Taylor and Luper talk it out

Hey everyone. Auburn assistants Trooper Taylor and Curtis Luper spent some time this afternoon holding a mock press conference for a group of high-school students.

The students were allowed to ask about anything that interested them.

Some of the questions were mundane. Some were excellent.

Here is an overview of what I thought were the best pieces of information gleaned:

  • LUPER on the way this staff recruits:
``We've been unique and different. We actually used limousines. That was our way, our head coach's way, of emphasizing the state of Alabama. We had to let people know that our coaching staff is here and we'll be out and about. It's unprecedented in college football. Generally, coaches go in different directions. We wanted to saturate the state of Alabama. We accomplished our goal."

  • TAYLOR on how Auburn plans to differentiate itself from Alabama in recruiting:
``A lot of people make mistakes in thinking it's us versus Alabama. That wasn't the goal. Our goal was to keep other schools from coming into this state and taking the best players. Look at JaMarcus Russell. He left Alabama, went to LSU and they won a national championship.

Patrick White leaves and goes to West Virginia. He put them on the map.
Our responsibility is that we take care of the state of Alabama. We'll outwork them -- no matter who it is."

  • TAYLOR on the lifestyle of an Auburn assistant:
If I wear my hat backward and walk into Wal-Mart, it's going to be a three-hour trip. It should be a 30-minute trip. My kids remind me of that all the time. At most places, they don't recognize the assistants; it's just the head coach. At Auburn, it's different.

  • LUPER on changes already made to the program:
"We are developing the culture of our football team. From A to Z. What are they like when they walk across the campus? What are they like when they walk in the building? Will they take their hats off? Will they say `yes sir' and `yes ma'am'? Do they take their earrings off? Will they pull their pants up? Everything. To develop that culture adequately takes a couple years."

  • TAYLOR on the role of football in his life:
``It's been more than a career for me. My father died when I was 12 years old. The men in my life have been coaches. I knew I wanted to coach when I was 13 years old. Those men brought me into their homes, took care of me, treated me like family. The funny thing is -- most of them weren't the same color as me and none of them had the same last name as me.

All they ever asked from me was for me to do my very best."

  • TAYLOR on why he named a son Star:
``for the side of the helmet of the Dallas Cowboys."

  • TAYLOR answering this question: "What was your reaction to the recruit who called out Nick Saban during Big Cat Weekend?"

(**HABOTN point of information: Player in question is TB Lache Seastrunk.)

``He's a 17 year old kid. We're not allowed to comment on their exact names and stuff, but he's a 17-year-old kid. We had to help him and make him understand why that was such a significant deal. He doesn't know. You can't be held accountable for something that you don't know.

Our job is to teach those guys, once they get here, between right and wrong. It's happened to me before. I wouldn't not have taken it personally. I would have considered the source."

  • TAYLOR on Alabama's recent NCAA troubles:

(**HABOTN point of information: Luper urged Taylor to no comment this one. Taylor couldn't help himself.)

I should give a no comment this, but I'll tell you this: I've got to mow my own grass. I can't tell you what's happening at another school. We'll learn from this, too. Even In life, you have to learn from other people's mistakes. I don't know the scenario or situation on how it got to be what it was, but I know we'll make sure we're not in that same scenario.

Anytime something happens that may affect our players, we take Cliff's Notes. We have a team meeting and we go over it -- whether it's a player getting arrested at another school or a student who may have gotten hurt with a bad choice.

We let them know: This could easily be you."

Wow, I like these answers. It may be because they were talking to kids, so they kept it straight forward so even I could understand it, but I like the answers.

The Troop talk about Seastrunk is interesting. Seastrunk called Saban and apologized and from this it seems it may have been prompted by the coaches.

Great blog Jay. Thanks.

The culture is very different now. I don't think we ever had assistant coaches that were treated like superstars before. At least not in the 8 years I lived at Auburn.

I don't think it happens anywhere else either. I think that most assistants would like to spend at least a few years at Auburn.

Great coverage, as usual.. JayG.

Not sure that I buy the "Throw under the Bus" title. Normally you need to be in a position of power to throw another under the bus. I'm not even sure what the "bus" would be...."the Auburn court of public opinion"? I guess if ESPN cancels CTT's gig for next season that would constitute such. Of course in today's twisted world, ESPN will probably consider that pub a positve.

I wonder if the folks that are screaming at CTF are the same folks that were screaming at CTT for "mailing it in" last season. CTF is making some the same accusations as many of those folks. In fact he sounds a lot like many of those folks did last season. Calling such an Emo sounds a litle harsh though.

Nothing new there.

I don't think anything useful is going to come out of Franklin.

7:17 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Now come on guys xCTF is a private guy and is being dragged into these interviews.

Apparently, he was just sitting there working and the phone rang and he answered it and it was the guys from 680 asking him some questions! Afterall, according to him that's how he stumbled into the Josh Moon interview.

Obviously, he HAD to talk about Kodi - a student - a kid who is no longer HIS student...

Thank goodness xCTF is out of that SEC and in a "normal"conference.

