Looking ahead to A-Day, Part I
Hey everyone. So we're coming up on the most anticipated Auburn A-Day in a decade. There will be plenty of side stories worthy of regard as things unfold Saturday.
You wanna know which player-related tangents I find most appealing? Sure you do.

You wanna know which player-related tangents I find most appealing? Sure you do.
- Quarterbacks: That's the story at this point. To put an even tighter focus on it, I want to know if Neil Caudle is as bad as Tony Franklin reported. I sense that his skill set -- specifically his cleaner throwing mechanics -- eventually may lead him to the starting lineup.
- Onterio McCalebb: As I said on the Gridiron Breakdown earlier this week, McCalebb has a singularity of purpose I haven't seen at Auburn since Rudi Johnson. Can McCalebb provide the same kind of boost Johnson made during the 2000 season? Probably not, but we'll be able to see Saturday if McCalebb is capable of immediate contribution.
- Mike Slade: Can he play? He looked pretty good the one time I noticed him playing in 2008 ... at Ole Miss.
- Justin Albert: You looking for a sleeper in your Auburn Fantasy Football draft? His walk-on status will keep the bidding low, but it's clear offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn believes in Albert. The former Prattville tailback will have a (previously unforseen) chance to make a mark in 2009 ... provided that trust remains steadfast through the summer. Why is Malzahn smitten? Saturday could provide some answers.
- Defensive front freelancing: DT Mike Blanc indicated last week that assistant coach Tracy Rocker wants his players "doing what they do best." Blanc, a noted "bull" rusher, said he's been given the green light to use that technique as needed. Will Rocker's relaxed approach to conformity of technique result in better production?

I'm a faker and I like office supplies too..
I really love a good pen!!!!!
Getting dark in Louisville.
I'm scared. It's cold.
I've been to some creepy places out there in Oldham County.
Isn't it true that you can't buy alcohol in Bourbon County, KY?
And isn't it equally true that you can buy alcohol in Christian County, KY?
I swear I've read that somewhere before.
Faker, the Jack Daniels distillery is in Lynchburg TN, which, oddly enough, is a dry county.
Everybody else glued to the quest for Lord Stanley's Cup? Midway through 2nd period the mighty Red Wings and the upstart Blue Jackets are scoreless. Exciting playoff hockey; the Blue Jackets first ever playoff series.
well, not scoreless now. detroit 1-0
Hey Joey,
I am looking at the Honda Accord EXL V6 with the navigation system. List with delivery, etc is $31.645. What's the best deal I could expect if I am paying cash with no trade in?
and just like that the Blue Jackets tie it up
Faker shares my fetish.
I like it.
Being a newcomer I am impressed with the hotties...y'all are either sport wise or quickfinger googlers. When I had to leave I wondered if anyone new when the Braves played in Boston. Got several correct answers
new = knew dumbazz
Does JayG have any idea where he is going?
Digg! No part of you is dumb!
HAHA @ Jay G. being scared in the Louisville dark.
Digger- I love google, but don't need it for basic Braves trivia. Plus it helped that I just read somewhere the other day that 1953 was the 1st year in FIFTY years that a new city (Milwaukee) was represented in MLB.
Mon- you sure must have spent a long time on that Staples web site ;-)
can't say as I blame ya
Good deal THT I just didn't expect anwsers so quick and accurate.
Shows me up
Mon I just feel dumb when I can't type a simple word.
THT - It's free and I won't get arrested for downloading office supply pics!
digger-if typing relates to intelligence then I'm dumb as a rok
Mon- you always make me chuckle. Just remember, even though it's free, those kind of sites could be loaded with spyware. You may think it's a really hawt all-in-one printer jpg when it's really something bad.
THT - This may excite you. I have some developing interests around maps.
Old news I saw on al.commie. I just couldn't resist sharing:
"The Birmingham news provided a public service for the fans of Alabama last week: a map to Auburn. Since this vicious rivalry began in 1893, Tide boosters had never needed to learn their way to the Tigers' home turf, and some had probably suspected the route would take them through haystacks and chicken coops. But last Saturday 'Bama diehards found that the roads to Auburn are indeed paved, even though their trip did not go smoothly. For by whipping the previously unbeaten Tide 30-20 before 85,319 delirious fans at Jordan-Hare Stadium, the Tigers dashed 'Bama's hopes of a national championship, earned a one-third share of the SEC title and served notice that they, and by extension their fans, were no longer a second-class act in their own state.
