THURSDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,197

Hey everyone. I saw a Lamborghini Gallardo convertible during my morning commute. It was registered in Montgomery. I am beyond shocked because, you know, I expected to go my entire life without seeing a Lamborghini Gallardo convertible with a "3" tag.

You Facebook people can peep my latest domicillian calamity. My favorite tree went down in the wind event we had in Montgomery the other day. Damn pear trees. No staying power.

(Putting that one on the tee.)

You want Auburn information. I know. Here we go.

THINGS GLEANED FROM SPRING PRACTICE
  • Gene Chizik represents a major shift in attitude: This is not Tommy Tuberville Jr. Chizik, who spent three seasons working under Tuberville, reminds nobody of the Tigers' former head coach. Practices were closed. Player access was somewhat restricted. Injury information was limited. OK, all information was limited. People seemed to enjoy Tuberville for his provincial ways. They won't be saying that about Chizik. I'm not saying he won't be successful. I'm saying he won't be a crowd charmer. Do you care? Probably not as long as the team wins.

  • I know why Gus Malzahn has been successful: He works smarter. The guy is a bookworm who constantly is examining defenses and other offenses for ideas he can implement into his own paradigm. Offensive coordinators typically are happy, chatty, carefree guys (ie Al Borges, Tony Franklin, Noel Mazzone) who approach the game like art. It's organic. Malzahn has a more calculating nature, which I typically associate with defensive coordinators. I expect Auburn's offense to be surprisingly intuitive next season.

  • The new coaches are very hands-on: You have the theatrics of Trooper Taylor, the raw vitriol of Jay Boulware, the abrupt stylings of Curtis Luper and the minute-by-minute oversight of Ted Roof when he's with the linebackers. The days of sideline coaching are over. This group has more energy than their predecessors. It's a more intense experience for the players without a doubt. Will that affect major changes? We'll see.

JGT,

I hear you on CGC but to hear his former players talk, he has to be somewhat of charmer. He seems to do well with recruits and parents. Is it that he just doesn't see the value in trying to please everyone as maybe Tubbs did???

Blogger Prowler said...

Anyone know the cummulative number of starts that our offensive line has?

9:38 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

CGC doesn't have to charm me. He just needs to have his priorties set, which are:
1. Beat Bama
2. Stay off probation (unless it interferes with top priority)
3. Graduate players
4. Win some other games.

JGT,

I would also like to get your opinion on CGM. He is only 3 years removed from the HS Coaching ranks. Does he have aspirations of taking over a major head coaching job or is happy being a well paid and strong OC Cordinator. If he is looking to move on up how long does he need before he takes on a new role.

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Chizik just needs a little more charisma...or really any charisma.

9:48 AM
Blogger tigercowboy said...

What's odd about the perception of CGC not being very charismatic is that he worked for 2 people that are, Mack Brown and Tubbs. You would think that he would of picked up on some of that while being around them.

9:49 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

WERK - you are right. And I don't understand it, either. But that's just the way I'm wired. And I do hate me some bama.

Well said, RK.

Charisma would be nice. Tubs was a good BSer, and that was frustrating at time, but at least you could get behind it.

Chizik hasn't said/done anything to mobilize the base. However, he's only been on the job a handful of weeks.

I suppose I am just whining about nothing. Will shut up now.

I don't recall us ever having a bad season when we beat Alabama.

However, I do recall 91, 92, 98, 99 & last year being the worst seasons we've had during my time following Auburn football and they all ended with losses to Alabama.

Usually when we win the Iron Bowl it has been to cap off a pretty good year.

Going into the 2003 season nobody knew how much losing Bobby Petrino was going to mean to that team, nor did they know how badly Nallsminger using Petrino's offense would be different than Petrino using Petrino's offense.

Funny how they never expected teams to pick up on if the TE or FB moves to the left, the run is going to the left strategy, nor did they ever expect the DL to stunt instead of running straight at the OL.

I don't quite understand the "more important to beat bama" vs "more important to win the SEC" argument. Who really cares what the coach's priority is? I imagine it is something more simple like "What can I do to win the game this week?" All this other junk is just stuff for fans to argue about.

I just don't understand how Chizik or anyone else would change their methods depending on whether the winning the SEC or National Championship priority is above or below the beating bama priority. This is nonsense talk.

I don't think we've ever won a championship without beating UAT. So it is implied.

The goal for any team should be to win championships. Beating UAT shouldn't be our end. It is merely a means to the end.

i dvrd the 2003 AU v PSU capital one bowl. it was on espn classic "before they were pros" yesterday.

that was the end of chizik's first year and he had the D playing at pretty high level and was pretty firey on the sidelines. it was nuts to see all the NFL players on that AU team: torbor, ratliff, johnson, rogers, rosegreen, dansby, & thomas. that doesn't include t-rob, mark brown, t. williams, t. jackson, and other solid players.

i didn't remember how crappy we actually played offensively in that game. 0 points deep into the 3rd. everyone remembers brown scorching PSU, but he earned most all of it himself. the OL got owned a lot of that game. i don't see how we got so excited about 2003 in retrospect watching that O and campbell sputter around. greg knox's poor WR coaching was front and center in that game.

watching tubs, chizik, and petrino together on the sidelines was like a twilight zone episode. and tubs looked like a different person. it is obvious how the years in the coaching grind had worn on him. he needed to get out.

11:11 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Chip saying that that D agaisnt PSU was playing at a pretty high level is an understatement. I seem to remember either Dansby or Torbor saying something to the effect that larry Johnson wouldn't be good enough to play RB at Auburn. He was only fast enough to be a LB. That D was just nasty!

