First post: Wednesday of Week Five

Hey everyone. Thanks for tolerating yesterdat our new BFF ikarl67. He apparently is a bitter Iowa fan who is disgusted with me ranking the Hawkeyes at 22 in the most recent AP poll.

I kept telling him to email me and not subject himself to HOTTIE beat-downs. He eventually listened. Thanks to all for keeping it civil, though I had no idea you could be so creative with corn allusions.

Here's the Auburn situation at this moment:

PPL was billed to be a game changer on special teams when he came here. He played at a big time florida school with much success doing that in the return game. I believe that is where the hype stems from, at least for me. Could he be a complete dud, absolutely, but can he be any worse than what we have out there right now? That would be hard to do.

I was screaming for Auburn to let TN score at the end of the game with over a minute to play. TN wasn't taking a knee, they were still handing off and running. All we had to do was let them score and kick the extra point - 37-29. We could have gotten the ball back, scored and made a 2 point conversion and headed for overtime.

That Bowden didn't think of it was the beginning of the end for him.

9:40 AM
Blogger coosa said...

Jay, I'm glad you're excited about the game, for any reason. ;)

I think Tony Franklin was responsible for a lot of the PPL hype. He used his injury as an excuse for the offense being dismal in the first game last year; said that much of the offense went thru PPL and when I got hurt that limited what they could do.

Jet, that was a great post at the end of the last thread. Its a shame it fell off into the end-of-thread graveyard.

The PPL thing will be interesting. Just like with Todd, CTF could turn out to be right. I am not sure if punt returns is where he belongs. I typically prefer the smaller faster returners on kickoffs. I prefer punt returners to have a bit more beef on their bones, but there is a lot of room for improvement there, so anything is possible.

More than likely it is Gulley or Washington because PPL has been out so long, but I would like to at least see him get in the game some. With his kind of speed, it is another opportunity to stretch the field.

9:54 AM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

SFC, that same coach who 'knocked off Florida in 2007' had already allowed his team to be woefully underprepared for not one, not two but, the first 3 games of the 2007 season - all at home, all of which we were prohibitive favorites. This with a 3rd-year starter at QB and some serious talent on both sides of the ball, plus two coordinators with proven records of success.

You can say a lot about Tubs, good and bad, but one thing you can't say is that his teams were never consistent, outside of one season in ten.

Well, I take it back - last year we were consistently awful. So make it two seasons in ten.

9:55 AM

Wow, someone saying that we had serious talent although others have said we had no talent. The delusional comments continue.

9:57 AM

Steve has said here often that Auburn will take 5 years to get the depth and talent back to where it was under Chizik, but yet why would it take 5 years if Tubs left it so stocked? I like Steve, but he is now Teflon Steve. Good luck getting any valid points to stick :)!!!

9:59 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

He made the change and our offense got worse.

Tommy of 1999-2004 and Tommy of 2006-2008 were two different coaches. The fire appeared to be gone. The record stayed good in 06 & 07, but there was still something missing except for a moment or two here and there.

RK, in general I hold Auburn people to a higher standard and do not trash good Auburn people, such as Tuberville or Franklin. I realize that people make mistakes and that Tuberville obviously made a mistake hiring Franklin. I have also acknowledged that Tuberville had basically lost the team last season due to getting the team on the same page, but to continually say childish things like we had no talent because or recruiting and then we had a ton of talent but no coaching ....blah blah blah...is just silly. Things didn't work out. Tuberville was a great coach but made mistakes.

Remember, many of you were bashing the hiring of Chizik also. We need a leader, not a loser seems to have been the tone of the day, and then the ignorance of the statement is revealed.

CTF is successful at MTSU although good ole Auburn people continue to trash him even after their ignorance is revealed.

Auburn fans trashed Jason Campbell until 2004, when their ignorance was revealed.

Auburn fans trashed Brandon Cox until their ignorance was revealed in 2008 and they realized they lost a lot better QB than we had on the roster. People spent the season saying play Kodi because Cox sux.

Auburn fans trashed Todd while he played injured and even booed him. This year their ignorance is also revealed.

It is a long running story.

Steve,

Once a week or so you cause my head to explode.

Nobody trashed Tommy Tuberville. People said that during his last couple of years he didn't seem to have the control of his team that he had in the past.

It's an opinion. It may be right, it may be wrong, however it is allowed. Jay G. allows us to have discussion about pretty much anything within reason on here, including allowing you to defend all that is Thomas Hawley Tuberville.