Two days before the kickoff, Auburn coach Pat Dye had railed in his office about a story in Bama, a Crimson Tide fan newsletter, suggesting that a win by the Tide would swing the pendulum of football might in the state back to its "normal place." The persecution complex that bedevils the Tigers was evident. No matter that after nearly a century of frustration Auburn had finally brought its series with Alabama to Jordan-Hare Stadium. No matter that the Tigers had beaten the Tide the last three years. No matter that Auburn had won the SEC crown in 1987 and '88. "Alabama fans don't want you to walk on the same side of the street as them," said Dye. "They want you in slavery. They want you in bondage."
That's a risk I'm willing to take.
EXCITED!!!! BIG TIME!!!!
Smallville has gotten too dark in it's last season.
don't tell Jet, but I missed the first 3 qtrs of AU's overtime loss at UF ~7 years ago cause I was at a map society meeting.
Careful JayG You can get run over by one of those huge Coal trucks.
Two thoughts ...
1. Monica ... a legal pad, a gel pen, and a mechanical pencil.
2. Digger ... Pat Dye. Pat By God Dye.
It's amazing how Bama is continually looking to return to "normal."
I heard that TarHeel... punishment ... go eat a bowl of ice cream with chocolate syrup.
THE MAN is right he took on bammer and made them like it.
Oh Jet, OH JET! - talk to me!
Nova - Something has gotten too dark for YOU????
Nova when you are abnormal you keep trying to get back on track. They just can't seem to make it.
bama sux and I hate them big time.
excuse me while I go punish myself with ice cream & choc syrup. I haven't been punished like that in 3 days.
That's what I'm talkin' 'bout, Tar Heel!
MON- what's the map interest?
Tar Heel ...
It's not about the maps, really.
It's about the Hi-Liters, the push pins, and the Sharpies.
Red wings crushing jackets, so I just flipped to TCM.. don't know yet what it is, but reminds me of Here Come the Brides. Anybody else watch that show with Bobby Sherman?
Jet- you're making me perspire now. Don't.
Stop.
Don't.
Stop.
Don't stop.
Coach Dye looked better in crimson.
I kid I kid.
Faker, who's in your avatar?
Coach Bryant, Coach Dye, & Richard Williamson.
I had to crop out John David Crowe, who was to the other side of Coach Bryant in the original picture.
Williamson was one of the finalists along with Coach Croom when Shula got the job.
Thanks.
Coach Dye ... bathed in the pure waters of Chewacla State Park and his crimson sins were washed away.
... or he lost his pants in Lake Martin. Whatever.
THT - I was doing some research on Native American tribes in south Alabama. Also, saw a PBS show on Appalachia - DeSoto and his mapmakers, etc.
Tar heel, I don't think it's the maps per se. I think it's the Garmin.
Mon. I don't like dark, especially dark superheroes. They're supposed to be above ordinary troubles.
I think he lost his pants and THEN had to go have his sins washed away. How in the hell do you lose your pants?
"Huh? That's weird. I had them on a minute ago."
Coach Dye should have known that what you do in the dark...
Will always come to the light.
Birmingham Public Library has a superb collection of maps donated to them by Rucker Agee. In conjunction with that other school, they have created an excellent digital library:
BPL Maps
Phred ...
I will send private missive to explain my theory.
Maybe this was discussed, but anybody see where Luper says only Tate and McCaleb will be the only two scholly rb's to play Sat.
Mike Slade got hurt today and will miss Sat. Leaves Thompson and Etheridge and two walk ons at that position.
Yes Faker, Dye found the Light. Hallelujah!!!!
It looks like the Nats might finally win one. But I have confidence in their ability to blow a 5 run lead in the 9th.
I said Etheridge wold play safety, but he is hurt. Only Thonkpson and Drew Cole are on scholly and will play. The other two are walk ons.

