Joey Bag of Dumps ...

As you may recall, the poobahs and opinion setters of college football -- GameDay bozos -- were in Auburn for the Georgia game, and showered us with love following the butt kicking. The response? We made a move in the poll.

What was left to do? Keep the pedal down. We didn't. We fell back, and so all we could do was hope for UCLA to beat USC (which they gave them a pretty good battle), or K State to beat Oklahoma (which was a rout). The SEC Championship game didn't factor into any of it.

Any chance we had -- large or small -- died when we didn't pummel Bama because the yakkety yaks were ready to embrace us.

And was this schedule story from the NY Times?

WTF is the NY times rag doing writing stuff about AU? And why isn't anyone looking at the fact that the schedule's full and AU offered to play it in 2012?

We weren't #2 in the BCS after the Georgia game, Jet, and we were playing a crap team (Bama) and a team we had already beaten for our last two games. We had peaked; people weren't going to move us up any higher.

Jet, we got screwed.

A fable is where the puppet eats the fox, and there is a moral about how you should never go near a puppet.

Getting screwed is when you have a better season than two other teams, but then you don't get a chance to play for the national championship. Different things.

And even if we had been put in the NC game, whatever team that got booted out would have been screwed. No undefeated BCS conference champ should be excluded from the NC game. But that's life.

USC started 2004 # 1, Oklahoma started 2004 # 2, both of them are schools that the national media love, it would have taken a bribe of Bryant proportions for us to jump past them even if we had went beaten all 11 other SEC teams by three or more TD's and played only one non-conference game and had beaten a team from a power conference.

That being said, having W. Carolina, W. Kentucky, several games vs LaMonroe and LaTech, Ball State three times (if you count this coming year), UTMartin, Tenn Tech and several of the other teams that pop up on our schedule every single year doesn't help us either.

3:57 PM

Kristina,

There was a pre-season BCS ranking back in 2004? If I remember correctly the BCS has always started up in early October.

3:58 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

Tough question.
Go back to 10 regular seasno games
Have all teams interested in National Championships join a conference.
Realign conferences so you have 8 regional conferences.
Take top 2 teams from each conference and have a playoff. Single elimination

I don't want to mess too much with the the conferences. 12 teams in the SEC is enough. I hate that we stopped playing Tennessee every year starting in 1992 and Florida starting in 2003.

I thought it was hilarious at the time, in 04, that the Bammer hung their hat on "keeping Auburn from playing for a BCS title" by hanging in the game in the IB.

How 'bout this? It's what we (all college football fans) really want. Before the bowls, decided what we want to do for that season -- a title game ... 4 team playoff, no title game. Whatever.

We want to change the rules each to suit the latest problem. We'll never catch up to it.

4:07 PM

Intelligence reports suggest that the puppet's plan for college football is to trick all conference champions to bite each other's hands off. We must not let them enact this plan.

It's not the puppets that do the biting. They use that old trick where they get on someone's hand, antagonize a human, then the human naturally gets angry and bites the puppet, thus unwittingly biting off or maiming the human hand. Both Harrison and I have self inflicted hand injuries due to puppets. Thus the hate.

Folks, I am sorry I missed most of the discussion on how the 2004 team got screwed. The didn't get screwed. I should have let everyone know a long time ago, but I assumed you were all aware of this. The National Championship in college football is meaningless. If we took a vote on who is the national champ here on HABOTN, it would be just as valid as the BCSBSNC. I am not concerned with the national championship. There has never been a champ in major college football and that is not likely to change anytime in the near future.

Wooh!!! Glad I got that cleared up.

From Goldberg, 800-600-6014, I mean, al.com ...

"Get out your calculators. Auburn has just emailed how we're all going to keep score at Saturday's 1 p.m. A-Day Game in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

"Let's just say it's not traditional.

"The offense will get 6 points for a touchdown, 3 points for a field goal, 2 points for an `explosive play' (15 yards or more), 2 points for three consecutive first downs; and 1 point for a kick conversion.
The defense will get 7 points for a touchdown, 5 points for a turnover, 4 points for a sack, 3 points for a blocked field goal, 2 points for three-and-outs, 2 points for a tackle-for-a-loss and 1 point for a blocked PAT.

If this is any guide, the defense beat the offense 61-34 in the last scrimmage. The defense beat the offense 45-40 in the first scrimmage. Coach Gene Chizik has opted for this scoring method because injuries have hurt his depth, and he wanted to keep full units on the field."

Marshall has some inside info on the practice in one of his for your eyes only blogs. I don't want to get into the content too much, because that is how he makes his living, but I will say that apparently Kodi made 3 huge mistakes during the scrimmage. Also, Caudle looked like he was the better QB. While Trotter has a strong arm, he isn't ready for prime time.

5:14 PM
Blogger Suntiger said...