Tub was discussed earlier because he was on the radio, then we moved on...then like Tommy's Knight in Shining Armor you arrive after the party to defend him yet again.

Fans say and do stupid stuff out of frustration or out of anger...it happens.

This isn't the AL.com forum. If you went there then you'd probably go postal. What happens here isn't bashing, it's a discussion with some sarcasm thrown in.

SFC, you make good points in your last post.

However, before I jump off this particular topic, I would take exception to one thing you said: I don't consider Tony Franklin a 'good Auburn man'. Not a value judgement, merely a fact. He said himself he had reservations about taking the job, and he has no feelings one way or the other about his term of employment. He has shown no loyalty to AU, nor should we show any loyalty towards him. He was a hired gun who couldn't hit the target, for a number of reasons that weren't all his fault. It happens.

Think of it this way: Tony Franklin is no more or less a 'good Auburn man' than Jay G. Tate. The difference being is that JGT has been very good at his job for over 10 years, while TF failed miserably at his job in just 10 months.

There were also people that hated Chizik, because he left for Texas. I am not sure how they resolve that one in their minds.

Boulware is someone we should stick behind. I am not certain of the causes of our special team woes, but the coaches should be given the opportunity to work things out.

Often people want to trash someone before giving them a chance to resolve a situation. Often they are proven wrong by overreacting. It is just better to let Chizik evaluate Boulware and trust him to make the right decision. After all, he is closer to the situation.

Sensi, saying Franklin is not an Auburn man is probably a fair statement. I don't think he ever bought in, which is likely part of the issue.

On to more immediate things, such as Boulware and the special teams. It is nice to see that we haven't had a punt blocked in the last two games. I have been watching for it, and haven't seen anything to concern me yet.

Kickoffs is another concern. I don't care who is back there returning kickoffs, we can't kick the ball out of bounds. That is giving the opponent the ball at the 40 and really stinks. It use to be that was just a 5 yard penalty and a re-kick. Now it is more like a 20 yard penalty.

Your points about Chizik and Boulware are spot on. While some of us here and elsewhere questioned if Chiz was the best we could do under the circumstances, many so-called AU 'fans' declared him a failure from the get-go. That was clearly in appropriate even at the time.

As for Boulware, I don't think he is the major problem on with our ST units. I also think Chiz will give him plenty of time and guidance in an effort to turn things around.

If we consistently give UT a 60 yard field to play with, then we are just handing an offense that's struggling a helping hand by limiting what our D can do.

Micheal, there's an instant test. If the blue and orange plus sign appears, you're an Auburn man. The drawback is that Steve has to watch you take the test.

As for Chizik, I am not saying that I thought he would be great when he was hired. I will say that by this summer I thought he had done a great job based upon the decisions that he made and that I see why Jacobs hired him.

I like the coaches Chizik chose, and more importantly that they fit together. I just get the feeling these coaches respect each other. I do judge a lot of this by second and third hand information, but I saw hints of trouble before last season. I saw no hint of it this season.

My position was basically wait and see when Chizik was hired.

I would assume it wouldn't be Caudle, however he'd be a good candidate.

Truthfully when left alone, Crompton seems to make really nice throws, but if he is rolling out or under pressure he forces them in there.

Plus UT's receivers haven't helped him out tipping some balls that have been picked.

I just failed the spelling portion of the test. Sorry, Michael.

digger, very well put. It is knee-jerk reactions that allow problems to persist. That is why I think Gulley deserves a bit more time.

10:39 AM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Hasn't Caudle been simulating Crompton in practice for a couple of years straight?

10:40 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

Crompton + Pressure = GOOD THINGS FOR AUBURN.

Kiffin didn't give Crompton the highest praise yesterday after practice. i can't remember the exact quotes, though. if we can get to him we'll be in good shape.

10:41 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

S FC I am the worlds worst knee-jerk artist. But looking back if the coaches had just stuck with some one maybe it would have worked out.

10:42 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

RK, I agree Crompton looks good at times and when reviewing their Ohio game initially I was wondering why he was being criticized. Then a little pressure came and I saw. Also, there was one play he ran the wrong way. The rest of the team were headed in the other direction.

Crompton and Caudle for that matter, need to learn the value of a well placed pass into the stands. Cox also sometimes made the same mistake and held onto the ball too long or forced something.