MON- 1584 map of SE based on De Soto reports. Includes T'loser (looks for TuScalifer on the map)
1584 Map
So so cool, THT!
I'd love to see a map with tribe locations in southwest Alabama and the Panhandle of Florida in th 1700's.
Goldberg reports Caudle and Trotter "hurt" in practice, but both did return to practice.
ooooooo map 51 does!!!!
map of SE = 1st map of "Georgia" 1733

ah yes, I have that one. Trick to shorten URL (on NC Maps Web site)
look for and click on:
reference url
near the top left corner of your window and that will open the URL.
I realize you'll probably never need to know that.
Thank you very much for that tip, THT. I'm so digging these maps!
Monica,
Growing up I would always get the maps out of my dad's National Geographics. I didn't know where most of those places were, but I loved to look at the maps. Do you think it has something to do with our organizational fetish?
HABOTN = Hottest Atlas Blog on the Net
Part of my hobby has been helping out with the NC Maps project from a user's perspective and offering tips. The folks who are creating it are brilliant and talented, but they aren't map collectors.
www.davidrumsey.com

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/gmdhome.html
Library of Congress digitized maps
I like maps that I can hold and look at - beautiful maps. They are almost like art. Not as much looking at them on the computer.
MON- I suggest you turn back now. It's a very slippery and expensive slope.
BTW, I wish Molly dog would stop dreaming. It's hard to type with her hitting my elbow.
Gosh Ciny! I'm certainly seeing a pattern and a parallel. HA!
THT - From a users perspective, wouldn't it be cool if there was a function that allowed us to overlay an outline of the states as they are currently mapped onto the old maps?
cincy- next time you're in Chapel Hill come by for a map tour.
Hi
THT,
What kind of dog is Molly? My last Golden Retriever was Molly - sweetest do that ever lived. I get to see my granddogs at Auburn this weekend - Zeke (a rescued Sheltie) and Nick (a rescued Golden)
these are not great quality images, but best I could do:
maps
Jhag ...
Save me from Mapquest.
Very cool. Real paper copies of these would be phenomenal! And very expensive :)
hi Jhag, how you doin
Cincy- Molly is a 15 1/2 yr old "tweenie", i.e. a bit larger than a miniature dachshund but much smaller than a std size. She is our baby.
Bro- alwsys making me laugh. You should be on Comedy Central
and I should be asleep. I need to be on the road by 6 a.m. to have some time on College Street b4 stores close.
but I just can't turn off Lord Stanley. Chicago and Calgary tied at 1 starting the 3rd period.
So Marcus Lattimore is coming to our A-day game? 4th overall recruit in nation number 2 ranked RB...WOW...hot damn Luper
Oh, the luxury of only being 1 1/2 hours from Auburn. We are going late tomorrow afternoon. My college baby boy is cooking for his mom and dad! And then we are going to open mic night at Auburn Christian Fellowship. I hear he is going to sing. Should be entertaining!
Terrell Zachery was Alabama’s all-time leading high school WR...
what does Tuberville do to these kids to downgrade their talent so much same with Caudle, Slaughter and a handful of others
Cincy- that sounds WONDERFUL!!!
jhag- good question. I'm too busy thinking maps and watching hockey... who was our last 5* recruit who ended up a 5* player?
Probaly someone back in the day when they didn't give out stars to be honest with you.
GO back to 23 and 24 im guessing
yep, i think that's about right
Hockey not on here, and i hate it. I enjoy watching it ... don't know the players, just know the names of the teams.
But I enjoy watching hockey.
So our Defense kills our offense every scrimage isn't it suppoused to be HIGH OCTANE? is our defense that good?
I'm worried.
no Versus?
jhag - I think our defense is ok, it's not a '04 or '88 defense, that's for sure. Therefore, I think your worries are justified.
In reality, defense should be ahead in the spring. It's easier.
Offensive terminology different. New coaches, new techniques.
On defense, you have a line coach that says, I don't care how you rush. Just do it the best way you can.
One guy's worrying about technique and angles, the other understands the quickest way from A to B is a straight line.