It was "ludicrous" that the SEC made him give up his business. He said it made no sense to him. Yet, he agreed to it so that he could take this job he knew he shouldn't be taking.

He's also advocating keeping your kids away from Auburn because religion will be shoved down their throat.

He (JJacobs) didn't have anything to do with Tommy according to xCTF, yet xCTF says he never even saw CTT so how does he know? That confuses me.

When he was asked about the YellerWoods guys specifically he doesn't know them well enough to say, yet he just got through explaining the motivations of the entire coaching staff, board and admin.

He's repeating gossip and filling in the blanks. That's fine to do with your buds, but is it smart to do REPEATEDLY with media types?

"for some reason I have a tendency to say..." for some reason? aawww shucks, ya'll, I'm just a good ole feller trying to do the right thang, just speakin the truth...

Then here's what happens. Hog pitch throws 3 straight balls. Fourth pitch is high and wide, but the ump gives him the call. Next pitch, double play, inning over.

Alright I have some beef. How is it we turn down UCLA because of a full schedule and the majority of the Alabama Sports Talking heads criticize us and then bash us for paying Arkansas State a million bucks to come lose. Alabama, the mighty Crimson Tide who can do no wrong, schedules San Jose State and pays them a million bucks to come lose, but that's ok because they're on the west coast? Really? How bout scheduling Georgia State, a team that doesn't even exist year to play the on the same schedule in 2010? Oh no, no comment there either? WTH?

Chadd Cripe, Boise State football/golf reporter for the Idaho Statesman, spoke to the BSU AD about budget shortfalls and various therapies. One therapy is more road games against the big boys in college football. BSU has an opening in 2011. AU seems to have an opening in 2011. This would be a decent opponent who won't require a return trip. JayGT - ask JJ if he's talking to BSU.

So, Mr. Franklin, you have stated that Tommy Tuberville is great coach and you have also mentioned that he doesn't coach during the week and just makes comments that any fan would make on game day. Am I understanding that correctly. You are saying a great coach doesn't coach during the week and only makes comments like a fan would make on game day. Ummmm, okay Mr. Franklin. Yea, ummm, I understand completely. No, no, that makes good sense.

For all you Bama hater's out there, here is my take on the latest bama situation. I thought the bama hating nation may enjoy.

Does Auburn Need Bama?

2:00 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

If you're indifferent to their existence, then no you do not need Bammer.

2:07 PM
Blogger michael said...

Is "need" a synonym for "loathe" in some contexts? If so, then sure, I need bama.

2:09 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I feel the need ...

Of Course Auburn needs Alabama. If not, people would call us Arkansas.

2:13 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Steve, explain your statement to me, please, I do not get it.

2:15 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

We would be a college in a state without a significant in state rival. Yea, Arkansas has rivals, but nothing like Auburn and that other school.

2:20 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Eddie...I read your blog...nicely put.

I don't live in Alabama and would be fine not having them to hate every year. We could use that energy to go to better stuff.

I'm betting that it would only take a few yeasrs for Au to find a worthy end of the year opponent. Someone would make room on their schedule just for the opportunity.

2:20 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Sean I hope you don't expect anyone here to believe you're indifferent to bama! ;-)

2:21 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Add Georgia Tech to our regular schedule and make the Georgia game the last game of the year. Problem solved.

2:21 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Heck, put Tennessee back on our schedule. They are probably a better substitute anyway. Red and White versus Orange and White works for me and somehow I think Kiffin is going to be easy to dislike.

Shula caused trouble for me when he was the coach at our rival. Beating him felt like kicking a puppy. It we have to replace Bama on the schedule, Kiffin seems like to be very dislikeable.

2:54 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

They may want you to believe the appeal is about the victories, but it's all about the probation. Heck, they might even know that there are more violations that have already occurred and know that sanctions under probation would be brutal.

Without probation = croquet mallet

With probation = Jerry Lawler pile-driver

Norm ...

Your "Forrest Gump" reference reminds me of an exchange at dinner the other night with the Corn Dog fans. These aren't toothless types. They are politically connected graduates.

I tossed out the question "So what do you really think of Les Miles?"

Silence.

Jet: "I think he's Forrest Gump. Right place at the right time guy. Luckiest man on the face of the earth."

More silence.

I think they are scared to death what's gonna happen next, and they'll turn on him like a rabid dog the first whiff of trouble.

It was a conversation they didn't want to have.

2 - she was absolutely a hottie.

You can't have good without the evil.. the yin to the yang.. the family to the nation. That's Auburn, to bama.

Without evil, the good will lose it's meaning. It's the contrast that counts. While we may not like it, we need it.

3:21 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I cannot even imagine what it was like to be an SMU fan back when they got the death sentence. Before that, I considered them a good program, although certainly not great. Afterwords they haven't come close to the success they had previously had. I don't know that I would wish that on anyone. It had to be devastating to the school.

3:27 PM
Blogger michael said...

I know I talk trash to my friends who went to UT because they aren't anyone's prime rival. There is nothing like a rivalry game to get excited for, and we have the best one. The side product of that is living among bammers. Is it worth it? Yeah, I would say it is.

So Michael votes "Yes!" to being glad bama is in our lives.
