pretty bad.

Eddie - True Blood - gross. I love scary stuff, haunted shows, etc. Blood dripping from mouths no so much.

Mr. Sensible -great show Saturday morning (I'll forgive you one Toby Kieth reference and that's it)

Steve - Bless your heart, but I never saw Todd look pretty good. I'm not berating the young man, I'm just saying the occasional completed pass does not "pretty good" make. IMHGO.

I like the tone in Kodi's voice. He's starting to sound like he actually believes what he's saying when he refers to himself as a leader.

8:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

wdewg, I do consider the idea of using Trotter to be a big waist, but JayG seems to feel that Caudle is a train wreck waiting to happen. If that is the case, I don't see that we have any choice. Until Todd's arm gets much better, I don't think he should be playing. He seems to get his feelings hurt any time another QB plays and doesn't come in and play well as a backup. I would sit Todd indefinitely. If Kodi were to get injured, hopefully Todd's arm would have had a chance to heal and he could step in, but from what I have seen he doesn't have the character to be a backup QB.

monica, look at the stats from the first few games. We were passing for around 250 yards a game, which wasn't bad. Todd did a good job of getting the ball where it needed to be, but it was admittedly in a Ken Stabler fashion. He knew enough to win us a few games. Long term, he wasn't the answer.

As for Kodi, I think it is pretty clear he isn't there yet. The last few drives against Arkansas showed a lot of promise. Hopefully that will carry over, but until the defense is concerned over his throwing ability, he is a liability.

Steve- Funny post on less offense equals less penalties. Jay's dad can correct us, but doesn't a grade 3 separation need surgery to heal? or is it just rest?

Jay- He laughed at Gus M? I wouldn't expect him to ask you for a piece of paper to write that down, but it's not a crazy suggestion.

See if anyone agrees with this comparison:
Dogfighting and personal issues aside.

Mike Vick and Burns.

Both have cannons for arms, but struggle with touch passing. Their best throws seem to be when they wind up and let loose. Both rely heavily on their feet when things break down, or sometimes if the first read is covered. Both seem to have large upside, but never (vick) haven't yet (burns) realized it.

I know. It's a stretch and borderline bad taste. Just something I've been thinking about purely in terms of on the field play.

8:37 PM
Blogger Mark said...

Honestly, I will have to see Trotter playing to actually believe we will take the redshirt off of him.

8:39 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Burns is a good runner, not a great one.

He does throw a very nice deep ball. Arm strength never will be an issue for Burns.

8:41 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The problems with this offense go further than the QB. Penalties were the biggest thing early on. Receiver play has been a constant issue. I am hoping that we see a new attitude Thursday. I do think that the conflicts in the offensive staff probably were felt by the players. I also think CTF's final speed induced practice was a coach ranting trying to show the other coaches was he wanted to see. My guess is that as a people person, CTF would make a good computer programmer. Let's see what an offensive staff that has worked together for a long time can do without a conflicting voice in the mix.

8:42 PM
Blogger WDEwg said...

Whew- -was afraid of getting skewered on that one. But agree with you, Eddie- -Vick was much more elusive. Burns probably also looks faster just in comparison to the other AU Qb's he was around (Cox lugging refrig on his back) and Todd.

Powers will play and hit someone. He has been one of the best surprises, especially last year. He finds a way to get involved. He will hit someone, opponent, teammate, ref, really doesn't matter. Powers finds someone to hit.

8:47 PM
Blogger Bfoster18 said...

Powers is a bad ass. That's really all I have to say. In fact, he's much better as a college player than Carlos Rogers was. Carlos was prototypical everything for an NFL DB. But Powers anwers the calls over and over and over. I remember asking the question why in the world are we going after another 5'9" DB. I really missed on that one. So did Alabama and everybody else. Alabama picked a teammate of his who never really saw the field and quit this year.

i was trying to think of a good comp for Kodi as well, but i do not think vick is it either. yes, vick was a great runner, kodi is only good which is a fair point by jay, but i think the reason why its not the right comp (and they nobody probably can use vick as a comp) is because vick was always the fastest guy on the field, in every game, period. it allowed him to do things others couldn't.

as far as burns go, the biggest short-term improvement he needs is touch / accuracy on the short and intermediate stuff.

Someone mentioned True Blood earlier. It is a fanstastic series. I love the unique story line and the accents of the characters. It is both scary and humorous. There is a gorgeous black lady on there who the named Terra of all things. Yea, Gone with the wind. And she has a thick southern accent that is great to listen to. She is a great character.

The issue with Kodi is the short passing game. If you watch clips of Kentucky when the Air Raid was going stronge, most of the passes were short ones and the yards after catch came into play.

I guess the best way to describe our offensive issues is to say that if you run the spread you have to cause the defense to spread out. We haven't done that.

Trooper Taylor? He was very animated when he was at Tennessee, chest-bumping players as they came off the field. I didn't know what position he was supposed to be coaching, but he always seemed to have a towel in hand. I just figured he was like Cuba Gooding in "Radio", and there was something not quite right about him.

Taylor coached RB's at UT for a couple of years, and then switched back to WR. He's supposed to be a damn good recruiter as well. But my first impression of him (either on TV or at the 2004 beatdown by Auburn in Knoxville) was that he was head cheerleader. Then, in the SECCG in Atlanta that year, when he was out there almost on the numbers high-fiving and chest-bumping after plays, I was like "Hey, there's Radio again!".

Per his bio, he was promoted at UT to be in charge of social activities at UT the last two years. So he had that going for him.

Yeah, I thought it was cool the way they had all of those guys and they were willing to poke a little fun at that time.

By the way, MAJOR COOL POINTS for being a Stones fan!

Big props to you too, Monica, for digging football and blues music.

Jay, I got one more for the night. Any chance you could suggest to Hawley that they move Bos back to his natural position at center? He's no tackle himself as Pugh's proved to not be a good center.

Bosley can't play center.

I asked him two weeks ago about that. He said the shoulder won't permit it; too painful.

Damn. Why don't we another center?

That's supposed to be Big Snacks Berry, but I haven't seen much of him on the field this year.

Another "favorite" was DeAndre Green. His claim to fame was shooting a gun in the air on the Haley center Concourse to break up a fight.

Ok the Seattle Seahawks are officially my most hated team.

They just ripped my heart out, I'm going to need a psychiatrist.