Knology dropped VersusHD, and I don't like it.
excellent analysis Bro Jet. I'm still worried, though.
Hag worries too much.
Jhag,
Don't let her fool you. Monica worries, too, but then pulls out her trusty stapler, fires a couple into the back of her hand, and all is well.
Mike Blanc's prediction on A-Day: "It’s going to be bad every day. We’re going to bring it to them."
I do think Onterio is going to be the number one back though...we never hear of Ben Tate breaking long runs in practice really...
Onterio always does though.
Curtis Luper said he went about 40 to 50 yards. "It seems like he has a couple every week," Luper said.
scout.com reports caudle and trotter were knocked out of the scrimmage tonight. slade got hurt too. i guess the injury bug is not done biting after last year. it said chizik did not go into details about any injuries.
Chicago-Calgary better not be one of those multi-overtime Stanley Cup marathons. That would be awesome, but not tonight.
Read on Goldberg's site that Blanc said they injured two qb's and then he backed off and said they both continued to practice. (Caudle & Trotter)
the QBs were apparently live targets again. kodi may be the man by default eventually. he definitely has a history of being tougher than the other QBs. you gotta be able to take a hit to play in the SEC.
Night hotties. Promised myself I could go get my nails done if I got up and worked out in the morning, so I am off to bed. I hate exercising!
I won't be staying in a hotel without Versus tomorrow night, nor will I be staying at Jet's house.
(Jet- he dares to ignore both of us.)
Kodi can take a hit Ill give him that..remember at UF when he lined up at wideout? got his clock cleaned...got right up
sweet dreams Cincy
When did Knology ever have VersusHD? I certainly wasn't getting it...
ugh... that's it, I'm calling Dish this weekend to sign up for the new hizzy.... or DirecTV...
DANG IT! I can't make up my mind!!
(Jet- he dares to ignore both of us.)
who you talking bout miss Mon?
D,
One last thing. We had Direct installed three years ago when we moved into a new neighborhood without cable. For some reason they couldn't hook up our DVR in the family room, so they put it in my bedroom. Really the pits if we have people over to watch something that has been DVR'd. We all have to pile up in our bed! Well, I found out everyone else on my street was able to have their DVR hooked up in their FR. So I called Direct today and explained situation. They said they would have to charge me to move it. I said I would have to check my options. They decided they would come next week and move it for free.
Dmiller ... they had it half versus/half Golf Channel HD last year.
crap, now I've got to stay up for free hockey. Chi/Calg 2-2 at end of regulation. At least intermisions are shorter and no tv time-outs in OT.
They had Golf ChannelHD too???!?!!!
#$%$@%$@%
Dish seems a few bucks cheaper... is there any reason to go with DirecTV if I don't plan to subscribe to the premiums and the NFL sunday ticket, etc.??
Not in HD anymore ... crap.
Hockey? I thought the league collapsed like 3 years ago? The NHL is still around?
Both of my brake lights are shot on my car... a co-worker clued me into this predicament today. But, I can't change them because all of my tools are at the new house.... ugh! I hope I don't get pulled over or rear-ended tomorrow driving to B'ham.
Oh No!!!
I just realized Anaheim and San Jose are just starting their game. Versus will switch to it once Chi/Calg ends.
I promise I won't stay up for that one.
Holy Cow ... WE HAVE VERSUS AFTER ALL!!!!!
YEAH BABY ... HOCKEY IN THE HANGAR!!!
It was hidden in the 150s! It was hidden in the 150s!
Miller what tools are you needing to change the brake lights?
D. Miller- hockey is the most skilled sport and so fast-paced. I LOVE IT!
Be careful Dmiller, I overheard FSJ saying you had a purty mouth.
umm... apparently a socket set. (which of course is at the new house in b'ham with the rest of my tools) I have to pull back the carpet in the trunk and unscrew a few bolts and take off a cover plate to access the lights so I can change the bulbs. what a pain in the arse!
Jet- they may show the fight at the end of the Bos/Montreal game when they get back from commercial. I always watch the fights, but would be content if they didn't fight.
Or they may just look in on the west coast game ;-)
But it's near intermission, too.
ummm...ok?