I've been trying to catch up on posts and noticed where yesterday folks were asking about Raven Gray. He transferred to Delta State.

As far as the national championship is concerned, as long as the majority of the votes come out of the Northeast and Left Coast, schools like Auburn will always have a hard time getting in the game until there is a playoff system.

5:21 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I don't know that I agree Suntiger, I think any year but 04 and 05 we get in to the game if we do what we did in 04. We just had really bad timing. I don't think Florida would have gotten in in 04 if they had gone undefeated either. Those two teams were the top picks from the get go, it was going to be awful hard to pass them. Same story in 05. It will be harder for us then it will be for a Texas, UF or USC, but I think we can get in with the right season.

5:29 PM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

Are yall hearing what Jay Jacobs did? what a moron!

UCLA was going to travel to the Georgia Dome to open the season in 2010. What is the issue? Jay Jacobs would not agree to it. I swear. ESPN/ABC was going to pay us $500,000 to play in the game. But instead we have to pay some podunk school like Arky State, or UT-Chatt to come and play us, just so we get 8 home games.

5:42 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

jhag, we would make a lot more money paying a podunk team to come to Jordan Hare than $500,000. We pay podunk teams that much. Jay Jacobs isn't an idiot. It is just that what is best economically isn't necessarily what is best in terms of the fans.

5:47 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

By the way, from what I read at Undercover, it appears Caudle is the number one QB at the moment. This goes along with what jay said last night.

I find it truly amazing that Caudle is in the discussion. Last season I was thinking he would likely end up transferring. I gave him next to no chance to be the starter at the end of the season.

Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Steve, its not all about hte money though. After this past season (and another tough one likely in store this year) we will be needing to rebuild our stock nationally in 2010. What better way than by beating a big name school in the season opener in a nationally televised game.

6:04 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Getting waxed in front of a national television audience won't exact help our reputation.

6:11 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

If we get waxed by UCLA then our reputation doesn't matter we are a bad team. But if Chizik is able to turn things around quickly, and we are a pretty good team, we can show that in the game.

I know you say you don't care, if we open the season with UCLA in 04 we might have beat out Oklahoma, not likely but a better possibility.

7:24 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

There is another thing. I don't like it when Auburn opens up with a top notch opponent. 1983 comes to mind. I think we openned with Texas and got spanked pretty good. I think it was like 22-7 or something like that. That game likely cost us a shot at a national title.

For you young pups, remember some openers against Georgia Tech?

Our schedule is plenty tough these days. Take a look at it. Furman is a patsy, but Ball State is far from it. Even Louisiana Tech is no patsy. Don't underestimate them. Ask Bama about those lesser known Louisiana schools.

Not playing UCLA does't bother me a bit.

4 years to start winning?..or go undefeated? Ol Miss and Bama started winning much quicker than that. AU has a lot of defensive talent. Get some offensive talent and we can be back.

I was worried that AU fans would be abnormally positive because of the new coaches....well...that's not the case. Due to lack of offensive depth, this next season's results will hinge much more on the number of offensive injuries than most seasons. If CGM is as good as expected, the offensive starters can keep us respectable(7-8 wins) this season.

Wow...I'm late to the UCLA deal, but man does that SUCK.

I expect nothing less from Jay Jacobs. You have a chance to give your team national exposure against a school that is in the process of rebuilding, just like you are, and you BLOW it.

I'm ready to take on the USC mentality. We will play anyone anywhere. I would love the opportunity to head to the Horse Shoe, the Big House or Austin, Texas. I love big time road games. Who cares if we lose. Exposure would be great.

Willis is also paying dividends so far.

We got a visit out of a kid that i thought was a stone cold lock for Auburn.

His uncle was the first African American to play football at Auburn I think. They both came down to visit today and are supposed to be at A-Day.

Auburn will sign him, but we aren't giving up on anyone. I kinda like that attitude.

8:34 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

Yeah, that kid was in Auburn a couple of weeks ago. I don't know too much about him, who else has offered?

8:35 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

His name is Ladarius Owens from Jess Lanier in Birmingham. His uncle is James Owens.

He said he has offers from Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, Clemson, Florida State, LSU, Ole Miss, Miss State, & Tennessee...so he's the real deal.

8:37 PM

Yeah, yeah, I remember him now. He's going to be in tuscaloser for A-Day? BOOO

SteveFC- yes, I was there for UTx game in '83. 20-7, I believe. We played 4 Top 10 teams that year, including 3 straight weeks late in the season, beating UF, MD (Boomer Esiason) and UGa. An easy Game 1 would have been nice.

My guess is we are anywhere from 4 to 25 years away from contending in the west. If CTT had stayed, we would have likely contended this season.

you really think we would have succeeded with the same coach and same team?

I would love to see us start scheduling the big name opponents also. Unfortunately college football is big money and colleges have to make business decisions.