We have advantages at many positions in this game.

Our o-line vs. their d-line is a good match up.

Our RBs vs. their thin/inexperienced LB corps.

Malzhan vs. Monte is very intriguing.

We have them beat on AU women vs. UT women. HANDS DOWN!

Blogger Jet said...

I understand an unidentified co-ed will be at practice simulating Layla Kiffin.

Gulley deserves another shot at Punt Returner, just not this year. When you fumble 30% of the time, you need to see the bench.

10:45 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

I never did get to see that Layla Kiffin picture, Oh well I'm too old to worry about that. Need to worry about important things like where the hell did I put my glasses.

10:46 AM
Blogger michael said...

Can we agree that Boulware has worked wonders for Wes Byrum? Keep him. The problem with catching punts is psychological and I don't know you can blame him for that. The coverage units are the one thing I think he is not doing all that well at, but we have very little depth which is giving him headaches. Still, not time to fire the guy or anything.

10:47 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

The knee-jerk stuff is something I think really hurt Kodi in the past. I don't think he has played a game at QB where he wasn't afraid one mistake would get him pulled.

It is one of the things I admired about Todd last season. He didn't seem to get rattled because he was pulled out of the game, while Kodi always seemed to take more time to get back into the game.

In that case, I think I'll retake the test just for fun, Michael. I am also inspired to see if I can get some Saban-cakes for the urinals here at work.

10:51 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

By the way, Kiffikin is a good example of a coach that would have upset me. While I admired how Chizik handled the team even before the season started, if I were a UT fan I would have been wondering if my head coach had the maturity to coach.

10:52 AM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

By the way, that does not mean that Steve watched me take the instant test. I had an alumni exemption.

After looking for a bit, I have decided this is the best Saban picture for the urinal cakes we will start selling soon, Scott Chocolate:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7OC0YbG2fek/R_9YmzlIoBI/AAAAAAAAFgs/FkiYn_wJykg/s400/NickSaban.jpg

He is like, "Seriously, you are here again? I mean, come on, this is getting ridiculous. "

10:59 AM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Michael, I couldn't get that url to work. By the way, our chocolate urinal cakes are probably our worst selling product. I'm sure sales will go up when we add Saban's face to them, though. We will be selling them slightly used to all Bama fans.

I think I read where the middle LB that will be starting for UT is a true freshman that was begging for a offer from AU last year and never got one. I think his last name is Nigel or has that in his last name.

It's a sign!

It's the Touchdown Saban! He's leaving for Notre Dame.

Tell every Cousin Humper you know. It will ruin their day -- their favorite work day since it is Hump Day.

I just read where Boise State will likely go undefeated. The remaining teams on their schedule aren't ranked in the top 75. It should mean an interesting controversy at the end of the season after the mormons got snubbed last season.

The freshman LB in question is Nigel Mitchell-Thornton, who also happens to be the 42nd Earl of Earnhardt, which elevated him to the starting position over more experienced players.

Actually, he's a true freshman, who enrolled in January. He's from Stone Mountain, Ga., and played at Stephenson High School.

Blogger coosa said...

Chizik said he wasn't buying stock in this team, which got me to thinking about how this team is doing as a stock. Stock traders use 2 basic methods for evaluating stocks - Fundamental Analysis and Technical Analysis. In FA, you look at everything about what the company is doing, financial condition, and chances of making money in the future. In TA, you only look at the movements in price. Its based on the idea that stock prices are controlled by people, and people behave in a predictable manner. Some consider it voodoo, but it actually works very well until it doesn't work.

Everything posted on the HABOTN is FA; I think its time to apply a little TA.

So we scored 37 in game 1, a nice starting point. Then game 2 we move up to 49. This is obviously a great trend, you want to buy stocks that are going up. Game 3, we drop back to 41. This is nothing to be alarmed about - no stock goes straight up. But what you want to see when it pulls back is a higher low. 41 is above 37, so the pullback was actually quite healthy.

Then in game 4, we jumped to 54. This is a great move because now we have made a higher high. The trend is definitely up, and things looks great at the moment. But for those waiting to buy, here's what to look for - a pullback will be no problem, but we need to score above 41 so that we make another higher low. Scoring below 41 would be bad; scoring below 37 would make us a definite sell. If we score above 54, then that indicates we are about to go parabolic and you need to drink all the koolaid you can get down.

All FA is irrelevant.