Jhag....Jet is right about why the D is better than the O right now. We also have more talent on D than O.
Has CGM taught Caudle how to have downfield vision? It's possible to do , but not easy. Maybe just getting a bunch of reps is making a difference.
I enjoy watching hockey, live... but I hate it on TV (mainly because the camera man rarely ever is able to keep up with the puck and you can't tell wtf is going on half the time).
You, Hag. ;-)
D.Miller - that sounds like the kind of car I'd have to take to the dealer to get the brake light changed. I barely know how to change the bulb in a lamp.
WOW, Overtime lasted less than 10 seconds!
Blackhawks win! Blackhawks win!
In my Harry Caray voice
See y'all on Friday.
Sweet dreams!
Hag...
Hoopie is likely correct about more talent on D. I'm eager to see the tape of the game, in order to see how physically talented we are.
Can we move our feet? Do we get separation?
I better turn it off and go to bed before they get back from commercial.
Good night all. I'll see some of y'all this weekend.
Later to the HOT TEA BAGS.
Does Jos A. Bank have good men's suits? Having a buy 1 get 2 free sale this weekend....
Miller thats what I figured. How far are you driving? Might be worth running in and grabbing a couple wrenches before. You'll kick yourself if you get a 100 buck ticket because of it.
Better yet, if you buy the bulbs from a auto parts store they will probably let you borrow the sockets.
I bought one from there, pretty decent in my opinion but I'm not a suit guy.
I'll send you my measurements, and you can send me one of the free suits.
I already bought the bulbs before looking at the access...
I figured they would be as easy as the headlights, and I didn't need tools to change those...
Sup Hot Teabagggers
fyi on the satellite debate. directv supposedly has a dvr with tivo built in coming sometime this year. the hd dvr i got in 2005 had tivo and it was great. only problem was it had to get hd locals off the air. when directv upgraded their hd programming they wanted me to fork out $400 for the new hd dvr last summer. last december they called and said they would come give me a new one for free and upgrade all the stuff in my attic too. the new box is ok and does the job. i moved the tivo box to the bedroom and they even came in and ran a second sat-2 line through the wall for free to make it work. also make sure to get your $50 referral rebate. you need some else's account number and you get $10/month off for 5 months. my dad just got directv two months ago and loves it too. my buddy down the street has dish and likes it so i don't think you can go wrong with either.
Im a midnight tooooooooker
I don't think you are Jhag, I think you are really a midnight Steve Miller Band quoter.
Lil bit of both
Good morning and TGIF, Hotties! Everybody ready for the A-Day Game?
Have a safe trip, TarHeel!
D.Miller, RE: Golf
You will probably need to call and get a tee time for both Ballantrae and Timberline. IMO, Timberline is more difficult and more expensive. We played there a few weeks ago and it was $140 for the two of us. We won't be playing there again for a long time. I'm sure I've told you before, Ballantrae is my favorite course around here and not far at all from your new hizzy.
Morning Hotties - Have yourselves a good day doing what you do. Continue on with the UAT hate. Hate, hate, hate.
gatiger, does that ever diminish? For me, it continues to grow.
D Miller ... Jos. A. Bank SAle.
Jump on it.
I'll need to do the same ... I've got a $150 gift card.
I've got 4 suits from there ... good quality.
GaTiger ...
You don't have to worry 'bout me hatin' UAT.
Barkeep, a tall frosty mug of Bama hate please.
Gulp, gulp, gulp.
Ahhh, that is mighty tasty.
ehyou - I'm sure I'm not the first to mention this amongst this most erudite crowd, but as I've been out of town and away from HABOTN lately I'll say this; when I see your picture I can't help but think, 'Son, you got a panty on your head.'
Brother - I've never had any doubts about your leanings. There are some however who may need a booster shot from time to time. Perhaps I could go back to my favorite morning sendoff, "Now, let's do it to them before they do it to us."
What a shameThat statement is dripping with sarcasm.
I skipped two spaces before entering my comment. Why are they not there when I publish it??
I was in for writing hot checks which, when businessmen do it, is called an overdraft.