SteveFC- there's that optimism I've been missing from you, even if it is hypothetical. As for me, I can't imagine Tubs and whoever his latest/greatest OC would have been contending in '09.

9:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I think we would have competed if we hadn't lost all the players because of the coaching change. Jermaine Johnson was the biggest hit, but there were a ton of them. Chris Slaughter was a big hit. We lost numerous linemen. The recruiting class turned out nearly as good as what we may have done under Tuberville, but the other loses aren't something that is going to be replaced quickly. We also lost one of the most successful coaching staffs in the SEC. Now we have a lot of your guys that are largely unproven. It will take a long time to stabalize the staff. The good ones will take head coaching gigs. The bad ones will be fired. It is actually one of the issues Tuberville had. He did well replacing coordinators, but you really have to find coaches that want to be coordinators. I think Borges was a good one and should have never been fired. I also think that Rhoads may have been very content as the DC for many years. My guess is that getting rid of Knox would have been a good idea, or at least moving him to an admin position.

The thing that is important is what we have now. I am not sure why people want to continually bring up Tuberville. We have to deal with what we have now. We have a coaching staff that is young and has limited experience. Some are good recruiters. Hopefully Malzahn will be a great OC. But we are dealing with a staff that is not close to the level of the staff we lost. They may grow into the job, but it will take time.

The hiring of Chizik very much reminded me of the hiring of Shula at Bama, except Shula went with older coaches. Chizik went after younger coaches and particularly good recruiters. If these young pups become great coaches, this could work out very well. It just takes time. I thought it obvious when the change was made that we were aware of this.

9:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

THT, Tuberville had us contending in the west almost every season and we won or shared the west title about half the time.

9:31 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Malzahn has three years of OC experience had has had success at both schools he's coached at. Trooper Taylor is an SEC vet and was part of a good offensive staff at OSU as was Curtis Luper. Ted Roof has won the Broyles Award at DC and has head coaching experience. Lolley has been around forever, and Tracy Rocker is also a vet coach at his position. These don't sound like a lot of younger, inexperienced guys, Steve.

9:32 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Seanzie, compare that with the previous staff.

9:32 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Tuberville since his best season went one game worse in conference every season and as at the helm of the worst Auburn season since the Bowden fiasco in 1998, in his tenth year. I respect the man but c'mon Steve, be real.

9:33 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I think pound for pound this staff, outside of Chizik and his short record is just as good as the previous, if not better.

9:34 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

steve, steve, steve. i love you man, but sometimes i worry about you. what on earth makes you think tuberville would have us in contention for the west next year?

there must be some strooooong tubby kool-aid up in south carolina. the chizik hire was bad, but tuberville was through, couldn't you see that?

9:39 PM
Blogger ADP said...

I'll compare that to the former staff. DAY AND NIGHT. A bunch of very talented up and comers (and more than one future head coach) vs. a bunch of hangers on who are standing around waiting on tenure and who will never be head coaches at any DI or DII school ... EVER.

Those out of conference games look grea on the schedult until we lose them. AU needs to learn how to beat unranked SEC teams at home when favored before we decide to play a big boy schedule.

Phred, during the next season start counting the teams that beat us who have coaches that were on Tuberville's staff.

And Jay is right. There is definitely a reason Tuberville wanted to leave, but I am not going to get into that.

Looking at it from the outside....if Tuberville wasn't going to be able to keep up on the recruiting front, he needed to go, IMO

9:58 PM

Sounds great Phred. When do I get my first $20. We are talking about teams with former Tuberville coaches, correct?

Tuberville cared about Auburn recruiting about as much as you care about Auburn recruiting, FSJ.

10:01 PM

Tuberville was bringing in top 10 recruiting classes, other than the season Saban arrived. That was going to be a small class anyway.

The proof of what I say is coming. Watch and find out.

We need a list of teams. I can think of MSU, UT, Arkansas, Bama, and Ole Miss that all have former Tuberville coaches. My guess is we win one of those.

10:04 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

I prefer some new blood with fire in their belly vs experienced staff and HC who seemed ready to move on. Recruiting mistakes are starting to really show, and they didn't happen overnight. They won't be corrected overnight either, I hope Chizik and Co are given a chance to show what they can do with a more complete roster of players.

10:06 PM

The biggest recruiting mistakes have been with the incoming recruits as well as the linemen we have lost.

Eddie Gran went to UT. Who else from "the previos staff" is somewhere? I don't know.

I'm following your earlier argument of the "previous staff" which means coaches who walked the sidelines last season. This is to be distinguished from "all of Turbervilles former coaches."

I see we are on the Tubbs vs the current staff again.
It's over. He is gone. Move along. He left us with not a whole lot. He MAY have recruited OK but the players left. If you are not there to play, who cares. Look back at some of those classes. Some highly rated players were counted in two classes. Not a good sign for the staff.

It was Price that went to Ole Miss.