11:18 AM
Blogger chip chip said...

chiz didn't look like a stiff against PSU. i don't think he talks to his mama with that mouth. he was going apenuts a lot of the time. maybe to chiz football = 5 long island iced teas.

11:18 AM
Blogger chip chip said...

i just said "pretty high level" because it only got better the next two years he was there.

AU does not win that game if not for the D. it reminded me of the USF game where the O kept digging the D a hole and they kept climbing out anyway.

11:21 AM
Blogger Prowler said...

With exception to his head coaching record, how many of you think that Chizik and Muschamp are pretty much the same guy?

11:24 AM
Blogger Prowler said...

11:26 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

I got ya Chip. I was just stressing how bad azz a D has to be to tell a player of Larry Johnson's caliber something like that. Man I hope we can get that mentality back on D. We are usually pretty good but i was us to be nasty! Remember Carlos Rodgers coming out before the Tenn game and making some comments about they were gonna shutdown the UT offense. Everyone that he was crazy for saying that before the game. They thought he was a prophet by halftime.

11:28 AM

Yes, Chizik was there in 2002 when Arkansas ran all over us. Fred Talley could have been driving a semi truck through the holes their line was opening in our D.

The big problem there was it was a close game right before half then Talley went 80 yards, then Duval had a punt blocked and suddenly we went from down 3 to down 13 in about two minutes.

As far as the Penn State game goes, I remember Larry Johnson being a baby after the game saying it was their coaches fault they didn't win because they didn't use him enough.

The other problem with the 2002 Arkansas game was we focused so much on stopping Matt Jones the week prior to the game, that we didn't know what to do when he didn't even try to run the ball most of the time.

He had burned us for 100 yards the year before in his first ever start, so we weren't going to let that happen again...late in the game he did bust a long run, but that was long after the game was already decided.

You all following the rumors on the Redskins trying to move up and take Mark Sanchez (and possibly ship JCampbell elsewhere)?

I'd love for Jason to get out of that place...that team is going nowhere.

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The Redskins are a horribly run org.

Daniel Snyder doesn't have a clue how to build a football team other than he just tries to throw money on everything and fix it.

That being said, Jason's 180 yards per game doesn't cut it in the NFL. He doesn't make a lot of mistakes, but he doesn't take a lot of risks either.

I think I can round up about 20 minutes of work, then I've got a few calls to make. Y'all have a most pleasant afternoon.

I am Sensi...Where there is smoke there is fire. This is the second time this offseason that a Jason Campbell replacement has been mentioned. Sounds like JCam's days in DC are limited. Sad to see.

Let's speculate on "better" places for JC's "skill set" in the NFL.

I'd take him on the Titans.

12:06 PM

Sensi, Jason would fit in well the Titans, wouldn't you think?

For Jason to be successful in the NFL he needs a team with a great RB. Someone who takes the focus of the QB and in a situation where you just need to manage the game to be a successful QB.

12:08 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

whoops, didn't scroll far enough to see that you already said that. But I agree with you.

12:08 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Plenty of teams in the NFL make their money on 180 yard games from the QB w/ good defense and strong running game. Jason could start for any of them and win 10-13 games.

12:09 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The Vikings would be a good fit for Jason.

12:09 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

RK, that's why, as a Titans fan, I would want him on the team. Get one good WR and he's set. That defense is nasty.

Where the heck is Brandon Cox these days?

RK, Vikings are another great choice.

The Skins have gone down hill since Gibbs left.
They are not going to get any better with this bunch running them now.
I would like to see Jason go elswhere.

12:11 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Campbell would be a lot like Kerry Collins was with the Titans this year, but a bit more athletic. So he'd be a good fit there.

12:11 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Sensi, Titans need to pony up and go get Boldin.

12:11 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Brandon Cox is somewhere laughing at me for my comments of "I'm glad he graduated, maybe we'll get some solid production out of the QB spot instead of a game manager."

12:13 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Seanzie,

You, me and Cowherd have been saying that all morning. No need for the 1st and 3rd round picks on the Titans. Go get Boldin and get JC for a 2nd.

Did you see where SI.com's Andy Staples quoted your blog, your quote was from talking about Sen'Derricks NFL potential, saying its a Football playing league and not a combine league. Nice props,

12:22 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Jason is never going to be a big time playmaker, but he can be a solid NFL QB with the right supporting staff and a good running game.

He'll never be a guy who can carry a team though.

12:23 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

as we all saw in 2004, jason was much better when he has the working parts around him. again, watching the PSU game, he was flicking rockets 20 yards downfield to WRs who were not looking for the ball.

Jay new idea for your next submission, how about wheres waldo segment, players that are MIA after spring. Here is my list.

1. Gabe McKenzie - TE/DE- No is saying why the kid has been in street clothes for 3 weeks. I asked his uncle at the gym, no dice. We need him badly for the upcoming year. All they say is undisclosed illness. I am not a doctor but I cant figure this one out.

2. Spencer Pybus - LB - This kid shot onto the scene last year as a Rudy type freshman. Now that the Bull is on the team I have not heard a peep. I know we need depth at LB this year. The kid had less stats at the A-day game than the walk on linbackers.

3. Ryan Shoemaker/Chris Todd P/QB- I know you discussed these two today. I think they are part of the I am just glad I can sit on this scholarship type list.

4. Name a DL/DE - I have not heard a peep out of any of the DL/DE's we signed over the past year or two. I can assume Raven Gray has moved into the hall of fame of ghost recruits. What about the others, Lykes, etc. I have not heard much out of any of them. With our depth we dont need projects we need starters and impact players.

I'm going back to a more reasonable avatar.