Stabler was found Not Guilty of DUI?!? They must've decided he wasn't driving after all, 'cause the other option isn't plausible.
Is Mr. Woodbery the reasoning media is not allowed? Possibly blowing out of proportion that QB's were hurt in practice?
Just askin'
Stabler was acquitted appropriately. The state limit for BAC is .08, but there was a little known amendment to the law years ago for ex-UAT quarterbacks that raises the limit to .69, thereby ensuring they will never be bothered with having to act responsibly.
Had Joe Namath been in state when he attempted to maul Suzy Kolber, he would have been able to get in his car and run her down without legal repercussion.
Jet, but that only applies to UAT, right?
Luv ... yes.
AU1 ... I think Chiz wanted to be able to have complete and utter focus on the coaching the team hard. The first spring practice brings about a culture change within a program. Those who know about Dye's first spring speak in hushed tones.
Media might have made it difficult to do somethings they wanted to do, and, yes, would have focused on the deficiencies. In Jay G's defense, I would want to be out there, too, and I'm certainly cool with his complaints.
I don't think the decision was geared at any one reporter, but just a gut call to do it the way he wanted it.
I just think Chiz is trying to keep expectations to a minimum, now I feel that would be the case whether the media were allowed in or not.
So what's the deal folks, are people going to start talking and get this thread t0 600 or what?
...crickets...
I hate Bama.
Just doin' my part Seanzie.
I don't think we'll make it. My Hottie-sense tells me there'll be another awesome article within an hour.
That's too bad, this thread had a great run. I hate Bama as well. I didn't until this year because they were knee deep in irrelevance, they've all seemed to forget that.
Ehyou ...
"We released ourselves into our own recognizance."
"You mean you busted out."
"Ma'am, we didn't feel the institution had much to offer us anymore."
And this here's the TV. Two hours a day, either educational or football, so you don't ruin your appreciation of the finer things.
Is Miller's Crossing worth watching? It's the only Coen film I haven't seen. I can't decide if a non-comedic Coen film would be worth 2 hrs of my life.
Hadn't seen it, ehyou.
"Does they blow up in funny shapes?"
"Only if you think round is funny."
Did watch "Burn After Reading" the other night ... it had its moments.
Not their best work, though.
It seems I use "only" loosely. I haven't seen that either.
I liked Miller's Crossing but I haven't seen it in a loooong time.
In answer to some of the probing questions - I saw Miller's Crossing years ago but can't honestly say that I remember much about it. I know I liked it at the time but I guess it didn't make that much of an impression on me as I've only seen it that one time. I saw Burn After Reading not too long ago and was disappointed.
Them's my thoughts.
Morning all.
Bammers are poor losers
AND even worse winners
Nationals finally won one.
see you later
this a hit and run..... sorry
New Thread?
Gosh, I have spring fever! I want to be outside, preferable playing golf!!
I played Wednesday and Thursday Luv. sure was nice
Lucky! (say like Napolean) We're playing tomorrow, but I wish I was out there right now.
i may play again Sunday. Tomorrow is reserved for pretending like it's a real football game and tailgating and what not
where r u playing?
New thread up.... psyche!!!!
We're playing tomorrow because it's supposed to rain on Sunday. I wanted to play at Ballantrae, but they would have had to pair us up with another 2some and we're pretty bad, so we like to play alone. So, we're going to play at Highland Park.
Golf is for people that aren't tought enough to play tennis.
You can't even compare the two. Maybe saying ping pong is for people who aren't tough enough to play tennis would make more sense.
Golf is for people who can't play full contact Golf.
Yes it can be done, and yes I have done it.
So how does mini golf compare to tennis?
I am not tough enough to play ping pong.
i played tennis in high school. Golf is waayyy more fun
Are you tough enough for tiddly-winks?
But you can't charge the net in golf. That's way more fun than everything in golf.
500 + Doug Smith
I played on the tennis team in HS ... sliced my finger opening a can of tennis balls and had to forfeit my final match. Haven't played much since.
Playing golf Monday at Capitol Hill Legislator course at 9:10 a.m. weather permitting.
I am pumped.
end of line.
