Auburn update, 8/22
Hey everyone. In Wednesday's editions of the Advertiser, I wrote a story about S Aairon Savage. At one point in the story, I quoted CB Jonathan Wilhite saying that Savage laid a particularly nasty hit on Tre Smith in the A-Day game.
I didn't see the A-Day game due to a prior commitment, so I decided to ask Tre about the tackle. I really like Tre. He's funny and self-effacing and glad to be Tre Smith. If that makes sense.
Anyway, here's what Tre said about Savage's "big A-Day hit."
Me: I heard that hit Savage laid on you was rough.
TRE: Rough? Try late.
Me: So what happened?
TRE:(Laughs) Here's what happened. I was running a crossing route and the ball was way overthrown. Mix couldn't catch this pass. I stretched for it. Everybody in the stadium knew I didn't have a chance to catch that ball. So I land after the jump, I take two more steps and boom. I'm down. I look up and it's Savage standing there. I think he was shocked about how hard that hit was. We're talking helmet-to-helmet, vicious stuff. He said he was sorry. That's all I remember him saying. I mean, they threw a flag there. In a spring game, no less. You know it's bad.
Me: Yea, but can Savage hit?
TRE: It's pretty clear he can hit. It might be nice for him to do it when there's a live play going on.
**EDIT: When Tre made the reference to Mix, he was just saying that because Mix was a tall receiver.
